Rumors the Sri Lankan military used chemical weapons

There have been rumors going around that the Sri Lankan military used chemical weapons yesterday in its battle against the LTTE. We do not have proof one way or the other, but two odd points cast doubts on the government. For the first time ever, pictures of the dead LTTE bodies have unusual burn wounds and skin peeling off in many places. In the past the bodies have never had such wounds. Secondly, the Sri Lankan military has blurred out parts of the dead fighters' bodies, most commonly the face (but many faces are also left unblured, so they are not trying to hide the person's identity). There are no signs of blood in the blured out area, so the only logical conclusion is that they want to hide the oddly peeled and burnt skin, which would be most visible on the exposed face. Below are a few examples of these wounds:

In the photo above, why is his chest blurred out? There is no sign of a bullet wound, but you can see a rash or burn around his neck and the blurred area, plus his skin is peeling off on many places.

Why did the Sri Lankan government blur out the faces in the top row, but not the faces below:

What are they trying to hide by blurring out the faces? There are no signs of bullet wounds there, and they obviously aren't hiding their identity, because other faces are being shown. It is possible they are trying to cover up signs of peeling and burnt skin, which would be most visible on the exposed faces.

* India did not call for ceasefire, Sri Lanka government says
Saturday, April 25, 2009, 12:40 GMT, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.
Apr 25, Colombo: Sri Lankan government today said that the government of India did not call for a ceasefire during the talks with President Mahinda Rajapaksa held yesterday.

President's Secretary Lalith Weeratunga confirmed to the media that the discussion between Indian National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan, External Affairs Secretary Shivshankar Menon and President Mahinda Rajapaksa focused only the provision of relief for civilians fleeing the 'no fire zone' in Mullaitivu.

"Both parties did not discuss anything about a ceasefire or halting military operations in the North," he added.

Meanwhile, the Indian External Affairs Ministry announced that the emissaries had expressed concerns over the evolving situation in the North during the talks, especially over the casualties among Tamil civilians as a result of ongoing operations.

India Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon and its National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan met with Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday at the Temple Trees to discuss the catastrophic situation in the Northeast of the country.

Colombo, April 25 (IANS) Sri Lanka has vowed not to bow to any pressure to stop the military offensive against the Tamil Tigers until all civilians escape the now shrunken rebel territory, it was reported Saturday.
“The government is not giving into various pressures exerted on it to stop the humanitarian operation or declare a ceasefire and it will go on till the last civilian is freed from LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) clutches,” Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said in remarks published in the state-run Daily News.

Rajapaksa, a younger brother of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, did not say who had been exerting pressure on Sri Lanka.

Asked if the two envoys of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh who met the president Friday called for a ceasefire, the defence secretary said there was no such call and India did not put any pressure on Sri Lanka.

India’s National Security Advisor M.K. Narayanan and Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon met the president and his confidants for about 90 minutes.

After returning to New Delhi, Narayanan said that President Rajapaksa was “receptive” to India’s concerns, especially over the civilian suffering caused by the fighting in the north and the exodus of Tamils from the war zone.

this is a counter threat to MR decision not to listen to the major international players.

the west is all too familliar with these type of struggle, where enminity lingers for hundreds if not thousands of years.

the fear for the west is further radicalization of tamil population around the world, leading to a destablization of both india and sri lanka. they alreadying reaping the problem from muslim radicalization. they also know very well ltte will not be finished if and when the `safe zone' is captured.

hence MR's regime is faced with a stark choice from the IC, further military confrontation and resultant partitioning of sri lanka or peace through a negiotated co-existence based settlement.....

2ND LEAD
Military end to conflict will end hope for a unified Sri Lanka - Obama White House
[TamilNet, Saturday, 25 April 2009, 12:02 GMT]
In a statement issued Friday the Obama White House called on "both sides to stop fighting immediately," and "the Government of Sri Lanka to stop shelling the safe zone and blocking international aid groups and media from accessing those civilians who have managed to escape," adding both sides should "strictly adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law. We are very concerned about reports of violations, and take these allegations very seriously." The White House cautioned that, "[i]t would compound the current tragedy if the military end of the conflict only breeds further enmity and ends hopes for reconciliation and a unified Sri Lanka in the future."

Full text of the White House statement on continuing conflict in Sri Lanka follows:

The United States is deeply concerned about the plight of innocent civilians caught up in the conflict between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil Tigers, and the mounting death toll. We call on both sides to stop fighting immediately and allow civilians to safely leave the combat zone.

We call upon the Government of Sri Lanka to stop shelling the "safe zone" and blocking international aid groups and media from accessing those civilians who have managed to escape. International aid workers should have access to all sites where internally displaced persons are being registered and sheltered. The United States is working with international partners to attempt to care for those civilians who can be reached.

We call on both sides to strictly adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law. We are very concerned about reports of violations, and take these allegations very seriously.

It would compound the current tragedy if the military end of the conflict only breeds further enmity and ends hopes for reconciliation and a unified Sri Lanka in the future.

NY TimesCOLOMBO, Sri Lanka — In more peaceful times, the narrow, sandy strip of land that hugs the coast near the northeastern town of Mullaittivu might attract tourists who explore so many other parts of Sri Lanka.

Wounded civilians are dying at a hospital in Vavuniya.

Now as the country’s long-running civil war appears to be reaching its climax, a picture of desperation is emerging from that sandy spit along the Indian Ocean, where rebels from Sri Lanka’s ethnic Tamil minority are making their last stand.

Stories of suffering have streamed out along with the tens of thousands of civilians who were able to break through the front lines last week and straggle into overwhelmed hospitals and refugee camps.

Tim Pruchnic, an American surgeon working at a hospital in the northern town of Vavuniya, said in a telephone interview that many of his patients were arriving so weak that they were dying after operations that would not normally be life threatening.

Dr. Pruchnic, who works with the aid group Doctors Without Borders, said that after months in the combat zone, people were arriving malnourished and dehydrated.

Paul McMaster, who also works with Doctors Without Borders at the hospital, said some of his patients were losing their limbs to amputations because their injuries — often from shrapnel, gunshots and land mines — had gone untreated for too long and had become infected.

Civilians have been trying for weeks and sometimes months to leave the ever-shrinking area of fighting between the government and the rebels in the north, but aid agencies and the Sri Lankan military have said that the rebels have been holding them as human shields, building berms that made it harder for the soldiers to get in, and for civilians to get out. The rebels have also forced some civilians to take up arms, according to the United Nations. The government, meanwhile, has ignored appeals from the United Nations, India, the United States and other nations for a cease-fire until all the civilians are out of the combat zone.

Last week, the government was able to explode one of the rebels’ berms, allowing about 100,000 civilians to flee.

“Even in ordinary times a population of 100,000 would be a huge burden on the health system,” said Gordon Weiss, the United Nations spokesman in Colombo. “But these are people who have had three months with very little food, they’ve traveled across mine fields and endured months of shelling and small-arms fire. It’s no surprise that the hospitals are overwhelmed.”

Some of those civilians who fled ended up in the hospital at Vavuniya, where doctors say the maximum capacity is normally 600 patients. Last week, 1,700 people were crowded into its wards. Dr. Pruchnic said many of the patients, including children, arrived without their families.

“There are kids here who have had amputations, their mother and father are gone — their whole family is missing,” he said. “Yet they can still smile. I’m amazed at their resilience.”

On Saturday, the Tigers said that tens of thousands of civilians faced “imminent” starvation, according to a Web site that serves as their mouthpiece, Tamilnet.

The International Committee of the Red Cross, which evacuated hundred of wounded civilians by fishing boats used as ferries in recent days, has also warned of the lack of food and an “acute shortage of vital medical supplies.”

The government’s advance has been slowed somewhat by the rebels’ earthen barriers, according to Brig. Gen. Udaya Nanayakkara, a military spokesman. He said the military was now moving forward only several yards a day as troops cleared mines and booby traps from their path.

The rebels are equipped with at least one tank, artillery pieces, armor-plated vehicles, assault weapons and satellite phones, he said.

Conditions in the rebel-held territory are difficult to verify because journalists and aid workers have been barred from the combat zone.

The general also said the mingling of rebels among civilians had complicated the military’s advance.

Among the nearly 200,000 people who have escaped rebel-held territory since January, about 3,000 were determined to be fighters disguised as civilians, General Nanayakkara said.

He estimates there are 500 fighters left in rebel-held territory, which has been whittled down to about 1.5 square miles.

“The moment we take all the trapped civilians out it’s just a matter of 48 hours to get rid of them,” General Nanayakkara said of the rebels.

Since late January, when rebel-held territory shrank significantly, about 13,500 civilians have been killed and 14,000 wounded, according to a United Nations tally.

The United Nations estimates there are 50,000 to 100,000 civilians stuck on the sandy spit of land. The military says it is more like 15,000 people.

Whatever the number, the frailest among them may never make it out alive.

Patients arriving at Vavuniya hospital are usually young or middle-aged: Dr. Pruchnic says he has seen few elderly people.

“The old don’t seem to make it here,” he said. “There’s a few. But I think they’re mostly dying on the way.”

"The National Post's Stewart Bell will be reporting from Sri Lanka as the civil war draws to a close. Today, he examines the life of the notorious leader who for years has led the Tamil Tigers through bloodshed and battle.

The guerrilla leader Velupillai Prabhakaran has avoided death and capture for more than three decades as he wages South Asia's longest-running civil war.

But his luck is running out.

As supreme commander of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Prabhakaran once presided over a rebel mini-state more than twice the size of the Palestinian Territories.

But he lost it with startling speed to the Sri Lankan armed forces, who won it back town by town and have now cornered Prabhakaran and the remnants of his rebel force.

On Friday, Brigadier Shavendra Silva said Prabhakaran was preparing to make a final stand in the strip of jungle still held by the Tamil Tigers."

Lalith Kuruwita said...

On Monday morning , civilians began to pour into the military controlled areas after the security forces punctured a hole in the 12 km long trench cum earth bund of the guerrillas. The breach of the earth bund, well fortified with bunkers built at every 50 meter distance and fitted with medium calibre weapons was a tactical military manoeuvre in its own right.
The cornerstone of the military success was accurate intelligence collected through extensive reconnaissance missions. For weeks, small teams of Special Forces and Commandos conducted surveillance and reconnaissance missions on the 12 km long earth bund constructed by the guerrillas to fend off military advance. A four- man- team of commandos monitored day and night the build- up of the guerilla earth bund . A lone commando, Lance Cpl Gunasekara of the second commando regiment sneaked into the guerrilla held area disguising as a Tamil civilian. Upon his return, during his debriefing he prophesied the exodus when the troops breached the earth bund. The Third Special Force Battalion well versed with Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRRP) operations were also deployed in the reconnaissance mission. Based on intelligence provided by the recon team, troops built a dummy of the LTTE’s trench cum earth bund out of an earth bund captured during a previous operation and conducted extensive rehearsals before the final mission.

Assault

An hour before midnight of Sunday, troops were poised for the assault. A commando regiment was assigned to Puthumathalan and the Special Forces were deployed in Ampalawan Pokkalan, facing the Nanthikandal lagoon. In between the 9 Gamunu Watch and 11 Ceylon Light Infantry battalions were deployed. Under the cover of darkness, troops crossed the lagoon and waited till their comrades took positions. At 2 am, they received the go ahead.
Heavy fighting flared up as the troops went hunting for the guerrillas well entrenched in their bunkers. The battle continued for 4 hours as Tigers dislodged from the bunkers put up stiff resistance. By sunrise, civilians in the thousands began to head towards the security forces. Aerial footage taken by an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle showed Tigers firing at fleeing civilians with a medium calibre weapon. Young Special Forces officer Captain Ajith Gamage, who led the Alpha team fell dead when he was shot by a Tiger cadre mingling with civilians. Four of his comrades who plunged to rescue the young officer met with the same fate. Yet, even in death, they saw a camaraderie which lasted through the military missions in Mavil Aru, Sampur to Vakarai. The valour of the Alpha team deserves a special place in the history of the military operation in the fourth Eelam War. They led the military mission to capture the sluice gates of the Mavil Aru. Capt. Ajith Gamage was the then acting OIC of the Alpha team. They trekked a mine filled river bank in the military mission to capture Sampur and later played a pivotal role in the military mission to liberate Vakarai.
On the fateful Monday morning, having captured the earth bund, they were pushing deeper into Tiger territory in order to neutralize Tiger cadres firing at civilians. Later in the day, two Tiger cadres wearing explosive jackets exploded themselves killing 17 civilians. As of yesterday, 110,000 civilians have entered government controlled areas since Monday. This brings the total number of civilians in the IDP centres to 200,000.
An estimated 15,000-20,000 people are still held by the LTTE in the south of Vellamullaivaikkal. Numbers are contentious; however, some military sources yesterday put the figures as high as 50,000. Some weeks back, two local UN workers fleeing the guerrilla held pocket told the military official that there are about 150,000 held in the area. Their estimates appeared to be close to the truth against government figures which earlier put the numbers at 75,000.
Late last week, the 55 Division which advanced southwards from Puthumathalan linked with the 58 Division. As of yesterday, Commandos and Special Forces have entered a 10 km2 area of Vallaimadam, the last remnant of the guerrilla held territory. Prabhakaran is still holed up there, according to the former LTTE media spokesman Daya Master who surrendered to the security forces along with Geroge Master, who was the translator of the former political commissar of the LTTE, the late Thamilselvan. Military intelligence sources told this newspaper that briefings by surrendered Tiger cadres tallies with this information. One cadre had confessed seeing Charles Anthony, the son of the Tiger chieftain early this week.

300 hardcore Tiger cadres

A military official citing intelligence sources said that Prabhakaran is believed to be left with an estimated 300 hardcore Tiger cadres. According to intelligence briefings two weeks back, an estimated 2000 members of Makkal Paddai had been forced into combat by the LTTE. How many of them have fled to government controlled area with the exodus of civilians is not known. Military officials claim the final phase of the military operation has been complicated by the heavy concentration of civilians in a narrow stretch of land. The troops have been instructed to refrain from using indirect fire. How the military copes with this challenge would decide the nature of peace as well as the Tamil perspective in the post LTTE context.
The government is grappling with new challenges in other spheres as well, most notably the provision of immediate housing and basic amenities for IDPs. The government last week appointed Major General G.S. Chandrasiri as the Competent Authority to oversee IDP Centres. The United Nations have requested access to the registration and screening points of civilians, which the government had not yet granted.
There are other emerging concerns. Military sources say about two thousand, Tiger cadres had been identified among civilians who entered the government controlled area, of them seven hundred cadres have been identified during the first two days. Among them there are 15 senior cadres in the rank of Lt Colonel. Many of them have surrendered, while the rest have been identified while they tried to sneak into government controlled areas amidst civilians.

Basic warfare

Thousands of civilians had been trained in basic warfare by the LTTE in an effort to induct them as members of the civil militia, Makkal Paddai. Makkal Paddai was more to do with rhetoric than any form of effective civilian military mobilization in the latter part of the Eelam war. The members of Makkal Paddai who were deployed in the bunkers to supplement the shortage of regular Tiger combatants had their life expectancy measured by days, if not hours.
However, while these members may not be the ideal in a high intensity war, the same group can be effective in a low intensity war. It was the Makkal Paddai members who were instrumental in a series of claymore mine explosions which rocked the Jaffna peninsula in the immediate aftermath of the election of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Basic military training was made compulsory by the LTTE in its heartland, Therefore, there was no escape from it. However, perhaps most important is the degree of radicalization of cadres. That stands true especially for 2000 Tiger cadres who are identified among civilians. Surrender equals betrayal in the LTTE’s code of conduct, but, it is not always; Kennedy, the hardcore Tiger guerrilla who surrendered in an abortive mission to blow up aircraft at the Pallali Military Headquarters in the late 90s was handed over to the LTTE in a prisoner swap during the peace process. He later went to head a crack LTTE team , which was sent to the East after the split of the former Eastern Commander Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna the current Minister of National reconciliation of Rajapaksa government. Kennedy was later assigned the security of the LTTE’s air assets.
Therefore, the surrender does not necessarily translate into a break-up of the past loyalties to the LTTE. This poises the challenge of an effective rehabilitation program. However, not every such effort did succeed in the past. Washington Post recently reported quoting CIA officials that 12 per cent of former suspects held at the Guantanamo Bay detention centre went back to Al Qaida, including the current second in command of al Qaida’s Yemeni Branch. These are the problems the government would have to grapple with in the immediate future. Meanwhile, The Hindu newspaper yesterday quoted India’s National Security Adviser M.K. Narayanan as saying that President Rajapaksa was “receptive” to Indian concerns about the civilians trapped in the no-fire zone. He was refering to his visit to Colombo. In a statement, Mr. Narayanan said they had conveyed concerns of the Government of India at the evolving situation in the north, especially over the casualties among Tamil civilians as a result of the ongoing operations.
“We also expressed the Government of India’s concerns about the humanitarian situation as a result of nearly hundred thousand Tamil civilians coming out of the conflict zone since early this week. The President of Sri Lanka was receptive to our concerns. We are hopeful of a positive outcome,” The Hindu reported.
As conventional combat was coming to an end, Sri Lanka must invest heavily to transform military gains into a sustainable peace. That requires a concerted program aimed at winning the hearts and minds of the Tamil people through redressing the root course of conflict.
The centre of gravity of insurgencies/terrorism is the people. Unless they are won over, hard gained military gains would be doomed.

VP could be in Mullaitivu or Amparai jungles but NFZ. If you've listen to pulikalinkural before- lets say, 3 weeks back-, you would have heard artillery sounds in the background but not now. It seems they have moved into safe place. If the LTTE leadership can survive this onslaught from SLA, LTTE can become what it was before in short time.

tn thamilz said...

Bhairav, I read about LTTE since I got access to internet (which is 12-15 years back) and even before that I used to read about them in the newspaper in TN (even though the amount of details are limited). One thing I am sure about LTTE is, the leadership is not as stupid as most analyst think about them now ("end is near.. blah blah.." etc). They have been cornered few times before but they were able to break out of it. This time, they had ample time to understand and analyze singalaya's move. They are not going to sit inside their bunker and wait for the army to come and get them. I don't have a slightest doubt that they already reached a safe location. My question was about the news "leaked" about their presence in the zone and the recent singalalaya's "got them" claims..

In 1989 - LTTE was at it's lowest strength when the IPKF left but bounced back and captured Jaffna after IPKF left. At that time, LTTE didn't have this much international infrastructure.

In 1996-7 - LTTE lost Jaffna and most thought LTTE is done (just like today) but they launched surprise attack on singala modaya's and captured 70% of tamil land in 4 years. This was achieved even without the support of TN tamils.

In 2009 - They got pretty good international infrastructure, huge support from TN and most of the diaspora tamils also united. From singalaya side, there are 2 major strength. 1. Huge army 2. Sonia Gandhi and her clowns. This huge army cannot be maintained for long (once the "war is over") and in about 20 days we will know the fate of Sonia's government. For LTTE to come back, it need atleast 6 months to reorganize etc.. Let us wait and see..

Bhairav said...

[For LTTE to come back, it need atleast 6 months to reorganize etc.. Let us wait and see..]

I would say it will take another year or so for the rebuilding process. LTTE may have lost its military edge now but politically they have reached the great milestone - who would have thought they will get the full approval of TN people whom I consider would be the X-FACTOR in coming years. This war has touched all corners of Tamil lives, for example, my sister came to Canada at age of 8 and had not much knowledge of Tamil struggles. But now I often hear from her that she wants to join LTTE, well, this is coming from a woman who has a very successful career- holding a management position in govern sector- and lead a good social life. Tamils are just furious all over the world that will make LTTE alive and kicking in coming years.

Sorry that Bhairav didn't give much of an answer. Thalaivar is caught in a bit of a pickle because he doesn't want to be seen as a coward who ran away- even Bhairav had earlier been critical of the LTTE believing that Thalaivar would run. Thalaivar also has decided that he doesn't want to associate with his supporters outside of SL who were too scared to fight for Tamileelam. Thus the only option is to remain and get killed.

I have visited Sri Sri Ravishankar's ashram couple of times though I'm not a follower. I have heard him speak about the Tamil issue often in the past two years. I had a slight doubt in my mind that probably he is aiming at the huge population of diaspora. Because all these godmen love foreign disciples, you know for what.

But oflate his bold statements openly critisizing Indian government for failing to help the Tamils, startled me.

I do not understand how the srilankan government allowed him to visit vauunia camps.

Now on his return, he has talked to Jayalalitha and fully converted her to the Eelam cause.

Inspite of all her drawbacks, Jayalalitha's support will be a big boost for the Eelam cause, because once she is convinced about something, she will adamantly stick to it.

BJP is also making the right noises about the Eelam issue.

Once Tiger's manage to regroup and start hitting back, they will have enough backing from Tamilnadu and may be also from India. If Tamilnadu is open to them, that itself will help a lot logistically.

International opinion is also emerging favourably.

Politically things are moving on the right direction. Militarily, it may take an year or two to make the turnaround.

If India starts engaging actively, no other power will bother to counter it seriously. Because India has close proximity to Srilanka which china and Pakistan do not have.

Militarily it will be very cumbersome to come all the way and engage that too confronting India. For srilanka's sake they may no do so except making a big hue and cry verbally.

And India need not have to engage even directly. There are many covert ways to create trouble to the regime which they have done in the past.

Only Tamilnadu should put enough pressure on the centre and things will start moving.

We should make Rajapakse's pay for their sins in all possible ways.

Dear Wijayapala,

Please permit me to inform you. There are tenths of Diaspora Tamil youths are fasting since two weeks, and Param in England is in his 20th day. They are fighting in their way to get “free Tamileelam” and their people .

Let me ask you a question. Will you be able to pass a simple meal a day as brave patriot to help those Singhalese mothers in Sri Lanka whose soldier sons are killed or MIA in the War ? I read that these mothers are not looked after by the GOSL.

Fasting in another country is not what LTTE needed, That can be done by even OLD men what they needed was to have fighters to fight the SLA, Since SLA forces were replensihed with young sinhalese blood, what does the young despora doo they lie down in comfortable bed and sleep, knowing that no matter what happens there is NO MORTAL DANGER. The western goverments will not let them die.

This is clear from the back and forth support by both Jayalalitha and Karunanidhi. Changing the tune as and when it is profitable for them.

Tigers at bay

Sunday, April 26, 2009

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, one of the world's most violent terrorist outfits, are surrounded in northern Sri Lanka and about to be destroyed - but Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and European self-styled peacemakers are getting in the way of victory. The meddlers should let Colombo finish off this menace.

In desperation, the Tamil Tigers are using tens of thousands of locals as human shields. The Sri Lankan government declared a cease-fire and called on the Tigers to release their hostages, but unmanned-aerial-vehicle video footage shows the terrorists holding masses of innocents at gunpoint, refusing them freedom. Last week, Mrs. Clinton played into the hands of the terrorists by blaming the Sri Lankan government for the crisis. "The entire world is very disappointed" that they were "causing such untold suffering," she said.

Foreign governments and aid organizations are calling on Colombo to cease operations, fearing that further action will lead to a humanitarian calamity. Norwegian Environment Minister Eric Solheim has been the point man in trying to negotiate a new truce, but he has been denounced by both sides. In response to his unwelcome efforts, the Nation, a Sri Lankan newspaper, editorialized that "the caravan of military operations has to move on. The time has come to tell the salmon-eating international busybodies to mind their own business."

The Sri Lankan government is justifiably confused and angry at the international response to their progress. Sri Lanka has been fighting the Tamil Tigers for over 30 years. The Tigers pioneered the modern use of suicide bombing and have killed thousands of civilians. A U.S. government expert on the group tells us that the Tigers are "one of the most odious insurgent groups around, and for a long stretch of time had more suicide attacks than the rest of the world combined. It has made a cult of martyrdom and violated every single previous cease-fire." During the most recent truce, the Tigers took the opportunity to assassinate about 200 moderate Tamil politicians and the Sri Lankan foreign minister.

Last year, Colombo decided enough was enough and withdrew from the cease-fire agreement. Using innovative counterinsurgency tactics, the Sri Lankan defense forces dismantled the guerrilla network on land and at sea. They drove the Tigers from their safe havens and bottled them up in a four-square-mile patch of beachfront swampland. Tiger leaders are hunkered down in underground bunkers trying desperately to stave off their looming demise.

We can only imagine American satisfaction if we had al Qaeda in this position. It is unconscionable for the United States to castigate its Sri Lankan ally for prevailing in its war against terrorism. The Tamil Tigers have purposefully created the conditions for a humanitarian crisis and deserve neither amnesty nor mercy. There are ways to help resolve this standoff that will not allow the Tigers to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, such as providing military and intelligence support for pinpoint strikes against the terrorist leadership. Failing that, the Obama administration should mind its own business. The Sri Lankans are winning; we should let them finish the job.

What have two main parties in TN done to support LTTP & seperitsts for last two years while LTTP is loosing the war?

Absolutely nothing!!!

They mentioned here & there some concerns about Tamil civillions but not to support LTTP.

After the election these two main parties voice will diminish about the Eelam. They will obey to the center like a dog obeying to the master.

LTTE announces unilateral ceasefire
[TamilNet, Sunday, 26 April 2009, 10:38 GMT]
"In the face of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis and in response to the calls made by the UN, EU, the governments of the USA, India and others, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam has announced an unilateral ceasefire. All of LTTE’s offensive military operations will cease with immediate effect," said a press statement issued by the Political Head Quarters of the LTTE Sunday. "We have taken into account the recent declarations by the G8 nations, the Whitehouse, Indian Ministers and the EU and other members of international community. We are in full agreement that the humanitarian crisis can only be overcome by declaration of an immediate ceasefire," the statement said calling upon the international community to pressure the Sri Lankan Government to reciprocate it.

If the current govt neglected the soldiers and their families, 30,000 recruits would not enlist every year to the SLA to kill Tigers." British, French, Swedish FMs to visit Sri Lanka

???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
LONDON (AFP) — The foreign ministers of Britain, France and Sweden will visit Sri Lanka on Wednesday, government officials in London said Sunday after Colombo rejected a ceasefire declared by Tamil Tiger rebels.

"Foreign Secretary David Miliband, together with his French counterpart Bernard Kouchner and Swedish counterpart Carl Bildt, will visit (Sri Lanka) on Wednesday," Downing Street said in a statement.

British Prime Minister Gordon Brown telephoned Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa earlier Sunday to express his concern "about the plight of civilians in the conflict zone," the statement added.

"He repeated his call for a ceasefire, and pledged a further 2.5 million pounds (2.7 million euros, 3.6 million dollars) for humanitarian aid for displaced persons," it said.

Sri Lanka says it is on the verge of defeating Tamil rebels who are fighting to create an independent homeland in the north of the island nation, and who stand accused of holding thousands of civilians hostage.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said its ceasefire was "in the face of an unprecedented humanitarian crisis" and in response to international appeals.

The British government said last week that junior international development minister Mike Foster will be visiting Sri Lanka on Monday to take stock of the humanitarian aspect of the conflict.

In its statement Sunday, Brown's office said he welcomed the ongoing visit to Sri Lanka by John Holmes, the United Nations under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs.

In a statement Sunday, Holmes also appealed to Sri Lanka to halt its military offensive against the Tamil Tigers in order to allow aid workers to help civilians trapped in the war zone.

Chennai, April 26 (IANS) Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her son Rahul and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh would campaign in Tamil Nadu next month, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi said Sunday.

“United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi, All India Congress Committee general secretary Rahul Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will address a series of election meetings in Tamil Nadu from May 1,” Ravi told reporters.

Ravi and state Congress unit president K.V. Thankabalu slammed the Sri Lanka government for ending the ceasefire prematurely last week.

“We respect the sovereignty of Sri Lanka but oppose the premature end of last week’s ceasefire. Our incessant voices against the unjust torments of innocent Tamils in the island shall continue in a proactive manner,” Thankabalu said.

Any updates on what is happening in NFZ? The puthinam and Tamilnet reports are scary!!! Can the LTTE hold the SLA for another month??? Or why not they escape the NFZ to a safer locations like wanni forests? Hope Prabhakaran, soosai, bhanu, pottu and other commanders should have escaped and asked Daya master to surrender and give some false info to the SLA. But its imperative to escape to a safer location and start rebuilind again as there is no other option right now.
Otherwise, the tigers should have infiltrated to the behind the lines of the enemy and start the action now which is highly impossible.
But the way these banda bastards are celebrating and the IC is sitting like a duck - its disgusting. But we will come back - stronger than ever. There is no doubt about that. Only thing is the people like us should fight in 2 ways.
1. Create contacts with all the politically connected poeple across the globe where ever we live
2. Do not but any goods which is made in Lanke even if it made by your fathers company.
3. Try to avoid the goods and services of the companies who are operating in Lanke. For example, Airtel - all tamils should avoid using airtel.

And, we should be ready to go and fight in SL

What happened to the remaining tigers? There were around 30000 during the cease fire period. Lets say 10000 had been allowed to go out of the organisation for family life.
and even if 10000 tigers had been killed in the last 2 years around 10000 should remain. Are they safe? Are they are with the organisation? Or they have melted with the Civilians as per the orders? Or they are in the jungles waiting for the right moment to strike.
I think the right way of doing is - all the cadres should escape to the jungles and then keep quiet for 6 months. Then start the guerrilla war. Hit them hardly - within that time we have to do the necessary things at all the countries where ever we live.

I have never had a srilankan tea in the last 2 years. I have given away all the shirts i bought in colombo when i visited SL in Nov 2005. We need to work closely with Isrealis for 3 reasons. 1.Isrealies know the pain of genocide. 2. They are technologically superior than most of the countries. 3. They have the necessary influence across the globe which will help us in the long run.

But we will come back.

Vivek[I think the right way of doing is - all the cadres should escape to the jungles and then keep quiet for 6 months. Then start the guerrilla war]

My take is, LTTE is trying to maximise the destruction to SLA before carrying out its guerilla warfare in the next phase. Therefore, I suspect bulk of the cadres are safe .... and will be safe. Apart from this, your analysis cud be accurate ..

tamils boycotting shit lankan products alone will not help much. need to spread the word to other communities, make the rest of the world feel guilty for buying shit lankan products. the effect if well planned will be devastating.

LTTE must surrender - Defence Sec.
"What ceasefire when running away?"

The LTTE must first lay down arms, surrender and let the people go, said Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa reacting to reports of an alleged unilateral cease fire by the LTTE, and reiterating the Governments position on the LTTE.

That [ceasefire] is a joke. What is the need for a ceasefire when they are running away, the Defence Secretary said.

The call for the LTTE to lay down arms and surrender, allowing the Tamil civilians held hostage by it to leave to freedom of their own free will has been the consistent demand of the Government of Sri Lanka, repeatedly stated by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

There were two occasions, first in January this year and later during the traditional New Year on April 13 & 14 when the government declared 48 hour restrictions to defensive operations to enable the Tamil civilians held hostage by the LTTE to leave. The LTTE rejected these moves and did not let the civilians move out.

From April 20 there has been a surge of civilians coming to the safety of government held areas from the LTTE held No Fire Zone. They have come in the face of many threats including shootings, grenade, mortar attacks and suicide bomber attacks, to escape the terror of the LTTE. At present nearly 180,000 civilians have crossed over to government held area.

Regarding the references to calls for an "immediate ceasefire" by foreign countries and international organizations in the LTTE's so-called declaration of a unilateral ceasefire, defence and political analysts said all these countries and organizations were clear in their repeated calls for the LTTE to lay down their arms and surrender, and give freedom to the people held by it to leave of their own free will.

"The LTTE is a terrorist organization and should be condemned for its use of civilian as a human shield. The LTTE should immediately lay down arms and renounce its terror tactics", said Ambassador Claude Heller, the President of the UN Security Council summing up the views expressed by the Members of the Security Council at a media briefing April 22.

The Tokyo Co-Chairs on April 25, as well as the United States, the European Union, India, the UK, France have all individually or jointly through different fora have also been consistent in their call on the LTTE to lay down arms and surrender, allowing freedom to Tamil civilians held by it.

congress believes life of one of its past leaders is worth the entire tamil race. they honestly don't give a f**** if entire tamil nadu and eelam tamils are wiped out as payback for rajiv. tamils in eyes of congress are worthless cockroaches that should be stamped on sight.

{Kerala and Tamil Nadu states on the look out for fleeing LTTE terrorists
(By: Walter Jayawardhana)

Indian Central government authorities have alerted Tamil Nadu and Kerala states to be on the lookout for fleeing Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam senior cadres including the outfits leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, who are more like to sneak into India due to the offensive against them by the Sri Lankan security forces.

The recent revelations of Daya Master, the senior hand of the LTTTE and the outfit's former media spokesman had told Sri Lankan intelligence that Prabhakaran might attempt to escape using one of LTTE's crude submarines which they had formerly used for narcotic smuggling and gun running.

India's Union home Ministry has informed the Southern coastal states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala to be on the alert of every person who would be visiting in the guise of refugees. Union Home Ministry officials had told newspapers that Police Chiefs have been asked to deploy additional police units to watch any movement along the coast in coordination with the coast guards. They have been instructed to question every refugee thoroughly and keep a close watch on the camps they would stay,

According to Tamil Nadu police for the last two months they had been put on alerts to be on the look out for Prabhakaran and others of the outfit . LTTE leaders would like to sneak into Tamil Nadu jungles due to some following they find in the state, it is believed.

During the recent offensive at Mullaittivu Sri Lankan soldiers unearthed half built submarines from a LTTE boat yard. Intelligence services know that the kind of submarines the LTTE had used to smuggle South American cocaine and the ones used in Thailand had been not fully submersible vessels but only partly submersible ones. If Prabhakaran uses that kind of one to escape it would be easier to notice than a fully submersible vessel.

Police in coastal districts have been instructed to keep a close watch on hospitals and lodges. Staffs of hospitals have been advised to keep a close watch on people coming with suspicious injuries. Except refugee boats no other vessels have been so far reported.

{'Sarath Fonseka has displayed qualities of a great military leader' says Indian express
(By: Walter Jayawardhana)

Writing in the Indian Express newspaper, Satish Nambiar said, Sri Lankan Army Commander Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka "has displayed the qualities of a great military leader nations are blessed with from time to time."

Nambiar is a retired Lieutenant General in the Indian Army who headed the United Nations Protection Force in the former Yugoslavia (1992-93).

Writing on the Army Chief Nambiar further said, "Resurrected from the grave as it were after the attack on him some years back, he has displayed a single-mindedness of purpose in pursuing his goal of decimating the LTTE. Needless to say, he has been able to achieve his objective because of the full support and encouragement provided by the political establishment led by President Rajapaksa.

"The demise of the LTTE is possibly," said Nambiar, " now only a matter of days. The total demolition of the once universally feared organisation that introduced suicide terrorism and the use of improvised explosives (IEDs) as a form of insurgency warfare is a tribute to the determination of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces under its intrepid commander, Sarath Fonseka. General Fonseka has displayed the qualities of a great military leader nations are blessed with from time to time."

He further said, "As someone who was briefly involved with the peace process in Sri Lanka in 2002-2003, I have already acknowledged the outstanding performance of the SL security forces and the efforts of General Fonseka, a person I met on a number of occasions during my visits to Sri Lanka during 2002-2003 and developed great respect for, both as an individual and as a soldier."

At least 52 LTTE cadres have surrendered themselves to Sri Lanka Army at Valayarmadam today (Apr 26), reveal defence sources. Among them were 23 trained LTTE cadres between 13 to 18 years of age and a group 29 schoolchildren who had been recently conscripted to the outfit, the sources add.

The surrendees have told the soldiers that there are many hundreds like them still being held by the LTTE leadership for his protection. The soldiers found these young LTTE cadres while conducting mopping up operations in the Valayarmadam area this morning.

According to the sources, the boys' heads had been shaved while the girls had been given very short hair cuts. The surrendees have told that the LTTE had done this to them to identify them if they dared to escape. They have further said that all the young LTTE cadres are waiting for the soldiers to come and rescue them from the wicked outfit that brought immense sufferings upon them and their families. All of them had only one request to be made from the soldiers, which was to find their parents for them, the sources add.

Two Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) fighter bombers continued to bomb civilian targets in Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal after the announcement by the Sri Lankan forces that it would not deploy heavy weapons or carry out air attacks as pressure mounted from the International Community. LTTE's Director of Peace Seceratariat, S. GOSL is trying to get the civillian liberated.

Do not dream that GOSL is going to give a seperate country to LTTE.

All countries, US, UK, Japan, EU, Norway, India & other countries mentioned any solution for Tamil people withing one country, Sri Lanka. They are not against the war to crush LTTE.

Therefore I am telling to ALL Peelamist that there will not be LTTP control areas in the future.

Everything within one country.
