Army.lk takes advice from Puligal Today

By Charu Sheelan

In our previous article titled "Defence.lk is 41% more lethal than Army.lk" we had mentioned the Defence.lk website's repetitive use of the word "sniped" in virtually every single article they publish, and also pointed out the conspicuous absence of any sniper attacks being reported on Army.lk. Basically we have a situation where the writers for defence.lk "fill" their articles with made up sniper attacks against LTTE fighters, sometimes "sniping" as many as 30 enemy combatants in a single article.

Unfortunately the writers for the other official government military website, army.lk, are never consulted about the story writing, so there are daily discrepencies between the "officially" announced LTTE casualties by the army.lk website and the defence.lk website. The most obvious difference, other than the numbers of LTTE fighters killed, is the lack of any sniper reportings at all on army.lk, compared to the daily massive sniper reports on defence.lk. Think for a minute, if the Sri Lankan army had actually sniped 30 LTTE fighters, you would expect the army.lk website to know about it and report it, but instead you will find a completely different daily report with no mention of the made up sniper attacks, and a far lower total for LTTE fighters killed.

As mentioned in the previous article, the total reported LTTE fighters killed by the army over the last two months is 41% higher on defence.lk (1174) as compared to army.lk (just 835). The number of LTTE fighters killed by snipers during the same period is over 200 according to defence.lk, compared to ZERO reported by army.lk. Based on this information we stated the following in our previous article:

In every single Army.lk report the LTTE suffers "heavy casualties" due to close quarters combat. But in every single Defence.lk report, the report always concludes with at least 5 or 10 LTTE fighters being "sniped" from long range. On one day the writer became a little too excited and he sniped 30 fighters at one go. What this shows is its simply two seperate people making up stories, and their story patterns remain repetitive because its the same person writing every day. They don't have the intelligence to make up new stories each day, or even to match their stories with their other website writers.

We are happy to report that Army.lk has taken heed of our report, and today for the first time in nearly a year they have brought back snipers to their daily report:

"Army snipers played a key role in those offensives taking minute targets." (from http://army.lk/morenews.php?id=20933)

A little research shows that the last time Army.lk has spoken about a sniper was in April 8, 2008 when they reported:

"Army snipers meanwhile sniped and killed three terrorists on two occasions in THIRUKETHISWARAN and PERANKUMAM. There was one female Tiger terrorist among the dead."

Besides this sniper incident reported in April 2008, there were only 3 other sniper incidents mentioned over the last five years by Army.lk which were reported on 28th January 2008, 24th January 2008, and 27th February 2008. Thus in the history of the Army.lk website there have been only 4 mentions of sniper attacks by the Sri Lankan security forces ever. But after we reported this on Puligal Today, showing the discrepancy with defence.lk's daily massive "sniper attacks", the very next day Army.lk decided to add snipers to their report for the first time in a year, and only the 5th time ever. Lets look at their newly injected sniper statement again:

"Army snipers played a key role in those offensives taking minute targets."

Just as a TV serial slowly introduces a new character into the script, Army.lk has introduced their latest character "Mr. Sniper", so that they can fall in line with defence.lk's made up casualty reports. But what is so humorous is the fact that they got this idea, not from their own officers or propaganda officials, but by reading a Tamil website called Puligal Today. Thus the level of mental insecurity of the defence propaganda team becomes self evident. Their minds are so weak, that in a single article I was able to inject the concept of adding snipers to their reports. Just see how easily they are influenced by psychological warfare. And these are the people who are supposed to be in charge of government propaganda. Their job is to convince other people, but their minds are so easy to influence that they themselves are revealing their own insecurities by their reactive actions.

This has been the repetitive history of this defence team, constantly revealing their own weaknesses and insecurities. Their own reactions indicate weakness and admit their mistake. For example, I said their picture was photoshopped, and immediately they removed the photo and then later put a caption "This photo has been altered for security reasons". I said they were showing pictures of dead sinhala soldiers and claiming they were LTTE, immediately the picture disappears from their website. I said Army.lk has never reported any of the "sniper attacks" claimed on defence.lk, the very next day they start speaking about snipers. Can you see the pattern, which completely betrays their own insecurity? They are being played and manipulated like fools, and they respond just as expected, further exposing their own insecurities and faults.

In conclusion we would like to thank the staff of Army.lk and Defence.lk for once again taking the advice provided at Puligal Today and trying to improve their poor record of misinformation. We cannot change them over night, but little by little we will clean the modaya out of their head.

Todays joke from defence modayas:

"Troops of the 5th Vijayaba Regiment killed 12 Tigers and destroyed a bus and motor cycle in which they were traveling in Pudukudirippu West yesterday, top military sources in the battle front told Asia Tribune."

They want you to believe the LTTE is travelling by bus into the SLA defence line, when there is only 1 kilometer of space. "Everyone get in the bus, we are driving to that tree over there."

COLOMBO, April 1 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's rupee hit a life low of 116.00/10 versus the dollar on Wednesday on import demand for the U.S. currency, dealers said.

"The rupee hit 116.00/10 as a foreign bank bought dollars from the market due to import demand," said a currency dealer, who asked not to be named. Other dealers confirmed the fall. (Reporting by Shihar Aneez, Editing by Ian Geoghegan)

Lol.

Lets all put our hands together to welcome Mr Sniper to ArmyLK.

I am sure he will provide us with thousands of net-kills every day.

One thing this story highlights is the level of detachment between ArmyLK/DefenceLK writers and the battlefront.

Looks like real news is censored, even for them.

Hence, they have to scroll through Tamil websites and blogs to pick up points.

Even DW, who pretends to be a navy official is prone to our activities.

Note how he introduced moderation less than a few days after his VIT director surrender story was proven to be a fairytale.

Of course, he is slightly better than the ArmyLK banda. He neither removed that paragraph concerned or my comment revealing the truth. Instead he posted another net-injured story in one of his quickest updates ever, before effectively blocking us.

LTTE's technical wing chief killed in confrontation - Mullaittivu

LTTE's technical wing chief S. Kirupakaran alias Madivalahan was confirmed killed following a confrontation with Sri Lankan security forces at the Mullaittivu battlefront recently, defence sources said citing intercepted LTTE communication.

According to available information, LTTE has offered the self-styled 'Lt.Colonel' status to the slain terrorist on Tuesday (March 31), who was said to be the mastermind and chief coordinator of the LTTE's satellite cum radio communication network.

Madivalahan was born in Jaffna and has reportedly spent most of his time at Trincomalee before joining the terrorist organization as a full time activist. "This is what to be expected in the coming days as more senior tigers will be exposed to direct military attacks" a defence observer said adding that the loss of Madivalahan also underscores the probable end game for the LTTE.

The death of Madivalahan has triggered tension and drawn heavy critics against the present LTTE leadership, amongst the hell bent LTTE diaspora circles in Toronto and London, the observer further stated.

Apart from the exaggerated translation, should DefenceLK readers really believe that Tigers would be revealing all the details given in that article from their restricted one square kilometre?

Also, பூர்வீகம் means background or origin and not necessarily place of birth. Lt. Col. Mathy was born and bred in Trinco, but his parents were from Jaffna.

What happened to that 12 hours dead-line. Now write about my Laptop and cameras. I only stole few cameras and few laptops. But all army officers stole in millions. khanthas said...

Come on Saman, no worries about DW. You are a Hero among Singhalese with reporting what they want to hear, and now with taking away Tamils’ belongings …

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

In fact most Sinhalese have been saying he deserves to take those cameras and laptops, and the soldiers should also be able to take what they find. They fail to understand that there were 400,000 innocent civilians living in those areas they are looting, and those possessions they take mostly belonged to innocent civilians.

Anytime they see a car or a bike or even a printer, the foolish Sinhalese say it belonged to LTTE terrorists, and was used in terror attacks. They are unable to see the 400,000 civilians, who even by their standards should be regarded as innocent people. All of the house destroyed are mostly civilian houses. All of the looted property is mostly civilian property. The Sinhalese have given a license to their army to drive out and loot anything the civilians left.

When the civilians are sent through screening before going to the IDP camps they have to forfeit their gold jewellery, money and anything else valuable. Even those who escape by boat have to give their boats and motors as a bribe to remain alive.

How many civilians have been killed so that a Sri Lankan army soldier could have their gold?

Peter said...

When we were on way to Vanni in 2003 we spent two days in Chillapam where we came across a Sinhala woman wearing a gold chain with a தாலி 'thaali' attached.

Other half was curious. She got into conversation with this woman and asked where she had bought the 'nice' jewelery. Apparently, she had got it as a 'gift' from a 'Tamil friend'.

Now, what kind of Tamil would give a தாலி as gift? I think we all know how she got hold of it.

Peter said...

One the funniest stories is actually from Jaffna. Sinhala soldiers took a lap-top and charger from a family in Silaalai. They tried to use it Jaffna without a UPS and ended up burning the charger. Believe it or not, they managed to get the family to order a new charger from abroad and have it delivered.

Peter said...

Perhaps not very funny for the family involved. Sad that we are reduced to laughing at our own predicament.

Peter said...

Ohh! Even the வாகனங்கள் haven't been spared by them?

I think the '95 Jaffna exodus netted them the biggest booty since '83. Back in '83 they took TVs, Radios, other electronic items and jewelery; a lot of household furniture were simpled burned.

Even now, in Trinco motor-bikes and computers are popular amongst the soldiers. Everyone in our family insist that they get desktops instead of laptops because of it. Mind you, even desktops have been taken.

A FUNNY STORY..

Congress President Mrs Sonia Gandhi has reiterated the Centre and the Congress party's have been impressing upon the Sri Lankan government to find negotiated settlement to the ethnic problem.

In a letter to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Mr M. Karunanidhi, Mrs gandhi said it has also been emphasized that a devolution package assuring equal rights to tamils must also been guaranteed.

Expressing deep anguish over the extreme suffering of thousands of innocent Tamils due to the on going conflict, Mrs Gandhi said centre and the Congress party strongly believe that it is necessary for the srilankan authorities to take necessary steps to safeguard and protect their interests.

Mrs. Gandhi said that the Congress party had been espousing the cause of tamils in Srilanka for over three decades, urging successive governments in the neighbouring country to ensure that tamils are guaranteed and enjoy equal rights within the framework of a united Sri Lanka.

CHENNAI: Calling for measures by Sri Lankan government to safeguard and protect Tamils in the island nation, Congress President Sonia Gandhi on
Wednesday said the "first step" needed was cessation of hostilities to enable "innocent people to move to safety zones".

"We believe strongly that it is necessary for the Sri Lankan authorities to take whatever steps are needed to safeguard and protect them and their interests," she said.

"The first step would, obviously, be cessation of hostilities," she said in a letter to Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi.

The Congress chief said her party and the UPA government was committed for a negotiated settlement with a devolution package to ensure "equality and equal rights for Sri Lankan Tamils within the framework of a united Sri Lanka".

In her letter, a copy of which was circulated to media here, she said the ongoing conflict and extreme suffering of thousands of innocent Tamil citizens of Sri Lanka, especially women and children, caused deep anguish to everyone.

Recalling Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's recent letter to Karunanidhi, she said the government has been constantly in touch with authorities in Colombo on a number of proposals, in particular on the cessation of hostilities, so as to enable all innocent people to move to safety zones.

I know its useless “I am not B”, any way I try again. Vanni Tamils suffer today as no people ever endured: burning bombs falling on their heads, no food, no water, deceases and floods. Any human being in this situation will try safer places, and this is what exactly the Vanni Tamils are not looking for. Are Tigers holding them forcefully? Illogical, as they are busy fighting SLA surrounding them and at the same time they cannot put order to 300000 odd people. One cannot force to stay those people who live in these dire conditions since long and have nothing more to loose. The simple point is that they fear the government camps (we heard stories what happened to Tamil women who dared to go there) more than the bombs falling on their head.

Two questions however: Why don’t the GOSL allows some independent reporters to the area? Second one: Admitting as you say, that they are used as human shields, Do any democratically elected government have the right to bomb its own people it wants to liberate ?. Only evil-people will do such horrors.. And the GOSL is evil. To Tamils.

If one does not get the logic of that, one is beyond redemption.

They don't know what "victory" is because they can't define "complete elimination of Tigers". Is it the death of VP or even the deaths of the top 50? Is it the death of every single person who ever took the LTTE oath?

Or is it the end of the aspiration, that of a self-governing Tamileelam? If so, how can capturing land end aspirations?

Peter, they think that proven tactics of white vanning, extra judicial killings, welfare camps aka concentration camps whose life span goes from 3 years to 15 years, and Tamil traitors can put the final nail on Tamil cause. Few weeks back GR said that i will make the Tamil separatism will never make it to surface again for next 10 generations which is almost 300 years.

They simply forgot the fact that Wanni cold-blooded killings united every Tamilian around the globe as earlier it was only 30% of TN Tamils supported LTTE, and 80% of diaspora, now it seems 80% of TamilNadu folks, and 95% of diaspora behind LTTE. Some of the Jaffna and East Tamil folks are affected by Stockholm syndrome which is caused by continuous SLA/Paramilitary torture, otherwise their thoughts will be supporting the Tamil cause. Leaving Jaffna in hands of SLA limited our resources and voices for Tamil cause that hurt our sustainment of our Eelam cause for some time to come.

As I hear, many school girls're raped by paramilitary/SLA in Jaffna lately, and those crimes hardly come out to public since those girls' future will jeopardy if it comes out.

Thats why Aananda Sangary fought with DD over his gang's atrocities in Jaffna. From what I heard from one close source, a dozen EPDP members gang raped a Tamil girl from "Nedunthivu" sometime back.

Bhairav,

As you said, JVP treatment for Tamils won't work for the same reason it didn't work in '80s and '70s. There are plenty of people in Tamil Nadu who out of conviction (as the NDTV poll showed) and for money will harbor Tamil militant and pave the way for "terrorist" attacks in the south.

Secondly, there now exists the Diaspora factor which simply wouldn't die out for as long as we have to call home to hear of robbery, rape or murder by Sinhala troops.
----

On the issue of Jaffna, I don't think the people have changed. Trinco, for example, has always been under SLA control. Yet, my family, including extended one, is as committed to the struggle as any family of Batticaloa, Jaffna or Vanni origin. Being under SLA control actually enhances our commitment than eroding it.

Bhairav,

For most hand-to-mouth Bandas, $2,000 is a lot of money, regardless of where they live.

For example, they started a fund raiser in the UK last April. A guy at the HC had to give 7k of moda Lanka's gov money to round up a year of donations to 100k GBP. That was the total they could manage in UK, which, according to Wikipedia, is home to 100k+ bandas. There are many Tamils in the UK that give 100k+ GBP in single donations.

We can't assess Bandas on par with ourselves or any other community in the world. They are a unique species.

I think he is in US 'cause he is active from 7.30pm to 5am Colombo time.

Peter said...

Rebellions,

Don't worry. Bandas are reactive to single posts, but they lack the capacity to learn.

When a photo is noted as 'fake', for example, they remove it; but, that doesn't stop them from publishing another 'fake' photo on the following day or week.

["For most hand-to-mouth Bandas, $2,000 is a lot of money, regardless of where they live."]

Just to give an idea of what "big money" is considered in Sri Lanka, there was an article on defence.lk a month ago, where a Canadian donated $1,000 canadian dollars (around $750 US dollars), and he got to go meet the defence minister personally and have photos taken with him like a king, which were then published in all newspapers and government websites in Sri Lanka. In fact here is the article, because its so funny:

http://defence.lk/new.asp?fname=20090312_08

Do you think for $750 you could meet with any other world leader and have newspaper articles written about you? For Sri Lanka this $750 was the biggest donation ever, and they wanted to publicize it, but there are thousands of Tamils who give more than that each month to the LTTE, and they don't get or want any recognition for it.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

SRI LANKA IS SO POOR NOW IT CANT AFFORD TO BUY X-RAY SCANNERS FOR CUSTOM CHECKING

The Sri Lanka Customs is unhappy with a presidential directive that for security purposes the Navy too would examine all sea cargo entering the country. The presidential directive was issued solely for security purposes, Director General of Customs (DCG) Sarath Jayatillkeke said yesterday.

Customs sources are questioning whether this was a move to duplicate their duties or was solely for security reasons.

The majority of customs rank and file were unhappy with the move but were willing to train the Navy personnel on X-ray scanning of important container cargo. Unfortunately all scanners are out of order at the moment, Customs sources said.

They said the X-ray scanners were non functional for lack of funds for maintenance.

Of the four X-ray scanners available, one was given to Airport and Aviation Authority and the rest to the Port. Recently, when the non functioning of the scanners was brought to the notice of the local agents, they had requested for USD 1.5 million annually as maintenance fee and the Treasury had not responded since September last year.

The Army has told the President that all banned LTTE belongings found in Mullaitivu had been brought into the country through the ports with the connivance of some Customs officials, informed sources said.

Most of these items had been brought to Mullaitivu by the LTTE through sea routes, they said .

A couple of days ago they have added net-injured to the list, so things are getting more dangerous.

Peter said...

Banda's attempts here are getting lamer by the day.

Now we all have to watch, and believe, Rupahavini, television's take of the much trusted DefenceLK.

FYI

The people in Vanni are Tamils like us. Some of them our relatives, others our friends and some relatives of our friends. Most of us take that they are telling us the truth when they say they want to live in their own homes, without shelling and Sinhala soldiers.

If you really think that we would take any statement given by a Tamil in the detention centers as heartfelt, you are appealing to the wrong crowd. Try a nursery.

Some of us have spent days in military occupied areas. We know what we should and shouldn't say in those cases.

There is only one was of showing civilian plight in the 'death zone'; that's to allow access for independent observers or media. For as long as the moda authorities refuse, logical assumption is that they have something to hide.

I'm not Bhairav said...

khanta's I thought Daily telegraph reporter was independent. Sorry, now I realise he's a rupavahini guy too..

OK peelamists.. I give up. Just dont beleive what you see coming out of the escaped civilian's mouths.

Since 'independent' news reporters are not given un-restricted access to the war zone at all times I here by declare that the IDPs are staying on their own will. 100s of people interviewed by Rupavahini who say otherwise are actros!!!

Happy?

Rupavahini always tells the truth. Only DefenceLK does a better job with the truth.

And Tamils always speak their heart out in front on Sinhala soldiers or in one of the detention centers.

I remember telling the truth when I left Vanni. At Omanthai I told the Sinhala soldiers all the stuff I write online.

I really did. And they said: "How sweet, we'll broadcast your views of Rupavahini for bandas."

Bandas never kill people for disagreeing with them. Tamils can easily say whatever they want.

Look at the luxury lives of Tarki, Lasantha (Sinhala?) and Vithyatharan.

1. This civilian was being held in a SLA detention camp surrounded by armed soldiers. The minute the camera would go away, who ever spoke would get punished. Under severe hardships people will be willing to say things to get extra food, safety, etc. I can't blame them if they lied, because the torture the Sri Lankan soldiers put them through has forced them to do whatever they can to survive.

2. This australian reporter (who did a pretty good job considering he had no access to Vanni), was followed by Sri Lankan soldiers at all times, and he was told by other aid workers not ask questions to the IDPs because the soldiers would punish them afterwards. Under such circumstances, everyone here chooses to take the words of their own relatives and friends.

If you allowed independent foreign journalists (aka "Terrorists" in your language), then we would be willing to listen to other opinions. As long as you keep the Tamil IDPs under armed guard and don't allow even their own relatives to speak to them, why should we believe anything you say?

CASIR launched an assault on SLA front-line positions on Sunday night.

SLA positions along an 8km stretch were taken out by the teams.

Now the details:

Small teams of CASIR Unit fighters led by Col. Bhanu infiltrated behind SLA lines in the PTK area, boxing the 53rd division in the areas between PTK Sivan temple, Irainapallai Junction, Irainapallai Town and Ananthapuram.

SLA's 53rd Division is now effectively out of action. The 57th Division, which was meant to be rearguard, is not at the front lines.

The situation as on Wednesday was the 55th continues to attempt to breakout of Challai, 58th is attempting to link-up with 55th, and 57th is taking up new positions with the help of TF8. The 59th is stagnant.

Only 55th and 57th are full divisions. 58th is back to its task-force size following the Mar. 2nd strike by Col. Lawrence's team. 59th has not been in offensive operations since Col. Vithusha's team decapitated that division south of PTK in the Feb. 2nd strike.
