Families of dead Sri Lanka soldiers speak; government has abandoned them

The Sri Lankan government’s “final offensive” against the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the island’s north has killed and injured thousands of Tamil civilians as well as displacing hundreds of thousands others.

While the defence ministry reports that soldiers are facing “stiff resistance,” it refuses to allow any journalists into the area and last October stopped reporting soldier casualties. The government claims that the death toll is a security issue, but the real reason is its fear that the escalating casualties would add to the popular anger and discontent over the war.

Over the past month, the bodies of hundreds of dead soldiers have been returned to their families in remote villages in the south. Many more wounded soldiers are being treated in government hospitals in Colombo and other areas. This terrible toll is the other side of the Sri Lankan government’s criminal war.

Most soldiers are economic conscripts, forced through poverty to become cannon-fodder in the communal war. Far from enlisting to support the communal aims of the government’s war, they join the army to provide money for their families. While President Mahinda Rajapakse constantly speaks of the “heroes” of his war, the real stories of their lives and deaths are never told.

World Socialist Web Site (WSWS) reporters recently spoke with the parents and families of several soldiers who were killed during last month’s battles in the northeast of the island.

***

Warnakulasuriya Amith Madhusanka, a 19-year-old solider from Haththiniya, about 57 kilometres from Colombo, was killed on April 29 in northern Puthukkudiyiruppu. According to information given to his parents, he was one of nine soldiers from the Gajaba regiment who lost their lives that day.

Like thousands of Sri Lankan soldiers, Amith was forced into the military by poverty. He left school after reaching Grade 10, took up masonry and carpentry work in order to support his parents, and then joined the army in January 2008.

Amith Madhusanka's parents

Amith’s parents, Ajith Joseph and Krishanthi Manike, were distraught over their son’s death.

Ajith Joseph, 39, has picked coconuts for nearly 20 years. Amith’s only sister is married. All are very poor and live in a small dwelling built from wooden planks and a roof thatched with coconut leaves.

Ajith Joseph explained: “The main reason my son joined the army was in order to raise money to build a house for our family. We don’t have land or a house. We used to live in small houses erected on other peoples’ lands and we drifted from one place to another.

“My son was very worried about our condition. He wanted to buy some land for us but he couldn’t do it. For the last two years we’ve been living in the home of his mother’s parents. This small piece of land was given to her father because he was working at the adjoining coconut estate.”

Government parliamentarian Dayassritha Thisera and several local politicians attended Amith’s funeral and told Ajith Joseph that he could build a house on a nearby small piece of land. Ajith Joseph began building a wooden-plank home on that land, using some of the money received by the family from the army for his son’s funeral.

Last week, however, local government authorities told Ajith Joseph that he could not build the house because the land was on a government reservation. “I spent 15,000 rupees [$US127, or more than two months pay] trying to build that house and I’ve now lost everything,” Ajith Joseph angrily said.

Ajith Joseph told us that many people had attended Amith’s funeral, with several parliamentarians appearing at the front of the procession. “All they want soldiers for is war,” he said. When asked about the government, he simply said: “We can’t live in the present unbearable conditions.”

Nirosha Perera from the Colombo suburb of Pannipitiya was told by local police on April 9 that her younger brother, Buddhika Sanjeewa, had been killed. One day earlier she received a telephone call from the Puthukkudiyiruppu army camp where Buddhika was stationed, asking why she had been named as his guardian, even though their parents were still alive.

“He named me as his guardian,” Nirosha told the WSWS, “in order to make me his beneficiary because I am the poorest in the family.” Her father’s sister and brother both had their sons killed in the army. “Now my father has lost his 22-year-old son,” she said.

Buddhika’s 56-year-old father works at the National Hospital in Colombo. He suffers from a heart ailment but has to keep working to support the family. His eldest son, a bachelor, drives a trishaw. Nirosha’s husband is a manual laborer, but without a regular income. They all live in a partially-constructed house.

Buddhika trained as a welder at the government’s Vocational Training Institute. He attempted to establish a welding workshop at home but lacked capital. Concerned about the economic problems facing the family and not wanting to be a burden, Buddhika decided to join the army.

“Mother and I tore up his school leaving certificate to stop him enlisting but he secretly obtained a second copy and joined the army,” Nirosha said.

Buddhika was given four months’ training and sent to the battlefront. Two months later his remains were sent back home. Family relatives told us that the army officers who escorted the body were unable to come to his funeral because they were too busy attending several similar funerals.

Holding back her tears, Buddhika’s grief-stricken mother said: “These people send youth who can just hold a gun to the front. I must say this openly—the government is responsible. To me he is my beloved kid but for them he’s just a soldier. They first said that the war would finish in a month and I thought that my kid would be home in a month, but no. Then they said it would finish in 48 hours but still my son didn’t come. Now you see how he came.”

Naleen Maduranga was killed on the Puthukkudiyiruppu battle front. His home is in Avissawella, about 50 km southeast of Colombo, where he lived with his uncle, M.K. Sunil, a 53-year-old carpenter.

Maduranga, who was raised by his uncle, was killed March 29. On the same day, his sealed coffin was escorted home by several army officers. The government provided 30,000 rupees (about $US260) for funeral expenses.

Sunil's family

Three families—Sunil’s own, his son’s and his daughter’s—live in the house, which is located on a small piece of land. Sunil suffers from a heart disease but he has to keep working to provide income for his extended family.

In tears, Maduranga’s aunt told us: “The army did not even know when my nephew died and we don’t even know that Maduranga’s body was there in the coffin. An army officer waited on duty till the burial was over and we were advised not to open the coffin. We all somehow expect that Maduranga may come home again.”

Maduranga was born in 1987 in Avissawella and educated at Mahiyangana Central College about 220 kilometres from Colombo. Forced to abandon his education prematurely, 11-year-old Maduranga began working as a helper in a local shop. Maduranga’s younger brother became a monk, having been offered to a temple.

Such was the poverty that when Maduranga was about 13 his parents asked Maduranga’s uncle Sunil to look after the teenager. He moved into Sunil’s home and began learning carpentry. Maduranga’s cousins told us that the boy suffered because he hadn’t been able to grow up in the warmth of his own family and out of deep despair tried to commit suicide on one occasion.

Maduranga joined the army in November 2007. He hoped that if he survived the war he could support his parents’ and uncle’s families, and if he were killed then both families would get compensation.

Maduranga quickly became fed up, deserted the army while on leave and began working as a bus conductor. Facing arrest by local police for desertion, he decided to go back to the army. Within months of rejoining, Maduranga’s dead body was returned to the home.

Sunil’s daughter, Thilini, told the WSWS that she was also married to a soldier and now had fears about his life. “I know how terrible the nightmare is for those families who have members engaged in this war.”

Sinhala Patriots,

What happened to the 48 hours dead-line of Kotaibaya? Defence-liar also gave 48 hours dead-line. Defence-liar said on 12th May as follows..

'DefenceWire has received credible information that either today or tomorrow, both the 58 and 59 Divisions will cross into the NFZ. An area, roughly 2 miles long and 2 miles wide, roughly half the size of the NFZ has been declared a CSZ.'

Today is 12th. Tomorrow is 13th. 14th May is day-after tomorrow. Yesterday hundreds of Modayas attained Nibbana. Ambulances were running in Colombo and Anurathapaura continuously.

By 11 A.M., most of the results would have come due to electronic voting machines. Counting is just totalling up the data from each machine.

All the voting machines from thousands of polling booths of 543 constituencies are transported to few hundred counting centres.

Usually they keep 2 days time for logistic and other purposes.

As far as the UN and the USA, both have failed the Tamil people. Their final call, after 10,000 Tamil civilians have been killed and 20,000 injured, is that the Sri Lankan army should use small caliber weapons such as mortars and machine guns in the assault. I hope all of you remember this. The international community is not the solution. You have wasted 6 months trying to convince them, and their answer is to kill the civilians with small caliber weapons.

The only solution is amongst the Tamils. That may extend to Tamil Nadu, or it may depend only on Eelam Tamils. But certainly the solution is only amongst Tamils.

IC has been asked to take official responsibility for civilians. What happens from here in the so called "safe zone" is beyond the control of the LTTE. Most cadres have been withdrawn from the vicinity. Small numbers remain to facilitate last minute escape for additional families who wish not to surrender to the army.

SLA has recovered some fireworks in Colombo. Sadly, some weapons are not visible to the human eye.

Further, serious, developments coming soon. Watch this space for a few more days.

Most charities only use 10% of their donations for actual charitable work, with 90% going into their pockets as administrative expense. In this case we can expect nothing to reach the IDPs, as the Sri Lankan government is there at the end to eat that last 10%.

Malin said...

Bhairav dont loose hope JJ will help you OUT.. you might have go LICK her white haired Pus....

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

It is clear from all that has been said and done that the IC wants the LTTE out of the way and destroyed. So much so that even after 30,000 civilian casualties, they are still standing by and asking the LTTE to surrender and for the civilians to enter Sri Lankan concentration camps. The UN security council, after 6 months, comes out and blames the LTTE for everything, and just softly asks the Sri Lankan government to use smaller weapons in the last phase of the war.

These same IC vultures tricked the LTTE to enter peace negotiations in 2002 when the Sri Lankan army was on the verge of total collapse. Then the vultures trained and supplied weapons to the Sri Lankan government, under the guise of ceasefire agreement. Once the Sri Lankan army was strong and LTTE weakened, these same vultures who tricked LTTE into peace negotiations no longer want to talk with the LTTE, instead saying they are weak and should now surrender and lay down their weapons.

The moral is that the IC only respects violence and force. When the LTTE was strong they wanted to negotiate with them. Now that LTTE is weak, they dont even want to talk to them.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

And to add to that, it appears the IC plan is to remove LTTE then go for war crimes trial against Sri Lankan government leaders. These trials are really a joke, because maybe one or two people will be punished for the deaths of 20 or 30 thousand people. And the punishment is always somewhat minor, maximum life in a deluxe European prison. Of course, when it was the Germans and Japanese, they executed all of them, because those crimes were against white people. But when it is against Africans and Asians, then no one really cares, and the punishment will be a slap on the wrist. Some times that is better, because it allows the people to carry out judgment.

But we both know that won't happen. So what the IC has taught the LTTE is that only violence is respected in the world. The result is the LTTE will have to become more violent in order to be treated as an equal with the Sri Lankan government.

You mean the 30 metric tons meant to feed 300,000 people? The Sri Lankan government sent enough food to feed 1% of the population for a day, and then tries to blame the LTTE for having stolen the food.

Boys,

Trying to reason with bandas, or even the IC for that matter, is a futile exercise.

Age old maximum is that in this world the fittest survive, while the weak are confined to concentration camps.

Most unfortunate has been some Tamils' enchantment with the Western model of "human rights", "protection of minorities" and "free media". Past six months are testament to the selective use of all three.

At least now, we are expected to realize what needs to be done and support the cause through whatever challenges may come. In the coming days, there will be a lot of "outrage" at "blood baths". Words and "concerns" couldn't save our people; we mustn't allow them to slave our people either.

Now that the futility of appealing to the fabled moral high ground has been proven beyond doubt, allow the "terrorists" to win the Tamils' rights in whatever way they choose.

IMF loan for Sri Lanka not appropriate right now: Clinton
3 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) — US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said here Thursday it "is not an appropriate time" to consider a massive International Monetary Fund loan for Sri Lanka.

Clinton told reporters that the United States has been "trying to convince both sides," the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger guerrillas, to stop fighting.

"We have also raised questions about the IMF loan at this time. We think that it is not an appropriate time to consider that (loan) until there is a resolution of the conflict," Clinton added.

The United States is the main shareholder in the IMF and its approval is key to the release of the loan.

Clinton's comments came two weeks after the IMF said talks with Sri Lanka for a bailout package of around two billion dollars were continuing despite reports the fund was under pressure to withold the planned financing.

News reports said US officials indicated that they want the IMF loan to Sri Lanka, aimed at helping the low-income Asian country cope with the global financial crisis, delayed to prod Colombo to step up aid to civilians.

The central bank in Colombo said at the time that an IMF mission was in Sri Lanka to try to ensure there are enough controls to verify that the IMF funds for balance-of-payments support are not used for other purposes.

Sri Lankan central bank governor Nivard Cabraal said the IMF loan was on track and procedures such as safeguard assessments had to be finished regardless of whether the United States was dragging its feet over the loan.

Jeff Anderson, a US embassy spokesman in Colombo, rejected any notion that Washington was threatening to stop the IMF loan, which according to reports ranges from 1.9 billion dollars to 2.4 billion dollars.

But the French ambassador to the United Nations in New York, Jean-Maurice Ripert, was quoted in a media report as saying that the "Americans want to play with the question of the IMF loan."

Clinton and her British counterpart David Miliband, during a joint appearance here Tuesday, called on all Sri Lankans to stop fighting immediately and allow trapped civilians to escape the conflict.

It was the latest in a series of so far futile international calls aimed at ending the fighting between government forces and the separatist guerrillas, holed up on a coastal strip in the island's northeast.

They also expressed "alarm at the large number of reported civilian casualties over the past several days in the designated "safe zone" along the coastal strip.

The pair urged the warring sides to allow a UN humanitarian team to visit the conflict zone and help evacuate the civilians as well as allow food and medical aid to reach those trapped by the fighting.

In New York on Monday, Miliband and his counterparts Bernard Kouchner of France and Michael Spindelegger of Austria issued an appeal that called on the UN Security Council to address the "appalling" crisis in Sri Lanka.

It was announced at UN headquarters on Thursday that UN chief Ban Ki-moon is rushing his chief of staff Vijay Nambiar back to Sri Lanka to press for protection of the trapped civilians.

Sad news for Sri lanka. It looks like everyboody wants jaya. It would be poetic justice if eelam is created by congress. However the BJP with MODI and Varun Ghandhi seem to be better at "executing" the Sri Lankan solution.

My hats off to the brave people defending their motherland in the small strip of land. Against unbelievable odds their defending the freedom of their people. Love live the people and the Republic of Eelam.

Reading this article, one feels some sympathy for these people. They have no hatred of the people of eelam. However just like people become gangsters or hired hands due to poverty. In Sri Lanka they become soldiers. However in both cases whether a goonda or a sri lankan soldier you will die miserable deaths because you are doing the wrong thing.

Many of the sri lankan keyboard warriors drink in their blood because they dont care whether a 1000 soldiers died, their more intrested whether 10 eelam people are buthchered.

I hope that those Sri Lankans in Houston and other countries enjoying a great time will stop behaving so shamefully and help end your country's occupation of eelam.

Its like how it was with India and Pakistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, Singapore and Malaysia. Untill you and others wake up to reality, this war will carry on .... and you will still be writing comments in patriotic sinhala blogs ...

If you are concerned about child soldiers then plz ask your occupying forces to vacate Tamil homeland .. dont come with the crap that tamil homelnad is in Tamilandu. Eelam Tamils are willing to forgo Sri Lanka to Sinhalas in return for Eelam .

Patriots,

This is your victory! It is the victory of the cause of freedom in every land. In all our long history we have never seen a greater day than this. Everyone, man or woman, has done their best. Everyone has tried. Neither the long years, nor the dangers, nor the fierce attacks of the enemy, have in any way weakened the independent resolve of the Lankan nation ...

My dear friends, this is your hour. This is not victory of a party or of any class. It's a victory of the great Sri Lankan nation as a whole. We were the first, in this ancient island, to draw the sword against terrorist tyranny. After a while we were left all alone against the most ruthless and cruel terrorist group that has been seen. We were all alone for year upon year.

Did anyone want to give in? No!

Were we down-hearted? No!

The lights went out and the bombs came down. But every man, woman and child in the country had no thought of quitting the struggle. So we came back, after long months, from the jaws of death, out of the mouth of hell, while the world wondered: 'When shall the reputation and faith of this generation of Lankan men and women fail?' I say that in the long years to come, not only will the people of this island but of the world, wherever the bird of freedom chirps in human hearts, look back to what we've done and they will say: 'Do not despair, do not yield to violence and tyranny, march straightforward and die, if need be, unconquered.'

Now we have emerged from one deadly struggle - a terrible foe has been cast on the ground and awaits our judgment and our mercy - but there is another foe who occupies large portions of the western world, a foe stained with cruelty and greed: the Tamil diaspora.

I rejoice that we can all take a night off today, and another day tomorrow. After tomorrow we must begin the task of rebuilding our hearth and homes, doing our utmost to make this country a land in which we all have a chance, in which we all have a duty. And we must turn ourselves to fulfill our duty to our own countrymen, and to our our gallant allies in this mighty struggle. We will go hand in hand with them. Even if it is a hard struggle, we will not be the ones who will fail.

Cheers!

What Are The Diplomatic Options for Dealing With Sri Lanka?
Mark Leon Goldberg - May 13, 2009 - 1:13pm

Over at Tapped, Josh Linden asks whether the American strategy of "weaponizing the IMF" through blocking a loan to Sri Lanka is enough to stop the ongoing crisis there.

The way I see it, the immediate concern should be two fold. 1) stop the government shelling of the densely populated warzone. 2) Let international humanitarian organizations into concentration camps that are holding many tens of thousands of Tamils who have managed to flee the conflict zone. (As it stands now, the military is running the camps and preventing the media and groups like the International Committee for the Red Cross from accessing the facilities. If you have any doubt about the deplorable state of these camps, see this Channel 4 report.)

The question is: how can these twin goals be achieved?

Military intervention is obviously out of the question. Security Council unity is also difficult to acheive on this issue because Russia and China are blocking efforts to even mention the crisis in formal council meetings. Other options need to be explored.

Advocacy groups like Human Rights Watch, the International Crisis Group and The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect seem to advocate going after the purse strings. Blocking the IMF loan was the first salvo of this diplomatic response. The next could be getting Japan--Sri Lanka's largest creditor--to use its influence to try and reign in the government.

The point of this strategy is to present the Sri Lankan government with a clear choice. And if Columbo continues to treat IDPs as criminals and use hospitals for target practice then it should expect to be 1) without a stable source of credit 2) treated as a pariah on the international stage. These are the stakes.

One thing I would like to see is President Obama say something publicly about the situation in Sri Lanka. As I wrote in my TNR piece, American messaging on this has thus far been strong. Ambassador Rice and Secretary Clinton have been hitting the right notes. It's time for their boss to join them

tharu22 said...

wijayapala said...

Dear Roy,

"wijayapala if Sinhala didnt occupy Tamilhomeland there wouldnt be a need for 5000000s of Child soldiers etc"

I suggest you read your history. There was hardly an SLA in the N-E before the war began in 1983 and certainly much less at the time the LTTE was established in 1976. It was only after the LTTE began running around killing policemen like Bastianpillai that the SLA had to step in.

After the LTTE is fully destroyed there will be little need for the SLA in the N-E. It is true that casualties are currently heavy, but that will end after the LTTE is finished.

wijayapala said...

Dear FreedomHater,

"you saying 200 fighters holding out 5 divisions. is that brave or what ?"

Actually it's pretty cowardly when you consider that they're hiding behind 50,000 unarmed Tamils, and shooting the ones trying to escape.

Hopefully after Thalaivar croaks, the "terrorists" will choose to win Tamils' rights through non-violent means that will not ruin the Tamils the way that armed struggle has.

Then why doesn't everything get finished and army just moves on? because LTTE is invincible to bombs? Satellite images show, in WORST CASE, that there are some shells fired by whoever, not that everything has bombed to dust. But tell me, what's your version? Army has bombed everything to dust, but LTTE is invincible, so they withstand all bombs like supermen and fight? Doesn't seem to be the case even according to TamilNut pictures. How much is too much? The world must act to halt ethnic cleansing in Sri Lanka
by Indira Ravindran

At least 400 civilians (100 children included) were killed, and thousands were wounded in the bloodiest weekend since the renewal of the Sri Lankan civil war. Particularly gruesome was the fact that on May 11th, mortar was fired into a government-designated “safe zone”, where civilians had been urged to take shelter.

Just when it seemed that the situation could not get much worse, it did. Dozens of wounded who had survived the weekend’s shelling, died in a new round of fire targeting a makeshift hospital. World governments have responded to this carnage with much hand-wringing and with grave expressions of concern, but no decisive action.

The US and UK issued a joint statement calling on “all sides to end hostilities immediately”.

The Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL), on the other hand, continues to terrorise its own citizens from the air, sea and land, with impunity. It has barred international media and humanitarian personnel from the war zone. It does so because it is the democratically elected leadership of a sovereign state, and because it enjoys excellent relations with other sovereigns who also double as arms vendors/ investors/ partners in the ‘war against terror’.

One must name names: India has yet again squandered an opportunity for principled and courageous leadership, with its confused, opportunistic involvement, first with one side, then with the other, in this decades-old war. By ignoring Colombo ’s rights violations, and by denying its proximity to the Rajapakse regime, India has alienated its own Tamil population. Others – China , Pakistan , Iran , Japan , Russia - hold leverage over Colombo , in their capacity as weapons-suppliers or as investors in massive infrastructural projects.

Some of these players are invested in the military annihilation of the LTTE, because this could send a strong signal to separatist movements within their own territories. None of these sovereigns will risk mixing up ethics with strategic / economic calculations.

The only recourse now is for the United Nations to intervene; and for this, it first needs to be empowered to act. At a minimum, China and Russia must be prevailed upon not to veto a resolution, should one be drafted.

U.N. spokesman Gordon Weiss described the weekend’s civilian death toll as a “bloodbath”, noting that the world body had predicted such a scenario. Similar predictions and warnings have been issued for the past 3-4 years from within Sri Lanka , by activists and aid workers.

Since 2006, they have tried desperately to draw the world’s attention to the government’s closing off of the humanitarian corridor linking Jaffna peninsula to the rest of the country; the routine disappearances of Tamil youth; the rape of Tamil women by Sri Lankan Armed Forces (SLAF) personnel on patrol; and the targeted attacks on media personnel. These warnings went largely unheeded. It appears that, as of this moment, the world has not grasped that ethnic cleansing is underway: one wonders why the Sri Lankan situation does not make the cut.

Not enough numbers?

UN estimates show 6500 civilian deaths since the start of the SLAF’s offensive six months ago, not including the weekend’s casualties. Up to 80 000 Sri Lankans of all ethnicities and political ideologies have perished since 1983. Hundreds of thousands of Tamils have been dispersed around the world. In India alone, there are 80, 000 refugees, spread across the state of Tamilnadu in 117 heavily-policed camps.

Not enough brutalization of rights?

President Mahinda Rajapakse and his brothers have fashioned fascist responses to internal dissent, and have steadily emerged as South Asia ’s most corrupt and ruthless political family. The social and democratic fabric of the island has been weakened, media outlets are targeted for attack, journalists are intimidated, and some like Lasantha Wickramatunga, have paid with their own lives, for their commitment to truth.

Not enough of an “ethnic” angle to render it intriguing?

Shamefully, the situation has now degenerated into what can be called an “ethnic conflict”, although it has its origins in principled struggles for constitutional rights dating to the time of Sri Lankan independence (1948). The current Colombo regime appears to have borrowed notes from 1930s Europe as well as 1990s Rwanda and Bosnia . Prior to the recent news ban, international observers had documented the widespread torture and disappearances within government-run camps for the internally displaced (IDPs). GOSL has announced plans to herd the remaining Tamil civilians into enclosures that will bear the Orwellian title of ‘welfare villages’, where they will be held captive for an estimated period of three years.

It is obvious that Tamil areas ravaged by the war will be re-populated by ethnic Sinhalese, thereby skewing the demographics.

The question remains, how much is too much? What is the trigger that will convince world opinion-makers that this is ethnic cleansing; that it could only get worse; and that there is a still a chance to prevent full-scale genocide?

We have but few options. The UN Security Council must enforce a permanent ceasefire, and international journalists and aid workers must be allowed in immediately. The UN must negotiate with the LTTE and GOSL for the peaceful release of civilians, and government-run IDP camps must be brought under international supervision.

A long-term process of de-mining the area, tracing the disappeared, and documenting war crimes (by all parties) must be initiated, in order to prepare the climate for a negotiated political settlement to the conflict.

Any settlement must include the safe return of refugees from India and elsewhere. GOSL has flouted humanitarian law, and human decency. It has failed in its most basic duty to protect the lives of its citizens, and has sacrificed its minority population in the name of national security. It has rendered its country and the entire region insecure.

This spectacle has gone on long enough, and there is no more time to lose. The world – and this includes India – still has a chance to secure justice for the dead and the living.

Indira Ravindran teaches International law and politics in Shanghai, China.

Ho Ho Freedom Fighter (A.K.A. Mr. Bean), we're terribly scared of your subtle threat. The defence council is just met in an emergency session to discuss this grave threat. Ok, we're so scared of you...We concede, pls come to SL & takeover the whole island not just N&E.

(That's a pretty neat (a bit lame though) joke. Can you do one better?)

Freedom Fighter (Mr. Bean) you're revolutionary hero MIA also has "Paper Planes". Maybe you can make a fleet with your own one. The other day I heard that Oprah squeezed MIA's hand and the entire diaspora got an instant orgasm.

Yo Dogs and Gays..I lknow you guys so frustrated with not being able to finish the war and poverty.

But it is interesting that tossers come here read our thoughts. then unable to defend the messages you go back picking on spelling and gram-mer.

That is a clear indication you inability logically argue to prove a point. Because you have no righteousness on you side.

* Sri Lanka buying Russian military helicopters – report
Fri, May 15, 2009, 01:16 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
May 15, Colombo: Sri Lanka has ordered a number of military transport helicopters and other weaponry from Russia, Russia's RIA Novosti news agency said today quoting Sri Lanka's Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

The Russian state-owned news agency reported that the Defence Secretary in an exclusive interview has said that the helicopters had been already ordered.

"I have managed to reach an agreement with Russia on a loan to purchase military equipment, primarily helicopters for the air force, and other weaponry," Novosti quoted Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

The report said the Defence Secretary did not specify the amount of the deal or the number of helicopters. Reportedly the helicopters are for transporting the military personnel.

"We will need them in the future. We are already using [Russian-made] Mi-17 and Mi-24 helicopters, and we need more," Rajapaksa was quoted.

According to RIA Novosti the Sri Lankan official has indicated that Sri Lanka was willing to develop stronger military ties with Russia and to share combat experience. Defence Secretary has noted that Russia could help the mine clearing operations in the North.

Russia, which has fought a separatist war against the Chechen rebels and shares the common experience of terrorism with Sri Lanka, is a valuable diplomatic partner to Sri Lanka in its war against the LTTE terrorism.

Sri lanka armed forces are in a desperate attemot to break into the safe zone before the election result tommorrow. The desperation reflect both the army and sri lanka's fears. Its inevitable that they need to declare ceasefire and accept eelam.

The brave eelam armed foces will definetely hold onto to their territory regardless. Brick and stones can break bones but not the will of a people.

It is reported that the 58th Division has resorted to the use of gas masks amidst indiscriminate fire setting by the LTTE. The masked troops are in a strenuous effort to rescue the trapped civilians amongst the large fire. This seems to be the latest method adapted by the tiger supremo to stop civilians from leaving as even high profile mahveer families seem to be abandoning them.
So far over 7000 civilians have crossed over during the last 48 hours.
Both 58th and 53rd Divisions seem to be just over 1km away from the 59th Division and expected to merge tonight. 59 Div is dealing with a newly made earth bund on its way towards the 58th and 53rd.
Special Forces groups have infiltrated the tiger held area on the look out for the LTTE leader. He is in the process of destroying his assets and the civilians around him to discredit the government.

when? since you talk about a ceasefire, it can't be *after* the military operation is finished anyway.

If this doesn't happen before that, ponna-vindran will have to admit a crushing and humiliating defeat.

Members of the United Nations Security Council, have strongly condemned the LTTE for its acts of terrorism over many years, and for its continued use of civilians as human shields and acknowledged the legitimate right of the Government of Sri Lanka to combat terrorism.
