LTTE overuns PTK junction; fighting reported up to Visuamadu

Latest news from the battlefield indicates LTTE fighters have overun the PTK junction, with fighting reported all the way to Visuamadu. The 57th division, which is supposed to be avoiding combat and being held as a "reserve" force, was hit in attacks that have penetrated all the way through the 58th division to the secondary reserve lines. Its is not clear whether the LTTE plans to hold the territory, or if it is only a hit and run attack meant to damage the Sri Lankan forces. Reports indicate hundreds of Sri Lankan soldiers have been killed in the fighting. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan government has promised to completely finish the LTTE within the next 72 hours. We shall report back in 3 days as to whether this has been accomplished or not.

They are monitoring whats written here to see what the public knows and to plan their propaganda campaign. defence.lk & army.lk say that the fighting is in Chalai not those places where civilians are. It appears that the SLA advanced from Chalai into civilian "killing-field" (i.e. "safe-zone") and then went back to Chalai.; March 9, 2009 at 3:47 AM

At present the troops of the 58th division operating in the ampalwanpokkanei general area have laid siege on the CSZ.Reports indicate that infantry troops are stationed some 300m outside the safe zone while the forward elements are engaging the enemy in small attacks to enable civilians to enter government held zones.

In the Puthukuduirippu(PTK) front the tigers are desperately offering stiff resistance to the troops which is at the moment the only option left for them other than jumping in to the sea and surrendering to the SLA.Fierce fighting is raging in the eastern and the north eastern borders of PTK.Troops engaged in neutralizing the enemy will be able to breakthrough soon as tigers are loosing their cadre in high numbers on an hourly basis.Casualties on SLA is also at a high level but it is extremely low compared to the LTTE casualties.However the rumour that the war will be over in 72(or 48)hrs is a completely false claim by the SLA to stir the LTTE and their sympathizers.But we at CeylonDefence can confirm that the conventional war will be over in less than 3 weeks.; March 9, 2009 at 4:13 AM

Without seeing any pictures of 150 dead bodies, there is no reason to ever believe a claim made by the Sri Lankan army.

But the facts are probably 500 Sri Lankan soldiers have died in this fighting, so I would not doubt that 150 to 200 LTTE fighters may have died as well. That is the unfortunate nature of war.; March 9, 2009 at 8:54 AM

I had a look at the pics posted on Defence.lk website of the slain ones.One couldnt help but feel sorry for them.3 decades have passedby and still Tiger's seem to be still at the very same point where they started.
Those pics were so disturbing,though I dont believe on the methods followed by Tiger's,a life is a life.
Praying that this bloody war comes to an end anywhich way.

Just remember who's trenches those bodies were found in: the SLA bunker line. Where are all the Sri Lankan soldiers who were manning that bunker line? They are all dead, running into the hundreds.

The PACOM already discussed the matter with the Sri Lankan authorities and with SLA, it is learnt. France has reportedly expressed support to the US move.

“If the invasion comes about, it will be the first time that the Obama administration will flex its muscle overseas in a new show of American power”, The Telegraph said.

Writing on possible responses from India The Telegraph revealed:

“There are serious differences in the Indian government on how to deal with the mounting crisis in its southern backyard with the national security adviser, M.K. Narayanan, opposed to any support for military action.”

“Narayanan's main concern is a possible fallout on the Lok Sabha elections as the result of an evacuation without the explicit approval of the LTTE and any consequent spilling of Tamil blood.”

“But external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee is aware that if a US-led rescue of Tamil civilians takes place without any role for India beyond that of a spectator, New Delhi will suffer grave loss to its reputation as a regional power and an emerging global power.”

The US move is timed for the tail end of the tenure of the present Indian government.

Meanwhile, a press release from the Indian High Commission in Colombo, Friday, announced the arrival of an Indian medical team to Sri Lanka on Monday to establish an emergency medical unit at Pulmoaddai.

The medical team will comprise eight physicians and surgeons as well as para-medical staff and technical staff, carrying necessary medical equipment and medicines required for the emergency medical unit which will be engaged in the medical care of the IDPs from the North, the press release said.

Earlier Xinhua reported that this would be an Indian military hospital, staffed by doctors and personnel from the Indian Army.

The choice of Pulmoaddai, a coastal place right at the border of Northern and Eastern Provinces, known for its ilmanite deposits, is ascribed with significance by observers. The 1987 Indo-Sri Lanka accord was linked to India’s interests in Trincomalee, they point out.

In the meantime, US ambassador Blake’s speech on Friday at Taj Samudra, Colombo, harping on 13th Amendment as solution, evoked serious concern in Tamil circles.

Saying “it is clear that government forces will soon control all territory in the north with the exception of the safe zone” and cautioning Sri Lanka of possible violence from the LTTE ‘sleeper cells’, supported by Tamil diaspora, unless a power sharing political solution is worked out, what ultimately he suggests is the implementation of the 13th Amendment and elections to the provincial council of the North, now separated from the East.; March 9, 2009 at 10:26 AM

It is natural there will be some bodies there spread out throughout the trenches. The fact that the clothes are missing from many of them indiciates they have been dragged a long distance. So these bodies were spread out in the trenches of the over ran bunkers in Thevipuram. They show perhaps 30 bodies, but there were many more deaths than that. I can't prove it to you. All I am saying is people I am in contact with have informed me the photos were from Thevipuram, and that battles are still ongoing in other places.

The Sri Lankan government says these photos are from "PTK East", which is probably what they are calling the area from Thevipuram to the lagoon. These photos are not from Chalai or Palamattalan, as the topography is different, and those areas are under LTTE control at the moment. These are inland photos.; March 9, 2009 at 11:23 AM

This approach can be useful to tigers only if they claim sla casualties at 5:1 ratio. That is to cause damage at 5:1, retreat, allow the SLA to send more men to Chalai and then go back there again after some weeks ...; March 9, 2009 at 11:42 AM

Yesterday, the sources in Vanni said, LTTE counter attacked the forces in the Forward Defence Line (FDL) area and killed at least 450 SF troopers and injured over 1272 SF troopers in the Southern frontier of the Manthuvil, Kulanthai Jesus and Pandiyanveddai.

A recent survey says that from mid-2005 to now, many large international garment buyers shifted their business out of Sri Lanka and into cheaper manufacturing destinations. Over this period, 75 factories, in seven provinces, closed down, and out of this around 24 factories closed down over the past six months. The survey, which was concluded in February 2009, was conducted by a private consultant, Roy Dawson, in the Western, Southern, Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, Wayamba and North Western Provinces.

The findings show that many major foreign buyers of Sri Lankan garments shut down their offices in Sri Lanka within the past three years and also shifted their manufacturing orders to other countries.

“Out of around 50 main international garment buyers registered with the Sri Lanka Garment Buying Offices Association, 12 shut down their offices in Sri Lanka within the last three years. These buying offices were shifted mainly to Singapore, India and Pakistan. Production was shifted mainly to India, Bangladesh and Vietnam,” said Mr Dawson.

By now, around 20 steady foreign buyers are no longer operating in Sri Lanka. While the main reason for this shift in business is the comparatively higher cost of production in Sri Lanka, the unstable security situation is also a factor. For instance, buyers felt it was difficult to send technical staff to local factories for periodic factory inspections, because of security worries.

The survey also found that 75 garment factories had closed down in the seven provinces surveyed, from mid-2005 to 2009, and about 24 factories have closed down over the past six months alone. These factories were mainly located in the free trade zones in Katunayake, Biyagama, Koggala and Seethawaka Pura. Some factories were registered under the Board of Investment and some under the Textile Division of the Ministry of Industrial Development. In addition to job losses and foreign exchange losses these garment factory closures have also hit other connected industries.

These include embroidery plants, garment washing plants, corrugated carton manufacturers, label manufactures, thread manufacturers, manufacturers of plastic hangers and poly-bags, transport services providers, shipping lines, freight forwarders, customs clearing agents, food suppliers and subcontractors offering services such as fabric cutting, ironing and packaging.

The survey notes that during the period 1980 to 2004 there were more than 650 large, medium and small scale garment manufacturing plants in the island, offering direct employment to around 450,000 people and indirect employment to another 100,000.

However, since 2005, with the expiry of the Multi Fibre Arrangement and the ending of export quotas, the industry has been shrinking steadily. This is mainly attributed to the higher cost of production in Sri Lanka, compared to other garment manufacturing countries in Asia. The current global recession has also hit the garment industry and over the past 6 months the frequency of factory closures has increased.; March 9, 2009 at 11:29 PM
