One LTTE gunman pins down 50 Sri Lankan special commandos

By Balakumar Anjaneyan

This video is a few weeks old, but it shows how clueless the Sri Lankan special commandos are. Here a single LTTE gunman pins down around 50 commandos on the beach at Chalai. In developed countries, the military is trained to storm the enemy's sniper position, but in Sri Lanka these commandos just try to hide. One even tries to dig a hole into the sand to hide like an ostrich. How humiliating for him to be caught on tape doing this. Note how no one has any idea what to do as they are being fired on. They neither try to get out of the line of fire, nor do they try to neutralize the attacker. They just lay there in the sun like idiots.

I am no longer able to communicate with anyone in the area, so will not be able to give any meaningful updates.

To me it looks like they will try to hold the land behind the lagoon. The entire area is surrounded by water, so once the bridges are blown out it will be difficult for the Sri Lankan government to cross and enter the no fire zone.

Many LTTE fighters have already infiltrated to various areas. I expect hit and run attacks behind enemy lines while the main army is held across the lagoon.

I think they will try as long as its physically possible. But at some point, which may be weeks or months, I think they may have to leave the coast completely. Rajapaksa is willing to lose any number of soldiers, and likewise any number of Tamil civilians, so I don't know how long they can resist in a stationary manner. They will probably wait a little longer to see whether the international community steps in. If not then they either have to relocate or fight till the end. I hope they don't choose the later. Even though it would have a tremendous impact on the Tamils throughout the world, it is hard to imagine a freedom struggle without all of the heroes who led it.

I've seen a video in either muhamalai or chalai where like 30 sla are trying to cross over a sand bund and the keep peeping over the bund and then running back. Arti support is what gets them across these Tiger FDLs otherwise these pussies can't do shit. One guy tosses like 5 hand grenades before peeping over the bund. sla has no bravery or guile, just sheer firepower. In a wide and expanse area, firepower works magic in driving back an opponent. However, in a place as small as PTK, arti and airforce accounts for very little as you are setting up your own forces to your long range pussy strikes.

Thats why the sla is now wavering after rapidly 'capturing' major land masses, they cant seem to capture an area that is manned by only 200 Tigers since like 43724 died in a thwarted infiltration.

Epic fail. stinkalam is a failed state. sla is a failed army. stinkala is a failed race.

"These pictures show clearly that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is using the civilians in its territory as human shields. Among the civilian dwellings, bunkers, operations room, vehicles etc could be identified. This LTTE ploy has drastically slowed down the military thrust on the remaining separatist-held areas. If the government forces fire artillery or mortars on the Tiger positions, the LTTE can easily blame the military for shelling civilian dwellings."

Can't blame LTTE! After all 'Sole Representatives' should live among its' people, right??

Badrinath, the LTTE media should stop calling the AIFV or APC, Aroumered Infantry Fighting vehicle or Armoured Personnel Carriers as tanks. Both have different functions. AIFV bring personnel in the battle front (front line) and give good fire support with either a GPMG or with a small turret. Generally 40mm rounds. Normarly all AIFVs carry a spare GPMG barrell like the GPMG gunners.

Now the LTTE uses the AIFV more as frontline armour plated fire support. Well its precious captured cargo. Hence mobilising them in an armed formation would be effective but costly. Alot of people have commented on the white smoke. Normally its a problem with the filter or the diesel used.

AI or Armour Infantry are usually better trained as their close to commandos when been thrown into the heat of the battle. Defencewire has tried with the army propaganda machine to fool the public about the trench system employed by the LTTE. However he never fails to higlight that the armoured brigade is always held in reserve. Held in reserve simply because use of them would be disaterous.

Hence the trench system produced and unprecedented slaughter of SLA as the delaying action cause huge scarifices on their part. Now the LTTE realised that the SLA was willing to scarifice as many as their men as required to achieve mahindha mamas war push. Hence they changed their tactics.

Now the sad part with an IMF bailout is that their armed forces which is too bloated and balloned will have to be reduced drastically. Hence the desperation on many fronts for the Sri Lankan government.

A daydream of central banker who is a gem for the infdepedence cause is that neither is he qualified or capable to hold such a post. Hence if you are helping a friend who needs money will you not tell him to change his spending habit. However as Defencewire spins stories, so does the central banker. He says no strings attached for the money. I mean he thinks its sri lanka giving money to all their cronies and if more is needed, they would just print it.

Sri Lanka is under full collapse. I may not agree with what the LTTE is doing to achieve independence but it can be pondered on once its achieved. This will happen soon.

“In my view, the LTTE has about 20% support among the Tamil people but this can only be tested if LTTE contests the election. The LTTE has unnecessarily gone about imposing this position that it is the sole representative of the Tamil people and in the process of establishing this hegemony it has engaged in all sorts of artificial and fascist exercises and imposed itself to show that the Tamil people are overwhelmingly behind it.”

So that’s what M.I.A.’s father has to say and he certainly is well informed wouldn’t you agree?

It is time for Tamils of Sri Lanka to find viable new leadership, as there is no useful leadership now. The LTTE are presently reduced to a diminished fighting force with few options and are in very little position to help the remaining civilians in their “care”.

The entire issue is more than one man and that man needs to go and go fast.

Ceasefire now.

The GoSL also needs to show some testicular fortitude and find common ground for a stand-down before any more innocents die.

Pro-government web site caught trying to tarnish credibility of tamilnet.com.

An article published in the defencenet claims that the health ministry letters published in the tamilnet website are all doctored. The only “proof” defencenet finds is there are drastic spelling errors in the singala words in these letters. (One misspelled word in the government letter means a profanity)

After careful study of the health ministry’s original letterheads we can conclude that all these misspellings (including the profanity) are actually present in the original letterheads which have been used for the past so many years. Until now nobody in the GOSL has noticed it (not surprisingly).

We, the "Bhairav team" deplores this cheap detective work of the defence net team.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — A lack of medical supplies has led to the needless deaths of hundreds of hospital patients in parts of northern Sri Lanka ravaged by civil war, the regions' top health officials said.

The international Red Cross said conditions for civilians were "deteriorating by the day," and the U.N. Children's Fund said thousands of children were at risk because of "a critical lack of food, water and medicines."

In a letter to the Health Ministry, officials from two northern Sri Lankan regions said just 5 percent of the needed drugs and dressings were received in the last quarter of 2008 and the first part of this year.

The letter, seen Tuesday by The Associated Press, was signed by the health officers of Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu. Kilinochchi was the headquarters of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam until it was overrun by government troops in early January.

The last remaining remnants of the rebels are fighting in Mullaitivu to hold on to a shrinking swath of land — estimated at 13.5 square miles (35 square kilometers) — on the northeast coast.

The letter said more than 500 patients died since January after arriving at hospitals and that thousands of others may have died outside of hospitals.

"Most of the hospital deaths could have been prevented if basic infrastructure facilities and essential medicines were made available," it said.

On Tuesday, a further 23 patients died out of 108 wounded civilians taken to a makeshift hospital in the northeast, said Kandasamy Tharmakulasingham, a hospital administrative officer.

Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said any letter coming out of the rebel territory is "suspicious and subject to verification." He declined further response until he could consult senior health officials.

The U.N. says 150,000 to 180,000 civilians, displaced from Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu, are trapped in the war zone. The government says the figure is much lower, and on Tuesday the Sri Lankan president told the U.N. chief Tamil rebels are holding the civilians by force.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, in a phone conversation with President Mahinda Rajapaksa, asked about food, medicine and essential supplies in the country's northern war zone, as well as civilians' safety and facilities for displaced people, the president's office said.

Rajapaksa said the military has been instructed not to fire heavy weapons at civlian areas and that the government regularly sends food to the battle zones, the statement added.

The U.N. Children's Fund said hundreds of children have been killed as a result of the conflict.

"Thousands are now at risk because of a critical lack of food, water and medicines," agency executive director Ann M. Veneman said in a statement. "Regular, safe access for humanitarian agencies is urgently required, so that lifesaving supplies can be provided."

In Geneva, Simon Schorno, a spokeman for the International Committee of the Red Cross, said there has been shelling of a coastal area designated as a "safe zone" for the largely Tamil civilian population.

U.N. estimates 2,800 civilians have died since late January; the government says that figure is unsubstantiated.

The government has rejected numerous appeals — the latest from the European Union — for an immediate cease-fire, saying any deal would allow the besieged rebels to regroup.

The Tamil Tigers have began fighting since 1983 for an independent state for the Tamil minority, which suffered decades of marginalization at the hands of governments dominated by the Sinhalese majority. More than 70,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

FURTHER PROOF OF GENOCIDE...BY SL GOV..

UNITED NATIONS (AFP) — The Sri Lanka conflict has killed hundreds of children and left many more injured, the head of the UN children's agency UNICEF said Tuesday, warning of a critical lack of food, water and medicines.

"Children and their families caught in the conflict zone are at risk of dying from disease and malnutrition," said UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman in a statement.

"Regular, safe access for humanitarian agencies is urgently required, so that life-saving supplies can be provided, and civilians must be allowed to move to safe areas where essential humanitarian support is more readily available," she added.

"The rights of children caught in the conflict must be fully respected and every effort should be taken to prevent civilian casualties," Veneman noted.

In Colombo, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also warned Tuesday that the humanitarian situation was deteriorating quickly as civilians still living in the rebel-held territory endured daily attacks and an increased danger of epidemics.

"The area is affected by shelling every day, and the cramped conditions and the lack of water and proper sanitation are putting people at risk," it said in a statement.

The Sri Lankan government estimates that 70,000 civilians are trapped in the island's northeast along with around 500 Tamil Tiger fighters.

The United Nations says the number of non-combatants could be about 200,000.

The Sri Lankan military has surrounded Tamil Tiger separatist guerrillas in a small patch of jungle and hopes to wipe out the rebels last fighters within weeks

Colombo: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has telephoned President Mahinda Rajapaksa to discuss the plight of civilians in northern Sri Lanka ravaged by civil war.

The modus operandi of the widespread abductions and disappearances we witness in Sri Lanka today is similar to what we saw in the late 1980s and early 1990s. President Rajapakse, who was a Member of Parliament then, was in the forefront of the struggle against these incidents. Now his regime has become one of the world’s worst perpetrators of enforced disappearances. Members of the security forces, police and pro-government groups are alleged to be involved in these incidents.

The government has demonstrated an utter lack of resolve to inquire and investigate into these incidents. It downplays the problem, denying the scale of the incidents and blaming unknown persons for them. It is being said that since the government is in the midst of a war, it did not want to demoralize the soldiers by investigating into incidents of this nature. Consequently these incidents continue with impunity often at, near or between security check points, or during curfew hours in the North, leaving no doubt as to who the perpetrators are. Some persons so abducted had been later found in detention centres or in police custody. Others remain disappeared.

Lawyers and other human rights defenders who assist victims are branded as traitors or otherwise penalised. Even UN officials and Parliamentarians who espouse their cause have been named as supporters of the LTTE.

Sri Lanka is unique in that virtually all the major parties represented in parliament, have at some stage or the other, been collaborators or perpetrators of disappearances. None of these parties seriously want to deal with the perpetrators or put an end to this sordid practice. Successive governments appear to have found causing the disappearances of individuals who oppose them or who could pose a threat to the government in power, a convenient tool in their hands. It is therefore no wonder that none of these political parties are serious in putting an end to disappearances or punishing perpetrators. Consequently, the families of the victims of disappearances have no one to look up to.

In the circumstances there is an urgent need to take immediate measures to ensure that speedy and effective remedial action is taken against those who commit these acts with impunity. Despite recommendations from all the previous Presidential Commissions of Inquiry into Disappearances, the causing of a disappearance of a person is still not an offence in the Penal Code. Besides, no steps have been taken to ratify the Convention on Disappearances of Persons though Sri Lanka was one of the countries that proposed such a Convention, initially.

The primary responsibility of any state is to maintain law and order in the country. But the government in Sri Lanka is a dumb witness to widespread abductions, torture, extra-judicial killings and disappearances of persons taking place systematically. The judiciary is unable to play its role in checking the occurrence of these incidents. The Emergency Regulations provide legitimacy to some of the incidents through allowing the disposal of bodies without inquiry and so on. The National Human Rights Commission is not in a position to check these incidents due to inherent flaws in the Law that created it and the political nature of the appointment of its members. The government has not taken any meaningful steps to deal with the perpetrators of disappearances in the past identified by previous Presidential Commissions of Inquiry into Disappearances. These led to Sri Lanka being ousted from membership of the UN Human Rights Council last year. Yet these incidents continue. The wide call for an international monitoring mission to curb such incidents has been staunchly resisted by the Government, confirming its lack of commitment to stop this scourge. In fact the International Independent Group of Eminent Persons invited by the Government in 2007 to observe the proceedings of a Presidential Commission of Inquiry into Serious Human Rights Violations, aborted their activities in 2008 stating, inter alia, because the government lacks the will and the desire to follow human rights norms during the inquiries.

All that is left now is for the international community to do is to take cognizance of all these factors and treat Sri Lanka as a failing state as many allege it to be; unable or unwilling to stop disappearances. That may perhaps make the government take steps to improve the human rights situation and end disappearances of persons in the country.

[[
The pyrrhic victory army's Fonseka – joined by hiss colleagues in the Air-force and Navy - is likely to deliver has, on the other hand, resulted in the more undesirable feature in bringing to its knees the economic health of the 20 million nation – now in the throes of a rocketing Cost of Living now in the stratosphere; mass unemployment by the closure of garment, manufacturing factories and trading companies; an imminent flow-back of thousands of Lankan workers in the Gulf that brought in an appreciable portion of our annual foreign-exchange earnings; collapse of the stock-market; confusion in the tea, rubber and cinnamon market - just to name a few. In fairness to him it may be added here Rajapakse did not begin the down-slide with the armed adventure Vs the LTTE. The unenviable credit to this must go to his predecessor CBK, now in splendid retirement with spoils all hither, thither and yon. Even fresh fish, caught locally for as long as one can remember, has to be imported to keep spiralling prices down in an island surrounded by marine-rich oceans “ but for how long?

The culprit for the economic collapse is widely believed to be Mahinda's "Economic Czar" and his personal choice as Central Bank Governor - Ajith Nivaard Cabraal, whom the Colombo business community did not accept any more than as an average Accountant with hardly any achievement of significant note to write home about. His only qualification appears to be he is more than willing to be an 'yes' man to the President and the more vocal in the ruling clique – a PhD equivalent that seems to impress many political heads in many developing countries than the hard-headed stuff of learned economists from Harvard, Wharton and the OxCam league. Even senior economists and administrators the government consulted prior to Cabraal's appointment were either vocally against the appointment or, being polite to the President, remained lukewarm. Rajapakse failed to take notice of the advise and the hint – and now finds himself feeling the full heat of the baptism of fire.

Of Cabraal's celebrated guffaws the more serious ones are his brushing aside the inevitable dire affects to the country of the burgeoning global recession – "this will not have much of an affect on uusâ" quoth this economic giant contemptuously. And more recently, his arrogant dismissal of the IMF betrays the lack of academic depth. He has now made Rajapakse eat humble pie with the high priests of the IMF - forcing the latter to seek an embarrassing bail-out close to US$2 billion - the only oxygen in the horizon to the collapsing economy. Cabraal's assurance to Rajapakse the Sinhala diaspora will instantly come out with US$500 million lies in shatters – and predictably so. Even the now nondescript UNP annd its lacklustre leader Ranil Wickramasinghe are in stitches laughing uncontrolably at the government's imposed vulnerability.

The Shylockish IMF is unlikely to open her purse strings easily and without laying bitter conditions. Cabraal may not tell his boss that the "caning" from the IMF for (Cabraal's) "perali" will have much to do with "ill-advised excessive and un-necessary purchase of arms and costly equipment" to all three forces in the overkill pursuit of an enemy numbering less than a few thousands - Fonseka's figures. IMF will naturally expect economic advisors of the government to preach wisdom, discipline and caution to weak governments in the clutches of uniformed men and clerics. But then was it not that unforgettable Irishman Oscar Wilde who remarked "those who cannot learn now take to teaching"?

But this is only the beginning of Rajapakse's litany of woes. Closer at hand, India has called out a General Election for mid-April where the two major political entities – the Coalitions around the Congress under Sonia and that under the Hindu-rightist BJP – are going all-out to win. Tamilnadu with 39 Lok Sabha seats will be a prized ally of both the Congress and the BJP. The far-right Narendra Modi sweeping Gujarat in the recent State Elections there – against a hostile Press and electronic as the partissan "NDTV" – could well mean the Indian electorate will oscillate this time towards the BJP.

It is only but an imbecile who will claim ignorance as to what this can mean to a Sinhala government arguably imposing injustice on their Tamils for decades. Knowing all too well which side of the bread is buttered that fiery "Amma" Jeyaram Jayalalitha is not going to be too far away from the Lankan Tamil question, from which she kept herself aloof all these years.

She has caused a tremendous shift in the balance of power of Tamilnadu politics by openly coming out in favour of "Separate State" for the Lankan Tamils. It shall not be long before Kalaignar joins in the fray - possibly with a wilder pronouncement. It will be only the political naive within the government and its coterie of "advisors" who will fail to take note of this significant change in TN politics.

This is probably why Dayan Jayatilake, the controversial trouble-shooter of the regime in Geneva, now down-sized, titled his latest peace "Are we being encircled globally just as we have encircled the Tigers locally." Despite his faults Jayatilake, son of an illustrious journalist giant, knows what's going on in the world though compulsions of necessity result in some twists and turns. It is easy to dupe the Lankans by claiming Hillary Clinton only called President Rajapakse "to express her condolences to the Matara carnage" That was only "starters" although the local media was "instructed by Temple Trees to twist it so. International Herald Tribune was one of the major dailies to report "Hillary Clinton called Rajapakse to warn him to make sure his Army keeps Wanni civilian casualties to the minimum from now on" Spokesmen of the UK, Germany, E/U governments had similar messages consistent with the report of the IHT. Some are yet to learn Goebellism died in Germany with the man during WW2.

More importantly and from close proximity, New Delhi used similar language in her communiqu. An unusually larger number of US Senators both Democrat and Republican (38 to be exact), MP's from both sides of the British House of Commons, the EU Parliament, UN's High Commissioner of Human Rights the South African Ms Navanitham Pillai proceeded to do what was expected of them. While some held hearings others sent in their own messages "expressing grave concern" in the increasing number of civilian casualties by the army. The world remembers the massacre of the 5 youth in Trincomalee and the execution of over a dozen relief-workers under the flag of a French NGO - where the role of the army was clearly visible.

Although Sri Lanka treats them lightly now, the International Group of Eminent Persons are held in high esteem everywhere - if one only cares to look at the list of these experienced academics. They certainly carry much punch with several governments. The damage-control efforts of the Lankan variety of a Goebellesian reincarnation - Dr Rajiva Wijesinghe of the Lankan Peace Secretariat – too failed although, he duly, as expected of him, fired salvo after salvo on anyone criticizing his "boss" and the charmed regime. The undue delay in the army mopping off the few remaining LTTE cadres within the 35+ sq. kilo meters a minor job for any army worth its salt – is being commented upon by our Donors.

After all, they ask, "how come 40,000 of your well-armed troops are unable to cage in a rag-tag group of a few thousand LTTE?". Shankar Menon's most recent visit to Washington and his meeting with Secretary Clinton and other high ranking officials where the "Sri Lankan issue" took centre stage caused much consternation in Colombo. The subsequent report that the US Naval Fleet anchored in the Gulf is considering a sea-borne mission (invasion is too sensitive a word for the regime and the patriots) "to save the trapped Wanni civilians" sent shivers down the spine of Temple Trees and the Sinhala supremacist-chauvinist fringe admitted by the regime as "holding the Rajapakse government as prisoners".

The worst fear must be the haunting spectre of some of the leaders in the Rajapakse government - notably Gothabaya, Basil Rajapakse and Sarath Fonseka - with US Citizenship credentials –“ being tainted with abominable "War crime" and genocide charges. The safe thought China, a member of the UN Security Council, will use her Vetoe powers to strike downany move to have any of China" friends or allies getting into hot waters has to be reviewed in the light of the fate of President Bashir of Sudan, whose resources and friendship is far more important to energy-hungry China than Sri Lanka. Bashir could not be saved from indictment before the International Court of Criminal Justice.

If one read through the BBC interview in which Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe was confronted with by Hard Talk" (BBC) Stephen Sachur and the statement of Chairman of the Foreign Relations Sub-Committee on Near and Far Eastern Affairs Senator Bob Casey the similarity in approach by both came out. Both usedin their addresses the immature and prejudicial quotes of Defence Secretary Rajapakse "Who is Lasantha?" ""Anyone not agreeing with us is committing treason" "Civilian Hospitals in the Wanni are legitimate targets of the armed forces" Too bad this un-diplomatic man with little culture or knowledge of the ways of the world is allowed to create further trouble to his brother. Clearly there appears to be some form of convergence of thoughts in the approach to the Lankan issue by several influential countries in different parts of the world.

And to make matters worse, the latest threat of that political parvenu and wind-bag Wimal Weerawansa two days ago "he will get his goons from his Front to surround the UN Office" in Colombo can only bring further trouble to Mahinda Rajapakse as further evidence of his being unable to leash extremist and dangerous forces within his fold. This kind of "mariakade" language appears to be the stock-in-trade of many of President Rajapakse's "friends" within his fold such as the likes of his attack animal Dr. Mervyn who is behind many incredible acts of violence – Sri Lanka's own version of Slumdog millioanaire.

Though it might have results within Sri Lanka and particularly in intimidating innocent Tamils in the wider, such ghastly behaviour is treated with utter contempt in civilized countries. As another columnist recently concluded "Rajapakse appears to be in the process of ending what SWRD Banda started in 1956 and which Prabakaran effectively carried out in the post-1983 period. That is to say, dividing the country into two Sinhala-Tamil geographical and linguistic units"

JVP fears Indian hospital would be a threat

The establishment of an Indian Army mobile hospital in Pulmuoddai will be a threat to the Sovereignty, Iand National Security of Sri Lanka, JVP parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told Parliament yesterday.

In a special statement he demanded that the government should reveal on what grounds it had allowed the Indian Army’s Medical Cadres to set up a mobile military hospital.

The establishment of an Indian military hospital in the East would create many unnecessary problems, he said. A group of 52 Indian military medical personnel arrived in Sri Lanka on March 11 to set up a mobile Army hospital in Pulmoddai. The aim of the new hospital, according to media reports, was to assist those displaced by the ongoing operations in the North, he said.

If the Indian government was giving friendly assistance why did they select military personnel, the JVP MP queried.

This will create an impression that the Sri Lanka government is not in a position to provide for the people of the North, and the Western nations will get a wrong message, he said.

There are medical units in the three security forces of Sri Lanka and they have been deployed amply in North and the East, MP Dissanayake said.

These medical units of the tri-forces were in operation since the day the war broke with the LTTE and up to now there had been no complaints against their service or qualifications.

In this context allowing the Indian government to send their military personnel here was unnecessary, the JVP MP said.

He askedwhether the government was not able to provide required health and medical facilities for the displaced persons in the North. Have the Lankan medical personnel and doctors refused to work in those areas, he asked.

MP Dissanayake also asked whether the Lankan government made any requests to the Indian government to come and set up mobile hospitals here, or was the initiative to set up the hospital taken by the Indian government.

He said the Pulmoddai area had many mineral deposits and was important in security and military sense. Setting up a hospital by a foreign army in such a place would definitely create so many threats against Sri Lanka’ssovereignty, independence and national security of the country, he said.

March 18 (Bloomberg) -- Sri Lanka’s central bank lowered interest rates for the third time in three months to protect the island’s economy from the global recession.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka cut the penal interest rate to 14.75 percent from 16.5 percent, according to a statement posted on the bank’s Web site today. The repurchase rate was kept unchanged at 10.25 percent and the reverse repurchase rate was maintained at 11.75 percent.

Further cuts in interest rates will depend on the conditions the International Monetary Fund imposes on Sri Lanka in return for an emergency loan sought by the country to make payments for imports and debt. Pakistan, for example, was directed last year by the Washington-based lender to raise rates if its foreign-exchange reserves fall below a monthly floor.

“The direction of interest rates in Sri Lanka is now a bit uncertain after the IMF has come into play,” said D. H. Pai Panandiker, president of the RPG Foundation, an economic policy group in New Delhi.

The central bank said today that steps taken so far will help “promote demand and support economic activity.”

Sri Lanka’s statistics department is due to announce fourth-quarter gross domestic product figures at 11:30 a.m. today in Colombo.

Sri Lanka said March 4 it is in talks with the IMF for a $1.9 billion loan to repay debt and rebuild the country as a 26- year civil war draws to a close.

IMF Bailout

Since August, the South Asian nation has spent half its foreign reserves, now $1.7 billion, on supporting its currency, paying debt and imports. It needs another $900 million for loan repayments in 2009. The reserves aren’t getting replenished as the ailing world economy pummels exports and overseas investors flee emerging markets.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government turned to the IMF for a bailout, avoiding devaluation of the nation’s currency, to conserve reserves. Securing financing from other countries was challenging for the nation, which has a credit rating from Standard & Poor’s that is only higher than Bolivia, Pakistan, Grenada, Argentina and Lebanon. Fitch Ratings downgraded its outlook on Sri Lanka last month.

Governor Nivard Cabraal began easing borrowing costs in the economy from November, taking advantage of dropping commodity prices. Consumer prices in the capital Colombo rose 7.6 percent in February from a year earlier, the lowest in three years.

Mullattive: Dozens of civilians, detained by Tiger in the “No Fire Zone” in PUTUMATALAN, PUTHUKKUDIYIRUPPU were reportedly either feared killed or seriously wounded Tuesday (17) after one densely concentrated civilian gathering area in the Zone was indiscriminately fired upon by irate Tiger gunmen over a heated argument that ensued, following a shoot-out at two fleeing civilians within the Zone earlier in the day, Army troops serving outside have been told.

The entire affected area plunged into a utter chaos and confusion within minutes as Tiger “Policemen” in the aftermath of the attack on two elderly civilians stormed the location, in order to suppress the ensuing public protest and the heated brawl that broke out as a result of the murder of those civilians, detained under them.

As the mammoth concentration of civilians swelled and turned unruly over the murders, Tiger “Policemen”, unable to bring the situation under control, have summoned armed Tiger carders, engaged in fighting against government troop in the close vicinity.

Reports confirmed furious Tiger gunmen rushed to the area afterwards and went on a shooting-spree aiming at those noisy moths who were still protesting and demanding the exit from the LTTE grip as the area cannot be further controlled due to rising public opposition and revulsion.

Ground sources claimed at least a few dozens of agitating displaced civilians were feared killed or badly injured when those Tiger gunmen indiscriminately strayed bullets into mobs who had turned violent after the murder of civilians.

Tiger gunmen in their remaining vehicles while guarding those restless and noisy civilians have who reportedly gone on surrounding them and firing at them indiscriminately in order to quell the mob-rioting in the “No Fire Zone”.

In the melee, a total of 1565 displaced civilians, some of who were also subjected to LTTE atrocities and gunfire have managed to run for life and ended in areas, controlled by government troops, the latest report said Tuesday (17) late evening.

JAFFNA: OVER 250-300 fishing boats with outboard motors (OBM), 200 Theppam and Vallam (locally made boats), regularly, used by some 1800 fisher-folk enter the JAFFNA lagoon for fishing business on all six days of the week, except on Sundays, JAFFNA Fishermen’s Association authorities confirmed to the troops.

Security Forces after the recent fall of POONERYN into Army hands further relaxed and expanded fishing hours by accommodating 15 HP boats with outboard motors. Fishermen are allowed to do fishing between 5.00 a.m.-5.00 p.m. in the JAFFNA lagoon.

JAFFNA Security Forces after the re-opening of the A-9 highway for traffic are now seriously considering possibilities of further relaxing those fishing hours, as normalcy returns to the entire highway road areas.

As recent as last week, JAFFNA fishermen were able to sell some 4500 kg of crabs and prawns to be taken to COLOMBO along the A-9 highway.

Let's talk in ratio here. 1 LTTE for 50 SLA's. That's how talented the LTTE are. It's actually a fluke how the SLA's got much of their land. To be honesty, I really think SLA's need to be more focused on training than to shell innocent tamils. I mean, if 50 SLA can't annihilate 1 LTTE, then how many of those sand crawling dug hiding SLA cockroaches do you need? The war has been going this long due to the lack of tactics and talents of the SLA's. The LTTE has nice battle techniques and tactics that the world admires, and we all know that.

Who ever wants to argue with me or quote me and insult me, can gladly do so; cauz bitch, i got one thing to say: No matter what, you guys can't even come close to beating LTTE, maybe in one of those wet dreams that all of you tiny cocksucking SLA's have. This video proves the stupidity of SLA's and their so called defence line.

So this is my proposal; since the LTTE fighters are supposedly outnumber by useless army of SLAs, I think the best way to achieve this would be for all the LTTE's to crawl on the ground and dig some space underground and hope that no one finds them.

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAAAHAHAHAH. PERIOD.

COLOMBO - A media rights group on Wednesday urged the United Nations to intervene on behalf of two Sri Lankan journalists being held on charges related to the war against the separatist Tamil Tiger guerrillas.

The Paris-based Reporters Without Borders (RSF) said J.S. Tissainayagam has been held under an anti-terrorism law for more than a year for writing about civilians caught in fighting between troops and Tiger rebels.

Nadesapillai Vidyatharan, who edits the Tamil daily Sudar Oli, has been detained since February 26 over suspected links with the rebel fighters, the RSF said.

Vidyatharan's newspaper has been staunchly critical of the military campaign against the Tigers, who are cornered in the northeast of the island.

According to official figures, nine journalists have been killed in Sri Lanka in the past three years, including Lasantha Wickrematunga, editor of the Sunday Leader, who was shot by unknown gunmen in January as he drove to work.

His newspaper was fiercely critical of government policy.

Young cricketers in Jaffna attend one of Aravinda de Silva's coaching sessions
The young players of Jaffna 'showed talent and commitment'

A former top Sri Lankan cricketer has launched what he says is the first training camp to integrate young Tamils from the north into the national team.

Aravinda de Silva said he was highly optimistic that Tamils from the area would play international cricket soon.

He spoke to the BBC after returning to Colombo from a "talent search" in the war-torn Jaffna Peninsula.

The civil war and ethnic divisions have meant that few northern Tamils have played in the national side.

'Extremely positive'

"The keenness of the players was unbelievable," Mr de Silva told the BBC's Sinhala service.

Young cricketers in Jaffna
Mr de Silva thinks some players will break through into the national team

"We spent three days coaching about 70 teenage players and seven of those have now been selected to come for a super camp which will be held later on in the year."

Mr de Silva - a former top test batsman - said that the players responded to the training camp - held amid heavy security - "extremely positively" and many out-performed their contemporaries in other parts of the country less seriously affected by the war.

"The way they took the sessions so seriously and the way they kept on asking questions reflected really well on them all," he said. "It never happened on any of the previous eight camps we held.

"One observant young player even asked if the reason why I have one leg more muscular than the other was because I am a right-handed batsman and put more weight on one particular leg."

Mr de Silva said that one of the best prospects to be discovered at the camp was a young pace bowler who he expects to be selected to represent Sri Lanka in the next under-19 World Cup.

Mr de Silva is one of Sri Lanka's best known cricketers. He was named as Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1996 and retired from international circlet after playing in the 2003 World Cup. He finished his career with 15,000 first class runs.

I am a bit suprised by what you actually say badri. I do not think the LTTE needs to leave its environs. Firstly many nooses are going round sri lanka's neck. All are starting to tighten. The beauty is mahidha should learn that beggars cannot be choosers.

Without pay many soldiers will abandon their positions and return home. If forced to fight they will turn their guns on their superiors. Its a difference when you join a fight for the money and when you join to liberate yourself and your people.

Its a pity that like the Nazisin their desire to annihlate the jews, they diverted resources from the frontline to killing jews. Yet the real battle today for sri lanka is her economy. However what it seems to be only sucessful for mahindha mama is the war. It itself is turning around and becoming a stranglehold on him.

Asian Tribune itself now says that the LTTE parays for the BJP to come to power. Its certain to and most probabily with TDP and AIADMK who are going to leave the third front after the elections.

PREVENTABLE DEATHS

Hundreds of deaths due to wounds and serious diseases could have been prevented if more medical supplies and facilities were made available, the top government medical officials inside the war zone said in a letter to the health ministry.

The regional health directors for the Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts have been forced to move their facilities across northern Sri Lanka as the Tigers made the civilian population flee with them when the army advanced.

"More than 500 civilian deaths, either on or after admission, have been registered at the hospitals and thousands of civilian deaths could have gone unrecorded as they were not brought to the hospitals," the letter said.

[[[The health ministry confirmed the letter's authenticity ]]]]and said there may be a drug shortage because of the difficulty of bringing in supplies, which come in a large ferry and are then carried ashore in small boats.

Colombo, Sri Lanka — The period of rapid progress by the Sri Lankan military over the past few months seems to have come to an end. The last few kilometers of territory controlled by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam are proving to be the hardest to take.
The large number of civilians packed into this area along with the core group of LTTE fighting cadre appear to have slowed down the military’s forward march. International attention, which only a few weeks ago was on the impressive advances of the Sri Lankan military, has now turned almost completely to the protracted humanitarian crisis.

Although the government media has tried to give a positive picture of the international messages to the government the true picture appears to be bleak. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s telephone call to President Mahinda Rajapaksa was described by the government media as an acknowledgement that Sri Lanka was on the verge of defeating terrorism. But the official communiqué of the United States highlighted concern on the deteriorating conditions and loss of life in the government designated safe zone.

The standard prescription from abroad to the crisis of trapped civilians is for a humanitarian ceasefire accompanied by an evacuation of civilians. In addition there are calls for a halt to the use of heavy weaponry in the government-declared safe zones, as it could lead to civilian casualties.

The LTTE have been accused of firing at government troops from inside these safe zones or adjacent to them, and the Sri Lankan military has been accused of firing into the safe zones. These calls have been made by a range of international actors including the United Nations and several countries.

The relative silence of the main opposition party – which ought to have its own plan to address the situation if it is called upon to govern the country in the future – is a disturbing feature of the present crisis. The largest opposition party, the United National Party, is taking an ambivalent stance rather than putting across its own ideas on how to take the ship of state to safe shores.

It appears to be taking a wait-and-see approach and leaving the government to find a solution out of the crisis. There are reports that the UNP is divided concerning its own leadership and concerning the war, with one part wishing to support the government in its war effort as a patriotic duty.

Those in the opposition who wish to support the government in its present military course will, in reality, be doing nothing to help the government in its present difficulties. This is because the government has a secure majority in Parliament and also appears to have the support of a significant majority of the national electorate, as evidenced in its convincing victories in provincial elections.

Those who support the government’s violent course of action, internationally described as crimes against humanity, do not merit taking over the leadership of the opposition. On the contrary, the opposition should give the government advice and support to save Sri Lankan lives.

The coming crisis may be worse than now anticipated. An international statement with very serious implications for those involved in the war was issued by U.N. Human Rights Commissioner Navi Pillay.

Pillay cited figures of civilian casualties that the government has challenged, and claimed that certain actions taken by the Sri Lankan military and LTTE may be violations of international human rights and humanitarian law. She described the treatment of civilians by the LTTE as brutal, inhuman and reprehensible, and the alleged firing into civilian inhabited areas as amounting to war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity can no longer be taken as idle threats or charges only brought against defeated dictators of the notoriety of Slobodan Milosevic or Saddam Hussein. Recently the president of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir, was indicted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes, the first time a sitting head of state has been charged in this manner. Ironically, the criminal charge has been filed at the very time that the government of Sudan is engaged in a peace process with the rebel groups.

The evenhandedness of the action in Sudan by the International Criminal Court may be questioned, as there are many other governments violating the human rights of their people. But the message is that once the machinery of international justice gets rolling, not even a last-minute change of course can stop it.

Although the Sudanese government has rejected the charges and expelled all international NGOs in retaliation, both the president and his minister could be arrested today in more than half the countries of the world if they should leave Sudan.

With its economy faltering – with more than 50,000 jobs in export industries being lost and the government’s request to the International Monetary Fund for a US$1.9 billion loan – Sri Lanka can ill afford to follow Sudan’s example and shut out the international community at this time.

Yet the primary response of the Sri Lankan government is to deny the accusations leveled against it and accuse international bodies of bias. The government has pointed out that the figure of more than 2,800 civilians killed and more than 7,000 injured since Jan. 20 is an exaggeration and tallies with what has been publicized by LTTE propaganda organs. The government has strongly defended its military and said it is not firing heavy weapons into government-designated safe areas or civilian inhabited areas.

On the other hand, the United Nation’s confidence in its figures could be based on the fact that its local staff continues to be trapped within LTTE-controlled territory, and the government has permitted the International Committee of the Red Cross to maintain a presence in the war zones. If the government really wishes to counter LTTE propaganda, it has little choice other than to permit independent agencies, including the United Nations, access to these areas. The truth cannot be suppressed for long, and the government needs to strategize its future course of action accordingly.

The opposition needs to assist with this strategy in the national interest. It also needs to reach out to the people in welfare camps and in the overflowing hospitals as victims of the war. Tamil citizens run the risk of being accused as supporters of the LTTE if they speak against the war or about the victims of the war; therefore it is necessary that the mainstream opposition takes up the cause of caring for and protecting the Tamil people.

Those who seek to lead the opposition must be able to provide forthright public and national leadership in the protection of civilian life as the supreme value in accord with the teachings of religious doctrine and international human rights that help to keep societies together.

More punakku from government sources.. apparently the civilian 'volunteer' human shields are abandoning their 'saviours' and coming to the side of the 'invaders':

With the territory held by the LTTE diminishing progressively the number of civilians braving LTTE threats and arriving in Government controlled areas is increasing day by day.

While 423 civilians fleeing LTTE terror were saved by the Navy on March 14, another 592 had arrived at the Government controlled Puthukudiyiruppu area on the same day. On March 15 the number that arrived at Puthukudiyiruppu had increased to 968 while the Navy had rescued another 66 persons fleeing from LTTE controlled area. On March 16 another 139 persons were rescued by the Navy.

Besides over 4500 internally displaced persons arriving from the uncleared area are receiving treatment in Government hospitals in Trincomalee, Padaviya and Vavuniya.

On March 17 by 6 p.m. the number of civilians who crossed over to the Government controlled area was 1567, the highest in a single day so far. All together 45, 519 persons have arrived since March 1.

Military sources said that the number of civilians arriving would increase in the coming areas. There are also reports that the entrapped civilians have clashed with the LTTE cadres in an attempt to leave for the safety of the Government controlled areas.

Now the IC knows how the sinhala elected government is terrorizing the Tamil population. It is matter of time before the IC impose sanction on SL. The SL government won’t be able to function for 2 months without the foreign AID.

Colombo, Sri Lanka (March 18, 2009) - CARE is mourning the loss of R. Sabesan, a humanitarian worker who was killed yesterday in the[[ no-fire zone]] in the conflict-affected area of northern Sri Lanka known as the Vanni.

"We are deeply shocked and saddened by the news of the loss of our friend and colleague Sabesan," said Nick Osborne, Country Director for CARE International in Sri Lanka. "We extend our heartfelt condolences and thoughts to his family and friends at this very difficult time."

Mr. Sabesan was one of dozens of aid workers trapped in the conflict zone along with as many as 150,000 other civilians, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross. After the withdrawal of agencies from the conflict zone in September 2008, Mr. Sabesan was amongst those staff members that were unable to leave the area. He continued to work alongside his CARE colleagues as an aid volunteer under the direction of the Government Agent, distributing aid and providing support to affected people.

Mr. Sabesan, 24, had been working for CARE as a caretaker in the Mulliativu District office since March 2005. Yesterday afternoon in the no-fire zone, Mr. Sabesan's leg was severed as a result of[[[ shelling, and due to a lack of access to the necessary medical care, he later died]]]. His funeral was held today.

"The toll this war is taking on civilians is devastating," said Osborne. "Humanitarian workers trapped in the conflict zone are just as much at risk as anyone else, and we are receiving regular reports of family members, friends and colleagues who have been injured or killed in the fighting. People need immediate access to medical care, food, and emergency supplies."

Hundreds of people have been reportedly killed or injured in the conflict zone. Food and supplies have almost run out. Civilians who try to leave are unable to do so, and are instead forced to shelter in rain-filled trenches in a desperate attempt to escape the fighting. Many of those attempting to flee are being prevented by the LTTE.

CARE is working with the government and other aid agencies to provide urgently needed food and emergency supplies to civilians who manage to escape the fighting. CARE calls for all sides to allow civilians to safely leave the conflict zone and to ensure the safety of civilians who remain caught up in the fighting.

CARE is an independent, non-political humanitarian organization that has worked in all parts of Sri Lanka since 1950. Throughout the 25-year conflict, CARE has provided support to conflict-affected communities in northern and eastern Sri Lanka through food production, infrastructure rehabilitation, savings and credit, income generation, and emergency assistance such as shelter, access to water and sanitation facilities.

Tamils say UN is complicit in "genocide"

More than ten thousand Tamils on Monday protested in front of the United Nations in Geneva, accusing the world body of complicity in a Sri Lankan "genocide".
The demonstration in front of the UN's European headquarters was part of a worldwide series of protests by the Sri Lankan minority. Organisers had pegged the turnout at 30,000.

An association for Tamils in Switzerland, the Tamil Forum, released a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemning what it called the evacuation of civilians in Sri Lanka and their placing in "army detention camps".

On Monday, the European Union appealed to Sri Lankan authorities and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebel group to agree to an immediate cease-fire to allow urgent humanitarian aid into a northern "safe zone" where civilians are supposed to be shielded from the fighting.

On Friday, Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, accused both sides of human rights violations.

The UN believes 150,000 to 180,000 civilians remain trapped in the territory still under rebel control.

LTTE rebels have fought since 1983 for an independent state for Tamils, which suffered decades of marginalisation at the hands of governments dominated by the Sinhalese majority.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in the fighting.

UNICEF's Executive Director Ann M. Veneman has spoken out on the situation in Sri Lanka.
“Hundreds of children have been killed and many more injured as a result of the conflict in Sri Lanka. Thousands are now at risk because of a critical lack of food, water and medicines,” she said. “Children and their families caught in the conflict zone are at risk of dying from disease and malnutrition.”

“Regular, safe access for humanitarian agencies is urgently required, so that lifesaving supplies can be provided, and civilians must be allowed to move to safe areas where essential humanitarian support is more readily available. The rights of children caught in the conflict must be fully respected and every effort should be taken to prevent civilian casualties.”

“UNICEF, together with other UN agencies and partners, is providing emergency water and sanitation, health, nutrition, protection and education support for many of the 40,000 people who have been able to leave the conflict zone. Children are the innocent victims of Sri Lanka’s conflict. They desperately need assistance and extraordinary efforts must be taken to protect them.”

Sri Lanka suffering from the global crisis, government in denial

Here is an interview with sociologist Sunil Ranasinghe.

In order to continue its war against Tamil Tiger rebels the government is downplaying the problem, accusing those who talk about crisis of deceiving the population. In fact “we are in the midst of a social, economic and political crisis.”

What are the reality and myths of the economic crisis in Sri Lanka?

We are trying to understand the extent, roots and nature of the crisis at the global and local levels. Academics and activists are trying to interpret a crisis that is spreading like wildfire, affecting the rich and poor alike. But the Sri Lankan government and the head of the treasury are saying that there is no economic collapse in the country related to the global crisis, and are criticising economists and the opposition for deceiving the nation on this issue.

If that were true why is it that they got the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to give them a loan? Even children know that we live in one world, affected by the same global meltdown that is affecting everybody else, with rapidly rising unemployment and poverty.

How did Sri Lanka avoid this situation? What kind of dispensation do we have that we are not affected?

The fact of the matter is that when the financial bubble burst the government asked for a US$ 1.9 billion loan to get out of the current economic quandary.

The IMF closed its bureau in Colombo in 2007, saying that no project was planned in Sri Lanka for the foreseeable future. In fact we are in the midst of a social, economic and political crisis. No one can get away with inventing political myths in order to carry out a brutal war against the nation.

Can you explain the present economic situation in Sri Lanka?

In December 2007 foreign currency reserves stood at US$ 3.4 billion dollars. Today they are down to US$ 1.7 billion, which correspond to three months of imports of food and basic necessities. In the last few years the government wiped out 45 per cent of the country’s reserves in war expenditures.

In its latest financial statement the government said it was going to raise 760 million rupees (US$ 7 million) in taxes, on the back of the population. The government is also expecting some US$ 600 million from the Japan international Bank Corporation to privatise the energy sector. Yet its overdraft on banks and the Bank of Ceylon is for more than 1.6 billion rupees (or about US$ 200 million).

The fact that the president had to call on Sri Lankan expatriates to help out is a sign of the crisis; it is the government and its backers who are deceiving the population.

How much does the past affect the current crisis?

Since 1980 many state-owned companies have been sold as part of the Structural Adjustment Program of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. This was meant to reduce the foreign debts of developing countries accumulated during the Seventies.

Sri Lanka was among the first in Asia to espouse free market economics. Since 1990 the government in Colombo has sold about 100 state corporations to private interests.

Corruption has increased as the nation’s wealth and public resources became tools in the hands of politicians and bureaucrats with total disregard for the interests of the population.

More than a thousand billion rupees have been wasted this way and people have become poorer.

The United States chose to decide their fate in the pursuit of the War on Terror, wasting US$ 35 billion since 9/11. Sri Lanka has increased military spending by billions of rupees, forgetting that half of the population lives below the poverty line.

Women and children are the hardest hit by the crisis. What can be done to avoid it?

With the war still on we cannot deal with the situation faced by many women. Women are half of a population of 20 million. One woman in two lives on 200 rupees a day (US$ 1.80) and many are poor without access to basic social services, treated like human garbage, suffering from hunger and malnutrition. About 45 per cent of pregnant women suffer from anaemia.

Children are not much better off. About 32 per cent are malnourished, and one in three is under weight.

Women are victims of the political system and male chauvinism which violate their basic rights. They are marginalised by the war and the country’s economic and cultural inequalities.

Yet they are the heart of the country’s economy. Out of 600,000 people employed in plantations, half are women who earn about a billion dollars. Out of 280,000 people working in free trade zones, about 75 per cent are young women, generating about US$ 2 billion.

All this money has not however freed women from enslavement and social segregation.

In the past 30 years more than 120,000 Sri Lankans have sent home earnings they made overseas, working as slaves
; 65 per cent of them are women, who altogether earn about US$ 2 billion.

Until a few months ago foreign remittances by emigrants were worth more than US$ 3 billion; now they are down to US$ 1.2 billion.

Who destroyed such a women-based economy, the result of women’s toiling, tears and blood?

Women working in plantation are now sitting in front of their homes watching their children go hungry, asking themselves who stole the future. More than 16,000 young female workers have been laid off. What future do they have? More than 10,000 women, who lost their husbands fighting for the army in the last three years, have given up on their land because they cannot farm it because of the war. .

Well, I myself a doctor was part of the "Doctors Without Borders" team when we visited Sri Lanka on the humanitarian mission in Tsunami time some years back. I found out that Tamils were really friendly and innocent, only politicians make the life miserable for them. In my Tsunami mission, the Srilankan government was simply tried to stop us from entering the LTTE held area which was Mullaitivu, epicenter of Tsunami affected regions in Sri lanka, citing some political reasons. In my opinion, Tamils are really discriminated by Sinhalese governments. So far, 3000+ innocent civilians are killed by shelling of Srilankan army, according to UN report few days back, it tells that government does not treat Tamils as their citizens. Jonathan Kay's accusation is unsubstantiated, according my experience in Sri Lanka.

It is also time to explore if the legal experts who helped the LTTE to draft the ISGA in 2003 are available now to help Tamils at international courts!!

In 2004, Jaffna was under the SLA for 9 years. Only SLA and douglas paramilitary can have arms and there was not even 1 LTTE. Everyone knows how many Jaffna Tamils have been killed since 1995.

In this situation, Jaffna Tamils voted for the TNA (over 90%) and of course against the GOSL coolies such as the EPDR and highly risking their own in the process. The only reason was as u always say "sole-representatives".

They can survive like the EPDP as long as they've guns and protection by the genocidal SLA forces.

If a group is "sole-representative", then the group can survive even if the genocidal forces are hunting them.

If a group is not wanted by the people (i.e. just coolies of the genocidal barbarian GOSL+SLA), then such groups struggle to exist even with the full protection of the SLA + GOSL!

Sri Lankan war killing hundreds of children: UNICEF
By South Asia correspondent Sally Sara

Posted 7 hours 7 minutes ago

The United Nations children's agency (UNICEF) says hundreds of children have been killed and thousands more injured during heavy fighting in northern Sri Lanka this year.

UNICEF says aid agencies must be allowed to provide emergency supplies to civilians stranded by the conflict.

The executive director of the United Nations Children's Fund, Ann Veneman says hundreds of children have died and thousands are at risk of disease and malnutrition in northern Sri Lanka.

Ms Veneman says civilians must be allowed to move to safer areas and aid agencies must be given access to the conflict zone.

The Sri Lankan Government says up to 70,000 civilians are trapped by fighting between government forces and the Tamil Tigers.

The United Nations says the figure is closer to 200,000 people

Sri Lanka is in full collapse. I guess the one who realised the real estate markets were going to tank in the US made his hedge fund clients 600% richer.

He even went to Bear Sterns and told them that their risk. In the meeting the CEO who did not want to lose face said, We know our risks and we know how to handle them. However once the meeting was over he told the hedge fund guy that he hoped that his predicitions will not come true. Few months down the road bear sterns went bust.

One of the Sri Lankan here said i forgot Hillary. I did not. She is one of the nooses. The other said I was a butt of jokes. Thanks. It tells me that the Sri Lankan dispora do remeber my words and are bothered by what I say. That is what makes a difference.

4)Tea exports are down. Garment exports are down without the GSP plus
5)The banks need bailing out for bailing out the failed Mahindha adventures.
6)Your propaganda machine has failed and sites like Defencewire and Defencenet have been demolished that they no longer report regularly
7) Sri lankans still want the truth from the front to come to know that from the people of eelam. Hence they need to continue to come and listen. Worst still they feel they need to rebut, more to calm their nerves.

Since now many Sri Lankans are comming here. I used to wonder why many senior officers are not killed from the SLA. When i saw the office being held under an umberella while his men was drenched i realised what kind of ponnaya he was.

For those who do not know in 1967 during the annual national day or independence day celeberations in Singapore, it was a heavy downpour. The present prime ministe was is the school cadets contigent while his sister was in the band. His father was then prime minister. Despite the heavy downpour all the ministers, mps and prade participants stood their ground. Finally only the president was sheltered as he was an old man. the president Yushof Ishak was the first asian to become a cadet officer then.

The prime minister recalled the spirit of the people then. His father said that as a young nation people would judge us. Again today if you read tamilnet, he has slammed the sri lankan government.

You shameless High Commisioner has kept silent all the way. No Protest. So many Sri Lankan who are working in Singapore are silent. I think ANUD in LNP is from Singapore. The shameless people will keep silent because they know its the truth.

“Concerning the proposed loan to Sri Lanka by the International Monetary Fund, United States domestic law makes it quite clear that the Obama Administration is obligated to oppose the loan. And given the weighted voting system for the IMF Board of Directors, a United States vote against the loan would be tantamount to a veto,” said Prof. Boyle, Professor at Illinois College of Law, adding, “for the Obama Administration to violate the Statute [22 USC 262d] and vote in favor of the proposed IMF loan to support the GOSL's "policy goals" would render the United States government "complicit" with Sri Lanka's genocide.”

As Sri Lanka Says No to Conditions, UN Says It Will Set Them, Journalists and UNESCO

UNITED NATIONS, March 18 -- The day after it emerged that the UN has known of at least 2,683 civilians killings in Sri Lanka between January 20 and March 7 of this year, the UN's expert on Children and Armed Conflict Radhika Coomaraswamy acknowledged the UN is funding the government's so-called detention camps. Video here, from Minute 15:43. She said, however, that any long-term funding should be conditioned on the internally displaced people -- who are Tamils -- have freedom of movement. Currently, they cannot leave the camps, and no one can visit them.

The government of Sri Lanka, meanwhile, is opposing any conditions from anyone, including on the $1.8 billion loan they have applied to from the International Monetary Fund. A week ago, Inner City Press asked the IMF's spokesman David Hawley if the Fund was considering any safeguards that the loans not support the military conflict in the north, on which already one briefing as been held in the UN Security Council. Mr. Hawley said to wait and watch what conditions are imposed. Now the government says there will be no conditions at all. But will there be a loan?

Inner City Press on Wednesday asked Nicholas Burnett, Assistant Director-General for Education at UNESCO, why his agency, while condemn crackdowns on the press in the Philippines and elsewhere has said nothing about the newspaper editors locked up during the current conflict, and journalists previously killed. Mr. Burnett said, I can get you an answer. Video here, from Minute 18:36. Three hours later his spokesperson asked Inner City Press to email the questions, which was done:

As I asked at the briefing earlier today, what has UNESCO had to say about the recent imprisonment of two journalists in Sri Lanka, on which RSF is requesting UN action

This is a specific request, also, for comment on 1) the killing of a journalist described at http://www.rsf.org/article.php3?id_article=30312

and 2) on the comments which the Sri Lankan President’s brother, Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa made about Vithyatharan in an interview for ... Australia's Special Broadcasting Service (SBS). “He is involved in the recent air attack and I am telling you if you try to give cover-up for that person you have blood in your hands,” Rajapaksa said. “And if someone says he is arrested because he is in media, that person also has blood on his hands.”

UNESCO's answers, not received the day the question was asked at noon, will be published on this site after they are received.

UN's Bank and Sri Lankan President's advisor and brother, camps not show

For the record, this has been the UN's response to the media on the publication of the leaked casualty memo, at the March 18 noon briefing:

Inner City Press: I think it was last month you’d said that the United Nations doesn’t count bodies, it just helps people; that it didn’t have a count of casualties. Yesterday, it came into my possession, an OCHA [Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs] document that says, unequivocally, the total minimum number of civilian casualties is 9,000, including 2,683 deaths. So I am wondering if in fact OCHA was counting, you know, as I think it probably should be [interrupted].

Spokesperson Montas: No, they’re not counting them directly. What we said was that we rely on numbers given to us locally, nationally. We don’t ourselves count the bodies.

Inner City Press: Right, but I guess if you had this document (interrupted).

Spokesperson Montas: That was an estimate, I gather.

Inner City Press: But it says 2683, so it’s a pretty precise number. And my understanding from what I gathered is that this is the number and that the United Nations tried not to release the number in order not to offend the Government of Sri Lanka. Is that (interrupted)?

Spokesperson: Well, it seems to be released, since you’re reading it.

Inner City Press: Well, yeah, I got it, so, I mean. But I guess even, my understanding is in these OCHA briefings that they do -- with some diplomats, they didn’t give the number. I guess I just want to square, first of all, I want to confirm that this is OCHA’s… I guess I just want you to say something about it.

Spokesperson: No, I cannot confirm that. This is an estimate, and you can talk to OCHA about how they reached that estimate.

Inner City Press: Is there some way to know why in some cases the United Nations does provide numbers? Even recently, people have been asking about the Darfur number, the 300,000 number. There, they gave a number. Here, they hid a number. So I don’t understand.

Spokesperson: Well, because sometimes we don’t have the information, the exact information to be able to reach even an estimate. It’s just a function of how much information we get on the ground.

So by the UN's logic, a government benefits from excluding the press. We'll await UNESCO's answers.

Sri Lanka civilians need 'urgent help': aid group

COLOMBO (AFP) — Civilians pouring out of the war zone in Sri Lanka's north are in dire need of emergency surgical and psychological help, an international aid group said Thursday.

Medecins Sans Frontiers (Doctors Without Borders, or MSF) also voiced "extreme" concern for 150,000 Tamil civilians still trapped by fierce fighting between government forces and Tamil Tiger rebels.

The statement is the latest sign of the aid community's alarm over the situation in northern Sri Lanka, where most agencies are barred by the government from working.

"MSF remains extremely worried about the situation for approximately 150,000 civilians remaining in the Wanni," MSF said of Sri Lanka's northern jungles.

Most of those managing to escape the fighting were injured or traumatised, it said.

"The majority of the surgical cases are violence-related. The wounds are predominantly caused by shrapnel and shooting," MSF said, without accusing either side of responsibility for civilian casualties.

"Many have lost relatives or even entire families. They have no contact with the family or friends and often do not know whether those they left behind are still alive."

Sri Lanka's government says that nearly 40,000 people have fled the fighting while placing the number left behind at fewer than 70,000.

Those who reach government-held areas are housed in controversial "transition shelters" guarded by armed troops. Critics have described them as concentration camps.

"There is literally nothing for them to do except wait. In the camps, they have no jobs or schools. They have lost all autonomy. Their lives are on hold with constant fear about the safety of their loved ones," MSF said.

The Sri Lankan military accuses the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) of using civilians as human shields, and that escaping Tamil civilians are being well-looked after.

But last week the United Nations' human rights chief, Navi Pillay, said she feared both the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tigers could be guilty of war crimes.

On Tuesday, the head of the UN children's agency, UNICEF, said hundreds of children had died in recent heavy fighting, which has seen a blistering government offensive dismantle most of the LTTE's mini-state.

The European Union is demanding it be allowed to send a fact-finding mission to the north, which has so far been off-limits also to diplomats and journalists.

Colombo withdrew from a Norwegian-brokered truce with the rebels at the beginning of last year.

It has rejected calls for another truce, saying troops now have the upper hand in the decades-old ethnic conflict and are close to crushing the separatist rebels once and for all.

A real terrorist group is characterized by fear for no reason, i.e. no one wants to go to Pakistan becoz the terrorist organizations there can attach any one for no-reason ... this is the actal terrorist organization.

All Tamils in Sri Lanka are living in a constant fear of being kidnapped by white-van, arrested, tortured, killed, etc. This characterizes the terrorist, genocidal government in sri lanka.

"Lankan cricket coach Bayliss fears terrorists could target Commonwealth Games" in India (http://www.andhranews.net/Sports/2009/March/10-Lankan-cricket-coach-94050.asp). This also suggests a terrorist nature becoz for reason Trevor is becoming scared.

To date, LTTE has not targeted any overseas person anywhere. So, no overseas individual feels scared of LTTE!

So, Tamils have to find answer why the LTTE is labeled as a terrorist organization when no overseas individual or country is scared of them! This answer will be the key to their freedom!

Sri Lanka To Protest To Countries Allowing Pro-Rebel Rallies

Thursday March 19th, 2009 / 15h18

COLOMBO (AFP)--Sri Lanka will lodge strong protests with countries where demonstrators have show support for the island's separatist Tamil Tiger rebels, a minister said Thursday.
Sri Lanka's Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said pro-rebel sympathizers have been staging demonstrations in Australia, Belgium, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, the U.K. and the U.S., using Tiger propaganda.
There had been several self-immolations at pro-Tiger demonstrations in India's southern state of Tamil Nadu, but Colombo won't take up issue with New Delhi because the demonstrators didn't display Tamil Tiger flags, the minister said.
Sri Lanka's Tamils share close cultural and religious links with the 55 million Tamils in Tamil Nadu, which is also home to thousands of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees.
However, in other countries, the demonstrators had draped themselves in Tiger flags, the minister said.
Several Tamils have also attempted self-immolation in Geneva and London.
"The LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) is a banned organization in some of these countries. We are surprised these countries allow LTTE sympathizers to use the LTTE flags so openly in their protests against us," the minister told reporters here.
He said Sri Lanka had asked its diplomatic missions in these countries to lodge protests over the pro-rebel activities, which he described as "supporting terrorism."
"We can only assume that these people will continue to fund the LTTE (and) that they are in the forefront of raising funds for the Tigers," he said.
Sri Lanka's Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona added that the U.N. charter prohibited glorification of terrorism.
"To glorify a terrorist organization is totally misplaced. We have asked our high commissioners, our ambassadors, to raise the issue with their host governments," Kohona said.
Sri Lanka's military says it is on the verge of defeating the Tigers, who have been fighting for a separate state since 1972. The LTTE have now been confined to a small strip of land in the island's northeast.

RAJIVA WIJESINHA (Sri Lanka), speaking in a right of reply, said their statement was in response to the statements made by Japan, Australia and the United States, among others. Sri Lanka did in fact take care of its civilians. The Government of Sri Lanka intended to restore democratic process in the country after years of totalitarian rule. The Government would pursue investigations into violations against human rights in the country. Sri Lanka took note of the concern of the United States with respect to the need to train the law enforcement officials, but Sri Lanka said that that was something that many other Member States remained to implement as well. Sri Lanka stressed that it was not too late for a concerted effort. Sri Lanka said that the Human Rights Council must deal with the behaviour of State parties.

**Excerpts on Sri Lankan Issues only:

TOMAS HUSAK, (Czech Republic), speaking on behalf of the European Union, said The High Commissioner should brief the Council on the evolving human rights situation in Sri Lanka.

CHRISTOPHE GUILHOU (France) said that the situation in Sri Lanka was also alarming. France was particularly concerned by the dramatic situation of the persons held in the conflict zone. Everything had to be put in place in order to protect those civilians.

SHINICHI KITAJIMA (Japan) said regarding the situation in Sri Lanka, Japan was concerned about the serious damages and casualties surrounding internally displaced persons and other civilians in the north of the country. In order to resolve the ethnic conflict, it was of paramount importance that the political process be pursued.

BOUDEWIJN J. VAN EENENNAAM (Netherlands) said there was also deep concern for the situation in Sri Lanka.

TERRY CORMIER (Canada) said the human rights situation in Sri Lanka continued to deteriorate with the intensification of the civil conflict. There had been politically-motivated killings by paramilitary forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), violent attacks on journalists, enforced disappearances, restrictions of freedom of movement and arbitrary arrests in Sri Lanka.

Canada called on Sri Lanka to respect the human rights of internally displaced persons consistent with the Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement.

MURIEL BERSET (Switzerland) said the tenth session of the Council gave them the opportunity to address many human rights situations both through the reports of Special Procedures, reports of the High Commissioner, different agenda items and the different reports examined in the context of the Universal Periodic Review.

The issue of internally displaced persons in Sri Lanka was also of great concern to Switzerland as the situation was worsening. As a result, Switzerland appealed to all parties in the conflict to respect international law, on proportionality, among other things. Switzerland also recalled the responsibility incumbent to the Sri Lankan authorities to prevent and punish forced executions, forced disappearances, and appealed for an immediate halt of all hostilities and work towards lasting peace.

KONRAD SCHARINGER (Germany) said, the human rights situation in Sri Lanka was deplored - violations were committed by both sides to the conflict.

MELANIE HOPKINS (United Kingdom) said the United Kingdom was concerned about the human rights situation in Sri Lanka. The United Kingdom welcomed the progress made in some areas, in particular to tackle the recruitment of child soldiers and the political commitment by the TMVP to disarm. But they said there were still credible reports of widespread human rights violations, including disappearances, extortion, extra-judicial killings and attacks and intimidation against the media. The murder in January of the Chief Editor of the Sunday Leader was a particular concern.

CAROLINE MILLAR (Australia) said, Up to 200,000 civilians continued to be caught up in the conflict zone in Northern Sri Lanka - long-term political stability would only be achieved through a political solution that met the needs of all.

JULIE DE RIVERO, of Human Rights Watch, said the statement of the High Commissioner on Sri Lanka was a call for the Council to take decisive action to respond to the urgent needs of civilians trapped in the fighting in the Vanni. What was being seen could amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity, and there should be an urgent independent investigation of what was happening. The Government should give the United Nations and other independent agencies full access to the conflict zone.

LUKAS MACHON, of International Commission of Jurists, said, In Sri Lanka, many civilians had been exposed to unlawful killings and other human rights violations. There was an eminent need to analyse that situation through a fact-finding mission.

Ms. DI POGGIO, of France Libertés – Fondation Danielle Mitterrand, said, Regarding Sri Lanka, a failure by the Council to undertake urgent action would be tantamount to allowing the genocide of the Tamil people. The Council should insist on a resolution of the conflict, guaranteeing the full human rights of the Tamils, including their right to choose their future.

Secondly, since 2006, the item on self-determination was no longer on the agenda, but there were situations where serious human rights violations resulted from the denial of that right,

GEORGE SIGAMONY, of Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (Forum-Asia)/, in a joint statement with Asian Legal Resource Centre, called for urgent action of the Human Rights Council on the human rights catastrophe in Sri Lanka. The grave concern of the international community was not only limited to the current situation of civilians in northern Sri Lanka. The core problems of discrimination and impunity had been allowed to go unabated throughout the country in the past years. The world had witnessed a sharp increase of the un-investigated killings and disappearances against human rights defenders and prominent religious personalities there.

UNITED NATIONS, March 19 -- The day after the UN involuntarily admitted counting 2,683 civilian killings in Sri Lanka from January 20 to March 7 of this year, efforts to hold a second UN Security Council meeting on Sri Lanka were described to Inner City Press by a range of Council diplomats. Non-permanent Council members including Austria, Mexico and Costa Rica have requested the meeting for March 26, under the heading "Other Matters" since Sri Lanka is still not a formal item on the Council's agenda.

These members thought they had agreement from other Council members, but now China is "vehemently" opposing any discussion in the Council of the plight of civilians in the Sri Lankan conflict. China argues that it is "merely an internal matter," and not a threat to international peace and security.

Sri Lanka's mission to the UN has contacted Council members to make this same argument. Those requesting the meeting are considering calling a procedural vote, on which there are no veto rights. If they have nine votes for the meeting, it will be held -- unless they don't even call for a vote. The position, and strength of commitment, of Western Permanent Five members is not known at press time.

Going by the definition, the barbarian Singhalas are at it since 1956 against the poor Tamils in SL!

you can list the attacks by LTTE targeting overseas persons, if u r aware of any. if u cannot, then no such attacks exist!

I'd define terrorism as "making people scared for no justifiable reason"! This is what the GOSL is doing to alL Tamils in SL!

So you think if a terrorist thinks that they have a good enough reason they can terrorize and kill innocent ppl??

this is again stupidity!

The above definition applies to the GOSL's terrorizing the Tamils. Everyday, 100-300 innocent Tamil civilians are killed or injured in Vanni by the genocidal SLA barbarians.

LTTE targes SL forces, while the GOSL targets all Tamils all over the SL!

he he.. what about the Ltte bombs went off in central bank , airport, Maligawa temple in kandy.. etc.. last time I checked those places are not SL force bases or anything to do with SL forces.. lame

hehe... u can list a few (no civilian injured at airport), but Tamils can list in Thousands of casualties since 1956. In fact, there are 100-200 pages long books on barabrian state terrorism of Tamils.

if no civilian is injured / killed, it is vandalism in English.

by your statement, actually, the GOSL is in the dreamland now!! GOSL estimates that it requires 400k soldiers now to occupy . I'm sure all the singhala modayas are only capable of taking up guns and terrorizing innocent civilians, otherwise good for nothing!

In the soon to be extinct language of Peelame, the one which Mahinda(n) uses,
Tiger terrorist lunatic = innocent civilian

Then yes, we are quite good at terrorizing and killing retarded terrorists!! The LTTPers crap their pants and faint when they see SLA personnel!
LMAO
