Mystery of the Matching Machine Guns

Today the Sri Lankan government published an article on their official website (Defence.lk) titled "Army annihilates terror pocket in Anandapuram" wherein they claim to have killed a large number of LTTE fighters and recovered 50 T-56 rifles. There are a few obvious problems about the story that I would like to point out here. The first problem, which is a recurring theme in nearly all of the governments claims, is that they haven't shown any bodies of dead LTTE fighters. They claim to have recovered 31 bodies of LTTE fighters but instead they choose to show this photograph that highlights their day's victory:

We realize an old rusted container is a big accomplishment to highlight, but when they claim to have recovered 31 bodies of LTTE fighters, don't you think that would be more important to show? But we shouldn't criticize them too much, because that isn't all they showed. There was also this:

In case you can't figure out what it is, I will help you out. That's half a boat they recovered. It's basically as shocking and amazing as a full boat, but just divide that by two. Maybe they should have renamed their article to "Army annihilates half a boat and old rusted container in Anandapuram". That would have made it a little more clear for the readers, and would have removed any confusion.

But let us move on to the real point of this article, that is the picture of guns they claimed to have recovered. We already mentioned that they failed to show any pictures of dead LTTE fighters, even though they claimed to have recovered 31 bodies, but at least they showed us the picture of the guns they recovered, right? There is just one problem with the picture. They claimed to have recovered 50 T-56 rifles, but the picture shows over 90 T-56 rifles (you can click the photo for a bigger version):

In fact, there are more than 50 T-56 rifles in the first two rows alone. It was just a few days ago that we caught Army.lk posting a fake photograph of "captured weapons" that had actually been taken a year before. Unfortunately, in this case, the Defence.lk editors were smart enough to erase the exif data that shows the date a picture was taken, so we cannot know when this photo was actually taken, but we can be certain it is a fake because the number of rifles doesn't even come close to matching the story.

There is one more dead give away that shows this photograph is a fake, and I am sure the editors are too stupid to have figured this out. Just look at the model of gun that has been recovered. There are two types of T-56 rifles used by the LTTE. The most common rifle used is the regular T-56 (top of following photo), which has a wooden shoulder support, and the other version is the T-56-1 (bottom of following photo), which has a collapsable shoulder support:

Up till now whenever the security forces have recovered large numbers of T-56 rifles in battles, the majority have been regular T-56 rifles, with a smaller mix of T-56-1 rifles included. But in today's photograph, every single rifle is a T-56-1 model, which is almost impossible based on past experience. How can there be nearly 100 T-56-1 rifles without a single regular T-56 rifle included? The only way that would happen is if the guns were brought out of a storage room - not collected from a battlefield. In the Sri Lankan army's storage rooms they divide the guns based on model. When a soldier was sent to bring guns for this photograph, he foolishly took all the guns from a single pile, which contained the rarer T-56-1 rifles. So rather than being a mix of various guns (as would occur in a real battle), the entire collection of guns were identical - something that is statistically impossible in a real battle.

To give you an idea of what recovered guns should look like, here are several photographs from the government following large battles. Note the mix of guns, with most being regular T-56 rifles with wooden shoulder supports (you can click on the pictures for larger versions):

In literally every single case most of the recovered guns are regular T-56 rifles, but in today's photograph, every single gun is a T-56-1 model, nearly 100 of them. Please look at the original photograph again (see the enlarged version by clicking on the photo, it really highlights this point):

Such an occurence is statistically impossible, and the only way they could have 100 T-56-1 rifles together like this is if they brought them out from a storage room, where the rifles are stacked based on model.

Once again these two points prove the story created by Defence.lk is not true. They claim to have recovered 50 T-56 rifles, yet they show nearly 100 rifles in the photograph. And the fact that every single one of the 100 rifles is the rarer T-56-1 model proves this photograph is set up taking guns from a storage room.

The new editors of army.lk lack english knowledge:

"Later on, all five dead bodies of the Tigers, nineteen T-56 weapons, seven hand grenades, four I-com sets, one Rocket Propeller Gun, seventeen improvised explosive devices (IED), four flak jackets, nine Arul bombs, 554 rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition, one light machine gun and several cyanide capsules."

Peter/Badri, any developments from PTK battles?

From Nadesan's interview in Puthinam, he mentioned that once the FWL sla personnels in and around PTK are dismantled, then LTTE will have walk in the park for rest of the Wanni mainland. According to him and other folks, they gotta soften up the SLA's belly a bit before the one knock-out punch will do the final blow.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

Like you said, one minute Charles Anthony is supposedly living a luxurious protected life overseas, and the next minute they say he is leading at the front lines and injured in combat. These monkeys don't even see how their own stories contradict each other.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

The Sri Lankan Army keeps sending reserve forces to fill the gaps as they get hit. At some point there won't be more reserves to fill all the gaps and the wall will start to break. Once that happens, and they can no longer restrict the movement of the LTTE, there will be panic and the LTTE will be able to attack from surprising areas - but at that time there will be no back up forces in key places such as Mannar and Vavuniya. Jaffna may also be short on troops. We have to be patient and just wait for the final outcome. Things can collapse for the Sri Lankan army over night once the reserves run out.

Bhairav said...

Further according to Nadesan, the new LTTE recruits fight ferociously in the current Wanni battles, and no wonder the killing of innocent Tamils and raping of Tamil women by SLA in Wanni transformed them into very determined fighters.

Most of us lay people were expecting LTTE to do the same as they did before. But, LTTE knew that SLA/India had prepared for Unceasing Waves style attacks.

They have allowed SLA in dangerously close, in this Eelam War. But, that has been a very good way to neutralize multi-barrel/arty/air raids.

Now it is head-to-head combat in which LTTE has terrain/commitment advantage.

I think they have grouped teams of 250 cadres under each of the 15 field commanders.

Feb. was Col. Vithusha's team, Mar. was Col. Lawrence's team and end of Mar./Apr. is Col. Bhanu's team.

Interesting times ahead. Early May is TN election, campaign will be in full swing this month.

They'll have to reduce civilian kill rate in the 'death zone' to less than 20 a day to keep TN voters under lid.

UN AFRAID OF SRI LANKAN GOV
UNITED NATIONS, April 3 -- Weeks after UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called for a suspension of fighting in Sri Lanka, his Office's follow-up statement on April 3 omitted the request. Rather, apparently implementing the UN's new strategy of putting more pressure on the Tamil Tiger rebels than the government, Ban's Associate Spokesman Farhan Haq read out a statement that the Tamil Tigers are violating international humanitarian law, while the government is merely "reminded of its obligations."

Inner City Press asked, what happened to the call for a suspension of fighting? Video here, from Minute 15:45. Mr. Haq pointed to the statement he had just read out, which did not refer to a suspension of cessation of fighting, much less to a ceasefire. When Inner City Press first asked Ban about the killing in Sri Lanka, Ban said he could not call for a ceasefire because Sri Lanka was not on the Security Council's agenda.

After then-President of the Council Yukio Takasu told Inner City Press that Ban's statement is not what the UN Charter says, Ban called for a suspension of fighting. But Sri Lanka's president has said he will not give in to international pressure and that the fighting will continue. Inner City Press asked for a reply from Ban, but none was given. Then on April 3 there issued a prepared statement omitting any call for a suspension of fighting.

Ban Ki-moon in car on phone, call for suspension of fighting not shown

Ironically, Haq then read out a statement by the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs which described "aerial bombing of the No-Fire Zone" in northern Sri Lanka. Particularly given the reports that the Tamil Tigers' rag-tag air force has been destroyed, to say "aerial bombing" is to say "Sri Lankan government," but to omit saying those words. Why? To jibe with Ban's new strategy of accusing the Tigers of law-breaking and merely reminding the government of obligations?

A senior UN official has told Inner City Press that this is the UN's strategy, since the government of Sri Lanka has so openly ignored Ban's calls: to pressure instead the Tamil Tigers and their supporters overseas, threatening prosecutions, and to "lay off" the government. Given the number of deaths that have been caused by shelling and aerial bombing by the government, to "lay off" is to be complicit.

I have long since ceased to think of Sri Lanka as a "Buddhist" nation. Indeed; one must make the distinction between "Sinhala-Buddhism" and "Buddhism." Buddhism in its purest form makes no claim to ownership (ownership is simply another form of attachment). Inherent in the term "Sinhala-Buddhism" however, is an attempt to identify a unique type of "Buddhism" with one exclusive race. It is this fundamental dichotomy which forms the basis of Sinhala-Buddhist nationalism, since the time of Anagarika Dharmapala and the so-called "Buddhist revival." Thus, when one asks why the majority Buddhist community in Sri Lanka has embraced violence, racism, and discrimination to such a great extent, the answer must be that their primary motivation is the upkeep of "Sinhala-Buddhism" which in simple terms lies at the heart of Sinhala nationalism. Ultimately, one cannot separate "Sinhala-Buddhism" from "Sinhala nationalism."

It is worthwhile to examine the opposite case. Tibet is the best example. In none of his writings has the Dalai Lama called the Chinese as "terrorists." It would be easy to do so, of course. In a similar vein, he has not instructed the Tibetans to take up arms, in order to protect the "territorial integrity" of Tibet. In short, the Tibetans have offered only passive resistance. They have adapted to the situation without attempting to cause undue harm to others. Have they succeeded? Yes. They have succeeded because they have "liberated" themselves from material, physical, and mental attachments. The Buddhism that they love and cherish so much is no longer confined to Tibet - it is with them wherever they go. I believe that if Lord Buddha were alive today, that this practice of Buddhism - this practice of the ideals of tolerance, non-attachment, and respect, despite all odds - would cause even him to draw tears, in as much as the perversion of Buddhism in Sri Lanka causes untold misery and suffering day in and day out to those thousands of Tamils who can suffer only in silence.

Prabhakaran’s limousine found
Ranil WIJAYAPALA

The 58 Division troops engaged in search and clear operations in the area in the North East Puthukudiyiruppu yesterday recovered a bullet proof limousine confirmed to have been used by Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran close to a luxury air-conditioned bungalow inside the one Square Km terrain surrounded by the Security Forces on Wednesday.

Military Spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara told the Daily News that the luxury bullet proof car was recovered along with four more burnt cars closer to the luxury house.

Security Forces recovered these vehicles yesterday evening during the search and clear operations conducted in the North East of Puthukuduyiruppu, he added.

“Losing Tiger cadres, having lost all hopes for a last-minute salvation, have vandalized and set ablaze all the five cars, including the chauffeur-driven limousine, believed to have been used by top-rung Tiger leaders,” the Brigadier added.

The General Officer Commanding the 58 Division Brigadier Shavendra Silva told the Daily News that there were strong indication that Prabhakaran and Pottu Amman were inside that terrain surrounded by the troops on Wednesday.

“They have hastily retreated from the area once they got the news that troops were going to surround that area,” Brigadier Silva added. Brigadier Silva said the luxury house was yet to be cleared by the troops as it has been infected with trappings set by the fleeing Tiger cadres.

Heavy fighting raged in that area as the troops of the 58 and 53 Divisions surrounded the area on Wednesday. The 58 Division troops engaged in search and clear operation in that terrain have recovered 45 Tiger bodies inside this terrain during the search and clear operations conducted yesterday.

Earlier they recovered 21 Tiger bodies and 60 T-56 weapons.

Brigadier Silva said that some more cadres are fighting inside this one square km terrain as they have no chance to escape from the area.

DEUTSCHE BANK FILED COURT CASE AGAINST DEBT-RIDDEN SRI LANKAN GOVERNMENT

Deutsche Bank has filed arbitration proceedings against the government of Sri Lanka over non-payment in oil derivatives deals with state refiner Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC).
The Deutsche Bank claim was registered with the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) on 24 March 2009, according to the international dispute resolution centre.

The bank claims that the Sri Lankan government violated the bilateral investment treaty between German and Sri Lanka.

The dispute arose after the CPC suspended payments in several oil derivatives transactions, sold in 2007, when the deals went against it after oil prices collapsed in 2008.

Deutsche Bank sold a contract worth 100,000 barrels to the CPC.

The Sri Lankan government has appointed a committee to re-negotiate the deals, which, apart from Deutsche Bank, were also sold to CPC by Citibank, Standard Chartered, and two Sri Lanka banks; state-run People's Bank and public listed Commercial Bank of Ceylon.

Citibank had sold contracts worth 400,000 barrels, Standard Chartered 300,000, People's Bank 100,000 (including 50,000 bought from Commercial Bank), and Commercial Bank 20,000 direct (and 50,000 via People's Bank).

The original contracts were at half the volumes, but under the terms of the contract, volumes doubled when prices collapsed.

Citibank has already gone into arbitration against the CPC.

CPC did the derivatives deals to protect itself when oil prices were surging and the contracts were initially profitable for the refiner when prices hit record highs.

But CPC incurred heavy losses when oil prices fell steeply in the latter part of 2008.

Sri Lanka's Supreme Court suspended CPC payments to banks when the deals were challenged in court on the grounds of corruption.

However, that suspension was lifted in January 2009 when the petitioners withdrew their cases.

But then Sri Lanka's Central Bank stepped in and ordered CPC to suspend the transactions on the grounds that they were flawed.

To bad for these civilians:

http://defence.lk/new.asp?fname=20090404_06

They were in the wrong place at the wrong time. LTTE ambushed a group of STF and killed 11 soldiers plus 19 wounded, so in retaliation other STF personnel started killing civilians, and then claimed they were LTTE.

Just look at them, they don't even look like LTTE. They were wood collectors.

Notice the photos are blurry and in much lower resolution than normally published on defence.lk. They don't want anyone to see the details, because they obviously aren't LTTE.

Even if you look at the guns, they killed 13 people, but only 5 guns recovered. It is always the other way around - more guns than dead bodies (because some living people leave their weapons to carry the wounded). But here only 5 guns, and 13 dead. I guess the STF only had 5 guns in their storage room at the time.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

Another quick point about the photograph. They are mostly naked, which means the bodies were dragged from far away places and brought together. The story is that it was an ambush, in which case they all would have died near by in a group. The fact that they have been dragged from very far distances shows it was random civilians throughout the area.

SRI LANKA GOVERMENT HARASS 78 YEARS OLD MAN

An international group "Canadians for Genocide Education" which is an umbrella organisation with some 46 Member Associations annually picks ONE country of greatest concern re Genocide. The country picked in 2008 was Sri Lanka, and I was picked as the "Distinguished Speaker" and given an award... The plaque reads "Canadians for Genocide Education EDUCATORS AWARD 2009 Presented on March 25, 2009 to: Dr Brian Senewiratne In recognition of his dedication to inclusivity and equity in genocide education"

I was invited to come to Canada and receive the award My presentation was titled Peace with Justice in Sri Lanka Genocide of Sri Lankan Tamils. It's Causes & Solution .

It was held in the University of Toronto before a distinguished audience of academics, policy makers etc The hall was packed to capacity The flyer describing me was way over the top (as it usually is)...

The SL Govt coote Bandula Jayasekere, or to use his official title, His Excellency The Hon Bandula, etc, tried their best to block this but failed. Then they got their stooges e.g. Asoka Weerasinghe (patriot) to write scurrilous articles, published in the Mirror ?in Sri Lanka, to the Canadian Foreign Minister asking whether he had taken leave of his senses to allow me into the country.

Unable to block my entry, the next was harassment at Toronto airport ( a 4-hour search of everything, including downloading of every document including my letters to patients and going thru every scrap of paper (hundreds of pages of hand written notes, articles etc, and photocopying them all) It took about 4 hours and I was kept standing (that was after a 23-hour flight economy class which at 78 years is no small problem)

What riled the SL govt even more is action by a bunch (of goats) who are exploring putting my name up for a Nobel Prize for Peace. That is of course a nonsense project but with a one in a million chance, if it materializes, that would be a major blow for Sri Lanka. My very close association with Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu (I think I sent the photo with his arm round my shoulder) added to the concerns of the GoSL

What also of concern was that at the end of my Oration, the whole jolly audience of some 350, rose to their feet (I'll send the recording if/when I get it). This was recorded and sent to the Sri Lankan Ambassador and t the Govt in Colombo. Their blood pressures went thru the ceiling

I was scheduled to deliver the same award winning address in Malaysia (KL and Penang) and in Singapore, some 48 hours after it was delivered in Toronto.

Urgent action was needed. Someone ?Foreign Minister Bogollagama contacted the FM of Malaysia, who contacted the Minister of Home Affairs who contacted the CID who contacted Immigration asking them to prevent me entering the country stating I was a "Security risk"!!!!!

I said that if a 78-year old senile man was security risk for Malaysia, they should urgently review their Security set-up I smiled and asked that arrangements be made for me to get to Singapore. They said "tour ticket os from Penang. You cannot get to Penang because you cannot enter Malaysia, so you will have to buy yourself a ticket (which I did). I was then escorted to the plane by 6 police officers and an Immigration fellow.

While waiting for the flight (for 3 hours) I gave the bunch a lengthy talk on Human Rights abuse in Sri Lanka"!!!

At the end, when the flight was called, I went round to shake each one's hand. One of them, a policeman, grabbed my hand and would not let it go. Struggling to suppress tears which were welling up, he said "Doctor, all of us are deeply concerned at what we have been asked to do. Please don’t hold it against us or Malaysia."

I gave him a big hug and said "Of course I will not"

Not prepared to run the risk of a repeat performance in Singapore (where I knew Bogollagam was - having got there to persuade Malaysian Tamils to come to Sri Lanka to invest there!!), I decided to cancel the Singapore meeting and returned to Australia, where the harassment continued at Immigration here in my native Brisbane airport.

This will be raised in the Australian Parliament.

Regards and thanks for you effort which is much appreciated
Brian.

["Funny how DefenceLK can post photos of recovered bodies, that of civilians, in Ampari, but not of hundreds of LTTE cadres in Vanni."]

Yes, its funny because they could get away with the lies if they stood firm and didn't show ANY bodies. They could say "we don't show gruesome things", and then people would maybe believe them. But they say that, and then the second they get a few real bodies, they show photos and videos of them everywhere. Then a few days later when they have no bodies to show, they go back to saying "we don't show gruesome things". Just another case of them being idiots, and not understanding how to create a believable story.

All these international media believes whatever sri lanka government says...without confirming it....they need news but no access to the site...

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

One weak point that needs to be addressed is the lack of nicely organized English websites on Tamil eelam news. There are a lot of Tamil language websites, but the rest of the world can't know what is being said, and the news isn't carried in google news or other english only mediums. Even the videos being uploaded from Vanni contain witnesses speaking Tamil without subtitles. The Tamil people already know what is happening. Someone needs to create a proper media department to present these things to the rest of the world.

m.q.k said...

only one giving out updated english news is sibernews..

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

Just adding to that, Tamilnet was meant to fill that void years ago, but it more or less became the official voice of the LTTE. As such they cannot freely post news, which may be seen as off topic, too general, "frivilous" or unconfirmed. We need websites like sankathi and puthinam, but in english.

m.q.k said...

it seems tamileelamonline site is fine on other aspect but not uptodate with the news..

Peter said...

Aus situation looks like heated Bandas decided to attack cars flying Tamileelam flag. Being bandas, they filmed it as well.

Our guys can sue for damage, even have a few bandas locked-up.

The scenes Badri's video show are reminiscent that of '83, albeit much milder: What a group of bandas do when they see a Tamil in their midst.

If this is what they do in a country with functioning law and order, does one need to imagine what they are capable of in Banda-stan.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

But even sibernews only publishes news that is already available in english. But the amount of Tamil articles being published on the news sites is 20 times that. Someone needs to translate everything and publish everything into english, add subtitles to videos, etc. Its a lot of work, but for a country it is essential.

We need a comprehensive portal maintained by many people, each assigned a different duty.

The trouble with one man sites is that when that person is busy, sometimes owing to circumstances, the site dies away.

We need a fully networked site that contains civil/military news as well as well written articles of recent history.

We have had many heroes in recent past, whose achievements are not documented anywhere on the WWW.

We also ought to move to the audio/video sphere of the web, beyond the text of TamilNet.

Yes, thats an important point. In a civilized and controlled country like Australia, they are willing to riot and mob an innocent Tamil person (he even had his old mother in the back seat)! What would these animals do in Sri Lanka with full police support. Well, we know what they would do. Just post some pictures from the 83 riots, and that sums it up.

They say Sri Lanka has changed and the sinhalese are now peaceful people. Well if they can do this in Australia today, they could certainly do this in Colombo. It shows there is no change even after they have lived in a foreign peaceful country. They still hate Tamils and will kill them if they get the chance.

I think Tamilnet has finally figured out they need to present their news in a way that is appealing to western countries. Such people don't know the background and all the terrible things that have happened. When a tamil sees dead bodies of Sinhalese soldiers, he cheers because he knows the rapes and murders they committed, but people in western countries will be disgusted by it because they don't understand what has happened.

Lately Tamilnet has focused on portraying the human struggle more than the heroic aspect of the fight, and that's what the western world can relate to and understand.

Rally turns violent Australia

A PEACE rally staged by the Sri Lankan community in the city centre ended in violence yesterday when rival groups clashed near Parliament.

Two Sri Lankan men in their 20s were taken to hospital suffering minor cuts and bruises after scuffles broke out in Collins Street about 1.45pm.

Malaka Yapa, one of the rally organisers, blamed Tamil Tiger supporters for the clashes.

Tamil Tiger supporters claim they were attacked without provocation on their way to a separate rally.

A police spokeswoman said no arrests were made but appealed for witnesses to the assaults

I suspect Puthinam will have more on this later in the day.

Peter said...

The problem with most of our English language websites is that their reproduce TamilNet articles.

We all visit TamilNet, we don't need the same again.

Our sites need to do more to translate some of the works appearing in Puthinam/Sankathi or even Tamil Naatham.

We should also work on more interactive, audio-visual presentation of information already available on TamilNet.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

["i still cant believe UN is only issuing statement.."]

The UN is a show peace and nothing more. The real people who decide when to intervene are the superpowers, and that is based on their own profit potential.

The UN failed to do anything when 1 million Rwandans were murdered. The UN has historically sat by watching as people have been massacred throughout the world.

Just as a side note, the lack of English presentation of Tamil news extends even to Tamil Nadu. Again its the bi-polar stories of the Sri Lankan army. They want to say LTTE is firing artillery from within the no fire zone, but then they want to also say they bombed an artillery in PTK and another they captured in PTK.

So please make up your mind. Are the LTTE keeping artillery outside of the no fire zone, or are they keeping them inside the no fire zone? If they were keeping them inside the no fire zone there is no need to bring them to the PTK front lines, as they can fire 15 kilometers and more.

The video of LTTE transporting the artillery gun deep inside PTK is proof they are not firing from the no fire zone.

Karuna was above all the cost of the ceasefire move. The IC, targeted by this move, has not removed the Tiger Ban, and has even played a very subtle Tiger-dividing game that was not timely-perceived by the Tigers’ thinking Tanks. Proof: The American ambassador shaking hands with Karuna and Pillayan. And, lately the Co-chairs went even further: Surrender !

The Palestine inti-fada movement was arrested and divided into Hamas and Fata by such a successful plot led by Norway on behalf of the IC.

And now the UN having guilty conscious mind of letting Tamils killed and injured in hundred daily, put the blame on Tigers, and talks as if Tigers are holding the Vanni Tamils. On the other hand, the IC has completely failed to see the Praba’s and Tamil’s determination. The LTTE is still there and kicking around and has not collapsed as they all hastily expected.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

Now the Sri Lankan army is releasing seperate stories to news reporters that it doesn't even publish on its own websites. They tell the press reporters they recovered 93 bodies, yet the story doesn't even show up on their daily website reports:

"Brig Nanayakkara said security forces had recovered the bodies of 93 rebels killed in Puthukkudiyiruppu - thought to be their last stronghold."

So we have three different casualty reports being released by the government now. 1) Army.lk reports, 2) Defence.lk reports, 3) Newspaper reports. None of the three ever match with each other.

Peter said...

Lol! Video is on Puthinam now; they can't do much to have it taken off. I hope TamilNet uploads it as well, for everyone else to see bandas' "peace rally".

Vannian,

Sangam is a very good site, but it belongs to a US organization that has to tread carefully. They are very selective on what they publish. I wrote two or three articles for them but gave-up because of the 'PC' constraints.

We shouldn't go on the 'gutter' path of banda sites, but I think we need to be tabloid in style to spread the news to the masses.

Real Editor Badrinath, this display of tribal antics is not surprising, after all they are self proclaimed half animals. Only I wonder if it was actually a lion that raped their forebare, or perhaps some type of ape.

Another good site in English is http://voicesinexile.wordpress.com/

It's like sangam.org, but from the point of view of youth in the Diaspora. They put out good ideas on how to argue the Tamil case.

I hear the idea of an English news site. It's not TamilNet's fault that it has been labeled -- it's actually very professional and accurate. But if you don't disown the LTTE, Westerners listen to SL govt saying you're a Tiger, no matter how true what you say is.

So, having stuff in English is important, but it may not be most effective to have it in tabloid-style. The problem is not just getting facts out there. We also need people to see & understand that it is true, too, not just dismiss it and move on.

That's why I like the Voices in Exile blog. They tackle issues of terrorism, human rights, the root problem, etc. very well. They explain things with context and source their arguments. It's the same kind of thing you can send out to your non-Tamil friends and it's hard for them to refute. The truth is on our side, we just have to frame it properly for others.

It seems GoSL terrorists are going to kill at least 5,000 innocent Tamils by walking into NFZ.

Sri Lanka appears to be on the verge of crushing Tamil Tiger rebels after decades of fighting but its success has blown a hole in the nation's finances and forced it to seek an IMF bailout.

Negotiations are underway with the International Monetary Fund for a 2.4 billion-dollar rescue package as the island's economy reels from the twin effects of unprecedented war spending and the global financial crisis.

Sri Lanka has turned to the IMF after earmarking 1.6 billion dollars this year to financing the military drive against the Tiger rebels that the government says it is close to winning.

This comes on top of three billion dollars spent in the previous two years.

President Mahinda Rajapakse has vowed to get the IMF money on his terms and not "pawn or sell our motherland to obtain any monetary aid".

But a source close to the negotiations said Sri Lanka would have to make "painful adjustments".

"This means allowing the rupee to depreciate, cutting subsidies and a freeze on state sector jobs," the source said. Economists say the country may also be forced to raise interest rates after cutting them to spur a slowing economy.

Economists say the money worries caused by the high defence spending have been compounded by the worldwide slump, a halt to privatisation of state enterprises and the central bank's battle to defend the rupee that has drained foreign exchange reserves.

An IMF team left Sri Lanka last Tuesday after spending more than a week in the island to discuss terms of an aid package.

The IMF "continues discussions with the authorities on the latest economic developments and the economic programme to be supported by the IMF to improve the country's balance of payment conditions," an IMF spokesman said.

The financial body has made no comment on any conditions for bailout.

But the source said: "The IMF mission wants to see progress before they can recommend to their board on April 25 that Sri Lanka is ready to receive this facility."

A Western diplomat said there could be an initial drawdown of 480 million dollars from the IMF by the end of the month if negotiations go smoothly.

He said the country "desperately needs the money" to make payments for imports and loans.

Sri Lanka needs around 900 million dollars to repay loans in 2009, the central bank has said.

Last year, the government made close to half a billion dollars in debt payments, said Colombo University economist Sirimal Abeyratne.

"We're now in sort of a debt trap, borrowing to pay off what we borrowed earlier," Abeyratne said.

Economists say the country lost much of its foreign exchange reserves defending its currency, paying for imports and servicing loans.

Foreign currency reserves fell from 3.5 billion dollars last August to 1.7 billion dollars by December as the central bank sought to prop up the rupee, official figures show. Reserves have fallen further since then, analysts say, but no official figures are available.

"Sri Lanka tried to hold the exchange rate without an institutional framework to support it and lost most of its reserves," said the "Fuss Budget" column on Lanka Business Online, Sri Lanka's main business website.

The IMF talks come against a background of growth slowing to 6.0 per cent in 2008 from 6.8 per cent the previous year, hit by sliding exports of tea and clothing as Sri Lanka's main world markets went into recession.

{{{{The government is in dire need of the IMF loan and fast, to tide over its financial crisis. From all available information, Sri Lanka lost over two thirds of its foreign reserves defending the "Rupee" value against the US dollar from September 2008. National reserves therefore fell to US $ 1.4 billion in January 2009 from 3.4 billion in early September, 2008. Since then, Sri Lanka has spent US $ 290 million defending the Rupee with no additional reserve accumulations. That apart, this government has to fix problems created in the banking sector due to defaulted oil derivatives.

Meanwhile it continues to mismanage, plunder and waste public monies. It has absolutely no clue about what development in a country is. China and Iran it depended on for credit lines are also caught in the global melt down. Even if China continues with its promised programmes in constructing the Hambantota harbour and the Norochcholai coal power plant, Iran with its Uma-oya project, that would not in any way solve the balance of payment deficits the government is currently burdened with.

Without a quick loan to face the balance of payment crisis, the public sector could collapse due to local debts, salary, overtime, allowances and advance payment requirements for end April and after.

What would a "post LTTE" or as some call it a "post conflict" era look like with such economic crisis under a militarily guided regime ? A militarily backed regime in such crisis, can not afford to allow its citizens to enjoy democracy, even if it is going to be a "Sinhala only democracy". It can not afford to allow media freedom once again. Especially in Sinhala media, for that would allow space for lobbying and campaigning against many issues outside the war, even if there is an "editorial self censorship" on war related news and information.

This government can not afford to allow any of the democratic structures it militarily dismantled in the name of "war against Tamil terrorism" to be operative once again, because that would bring people onto the streets in the South, asking for pay hikes, overtime, bonuses and possibly against heavy corruption at the highest levels.

No "Constitutional Council" and "Independent Commissions" would be established honouring the 17th Amendment to the Constitution just for that reason. Only those that would have similar labels but with decoctions prepared by the Rajapaksa regime could be possible, if at all.

Militarization of the whole society would definitely continue, justified by claims of "flushing out Tiger remnants". The TID would continue to play a lead role in investigating and indicting "terrorist" informants and they could still mean any one who opposes the regime. The defence establishment would hold its forte in decision making on the strength it was the military strategy that for the first time put down the "Tiger terrorists".

That is possible on the social psyche that has been driven into the Southern polity with "one way one voice communication" that kept the media under brutal pressure. In short, "impunity continued" would be the "pay off line" of this regime that would further tighten the repression against any and all opposition and dissent.

In such a context of hard repression where democratic discourse becomes an extremely expensive rare luxury, there will be no possibility of discussing "devolution" or "justifiable solutions" to the Tamil problem. In the absence of any pressure from any quarters, this government would not bother any more to appease Tamil grievances.

The so called international community would nevertheless continue supporting rehabilitation and reconstruction programmes, in the name of "humanitarian relief". In Delhi , who ever runs the administration, the strategy would be to play "better" than the Pakistanis and the Chinese in supporting the Rajapaksa regime.

The Rajapaksa regime in turn could be expected to once again prop up the APRC as it had been doing for the last 02 years and more, for the Delhi administration and the world to hang their hopes of "a sustainable political settlement" on it for some time.

The so called moderate Tamil leaders will have no other role to play but sit along with the JHU and Weerawansa, listening to their rhetoric against any form of devolution, with which the Rajapaksa regime could prolong APRC sessions endlessly.

In short, the "post conflict" or otherwise termed the "post LTTE" era would be one when the Sinhala South would have its lessons, learning how catastrophic it is to forfeit democracy and civilised values of humanity in the name of "fighting terrorists". It would be learning that this "war against terrorism" was one that had only paved the way for a politico - military regime that now eats into their own democratic and economic lives.

One that could have been learnt with no human lives wasted, if only the South was rational and logical, instead of being emotional and racist. But that was how it was and how it would be. We are Sinhalese (Buddhists), after all.}}}

One of the grandmothers, who spoke to the Daily Mirror over the phone, said that she was able to save her 17-year-old grandson after she dragged away one of the female LTTE cadres who tried to capture her grandson. Using the opportunity, the grandson had run away and now the entire family had come to the cleared area.
