Fighting moves to Thevipuram

Reports from the Vanni indicate heavy fighting is currently going on at Thevipuram. Thevipuram was previously located in the original no fire zone, and was occupied by the Sri Lankan army on February 2nd. The LTTE first broke through the forward defence lines of the 58th division on Sunday night, and has since launched several attacks on the 57th and 58th divisions at Thevipuram and Visuamadu. Most recently the heaviest fighting has now moved to Thevipuram, with hundreds of Sri Lankan soldiers killed in combat.

Sri Lanka`s military has encircled the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in a mere 37 sq km (15 sq miles) on the island nation`s northeastern coast and is fighting to finish a separatist war that has raged off and on since 1983.

Troops killed 16 LTTE fighters in battles Tuesday and Wednesday, military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

The Tigers could not be reached for comment. The pro-LTTE web site www.TamilNet.com quoted an unidentified rebel official as saying fighters Tuesday blew up six army artillery positions 18 km behind the front, and killed 50 soldiers in the assault.

Nanayakkara denied the report: `We just don`t allow those gun positions to come under attack. They are well-protected even when they are far from the fighting.`

Soldiers received 378 fleeing Tamil civilians Tuesday, bringing the total to 1,054 since Friday, he said. Nearly all of the 38,900 who fled this year came out in a single spurt in early February when troops reached an older no-fire zone.

There are tens of thousands still in the war zone. Aid agencies, rights groups and the government have urged the LTTE to stop holding them by force as human shields. The government says 70,000 are there, while the Red Cross says there are 150,000.

The Tigers insist people are staying out of choice and accuse the government of intentionally shelling civilians, which the military denies. It says troops have slowed their offensive to protect people.

The government has rejected a Tiger ceasefire call as a ploy to buy time to re-arm, and pledged safe passage to civilians.

Although few doubt the military shortly will destroy the Tigers as a conventional force, few also expect the group to stop carrying out unconventional attacks like a suicide bombing that killed 14 in southern Sri Lanka Tuesday.

Thousands of people deposited money into Kotelawala's Golden Key company expecting high returns. He commanded the confidence of investors partly with his credentials as Singapore's representative in Sri Lanka.

Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate Harsha Sethunga also prohibited Kotelawala from selling off assets of Golden Key without court approval.

Kotelawala was not present and had told the court that he was ill. He was arrested and detained two weeks ago.

The magistrate's court also issued a warrant for the arrest of Kotelawala's wife Cecile, a director of Golden Key and consul general for Cyprus.

“The LTTE has been defeated and must surrender,” the ICG said, adding that the group’s current actions demonstrated its “utter disregard for the Tamil people”.

“The international community should send its strongest possible messages to the LTTE that it must negotiate a surrender. In exchange, key international parties should commit to supervise the surrender and to guarantee the physical protection of any surrendered fighters.”

On the other hand, if the LTTE continues to use civilians as a human shield and forcibly recruit children and adults, the report suggests that its leadership should face international justice for its serious war crimes. In my opinion, once Jaffna is secure, its pretty much end game for sla. 5-6 divisions would have been battered or wiped, the morale of the new recruits will be one of fear rather than confidence of victory and the international committee will laugh at the army and the govt for how pathetic and stupid they are.
But thats just my thoughts on it. IT is funny how dw says the old tactics are no match for the 'new' sla and the very next article is sla suffers temporary setback. Its too funny.
