They haven't telecast the whole interview. The editor cut a lot of answers. The editor provocated the GR and just put only the answer after he was provocated.

Also independant aid workers said that tigers are shooting civillians who are escaping.

It was also revealed that IDP's are looked after well better than any other 3rd world country. We cannot supply like a developed country.

What are the similarities of BAR & BRA

3. Both have restricted timing for opening & closing
4. More importantly, Both makes Men crazy when open.

Why is it when these western media does a documentary whether it's Africa India or Sri Lanka it looks identical.Equally chaotic, dirty with people who are in rags griped in poverty and a blind expression.Even the interviews are done in ill lit enclosed, claustrophobic confinements.Take the street they showed at the beginning, out of all the streets in Colombo. This is the subtle way they create this pathetic image of a failed state in the eyes of the people of the world.Of course when they show France they never fail to show the Ifel tower or the big Ben when in England and all the other scenic places for comparison. The lighting, color contrast and quality of the film drastically improves. This is how they impress on us how we are inferior and should always be obedient to our masters if we are to reach similar prosperity, although it didn't work for the British living in cardboard boxes in London or the 1 million homeless US citizens or the 10 million who are illiterate. This alone is enough for me to suspect the conclusions they want us to make.I don't like Gothabaya Rajapaksha. But in this interview I think he was the victim. He doesn't seem to have the services of all those $1000/day PR pundits advising him how to look holy like Gorge Bush or other western leaders even after an illegal invasion to Iraq and massacre of thousands of civilians.Just a simple guy speaking his mind made to look like the Antichrist. He may still actually BE the Antichrist. But everybody's innocent until proven otherwise, right? Or does it not apply to the western media. Are they allowed to engage in a witch hunt against leaders and countries of the third world for their amusement? The reporter claims the refugees who say they are happy with the facilities provided to them are "PLANTED". Why? Is it absolutely mandatory for them to be unhappy? It may be mandatory for the reporters interests of creating a sensational news item, but why is it so difficult to believe that somebody whose life was in danger with little food and medicine all this time would now be relatively happy under the present circumstances.Of course they'd be happier if they were all accommodated in five star hotels like the reporter, but thats fantasy. Then he turns to another like minded westerner with the same interests for an "INDEPENDENT ANALYSIS"?????????? OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!!

Vanni Tamils suffer today as no people ever endured: burning bombs falling on their heads, no food, no water, deceases and floods. Any human being in this situation will try safer places, and this is what exactly the Vanni Tamils are not looking for. Are Tigers holding them forcefully? Illogical, as they are busy fighting SLA surrounding them and at the same time they cannot put order to 300000 odd people. One cannot force to stay those people who live in these dire conditions since long and have nothing more to loose.
Besides, Tigers are inviting the UN and others to come to Vanni and inquire. However, these UN and IC strange fellows pretend believing GOSL reports as tigers shooting Tamils while knowing well that there is no media freedom in Srilanka and that many valuable reporters have been already killed. Ok, Tigers are non-state members and terrorists for them, but they can have some human care for Vanni Tamils, no?

"
Actually most people in fighting area ,fear about the Srilankan government because most people are to some extent related to tigers and due to their horrible experiences in present and past of cleaning up by disappearances.World forget that ltte came from the Tamil society only.Their fear is reasonable.
This government ,racist elements and part of the Sinhala people express and support the stance not to care the Tamils as from them again LTTE will rise.I directly heard similar comments from Sinhala people, and another evidence all sinhala media in the country and in abroad hiding the casualities and you can see all the blogs the horrible words of lankans. Every tamil in the world know that goverment intently shell the places informed as security Zones and kill the people because they cant freely kill like this after they reach "safe places". .

This shelling of security zones is not new for Tamils. There are several example in the past.and no one knows what is happening to the people who reach the armed forces because there is a HIDDEN GAP in the path where army choose some people to live and select some people to disappear.Suppose 100 people reach the armed forces,a 50 people reach the 'care' camps.Others are swallowed in the hidden gap
What is the world trying to do?Is it willing to kill all the people who are behind the Tigers. This modern world became more cruel?
There is no save place in SriLanka. And people have been trained them selves to talk against Tigers in government areas as technique to survive. So truth is different from what world perceived.Suppose the people from vanni goes to Tamilnadu, they definitely express different stories. The"civilized" world continuously acting on the reports from one side.
in 1990s Airforce threw faeces of Cholera,Typhoid patients around Jaffna area (mini biological weapon to spread disease).Tamils allways aware that Genocidal Plans continuosly exist in the mind of rulers of SriLanka. If they get a chance to do without maximum international attention they definitely change to killer machine. This is now happening in SriLanka.Gotapayas recent statement reflex this 'The plan is not only to save the next generation from terrorism but to 10 generations to come".This is possible only by wiping out generation of Tamil because Ltte arise from the Tamils only. So he is doing world is looking.
If world is trying to do something they have to remove this HIDDEN GAP in the people movement pathway.
So possible way is that a foreign monitoring mission has to take full responsibility of the people from the beginning to avoid the hidden gaps ,and take care camps to prevent the harassment and disappearances. Will the world Do it?

Mar 16 Colombo: The main opposition United National Party (UNP) today charged the government for not inviting any opposition politicians to visit the battle torn areas, especially the Mannar and the Vanni hospitals.

Speaking at a press briefing held in Colombo this morning UNP parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena, who is also a surgeon, said that this is a clear sign to one-sided democracy of Sri Lanka government.

He said that he too was not allowed to visit Mannar and the Vanni hospitals not only as a politician, but also as a surgeon.

According to Dr. Jayawardena Indian doctors are to serve at the mobile hospital in the North without registering at Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).

"If Indian doctors could visit battle torn areas even without registering at SLMC why could not I," Dr. Jayawardena asked the government.

Finally he strongly criticized the Health minister Nimal Siripala De Silva, who is also the Chairman of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization blaming that he does not know even the formalities of visiting doctors.

Toronto's Tamil community is planning a huge protest Monday that is set to tie up traffic in the downtown.

The protesters plan to form a human chain that will start on Front Street, go up Yonge Street to Bloor Street, and head west down Bloor to University Avenue, where it will turn south back to Front.

The protest is meant to draw attention to the attacks by the Sri Lankan military on Tamils in that country's bloody civil war.

A similar demonstration in January drew about 45,000 people. With the weather warmer this time, this demonstration is expected to be even larger.

The protest begins at 1 p.m. and will likely last until 6 p.m. Police are advising motorists to take alternate routes during the afternoon to avoid being caught in slowed-down traffic.

The Greater Toronto Area is home to one of the largest Tamil communities outside Sri Lanka. About 200,000 Tamils live in and around the city.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in the civil war that has been ravaging Sri Lanka since 1983.

The United Nations human rights chief recently warned that civilian casualties could reach "catastrophic" proportions if the two sides do not suspend their fighting soon.

Sri Lanka's Tamil minority has been fighting for their own separate state in the north. Their cause is championed by the militant group, the Tamil Tigers. The Singhalese majority and their government oppose the separatist movement.

UN and IC should get independent agencies actually go into the 'War Zone' and see actually what is happening without the army following them everywhere they go.

Like one of the foreign workers said that she cannot say much since the SLA is following them and they are scared the SLA might kill them if they talk. Some of the workers were told not to talk to foreign media. In that case, it is clear that SLA is trying to hide something from the IC. Why weren't the media allowed to interview anyone they wanted?

As said in any court, "Everyone is innocent until it is proven in the Court of Law". No one can verify that the LTTE is firing at the civilians. The civilians could be threatened by the SLA to say such things. Nothing can true until evidence is shown that LTTE is shooting at the civilians. There are no video or pictures of this claim. GoSL don't want to allow media in the war zone, so we can believe this is highly a false statement.

Pretty much everyone is agreeing that the IDC are concentration camps similar to the camps used by Nazi. SLA makes the decision if they are allowed to leave or not.

Look at the reaction of the defense minister. He even agrees, anyone who writes news supporting LTTE will get arrested. His definition of arrested means getting abducted in a white van and killing the journalist like the others. Any one has the right to write about anything, which is called "Freedom of Speech". "Freedom of Speech" does not exist in Sri Lanka, which the IC knows about as Sri Lankan is known the most dangerous place for a journalist to be.

Thousands of Tamils protest at EU headquarters
BRUSSELS (AP) : More than 5,000 Tamils from across Europe have protested close to European Union headquarters demanding quick action to stop the bloodshed in Sri Lanka.

They called for the European Union to immediately lift a ban on the Tamil Tigers, who have been on a terror list for three years. Several protesters on Monday carried pictures of Tamil Tiger leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

The rebels have fought since 1983 for an independent state for the Tamil minority, which suffered decades of marginalization at the hands of governments dominated by the Sinhalese majority. More than 70,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

The way in which the indian newspapers are bought off by the Sri Lankan government is annoying. Just see this article today from the press trust of india:

["As the Lankan army prepares to inflict a "decisive blow" to the LTTE guerrillas, the capture of a fertilizer warehouse by the military in the Mullaitivu district has fuelled speculation about the use of chemical weapons in the war zones, officials said today."]

There is absolutely no connection between fertilizer and chemical weapons. It is true you can make a conventional bomb out of fertilizer, but that has nothing to due with chemical weapons.

The fact that thousands of bags of fertilizer were found in LTTE controlled areas just means that there are thousands of farmers in that area. Most of this fertilizer was provided by the UN and other NGOs for farming, and thats what it was used for. The PTI making up a story that this fertilizer indicates the LTTE was making chemical weapons is the most ridiculous accusation, and further proof that they are on the payroll of the Sri Lankan government.

Poorly considered propaganda like this does nothing to help the Tamil cause... in fact it does the opposite.

The most effective strategic tool that can be utilised everywhere by the "Tamil Cause" is the truth but, like the GOSL, the LTTE and its supporters, such as the ones here, diminish the strength of their arguments by offering such inflammatory and clearly disingenuous statements.

Sadly, this has the effect of bringing into question the credibility of the blog, the bloggers and whatever legitimate information that may have been proffered along the way.

UN HR chief stands by statement despite protest

By Easwaran Rutnam

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) said yesterday it stood by its statement on the crisis in northern Sri Lanka despite the Sri Lankan government raising strong objections over the contents of the statement.

OHCHR spokesman Rupert Colville told Daily Mirror by email the displacement and casualty figures which were hotly disputed by the government had been cross-checked from a number of different sources.

“We stand by our statement made on Friday. The figures are estimates, but were cross-checked across a number of different sources,” Mr. Colville said not wanting to comment further.

In her statement on Friday the United Nations Human Rights Chief Navaneetham Pillay

expressed her growing alarm at the increasing number of civilians reported killed and injured in the conflict in northern Sri Lanka, and the apparent ruthless disregard being shown for their safety.

She said that despite the government’s designation of safe -- or "no-fire" -- zones for civilians, repeated shelling had continued inside those zones.

OHCHR said a range of credible sources had indicated that more than 2,800 civilians might have been killed and more than 7,000 injured since January 20, and many of them inside the no-fire zones. The casualties are believed to include hundreds of children killed and more than a thousand injured.

"Unreal Perceptions

Denial is the leitmotiv of Rajapakse propaganda. Deny that there is a humanitarian crisis in the Vanni; deny that the trapped civilians suffer from hunger and sickness; deny that its forces are firing into areas with large civilian presences, including into the no-fire zones; deny the large number of civilian casualties (964 in Pothumaththalan hospital in the first 10 days of March, 95% of them from ‘safe areas’, according to the website, Transcurrents); deny that the displaced are being held in open prisons; deny that Lankan Forces too are suffering heavy casualties as the brutal resistance of the Tigers turn the final battle zone into a meat-grinder. Sometimes the denials are crude and shrill; sometimes they are sophisticated and measured. And if one half of these denials are true, the regime must be near-infallible.

A few years ago the government packed off the IMF; until a month ago it was declaring its ability to manage without the IMF - because Mahinda Chinthana has made us immune to the global financial storm. Today the regime has gone back to the same IMF on bended knees while telling the public that the IMF offered a loan, unconditionally. It is almost as if the government believes and wants us to believe that Sri Lanka is considering taking the IMF loan as a favour to the IMF.

IMF loans come with conditionality’s, always harsh, often harmful. Sri Lanka had to go back to the IMF in the guise of a supplicant because the regime mismanaged the economy, because it ignored the signs of a financial scissors crisis, and continued to spend liberally the money it did not have. When reputed international organisations warned about the dangers ahead, they were accused of being anti-Sri Lankan. Today the regime’s denials of a financial crisis would sound pathetically inane even to a vast majority of its supporters.

The way in which the indian newspapers are bought off by the Sri Lankan government is annoying. Just see this article today from the press trust of india:

I agree this is an article that does little to be balanced but that does not suggest the press in India are bought off by the Sri Lankan Gov’t anymore than an article you agree with from a Tamil Nadu publication was paid for by the LTTE. It is your limited perspective that leads you down this path, nothing more.

Once again you resort to unsubstantiated and generally ill-considered bluster to buttress your stand but in doing so lessen the value of your message. This is likely due to you being a young man with little real-world experience in terms of social and formal education. I would guess you to be early twenties, living in Scarborough and most likely you have never set an adult foot in the Vanni nor have you ever been involved in the newspaper business.

Maybe you need to turn this blog over to folks who really are in and from the North and have seen the true cost of this tragic war… or at least use some common sense when preparing your glib and trite propaganda. The SLA is guilty of many things and you do not need to make up nonsense to illustrate the legitimate grievances of the affected Tamils in the North and East… working to lower the bar of truth instead of embracing the raising of it only serves to strengthen your considered enemy.

News Flash… The GoSL are only tolerated by most Governments because they appear to be the lesser of two considerable evils. There is a paucity of civil and decent leadership on both sides and fair-minded folks everywhere can see this easily.

Here is another thought for you.

There are many Journalists anxious to cover this war up close but neither side are interested… If the LTTE can smuggle weapons/people/supplies across Gov’t FDL’s they could easily bring in observers… they don’t because they can’t afford the truth to get out anymore than the Government can.

Many lies and many liars to go around in this conflict.

MISS INFORMATION,

LOOK WHAT HAPPEN WHEN OBSERVER TRIES SNEAK IN TO GET REPORT...

PLEASE SUGGEST SOMETHING THAT MAKE SENSE!!

"Although the government has issued statements saying that it will not injure civilians, I know how hollow they sound to those caught up in the fighting because I have encountered the Sri Lankan army.

Travelling to the north in 2001 to report on a humanitarian disaster that had engulfed 500,000 residents, I walked across a heavily fortified internal border that journalists had been forbidden to cross by the Colombo government.

Trying to return to a government-controlled area later, I walked at night past army bases lit by spotlights and ringed with barbed wire, following a Tamil route through waist-deep water and along jungle trails. When we were spotted, soldiers fired at us and lit flares. When I shouted I was a journalist, I was hit by shrapnel from a rocket-propelled grenade.

Although it is understandable that the soldiers that night were frightened that I might be a Tamil Tiger, they fired at me as I tried to stumble forward. When they saw me bloodied and barely able to stand, they beat me, stripped me and shoved me in and out of trucks despite the fact that I could barely breathe because of chest injuries from the blast and shrapnel in my head.

I was saved because I had access to help from The Sunday Times and diplomats, but the assurances from the Sri Lankan government will mean little to people in the northern Vanni area, who have endured indiscriminate bombing. The attack I survived was a mere footnote.

Yesterday the government said the Tamil Tigers were refusing to allow civilians to leave for safety, a claim the Tamil leadership denied. Tamil sources said a government offer that they should leave their homeland for areas under its control was unrealistic. “Not a single Tamil has slept in the last week,” said a Tamil source. “They do not want to seek refuge with their killers.”

Civilians removed in an evacuation have been placed in camps outside Vavuniya, the closest town to the conflict zone, which is off-limits to journalists. Injured civilians have been put in guarded hospitals. Tamils speaking from inside the conflict zone sounded desperate. “Civilians are trapped in an area 24 miles by 12. The Sri Lankan army are firing artillery and mortars from three fronts and the sea is on the other side,” said a Tamil spokesman.

“The army have asked people to go to specific areas and then they fire on them.”

Footage supplied by the rebels from Mullaitivu district appeared to confirm the claim. It showed people passing a naked, badly injured baby onto a lorry and doctors and nurses bandaging casualties.

“If the army overruns the forces of the LTTE, we will go back to guerrilla warfare. That will be on the head of the international community,” said a spokesman.

There was little sympathy from Colombo. “We are determined not to have a ceasefire and we are determined to eradicate terrorism in Sri Lanka,” said Mahinda Samarasinghe, the minister for human rights and disaster management.

Thurairajah Varatharajah, a senior health official in the Vanni district, said his hospital in Puthukudiyiruppu was overflowing with patients suffering shell blast injuries.

Britain called for an end to the fighting. “Military advances by the Sri Lankan government against the LTTE have come at a severe humanitarian cost,” said David Miliband, the foreign secretary.

Thousands of Tamils demonstrated in protest in central London yesterday.

Remember... it takes no more than blind ignorance to take an extremist view on the crisis in the Vanni but it takes reason, courage and humility to see the truth that invariably lies in between.

A.G.K,

I think we extensively discussed this disgraced Marie Colvin affair some times back in Defencenet or Defencewire.

About her lying.. there is a Court Order given by a NY court asking Marie Colvin to apologize about false reporting on Sri Lanka.

In addition, she cleverly twisted the events after her capture (in the dark) and got severely exposed. She went into hiding for many years after being ashamed after SL affair.

Now she has come back to the game thinking that we have forgotten her.

She is a shameless woman who tries to find her next meal through selling her soul. Please do some research about her in the Internet, mainly around 2001 if you would really want to learn about her.

["LTTE forcibly recruits UN staff member"]

So what? Everyone has to serve their country in times of war. Does the UN think because they have high paying UN jobs that they get special treatment? For years some people benefitted at the expense of the Tamil's sufferings through NGOs and UN projects. Now its time to pay your debt to your people.

khanthas said...

People including children are dying and getting badly injured in hundreds daily in Vanni. The UN has nothing to find except crying hypocritically for its staff member who they say abducted by Tigers. They don’t know the massacres going on in Vanni (nor in Rwanda) but they know precisely that their member has been abducted and by who. De Gaulle understood well the UN, he called it a “thing”…

I agree fully that if there were two states, there would not be any more fights. Look back couple of years ago, when Tamil Tigers had control of the land, that area had a proper government system and there was peace until the SLA invaded.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

I'm worried some of the defencewire regulars who are coming here out of boredom may get forcibly recruited by the LTTE to man the FDLs if they stay here too long. Better get the UN to evacuate them back to their native areas.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

It is a fact that the Sri Lankan army got destroyed in battles prior to the ceasefire. They were on the verge of defeat and very weak. The government went for a ceasefire with full intention to rebuild the army and again launch a war on the Tamils. Prabhakaran's mistake was to trust them and not finish them when he had them weakened.

FOUND SOME ARTICLE THAT SHOWS HER BRAVERY
..........
Maggie O'Kane (The Guardian)

Marie Colvin, of The Sunday Times, is one of those who stays around when it gets dangerous. I remember listening to her reports from inside the UN compound in East Timor, as the roughest of the rebels were circulating for the kill and the UN was preparing to pull out. Most of the media (there were three journalists who stayed behind in the compound - all women) had fled. In 24 hours, hundreds of journalists had gone, leaving the terrified refugees. But there was Marie Colvin. Steadfastly, calmly reporting on the terror of the women and children, as the UN prepared to abandon them. In the end - partly because of her reports - they didn't. She lost sight in one of her eyes in Sri Lanka and has travelled less in the past couple of years, but she is still the bravest woman I've met in the field.
...........................

Sunday Times journalist Marie Colvin cross in and out of rebel Tamil Tiger territory in April have been brought before a court for the first time since they were detained.

Miss Colvin was allowed to leave the country after she was badly injured by security forces while crossing the line on her way out of the rebel territory.

Many people in Sri Lanka were unhappy that the foreigner at the centre of this story was allowed to leave the country, while Sri Lankans accused of helping her have been languishing in detention.

A magistrate in the northern town of Vavuniya ordered the two suspects remanded in custody for a further six months while inquiries continue

Thousands of Tamils decry Sri Lankan 'genocide'

BRUSSELS (AFP) — Thousands of supporters of a Tamil state protested in Brussels Monday against "genocide" by the Sri Lankan government, urging the European Union to send observers to see the situation on the ground.

"The Sri Lankan soldiers are killing 50 Tamil every day, and that is just in the so-called 'protected areas'," said Siva Ram, a Tamil protester from Paris.

Organisers put the turnout at around 30,000 although police put the figure at 5,000.

"We want to tell the world and Europe to stop the genocide in Sri Lanka," said Suveetsan Sivapula, from Germany.

The noisy protest, organised by the Tamil Youth Organisation, took place 100 metres from where EU foreign ministers were meeting in Brussels' European quarter.

Last month, the ministers called for an immediate ceasefire between the Sri Lankan security forces and Tamil Tiger rebels to allow aid in to and civilians out of the conflict zone.

Sri Lankan government forces shot dead at least 32 Tamil Tiger rebels in north-eastern Sri Lanka, the defence ministry in Colombo said Sunday, as troops moved closer to finally defeating the separatist guerrillas.

Sri Lanka's army denies targeting the "safe zone" and in turn accuses the Tigers of fabricating reports of large scale civilian deaths.

The UN believes 150,000 to 180,000 civilians remain trapped in the territory still under rebel control.

"What we want is for the European Union to send people into the 'safe zone' and see what is really happening there, not just listen to what Colombo is telling them and visiting the displacement camps," said another Tamil protester who would not give his name.

The Tamil supporters also called for the Tamil Tigers to be taken off international terrorist lists.

"The Tamils are the Tigers, the Tigers are the Tamils," Sivapula said.

The committee, however, decided on certain other measures related to the issue Sunday, ignoring the recommendation of the Court, attendees of the meeting said. Meanwhile, the committee’s announcement that demining work in the said HSZ has begun is refuted by the District Coordinating Committee (DCC) in Jaffna District Secretariat, the sources added.

I am well aware of the inherent dangers of reporting in Sri Lanka. The GoSL is an oppressive regime that has demonstrated a penchant for at best suppressing news it disfavours and at worst has likely had a hand in the deaths of journalists that do not adhere to its 'party line'.

However the same has certainly been true of the LTTE. I say this from my time in LTTE held territory in 2005.

Again, please give me evidence that an independent journalist has been offered, let alone given, a chance to report from LTTE held territory. Walter Cronkite helped turn the tide of American public opinion on the Vietnam war when he saw first hand the ground realities... why doesn't the LTTE take advantage of the truth?

... because they are afraid of it, just like the GoSL is afraid of the truth.

Merely using bold capped and unrelated stories does not make your argument nor does it counter my point.

I suspect you are another poster who has no recent or relevant experience anywhere near the conflict zone... typical of these types of blogs.

The Tamil cause is better served by the truth, warts and all, and it grieves me that the people involved in this human tragedy refuse to embrace its unstoppable power.

Oh yes... who are you to suggest that someone who disagrees with you is a traitor? That sounds just like the repressive GoSL minions who refuse to listen to the many voices in the South who are ashamed of the way the GoSL have trampled the constitution and the rights of every citizen.

The European Union appealed Monday to Sri Lankan authorities and Tamil Tiger rebels to agree to an immediate cease-fire to allow urgent humanitarian aid into a northern "safe zone" where civilians are supposed to be shielded from the fighting.

Benita Ferrero-Waldner, the EU's external relations commissioner said the situation for civilians there is "very dangerous."

"Approximately 170,000 people ... are being trapped in the northern part of Sri Lanka and neither the Sri Lanka government or the LTTE (rebels) has until now accepted our appeal," she told reporters.

TAMILNET REPORTED EARLIER THAT TIGERS HAD WELCOMED THE CEASE FIRE PROPOSAL FROM EU...WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH EU.. THEY STILL DENY IT..

She said the EU would send a diplomatic mission to the country soon to push the EU cease-fire appeal.

Toronto - The city's Tamil community and their supporters staged a major demonstration downtown, Monday, protesting the violent attacks by the Sri Lankan military on Tamils in that country's civil war.

Thousands of protestors are expected to block Yonge and University streets for up to five hours, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., which could cause major traffic problems for commuters.

Police are expecting up to 30,000 people to take part in the protest -- forming a human chain on Yonge at Front Street, north on Yonge to Bloor Street, west to University Avenue and then south again to Front.

A similar demonstration in January of this year drew 45,000 people. The GTA is home to 200,000 Tamils.

For the past 26 years, the civil war has ravaged Sri Lanka. According to the United Nations, an estimated 70,000 thousand people have been killed.

The battle is over independence, as Tamils, who are mostly situated in the north part of the country, are fighting for their own separate state, while the Sinhalese majority and their government oppose the movement.

No... what is strange is that you repeatedly fail to comprehend my point. I am talking about reporting from LTTE territory now... not seven or eight years ago.

If the LTTE wanted to have independent reporting from their territory they could arrange it... these are the same folks who can import airplanes, munitions and sophisticated communications technology. They either choose not to do so for fear of the truth or because they really are on the verge of military defeat and cannot arrange something as simple as one or two people being smuggled into their areas of control. You can't have it both ways.

I realise many folks are bound to extremist positions but surely even you can see the advantages of the LTTE getting the true story out... unless they are like the GoSL and are afraid of the truth.

Compare the cost of a hundred tons of grain with a few precision guided missiles... the GoSL has plenty of money for its bloated Cabinet and the comforts of its closest supporters so it should, for no other reason than propaganda, be supplying first-rate food, medicine and accommodations for the very people it claims to be liberating.

You are wrong as usual. How can you possibly speak to the intentions of thousands of reporters around the globe. Please, you do poor service to the cause with this specious nonsense.

The history of journalism is filled with stories told from terrible places by folks who were not concerned with returning to a country let alone their own safety. Are you saying there are no Tamil journalists who would risk their lives to get the truth out?

And yes... you can be a Tamil journalist, be fair and balanced in your reporting and not be either a traitor or a GoSL stooge. Perhaps if you ever get to travel outside of the GTA you might one day meet the kind of reporters who would be happy to bring the news of this conflict to the world.

["Are you saying there are no Tamil journalists who would risk their lives to get the truth out?"]

Tamil journalists are already there reporting, and they naturally report to Tamilnet, puthinam, sankathi, etc., which automatically gets them labeled as biased.

If you have problem understanding the meaning of "foreign journalist" then I can't help you with that. Despite your boring lecture about the noble journalists in the world, the fact is there are no foreign journalists in the world right now willing to give up their lives for the Tamil cause. You can imagine that there are some, but facts are different.

"Feedback from readers after the publication of this feature points out that the camera used for the photograph as evidenced by meta data was Sony DSC-T2. Sony advertised this model in October 2007 saying that it would be available to the market in December 2007. The deduction of the readers who sent the feedback was that the camera by default was showing the timestamp set when it was manufactured. The camera came to market in December 2007 couldn't have taken a picture dated to September 2007 as seen in the concerned photograph. This is a proof, the readers point out, that the concerned camera was not set to show date and time ever since it was purchased. "
