UN concerned for single staff member, doesn't care for 200,000 other civilians

By R. Srivatsava

Today the U.N. released a statement that they were deeply concerned for the well being of one of their paid staff workers forcibly conscripted by the LTTE to fight against the Sri Lankan army. I find it odd that the UN has so much concern for this one person, yet for two months the UN has said absolutely nothing when thousands of other civilians have been murdered by the Sri Lankan army.

In their report they are so concerned that a 16 year old daughter of their paid staff worker has also been conscripted to fight, but no mention of all the other children of the Tamil people currently dying in the Vanni at the hands of the Sri Lankan army. They are very concerned anytime a child is made to fight in the war, but why aren't they bothered when many hundreds of children have been killed by the Sri Lankan government in artillery bombings? Does this seem balanced to anyone? One 16 year old child is conscripted to fight under emergency situations, and the UN sends out press releases to the world, yet 700 children have been murdered by the Sri Lankan government in less than two months, and the U.N. remains completely silent. What exactly are the moral values of the U.N. that compell it to speak quickly when the LTTE merely conscripts someone, but remain silent when the Sri Lankan government engages in mass murder?

Does the U.N. consider murder to be a lesser crime than conscription? If a single act of forced conscription can result in the U.N. sending press releases throughout the world, then a single act of murder should likewise generate even more of a response from the U.N. We should have seen 3,000 such press releases from the U.N. condemning the Sri Lankan government for all the times civilians have been murdered in the last two months! But the facts are the U.N. has remained completely silent despite thousands of murders and other attrocities being committed by the Sri Lankan government.

Fear not! The U.N. is not ignoring your sufferings, they are just waiting for another case of a forced conscription before they speak out and chastise the LTTE for their inhuman war crimes. Until then, stay in your bunker, eat whatever leaves you can scrounge, and keep having faith that the U.N. is there to help you. After your children have been murdered and your daughters raped, the U.N. will be there to provide food for you inside the government's concentration camps. The next three years of your life will be wonderful, all thanks to the U.N. and their great concern for your people. You may be raped, murdered or starved, but they will never let you be forcibly conscripted - for that would be a crime against humanity.

The press release from the UN states:

"The UN in Sri Lanka has protested to the LTTE that UN national staff, as well as children in general, are protected under national and international law from recruitment by armed groups, and has called for their immediate release."

Find a single conscripted 16 year old girl: demand the LTTE immediate release her. Find 200,000 civilians being bombed to hell by the Sri Lankan army: wait silently for two months and then congratulate the army for putting an end to terrorism. Welcome to the double standards of the United Nations, who's only aim is to satisfy member states. The purpose of all organizations are to benefit their members. In this case the Tamil civilians happen to not be members of the UN, so their wellfare is irrelevant. How else can you explain the U.N. being so concerned for a single conscripted girl, but not caring at all when 3,000 civilians have been killed. Though they were quick to immediately condemn the LTTE as soon as they heard about this conscription, the U.N. has been hearing of civilians being killed by the Sri Lankan government for months, yet isn't in a hurry to say anything.

The U.N. is so hypocritical that they are blaming the LTTE for the Sri Lankan government's own crimes. It is the Sri Lankan government who is bombing the civilians. It is the Sri Lankan government who is starving the civilians by not allowing food into the area. It is the Sri Lankan government who is not allowing medecine into the area. Yet the U.N. says the Sri Lankan government is not at fault. Who is at fault for all of these crimes? Of course its the LTTE. Its the LTTE's fault that the Sri Lankan government is bombing the civilians. It's the LTTE's fault that the Sri Lankan government is not allowing food to the civilians. Its the LTTE's fault that the Sri Lankan government is not allowing medecine to the civilians. Everything is the LTTE's fault in the eyes of the U.N. despite the fact that it is the Sri Lankan government doing everything. The Sri Lankan government is the one who invaded the Tamil homeland. The Sri Lankan government is the one with hundreds of artillerly cannons firing into the heavily populated civilian areas. It is the Sri Lankan government dropping bombs from airplanes on the civilians. But all of that is the fault of the LTTE in the eyes of the U.N. simply because the U.N. must defend their own member states. They are completely blind to all of these attrocities, but as soon as they see a single child recruited as a soldier, they swoop down with their eagle eyes to point out the violation of human rights.

Dear United Nations keep your false concern for my people to yourself. We don't want your false mercy and compassion. While 3,000 of my brothers and sisters were murdered by the Sri Lankan government you sat silently without concern. Now you want to pretend that you are so concerned for one single girl who has bravely taken up arms to defend her people? If you are not here to help us, then leave us be to die an honorable death, defending our people from the Sinhala invaders. Let our children die with weapons in their hands, rather than die helplessly in a bunker with bombs falling from above.

In every country in the world, in times of emergency, the citizens are required to sacrifice and serve their country by taking up arms. Even a country like the United States has had forcible conscription during past wars. Why do you think someone should be exempt from this sacrifice just because he was a paid worker for the U.N.? Thousands of other Tamil civilians have also been forcibly conscripted to defend their people and homeland, but you haven't spoken up to protect them. Why is it you are only concerned for those people who were your paid workers? During times of peace they benefitted from your work, and earned more money than others, but now that it is a time of war they will have to sacrifice like all of the Tamil people have to. There will be no special protection for your chosen few. Keep your hollow and false compassion for your own people. While thousands of Tamil civilians are being murdered, you pretend to be alarmed and shocked that one person is being forced to fight. All Tamils will live together as one and die together as one. If you don't have compassion for all of our people, then we do not want your compassion for any of our people.

I suppose that could possibly be true if all Tamils were under LTTE control and could be, in your words, forcibly conscripted... but most are not and as such this is more poorly considered rhetoric.

Oh yes.. will tens of millions of Tamils in India be part of this Jonesville style of collective death you are claiming? The diaspora too?

Again, for the sake of constructive dialogue please refrain from such base bombast. If you do no more than let the GoSL self-destruct it would be better than offering up the sort of dreck that only emboldens the extremist fools on the other side.

I have been fruitlessly searching for a copy of the Constitution of Eelam in hopes of reading up on the mechanism of forced conscription mentioned by Badrinath.

Can someone help me find it?

Is forced conscription part of the original constitution or possibly an amendment? How is the process managed in times of war like this and how is it managed in times of peace?

Talk about inside knowledge.

Who would have guessed there was heavy fighting in a hotly contested war zone!

What I'd like to know is the true number of GoSL casualties. Regardless of the outcome there can be no doubt they have paid a high price in the blood of both their own soldiers and the people they are 'liberating'.

Time for a ceasefire.

Time for leaders on both sides to man up and back down for the sake of the many innocent folks who want peace and prosperity... and are willing to negotiate just that.

There is not Eelam contitution. The LTTE is fighting for the right to establish one. However, I recommend that you read the vaddukoddai resolution which is widely regarded as the tamil declaration of independence.

http://www.eelam.com/introduction/vaddukoddai.html

It's worth noting that the TULF who contested the NE in the 1977 elections on this platform won in a landslide. It's the closest thing there has been to a referendum on separation.

Of course I know there is no Eelam constitution. That was my point. I have read the declaration and can't find any mention of forced conscription and any legal mechanisms in their regard.

My point is, again, Badrinath shoots his mouth off and brings disrepute to the cause. He basically came out and admitted that the LTTE are, by even the loosest definition, war criminals.

Its not like VP ran an election on any kind of platform that in some way legitimises forced conscription... ergo it is an arbitrary function the people have had no say in.

It's his English I worry about. He throws around words carelessly and brings disrepute to the genuine concerns of the parties involved.

Mind you... you are no better. Why post up GoSL propaganda and expect reasonable folks to believe it?

This is a dirty war and both sides are lying through their teeth.

Wake up and smell the cordite.

the UN is always like that , Rwanda genocide and UN play is the best example to explain the role of UN in the world.

they simply not worth for anyone except for some of world power for manipulations.

in Rwanda more than one million people got massacred with in just 90 days , the UN simply ignored and did vacate its own staffs in stead of protecting them , they could have avoided the ONE MILLION death ,but they simply let it go...

the same here in Srilanka , they simply let the genocide take place while they look for opportunities to promote their interest - this is world oder from day one, we cannot change.

TAMILS AROUND THE WORLD IS THE ONLY HOPE FOR THE SUFFERING INNOCENT TAMILS , AND A SEPARATE COUNTY SHOULD BE FOUND TO AVID SUCH GENOCIDE IN FUTURE.

You are saying all Tamils can do is insult. How is that true. It is taking GoSL over 25 years to come this close to the LTTE and they are achieving this by killing INNOCENT TAMILS who just want their own land and peace. Mostly FREEDOM from Stinklese Government.

We were able to show the world that we are capable of running a state without the help of the outside world unlike the GoSL who needs assistance from China, Pakistan, Japan, Israel, India, Russia and the U.S. to get this far. Begging every government in the world for money and resources to buy more arms instead of getting the economy back up.

We (Tamils) are far more intelligent then any member in your government, that is why we see GoSL still struggling to defeat the Tamil Tigers. The GoSL keeps extending the date when they will defeat them, it started from Jan 2009, then June 2009 now 2010. Having trouble passing through some FDL?

The LTTE is most professional militant group in the world and also the first militant group have an Air Force. Expect more air attacks in coming months.

The day independent media gets into the "War Zone", the world will know who it tell the truth and who was hiding the true facts.

You might have a point, if only by dint of accident. The problem is the location of an Eelamist state.

If the majority of Tamils live in India why not work towards statehood in Tamil Nadu? If Tamil Nadu where to succeed from India would the problems in Sri Lanka miraculously disappear?

We both know there would still be a problem.

Extremism must be defeated and a willingness to negotiate every aspect of the problems must be open to discussion. Both sides are locking themselves into intractable positions that can only ensure further conflict and bloodshed.

Over two hundred thousand Tamils in the GTO. Less than one in twenty in attendance. Are these the same Tamils who Badrinath claimed would be dying en masse?

Tamil supporters need to put their energies into developing a comprehensive leadership alternative to the failed LTTE. The cause is just and Tamils deserve better.

hmmmmmmmmm...... I think the ealamist are still reeling from the effect of seeing a comparatively true and fair report from the UN.....

the point here is, if the LTTE is so desperate to forcibly recruit a UN member and his 16 year old daughter (I mean, they must have known ahead of the negative press this will create)..then what must be the plight of the stranded civilians...how many of them must be forcibly recruited? How many 14,15,16 year old's must be forcibly recruited and sent with a gun to get blasted in to smithereens by the SLA...

See badri..how u are and Die-asspora are ruining the lives of the people back home..... Now that u are safe and sound in some far away country, you keep promoting a failed cause, and endorse the killings of your own people...

"It is a fact that the Sri Lankan army got destroyed in battles prior to the ceasefire. They were on the verge of defeat and very weak. The government went for a ceasefire with full intention to rebuild the army and again launch a war on the Tamils. ***Prabhakaran's mistake was to trust them and not finish them when he had them weakened***."

Are you saying that the Stupendous Thalaivar makes mistakes- the type that get 200,000 Tamil civilians trapped between the SLA and the ocean???

I have to give you credit for your subtlety in trashing the iyakkam- you had all the Eelamoids like Peter fooled. My compliments.

They've seen enough fighting & destruction and unspeakable horrors of war. Their time has come. Their time for change is almost here. Not more of the same of the hypocritical fat pig named Prabhakran, but something Karuna, Pilliyan, Devananda, Anandasagaree and other thamil leaders endorse. We need to pass laws to guarantee minority rights much like the US system. Enough is enough, these innocent tahmil people are smart, resilient and hardworking. There's always room for folks like that in our country. Sri Lanka belongs to all of its' people (Thamil, Muslim, Burgher, Malay, Sinhalese and everyone else). No one ehnic group is better than the next one. Every one MUST be equal. But, we'll not waiver in our fight against terrorism.

Looking forward to a new tomorrow without the bastards, killers, murders, rapists, thieves, war criminals and motherfuckers, known as the LTTE. Soon it'll be lights out.... Sleep tight...

Sri Lankan government seeks IMF bailout
By Thusitha Silva and Saman Gunadasa
17 March 2009

Confronting a worsening foreign exchange crisis, the Sri Lankan government is seeking a $US1.9 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to bail out the country. The island's foreign reserves fell from $3.5 billion last July to just $1.7 billion in December as export earnings fell, foreign investors pulled out and the Central Bank spent millions of dollars to stem the depreciation of the rupee.

The December figure is enough to cover just 1.5 months of imports—one of the worst positions of any emerging economy. Last month, Fitch Ratings downgraded its outlook for Sri Lanka to negative, warning that it could run out of cash to cover the current account deficit without a drop in imports or a devaluation of the rupee.

The government and Central Bank officials have desperately downplayed the country's precarious financial position. Central Bank governor Ajith Cabraal claimed that the IMF had approached the Sri Lankan government with a loan offer, rather than the other way around, and suggested that it came without significant strings attached.

In an interview with the state-owned Sunday Observer yesterday, Cabraal lashed out at critics, saying: "Many of these economic horror stories are created by a group of people who wish to see an unstable country and an unbalanced economy and are trying their best to destabilise our country." Such a threat is not an idle one in a country where journalists are jailed and murdered for criticising the government.

President Mahinda Rajapakse is particularly sensitive to any suggestion that he is going cap in hand to the IMF and will have to agree to tough new austerity measures. The government is already facing growing popular anger over deteriorating living standards produced by its huge military expenditures and the impact of the global economic crisis.

The size of the IMF loan request is unprecedented—three times Sri Lanka's quota at the IMF. An IMF team held a meeting with Central Bank officials in early March and are due back in Colombo at the end of the month with a decision.

There is no doubt that the government desperately needs the loan. Dushini Weerakoon, senior economist at the government-funded Institute of Policy Studies, told the media there was a large outflow of $US600 million in the second half of 2008 as foreign investors pulled out of Central Bank bonds. To prevent the currency from collapsing, the Central Bank pumped $200 million a month (between September and November) to defend an "unsustainable exchange rate policy". Despite these efforts, the rupee has depreciated by more than 6 percent since last October.

The country's current account deficit widened to $3.6 billion or 8.8 percent of GDP in 2008 from $1.5 billion in 2007. The main reason for the rise was a huge import bill of $14 billion, coupled with declining export earnings. Although hidden in the figures, a significant element of the import bill was the government's large purchases of arms from Pakistan, Israel, China and Russia. After Rajapakse restarted the war in July 2006, defence spending jumped from 96 billion rupees ($US840 million) in 2006 to 200 billion in 2008.

Oil prices fell sharply in 2008, easing the cost of oil imports. However, Fitch Ratings commented in February: "International oil prices have declined in recent months, and so too has Sri Lanka's trade deficit, but this has not prevented a steady drawdown in official reserves" as a result of high external debt repayments and other net capital outflows. The rating agency predicted a growth rate of just 3.2 percent in 2009, substantially less than the official estimate of 5.5 percent.

Previously the government borrowed on the international money markets to finance the war. In February, Rajapakse announced two measures to raise money—the sale of up to $500 million in war bonds to Sinhalese expatriates and currency swaps with other central banks—but neither was sufficient. As Dushini Weerakoon told the Asia Times: "We have exhausted access to domestic borrowing and international markets."

Commentators have dismissed government claims that the IMF loan would come without strings attached. The Sunday Times, for instance, wrote yesterday: "[T]he IMF would lay down certain conditions that would have to be fulfilled. These could relate to the exchange rate, expenditure on certain items, overall government expenditure and the fiscal deficit. The conditions could extend further to issues of good governance, the implementation of reforms and the privatisation of certain public enterprises."

Pakistan received an IMF emergency loan at the end of last year. The conditions included: eliminating all subsidies on energy, petroleum products and fertiliser; slashing government spending with the retrenchment of hundreds of thousands of employees; and raising taxes. Previously, the IMF and World Bank have called on the Sri Lankan government to cut its fiscal deficit, slash the public sector workforce, reduce price subsidies and implement privatisation.

Already there are signs that the government is bowing to IMF pressure. Treasury issued a directive last Thursday to provincial councils not to recruit any new employees because the government cannot pay their salaries. The agriculture minister announced that future fertiliser subsidies would be tied to sales to the government paddy marketing board. Many poor farmers have no choice but to sell their rice crop to private traders. Earlier this month, the government pushed through legislation that opens the door for the privatisation of electricity generation, transmission and distribution.

Exporters are pushing for a range of measures designed to increase their competitiveness, including the devaluation of the rupee. Export growth slowed from 11 percent in 2007 to 6.5 percent in 2008, but was accelerating toward the end of last year. Two of the country's major exports—garments and tea—fell by 6.3 percent and 22.5 percent respectively in December compared to the same month in 2007. One survey found that 24 garment factories have shut in the past six months.

The Employers Federation of Ceylon (EFC) has already begun to lobby the government for "greater flexibility of labour laws" to allow the "short-term lay-off of workers" and the reduction of the working week from 5.5 to 5 days. The EFC also wants an increase in the working day to 9 hours with no overtime bonuses.

Having imposed the economic burden of the war on working people, the Rajapakse government will have no hesitation in propping up big business and the island's financial system, by accepting an IMF loan that will lead to deepening poverty and unemployment.

Re: LTTE,

Sivanesan,

If it's not for LTTE, you're nobody in SL. Tamils made so much sacrifices for a position where you sit comfortably and talk bad about LTTE now. This is how goes - whenever 1000s of our youths sacrifice their lives in this Eelam war, the traitors/arseholes like you Karuna, Pillaiyan, DD,AS and you will score browny points by undermining the LTTE with Sinhalese who will keep you on board until Tamil blood gets dry.

In the first week of 83 riots, when some of the SLA army personnels were deployed in around 50 trucks, jeep and APC from Vavuniya to Elephantpass camp through A-9, they stopped in our store junction,Kilinochi, killed 10 innocent Tamils, 3 of them were in our store where my grandpa was begging on knees of those SLA personnels not to shoot them.

In my schooling days with JHC, I often used to visit my parents in Kilinochi from Jaffna on the long weekends or term leave. And it would always be nightmare to pass the EPS SLA camp where I saw SLA often beat the Tamil passengers with rifle butts, my mother always asked me to put my head down and do not raise the head into window side of the bus - this was happened in the period between 83 and 87, after all I was just 13 or 14 years old that time. If you do not show up your JHC student card to SLA in EPS, you will be taken inside for interrogation. My mother never allowed me to visit from Jaffna to Kili on my own, this is how every parents worried about their teenagers long ago before LTTE got the prominence in the Tamil communities.

Why should a family like us to leave SL When we had relatives, friends, acres of land, home? Our stores were bombed/burned 3 times between the period of 83 and 89.

I saw my friends, relatives and innocent civilian getting killed by SLA back home. When I said good-bye to Jaffna, I walked through 12 dead bodies in our village,Velanai, in 1990.

Until we get satisfactory solution which is no less of North and East combined federal solutions, we never give up our struggles. You racist Sinhalese will walk through our dead bodies of all Tamils if you want to achieve your Sinhala only nation.

Sri Lanka state bank to get bailout
Mar 17, 2009 (LBO) - A Sri Lankan state-run bank that has lent money to a controversial state airline will get a 400 million rupee injection from the Treasury which will strengthen its balance sheet, an official said.

Chairman of Lankaputhra Bank Sarath Silva said the Treasury will inject "about 400 million rupees" in settlement to advances given to Mihin Air, a loss-making state-budget airline that is eating up billions of rupees of people's money.
Critics have held up the airline as a high flying symbol of fiscal profligacy and the wastage people's money.

After losing 3.2 billion in a year of operations, the 2009 budget speech said 6,000 billion rupees of people's money would be set aside for the controversial airline.

Silva said the Treasury bailout is expected soon and would strengthen the bank after reporters questioned the bank's ability to manage or restructure two troubled finance companies of the Ceylinco group in light of bad lending such as to Mihin Air.

Under a Central Bank mandated bailout plan, Lankaputhra is also standing by to buy land from finance companies at 67 percent of their value.

Silva said the funds in settlement of Mihin Air advances would come as a 2-year government bond following a settlement reached with the Treasury, where some of the interest would be set off.

Sri Lanka's overstaffed state banks have been a big burden on the people, and the money now set aside for bailing out private firms – about 4.2 billion rupees so far including guarantees - pale into insignificance beside state bank bailouts.

In 1993 and 1996, about 50 billion rupees were injected to state banks through treasury bonds to make up for bad loans and politically directed lending including to state projects which could not repay the loans, like Mihin Air.

Lankaputhra Bank itself has been merged with another newly created state bank, SME Bank which sagged under its own bad loans shortly after it was created despite the expensive 50 billion rupee lesson, less than a decade earlier.

Banks like SME were created following election promises. Initially they were set-up without a membership to the country's credit information office, allowing 'blacklisted' borrowers to get loans.

Many ordinary people in Sri Lanka have no idea that any government spends money taken from taxing the people, inflation (printed money from the Central Bank) or through what is called 'generational theft' or borrowing through long term bonds which will burden the children of the current generation.

In Sri Lanka the government runs a deficit on the current account of the budget, indicating that the entire capital budget and a part of its day to day expenses are financed from debt.

Rupee may further fall

Expressing its concern over Sri Lanka’s depleting external reserve position, a report published by the Intelligence Unit of the Economist magazine (EIU) forecasts Sri Lankan rupee to depreciate 7.4 percent in 2009 and 3.2 percent in 2010 against the US dollar.

However in the case of a potential currency crash the EIU predicts the rupee to depreciate by 15 percent or more. Howard Nicholas, a Sri Lankan born economist from the Institute of Social Sciences (ISS) in The Hague, a few months back said Sri Lanka has to devalue its currency at least by 20 percent to survive.

If the forecast of 7.4 percent depreciation materialises in 2009, the rupee will hover around Rs.125 -130 ranges against the US dollar. However, according to Howard Nicholas the rupee should be depreciated at least to Rs.140 against the dollar, which is currently around Rs.113-115.

As a result of this depreciation the government’s increasingly large foreign-currency denominated debt would become more expensive to service, which would probably force the government to cut spending in other areas, most likely on infrastructure investment, the report points out.

This would, in turn, reduce imports (as most construction raw materials are imported), as well as the economy’s future productive potential. Private sector investment would also be hit as raw material imports become more expensive in local currency terms.

However, according to the report, Sri Lanka is unlikely to default its debt payments although fiscal spending will need to be cut down to offset the rising cost of servicing public debt. The Central Bank has been engaged in ‘sterilized intervention’ since the beginning of September last year by intervening in forex markets at the expense of external reserves, and printing money to cover liquidity shortages. This eventually pushed the country on the verge of a foreign exchange crisis. Sri Lanka’s external reserve position slumped to $ 1.5 billion, which is only enough for 1.5 months of imports in December 2008.

Given the very humble position of foreign reserves, the Central Bank sought the support of the IMF and currently the two institutions are negotiating a bail out package of $ 1.9 billion.

According to the report this IMF bailout package of US $1.9 billion is unlikely to demand tough conditions for lending, as Sri Lanka had relatively liberal trade and economic policies for an emerging economy.

The report also predicts the country’s GDP growth will slow to 3% in 2009, before accelerating again to 5.7% in 2010.
“The slowdown in 2009 will be largely caused by a fall in exports as demand withers in the crucial EU and US markets. If EU ends Sri Lanka’s access to preferential trade treatment in 2009 in response to human rights concerns, it could aggravate the downturn in exports. As international prices for many goods are likely to decline in 2009-10, inflation in Sri Lanka should fall to 9.9% in 2009 and 7.4% in 2010” the report points out.

Abt Constitutions, only when the country becomes independent, there will be constitution, courts of law, etc. In numerous countries, national service exist. A country-to-be can have national service without constitution. Stupid Asshole!

2.
[Its not like VP ran an election on any kind of platform that in some way legitimises forced conscription... ergo it is an arbitrary function the people have had no say in.]

TNA won a landslide in 2004 by just saying "LTTE are the sole-representatives of the Tamils". Of course, coolies of the singhalas like Douglas and others competed in 2004 and collectively got just 1 seat for their 7% votes in Jaffna when Jaffna was occupied and terrorized by the SLA barbarians.

Abt people having a say, you should go and ask Lasantha, Tissa, Vidyatharan (the list is endless).

3.
[If the majority of Tamils live in India why not work towards statehood in Tamil Nadu? If Tamil Nadu where to succeed from India would the problems in Sri Lanka miraculously disappear?]

Again and again demonstrating that u belong to modaya group!!

Have Tamils being slaughtered in India since independence as being done by singhala barbarians in SL? do you know the answer now y only Tamils in SL are asking for independent state even that was since late 70s. Tamils tolerated the atrocities of the singhala barbarians from 1948 to 1970s!! It took 30 years to convert the peace loving Tamils to behave just like singhala barbarians - not very easy, do you understand?

4.
[Extremism must be defeated and a willingness to negotiate every aspect of the problems must be open to discussion. Both sides are locking themselves into intractable positions that can only ensure further conflict and bloodshed.]

we can say any number times the same thing to modayas and it just does not get thro'. Do you know how many agreements before 1970 were torn by singhalas? Tamils were willing to accept them until 70s. Just a typical modaya!!

totally agree with the UN. UN has credible proof that the worker has been conscripted. The accusations against the SL army cannot be substantiated. so they refrain from commenting on that issue.

UN, ICRC, & other NGOs had enough evidence against the SLA when they were in Vanni. Now, the SLA does not even allow the evacauted civilians freedom-of-speech in Vavuniya. Y?

Gota said openly to BBC "We can bomb, shell hospitals". Need more evidence?

You should read the reports by HRW, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, etc.

We are at the midst of a great economic meltdown. Several of the so called developed countries have lost more than half of their net capitalization of stock market due to this economical tsunami at the blink of an eye.

While Trillion dollar economies of USA, U.K, Japan and India are under turmoil, one would wonder what would be the fate of the economy of the tiny South Asian nation Sri Lanka that is waging a genocidal war against its ethnic minority. It is unfortunate that calls for a permanent ceasefire by several nations including Canada, USA, UK and also the UN has fallen on deaf ears.

We are all aware that a war has to be fought not just at the battlefront but also from political and economic fronts. The current Sri Lankan civil war referred by some as the “Eelam war IV” is also being fought from all these fronts. Considering the large population of the Tamils living in countries like USA, Canada, Europe, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia - the Tamils who are collectively campaigning for an immediate ceasefire, have the numeric advantage over the Sinhala masses that back the war mongering regime of the Rajapakse brothers.

If only those who are in favor of freedom and human dignity can launch a campaign in collaboration with the native population of the respective countries they live in - to boycott “Made in Sri Lanka” products, a strong message – one that cannot be tainted negatively or brushed aside easily, can be sent to the Sri Lankan regime and possibly force an end to this war.

Stop Travelling in Sri Lankan Air Lines
Say No Sri Lankan Tea / Coffee
Promote Peace by Boycotting Sri Lankan Products

One needs to put his/her sharp mind to work in this “economical battlefront”. Tourism, Tea, Coffee, Garments and Overseas money transfer are some major revenue sources for Sri Lanka. It is this revenue that is boosting the confidence of the Sri Lankan regime to continue the war. Unless it is necessary to support their relatives back in Sri Lanka, one must seize their money transfers to Sri Lanka. Also if possible they should liquidate or pull back their investments from Sri Lanka. This can be done with little effort by every individual.

Working collectively with other freedom loving members they can take the list of travels agencies that sell tour packages to Sri Lanka and request these agencies “Not to be a part to the genocide” by presenting relevant facts thorough emails and holding peaceful rallies in front of their offices.

In your day to day life – when you come across products made in Sri Lanka - either a Tea bag in the grocery store or Garments in the Malls, every individual has the historical responsibility to boycott that product and also communicate not only to Tamils, but to every fellow human on where the money is going. The business’s that deal with Sri Lankan products need to be informed about the “loss of life” that is being caused with every transaction of these products.

In an informed and responsible society, everyone is a freedom fighter. Let us all realize how the strength of 1 million+ strong Tamil Diaspora can multiply when they start working with all the freedom loving citizens of the country they live in.

As Bill Clinton used the phrase “It’s the economy, stupid” to defeat George H.W. Bush during the 1992 presidential campaign, although Papa Bush was considered unbeatable because of the foreign policy developments such as the end of the Cold War and the Persian Gulf War. Let us all use the phrase “It’s the economy, Ladies & Gentlemen” to knock down the war mongering Sri Lankan regime from its pursuit of this genocidal war.

When you fight a cause as an underdog it is critical that you hold the moral high ground. That's the only way you can gain world's respect and ultimately win your goal. Unfortunately Thanthai Chelva was the only leader who had a real vision for our people and since his death we've been on a path of self destruction the logical end of which is hitting us now.
The struggle for freedom is a long and difficult one. End objective does not justify any means. Since the hijacking of the Tamil cause by LTTE we've been in an undue rush to win our 'freedom' and we assumed any means would do.
When LTTE killed our own people who never held a gun but only had ideological differences LTTE proved its' ideological bankruptcy. Posts like this demonstrate this bankruptcy of the so called sole representatives of Tamil people to the whole world and that's why I strongly suspect that Badri is a SLA agent. If not he's extremely callous and stupid, but that wouldn't surprise me either since a significant number of diaspora fall into that category (silent majority do not however).
Badri or other member of the diaspora may disagree, but if you resort to mere name calling it'll only provide further proof of our path of self destruction where absolute obedience to the LTTE is expected regardless of how wrong it is. BTW, I don't need any comments/encouragements from Singalams here either as most of them appear to be pure racists just like a number of our own diaspora who post here.

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: Sri Lanka will not accept any conditions on emergency loans it receives from the International Monetary Fund, the island's president was quoted Tuesday as saying.

Sri Lanka announced earlier this month that it had become the latest nation to seek help from the IMF to help it through the global economic downturn.

"We are absolutely clear. We will not pawn or sell our motherland to obtain any monetary aid from the IMF or any other international agency," President Mahinda Rajapaksa was quoted as saying by the state-controlled Daily News newspaper.

"Neither will we bow down to any conditions or transform our land to a colony," he was quoted as telling a meeting new government employees.

The government is currently in talks with the IMF about an emergency loan worth $1.9 billion.

Goldman offers loans to stretched employees
In the past, the IMF has required countries to take steps such as cutting public spending and raising interest rates in exchange for emergency funds. The IMF has closed its Sri Lankan office and IMF officials were not immediately reachable.

The island's central bank has said an emergency loan would help the country weather the global financial crunch and pay for reconstruction in the north and east, where the army says it is close to defeating Tamil Tiger rebels.

It says the injection would also encourage other "development partners" to step forward with assistance and would boost investors' confidence in the island nation's economy.

The government has softened its opposition to an IMF bailout as slowing exports and the costs of the 25-year civil war weigh on the economy. Slowing tea and textile exports have depleted the country's foreign currency reserves and undermined the Sri Lankan rupee.

IMF support would "supplement the government's efforts to stabilize the external sector performance of the country, and enable the country to face the times ahead with greater confidence and certainty," the bank said in a statement earlier this month.

The central bank says it expected the government to finish the IMF negotiations by the end of March, and that significant part of the loan would be released soon after that.

Yes, he was. But his approach completely failed aganist the Singhala thugs in terms of peace-apcts torn to pieces and getting beaten on gale face, etc. So, in SL, he was a total failure.

The alternative was to fgiht. By now, we'd have won, except the world standing againt Tamils due to their geoplotical games. It requires the whole world to get together to fight the Tamils. It shows the strength.

Tamils taking higher moral ground does not matter here becoz the whoel world is doing a political game and happy to ignore whatever the SLA is doing!!

BTW, do you know that the Anada sangaree was totally againt Selva and contested elections against Selva? Anada sangaree was born to be a traitor.

I do not wish to get in to an arguement with my fellow diaspora brothers here. But it seems like we get excited whenever international community criticises GOSL. In fact we actively lobby the international community. This implies that we haven't resolved that the IC is useless and not going to support us anyway and as a matter of fact we consider the support IC to be an important precondition if ever a Tamil state is to be formed.
Given this line of thought (that the IC infact is important), LTTE have done a great deal of harm to the Tamil cause than any good. They have basically proven that they are no better than GOSL and probably even worse. (By forcing the Tamils to toe the line that they are our sole representatives, IC is also given the clear message that there are no better alternatives either.) It is the sad truth that is re-revealed by this UN worker saga.
With this sort of conduct can we ever think that a Tamil state will emerge? Even if it does will it be any better than the repressive Singalam state (other than the fact that it'll be our own people who will repress us)?

Some of the powerful IC members are just playing political games. Irrespective of this, Tamils should work hard at it.

It is strange that IC thinks Karuna and Pillayan are very good (yesterday they kidnaped and killed a 6 years old child and have 30+ kidnaps under their names) becoz these two guys fit well with their political games. SL-gernment is equally bad (actually worse), but IC is happy to work with the SL-government for their own benefits.

First we get out the singhala barbarians (60+ years more than enough) and after that we'll decide how it goes.

300k Tamils lived in Vanni with a lack of food and medicine, etc. for 10-15 years. not many wanted to move to Jaffna until the Genocidal army started marching in and created all the disaster, i.e. if this genocidal army did not invade, people there would be happy to stay there instead of gonig under the SLA barbarians either in Jaffna or south.

Over the last few months it is clear the International community is not going to do anything to help the Eelam Tamils. The only people who can help the Eelam Tamils are the Tamils in Tamil Nadu. Unfortunately at present they aren't interested. The mistake of Eelam Tamils is they have been trying to convince countries like Norway and Japan, who are just opportunists, instead of trying to convince their own people in Tamil Nadu. You can get hundreds of thousands of people to protest in Toronto, UK, and Geneva, but no one in Tamil Nadu, where there are 60 million Tamils.

Mahinda(n) said...

People in TN are highly constraned by the situatino there. In particular, politicians of the major tamil parties only interested in winning seats at every election. Only minor parties are shouting as though they were genuine. how genuine they're will be seen only if they get elected. My view is as soon as minor parties get elected, they'll behave pretty much like major parties.

So, only one person in our history of freedom struggle was saying that "we'll have to do it ourselves" how true it is!!

But the unexpected factor now is the immoral behaviour of the IC for their own gains at the expense of 100s of thousands of Tamils lives!!

So, we'll still have to work at it.

If we look back at the histories of genocides, UNFORTUNATELY the world never predicted any genocide and acted before it happened. SADLY, always, the world wanted to see the genocide happening at full strength before taking any action ... it applies to Tamils now :-(

Roy Muller said...

@ Badri

You can discount Tamilnadu Tamils, they have lost their identity.

What the diaspora failed, was instead of working and keeping it within their community (Tamils) they should have expanded and cultivating others outside of their community.

The protests in Toronto or Melbourne etc, is 99% made up of Tamils, where are the other non Tamil Canadians or Australians. Many whites will take up the cause like Tibet if the diaspora had reached out and worked on them all this years.

The LTTE has been calling for a ceasefire for more than a month, yet the EU commissioner still pretends the LTTE is not agreeing to a ceasefire.

The facts are clear. The international community wants to put an end to the Tamil freedom struggle, so they continuously misrepresent the position of the LTTE, and pass all blame onto the LTTE.

So they have to speak for LTTe and even most of the tamil movies have a tiger animation before the movie or some animations like throwing the sword of the Sri Lankan lion (which is in the flag) to a Kovil or a temple. Most of the thamilnadu film industry is sacred of LTTe. Answer me this mate why isn't world renowned AR Rahman doesnt speak for LTTe..

Miss Information is talking non-sense like a modaya, just a few points:

1.
"Abt Constitutions, only when the country becomes independent, there will be constitution, courts of law, etc. In numerous countries, national service exist. A country-to-be can have national service without constitution. Stupid Asshole!"

Name calling is so childish, please refrain and while you are at it please explain your trite statement. There were courts in Killi when I was there but no constitution. Under what law did those courts operate, who appointed the Judges and under what legal mechanisms were the rights of the accused guaranteed?

2.
[Its not like VP ran an election on any kind of platform that in some way legitimises forced conscription... ergo it is an arbitrary function the people have had no say in.]

"TNA won a landslide in 2004 by just saying "LTTE are the sole-representatives of the Tamils". Of course, coolies of the singhalas like Douglas and others competed in 2004 and collectively got just 1 seat for their 7% votes in Jaffna when Jaffna was occupied and terrorized by the SLA barbarians."

The TNA are not now and were not then under the legal leadership of VP. My point stands and you are looking a little lost in the discussion here.

3.
[If the majority of Tamils live in India why not work towards statehood in Tamil Nadu? If Tamil Nadu where to succeed from India would the problems in Sri Lanka miraculously disappear?]

"Again and again demonstrating that u belong to modaya group!!"

Now we are treading on the absurd and plain just silly... is that the best you have to offer?

" It took 30 years to convert the peace loving Tamils to behave just like singhala barbarians - not very easy, do you understand?"

So you are saying the Tamils of Sri Lanka are now barbarians? You need to do some work on your reasoning as it is lost on me and others I am sure.

4.
[Extremism must be defeated and a willingness to negotiate every aspect of the problems must be open to discussion. Both sides are locking themselves into intractable positions that can only ensure further conflict and bloodshed.]

"we can say any number times the same thing to modayas and it just does not get thro'. Do you know how many agreements before 1970 were torn by singhalas? Tamils were willing to accept them until 70s. Just a typical modaya!!"

So you are arguing that war is the only answer now... so if the GoSL wants to fight the Tamils they are dealing with self-admitted barbarians not interested in negotiated peace... you words do little justice to the many Tamils who show better judgement than you.

And please tell me again why the LTTE could not draught a constitution? They could tax people, drag them in front of courts, send them to war but not write a constitution?

Oh my...

However... the GoSL are also fine with war criminals if they suit their purpose. Karuna should have been indicted for them while in Britain and sent to the Hague for prosecution. Both sides have much to be ashamed of and both are awash in innocent blood.

Miss Information lives up to its user name modaya character!!

I'm happy to observe that many of my comments were invisible to this modaya.

1.
this modaya goes around constitution. these are what Tamils need now: Immediately people i Vanni need medicine, food, etc. which blocked by the inhumane barbarian authority for 1-2 months. Then Tamils should get out of the terror grip of the singhala barbarians. after that Tamils will self-determine their future without the singhala modayas. so, in the first place Tamils do not want you to worry about it. If u really worry about, look at my order of importance above (i'm a tamil).

if u cannot grasp the above, then i've another suggestion. Get the UN to organize a referendum for Tamils in SL to find out what they want, that is without the singhala barbarian soldiers around. You'll find 90%+ of Tamils want what i listed above in the same order, i.e. after food and medicine for today's need, the next is self-determination to get out of singhala state terrorism.

even without full state status, people in Vanni had a human right commission run by Father Karunaratnam who was murdered by the same SLA-DPU.

2.
[The TNA are not now and were not then under the legal leadership of VP. My point stands and you are looking a little lost in the discussion here.]

VP does not respect the so-called 'law' of the occupying forces "not now and not then also". In fact, no Tamil has any respect given the level of aductions, killings, etc. VP also wanted to prove the level of support for VP. The best solution would be to declare NUMEROUS times by the TNA that "LTTE are the sole representative of the Tamils and we're representing them in the polls". This proves the point without giving any sort of recognition to the crabby GOSL's system. (I understand that these r a bit too much for you to grasp ...). TNA scores 23 out of 24 tamil seats to prove the point beyond any doubt!!

3.
[So you are saying the Tamils of Sri Lanka are now barbarians? You need to do some work on your reasoning as it is lost on me and others I am sure.]

Tamils have always been peace-loving people. For them any level of violence is "barbarianism".

On the other hand, for singhalas, violence is a part and parcel of their life style, e.g. blooding themselves in 1956, 58, 1972-JVP-I, 1977, 1983, 1989-JVP-II, Marwinela slaughter of Muslims, ....

Trning to violence to counter this barbarians in itself is disgusting for tamils but singhalas managed to succeed after 30+years their hard work!! understood now?

4.
[you words do little justice to the many Tamils who show better judgement than you.]

these are paid coolies who could get less than 10% of the Tamil votes in 2004!!

[And please tell me again why the LTTE could not draught a constitution? They could tax people, drag them in front of courts, send them to war but not write a constitution?]

Again abt constitution ... go and look at point 1 to see what Tamils need now. As u r so concerned abot Tamils, can't u guess what they need now? of course a barbarian modaya cannot ...

name calling is must when talking to real modaya!!

No one can say "mandatory national service" in Isreal, Sweden and many other countries as "forced conscription". The countries with "mandatory national service" do not exempt anyone becoz the person is employed by the UN. Only exemption is on medical ground.

Wrong again. Many different countries have different exemptions and none allow forced conscription of children... which is exactly what Badrinath mentioned. Let us be clear again... he said it was perfectly fine for the LTTE to forcibly conscript sixteen year old children.

That is a war crime. He, not I, is saying the LTTE are war criminals. You might want to read his poorly chosen words again.
