Army.lk caught using fake photographs

By Badrinath Mahalingam

For the last one week the Army.lk website has severely restricted its use of photos, and has almost exclusively published only "file photos" unrelated to the articles. We have heard from reliable sources working in the government that this is due to a direct order from above to stop publishing photos that are not personally approved by a high ranking official. This order came about after the defence.lk website was caught several times using fake photographs, sometimes even showing dead bodies of Sinhala soldiers while claiming they were LTTE fighters.

Out of the 20 articles currently published on the army.lk front page, only two articles have had photographs "approved" to be published. These two articles are titled "Troops Collect Fifteen Dead Tigers & Twenty Weapons" (located at http://www.army.lk/morenews.php?id=20926) and "Besieged Civilians in their Hundreds Reach Cleared Areas" (located at http://www.army.lk/morenews.php?id=20924). Unfortunately both of these articles contain fake photographs, evident from the date the pictures were taken.

In the first article, the following photographs are shown:

The article states:

"Tigers during Sunday (29) unsuccessfully tried to assault advancing troops but the troops took an upper hand and reacted hard against them. Tigers went on running amok leaving behind their arms and ammunition and also their own cadres."

"ARMY troops engaged in extensive search and clear operations in captured areas, north of PALAMATTALAN, PUTHUKUDIYIRIPPU this morning (30) collected dead bodies of fifteen more Tigers along with twenty T-56 weapons and one Multi Purpose Machine Gun (MPMG)."

As you can see in the photographs, there are 20 T-56 weapons and one multi purpose machine gun, so the story must be true, right? There is only one small problem. Even though the story seems to match the photograph (with the exception of the 15 dead LTTE fighters they claimed to have recovered), the photograph itself was taken in February of 2008!

So rather than write articles based on actual events, and then adding related photographs to the article, the Army.lk writers start out with fake photographs, and then "create" a story based on the photograph. How else could the fake photograph have the exact number of T-56 rifles as the story, and exact number of multi purpose machine guns. It is clear that the story originated from the photograph, and the photograph itself was a fake from more than a year ago.

Please note once again the amount of detail this creative writer adds to a non-existant story based off a photograph taken a year before:
"Tigers during Sunday (29) unsuccessfully tried to assault advancing troops but the troops took an upper hand and reacted hard against them. Tigers went on running amok leaving behind their arms and ammunition and also their own cadres."

First the tigers "unsuccessfully tried to attack", then the Sri Lankan army soldiers "reacted hard against them" resulting in the tigers "running amok" in panic. In that state of panic the tigers "started abandoning their weapons and ammunitions and even their own cadres". Just see the extent of fantasy writing the Army.lk website goes to. The photograph is a year old, yet these creative writers have imagined a whole series of events on how that photograph came to be. And the scariest part is that the government of Sri Lanka then presents these fantasy movie scripts to the world as factual "news".

The only other article on their website to contain a photograph is "Besieged Civilians in their Hundreds Reach Cleared Areas" which has the following photograph:

Though the article was published on March 30th, the photograph they show, which was supposedly taken the same day, was actually taken on March 13th. So once again we see that the army.lk and defence.lk websites both manufacture stories and extensively use fake photographs to mislead the public. Add to this the fact that the daily reported number of LTTE fighters killed never matches between the Army.lk website and the Defence.lk website, both of whom are official government websites. When one government website says 40 LTTE fighters were killed, and the other website says only 2 fighters were killed, it becomes obvious someone is making up stories. What is so surprising is that the government officials are so stupid that they do not even compare the stories they publish to make sure there are no contradictions.

In summary, out of the 20 articles currently being displayed on the Army.lk front page, there is not a single authentic photograph included. 18 of the articles contain no photographs at all, or sample pictures labeled as "file photos". The remaining two articles that do contain photographs actually have fake photographs, as well as creatively manufactured storylines based on those fake photographs.

Another example of imaginative stories created from a photograph was the following, reported last week both on Army.lk and Defence.lk:

Defence.lk stated about this photograph: "LTTE built statue of the megalomaniac terror chief Prabakaran is located in the centre of Iranapalai junction." Unfortunately the fiction writers at Defence.lk didn't even take the trouble to read the name writen on the statue's plaque before writing their story line:

When the official government defence department can't make out the difference between a Prabhakaran and a Senthuran, it is no wonder that they have been unable to capture him for 30 years. Even though Tamil is supposedly an official language in Sri Lanka, it is obvious that even high ranking officers in the defence department do not know how to read it. How else can you explain not a single person in the defence department realizing who the statue was in the photograph? But truth is not important for the government of Sri Lanka. More important is to create catchy fantasy stories, like the one of the LTTE fighters who "ran amok", "dropping their weapons", which happened to be photographed by the defence department a year before.

Back in London and finally back on Puligal Blog.

Once again, excellent work.

ArmyLK caught in its own time-stamp game. What will DefenceLK, Asian Tribune and the technical Bandas say now?

The point about Tamil writing is more interesting, though.

No one at their most expensive ministry know how to read Tamil?

Reading Tamil isn't that difficult. I know a few non-Tamils who can phonetically read Tamil writing, but not understand.

Sorry affairs of Moda Lanka.

"As you can see in the photographs, there are 20 T-56 weapons and one multi purpose machine gun, so the story must be true, right?"

Badri,

In most cases photos are found to fit the story.

In this case, I think ArmyLK concocted a story around the photo. Bandas deserve a pat for innovation.

Peter said...

Oopss! You had mentioned that as well. I guess there is no harm in emphasising Banda-ness.

Bandas in LNP were devil dancing as usual after seeing these images! In a way, the ArmyLK has succeeded in feeding their daily ration of punnaku …

The same photos were published by ArmyLK on 01 Feb '08 in a story about "during the year 2007 alone 1,322 Tiger cadres have been confirmed killed".

They have since removed the photos from that story. From the cache is looks like they have changed file name from news_1_3.jpg to recover_1_3.jpg

worst thing was bbc published this same story "Sri Lanka army 'kills 15 rebels' " without even checking the time stamp. how retarded are they!!! this shows how biased are the BBC.

Besides AFP was putting recently Tigers chemical weapons concocted by GOSL. Curious however, how comes the GOSL succeeds in making fools out of BBC, AP, Reuters and AFP ? Let alone the Indian News agencies, they are already “fools”. Bandas seem to have some intelligence though.

So the govt claim that Viduthalthivu fallen, Adampan fallen, Pooneryn, Paranthan, Killinochchi, Mulathivu etc must be all made up. Are they the work of creative writers. Is LTTE doing well at the moment. Nice to know they are controlling 10,000 sq kms. Thank god. Good luck boys.

Pierre said...

What about Tamilnet publishing photographs taken years ago.
You are happy you managed to prove a point. Are you happy with the situation your boys are in.(not the civilians). That is the important thing. Put up while flag boys.

["So the govt claim that Viduthalthivu fallen, Adampan fallen, Pooneryn, Paranthan, Killinochchi, Mulathivu etc must be all made up."]

That has nothing to do with the article. We are not saying the LTTE has won or lost, we are simply proving that the Sri Lankan government is misleading its citizens. If everything was going as they claimed, what is the need to lie and use fake photographs.

Peter said...

BBC, AFP, etc., always report as "military said" or "officials said"; thus, keeping themselves clear of any blame for DefenceLK/ArmyLK creative ventures. Even the related BBC story "Sri Lanka army 'kills 15 rebels'" makes the claim in quotes.

gambit said...

OK great mr. Badrinath answer me these questions,

First picture was taken at 12.26AM which is midnight in and do you really think you have that much light at that time of the day?

Second on taken at 9.28PM which should be pretty dark but the picture is clearly taken in Sunlight.

IT IS OBVIOUS THAT IF TIME IS NOT CORRECT THE DATE MIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN UPDATED AS WELL.

Don't you think the date/time of the camera is not updated? So there you go you missed one important detail in the analysis.

please feel free to delete this comment if you think it is unanswerable.

On the other hand, Indian newspapers like "The Hindu", publish Sri Lankan government reports word for word because they are all getting paid by the government.

Most of the international papers dont really care about Lanka, so if Indian papers publish it, they just copy it and publish it without verifying.

["First picture was taken at 12.26AM which is midnight in and do you really think you have that much light at that time of the day?"]

Dear modaya,

There are many time zones in the world, and the default time zone in a camera depends on where the camera was purchased. These cameras are not manufactured in Lanka, so the default timezone will be from the western country they were purchased in. Most are probably smuggled into the country by Rajapaksa at tax payer expense.

You may now thank me for educating you.

Indian ones are sub-standard anyway. The Hindu is hardly a standard barer nowadays.

International media always quotes and makes clear that independent verification is not possible because of restriction imposed by the bandas.

Dear Modaya,

If you ever get enough money to buy a digital camera, try this test:

1) Take out the battery.

2) Put the battery and check the date.

3) Confirm the date is not dependent on the battery.

4) Come here and admit you have never used a digital camera in your life.

You are failing in the comprehension test. It is not about how many cameras army.lk can have. In 2008 all articles had photos taken with a Samsung S760 camera. In 2009 the articles do not use that model camera. Conclusion: This photo is indeed from 2008, as that is the period this camera was used by Army.lk.

Modayo,

Some cameras do retain the date if they have an internal battery... some cameras DON'T.. might wanna read the camera history a bit... :)

“Things” and “agendas” are subtler than what we could perceive. BBC was always the first to report all what is said against Tigers (UNCIEF’s statements for example) without making proper first-hand investigations. BBC was again the first to run to interview Karuna soon after his separation. Why can’t BBC report (even quoting TamilNet) that every day or so, many Tamil civilians are killed and injured as it does for the GOSL ?

gambit said...

Oh if you have an internal battery date will retain if not the date wont be retained and will be set to default automatically.. you get me mr.Badri?..

Samsung S760 was out in Dec'07/Jan'08. They used a new camera then; not that it was any good, was under $100 anyway. Nowadays they use Nikon and Sony most of the time. I haven't come across a single '09 photo on ArmyLK taken with the Samsung S760.

gambit said...

Anyways my point is if the TIME is not correct on those pictures the DATES might be wrong as well.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

Point noted. We are dealing with probabilities, which pretty unanimously suggest the picture is fake.

1) Take for example the fact that no other photos in recent times have been taken with this camera, but articles around the DATE of the photo have pictures taken with the same camera.

2) No other photos in recent months have wrong dates on any of the photographs. Thus there has never been a problem with camera dates being set wrong. Every single photo on their website has had the dates set correctly.

Probabilities indicate it is a fake photograph, even though it is still possible that aliens from Mars hacked into their website, edited the photo date, and then re-uploaded it.

Please also note that these same arguments have been used by the Defence.lk website twice in the last month against Tamilnet photographs. So whatever defence you come up with, please also use it for the LTTE.

Today's army.lk story is the stupidest in a long time. Only modayas would believe the LTTE was firing artillery guns at 0 degrees from a distance of 200 meters. These writers really have no creative talent at all.

Why would the LTTE transport their artillery to within 200 meters of the front line, and then aim them at zero degrees? Thats what mortars are for. They can carry dozens of mortar guns and use them at closer range. The story is just stupid, and shows they have run out of ideas to write about.

Badri is right. The tractor parked at 10:58 and then the UAV stopped recording the footage.

Meanwhile the tractor slipped away and no body noticed (cause the UAV is not recording the movement)

The Jet comes at 11:30 and the UAV starts recording again and the bomb is dropped at the place where the tractor parked previously.

SLAF please learn from this mistake. Keep the UAV cameras rolling even after tractors park under trees, so that even if they move away the pilots will know where to bomb exactly

Great catch again Badri, If you also noticed the video first would have been a surveillance aircraft( upto 10:30:30), the later video from a Bomber, you can clearly see the color difference in footage.

30 mins differnece from spotting the Artilary and bombing it.

Just wasted bombing just trees. Nevertheless it serve a great purpose of making fakies a little happy.

If you want to see the exact location the bomb was dropped, in google earth find these coordinates:

9 d 19' 48 N, 80 d 43' 16 e

The bomb hit the corner of the smaller three way cross road. You can identify the location easily from the larger four way crossroad a bit south (watch the video in full screen).

This gives you some idea where the LTTE are, because they can drive around freely in this area without worrying about being attacked.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

The format to enter in the google earth search bar is:

9 19 48.00 N 80 43 16.00 E

Just copy and past that, the above one was formatted wrong.

One thing I notice about the Sri Lankan bombs is that they only cover a 15 foot area. In order to make it look more powerful they zoom in the camera just before bombing.

If you watch this latest video you can see its a tiny dirt road, maybe 30 feet wide at most, and after the smoke clears, the bomb mark is only half the road, or roughly 15 feet by 15 feet. The smoke it creates is a lot more, but afterwards when you see the damage it is tiny.

Statement from M.I.A (Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam), British-Tamil songwriter, record producer, singer, fashion designer and artist supporting the “Mercy Mission to Vanni” (www.vannimission.org):

I just had a baby last month, that’s why I can’t be there today, but I want to give my support and thanks to the launch of the chartered humanitarian ship Mercy Mission launching March 31, 2009.

I made it out in the late 80’s and so my baby is going to grow up with hospitals, healthcare, food, free education, freedom of speech and religion, a life expectancy of 80-90 years and many of the liberties that we in democratic world take for granted.

A baby born in the Vanni Region today is getting no access to hospitals (they bombed the last one and it’s run out of supplies.) There is limited food because the government banned the aid agencies and there is no education because the trapped civilians only have one option and that is to make it to the government-run internment camps where they only enforce the language and ideas of the government. The Tamils have less rights then the animals in Sri Lanka.

The Mercy Mission will carry dry food and medicines for Tamil civilians in Vanni within the Sri Lankan Government’s “safe zone.” Many have already perished from starvation and preventable disease. We can not ignore these genocidal conditions, and if the aim of the SL Government is to protect the lives of the civilians, then this ship will reach its destination and lives will be saved.

Thank you very much,
Maya Arulpragasam (M.I.A.)

The smoke it creates is a lot more, but afterwards when you see the damage it is tiny.

dont agree with you on this mate. bombs kill more than 100 civilians a day according to reports

Population density is very high, so even a 15 foot explosion with shrapnel will kill many people if fired into a densely populated area.

S.Lanka rupee at new low, foreign money leaves bourse

(Adds comments, stocks)

* Rupee hits new life low on import dlr demand

* Cenbank still maintains flexible exchange rate-official

* Foreigners pull out of bourse to avoid devaluation risk

By Shihar Aneez

COLOMBO, March 31 (Reuters) - Sri Lanka's rupee hit a new life low on Tuesday on dollar demand from importers and investors cashing out shares to avoid an expected risk of rupee devaluation after an International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan comes through.

The bourse fell in thin trade with foreigners pulling out due to the rupee fall, brokers said.

The rupee closed at an all-time low of 115.80/116.00 a dollar, down 0.5 percent from Monday's 115.20/115.40. Its previous life low was 115.75/95 hit on Feb. 27 before the central bank intervened to keep it steady.

"This is a clear indication that the central bank has floated the rupee to fulfill a condition for the IMF loan," said a currency dealer. "Otherwise, why should it stay away now without intervention after protecting the rupee heavily since September?"

Nandalal Weerasinghe, the chief economist at the central bank, declined to comment except to say the bank has already said it is allowing greater flexibility in the exchange rate.

"The fall might be due to market demand and supply," he said.

The central bank is currently in negotiations with a team from the global lender in Colombo.

The rupee has fallen 6.81 percent since Oct. 30, after the central bank allowed depreciation to preserve dollars and enhance exporter competitiveness. It is down 2.5 percent so far in 2009.

The Colombo All-Share index .CSE edged down 0.4 percent or 6.53 points to 1638.06, driven largely by profit-taking on shares in top conglomerate John Keells Holdings JKH.CM

"Foreigners are seen selling John Keells shares and exiting the market due to rupee devaluation expectations," said Mohandas Thangarajah, a stockbroker at First Guardian Equities.

Currency dealers confirmed a foreign bank bought dollars from the market to facilitate a foreign sale of Keells.

Analysts said foreign investors might return to the bourse once the rupee settles to a market-driven level, devoid of central bank support.

Keells, which had risen 10.3 percent since March 25, closed down 2.71 percent at 62.75 rupees, calculated on a weighted average.

National Development Bank NDB.CM plummeted 8.25 percent to 89 rupees.

Turnover was 79.5 million rupees ($68,590), a fraction of last year's daily volume of 464 million rupees.

The interbank lending rate or call money rate CLIBOR closed flat at 11.220 percent from Monday's 11.222 percent.

SRI LANKA COMMENCE BEGGING FOR LAST 30KM HIGHWAY

April 01, 2009 : Sri Lanka is in talks with the Asian Development Bank on ways to raise funds to build the last stretch of a key highway linking the island's south with the capital Colombo, a senior ADB official said.
The ADB’s Country Director for Sri Lanka, Richard Vokes said the talks were on how to fund the last 30 kilometre stretch of the southern highway for which no funds have been allocated.

Parts of the southern highway, mostly funded by the ADB, are under construction albeit years behind the original schedule.

Vokes said the talks focussed on guarantees by the bank and government on funds.

"We're discussing additional support for the southern highway. The last part has not been worked on. We're looking to see how to help."

He said it was the ADB which suggested the talks as part of a programme about additional guarantee options.

"We're discussing with the government on using an ADB guarantee backed by a sovereign guarantee to seek to raise additional funding for the southern highway," Vokes told a news conference.

"For some projects this is a possible way of trying to raise funding. We recognise that the situation in the global financial markets means this is not an easy option. But the indications we have is it is not impossible."

The highway, meant to link the capital Colombo with the town of Matara in the deep south of the island which has suffered decades of neglect, is scheduled to be completed by 2010.

More than 35 percent of the highway has now been built.

The project is meant to greatly reduce travel time and promote easier movement to and from the southern areas to Colombo, which should increase economic activity.

Sri Lankan economy goes down the drain and begs for 3.2 billion instead of 1.6 billion IMF loan

01 Apr 2009 09:49:39 AM ISTCOLOMBO: Significant economic problems confront Sri Lankans even as the armed forces are poised to rout out the Tamil Tigers from their last refuge in the north eastern part of the island country.

Sri Lanka, being dependent on garment exports has been badly affected by the global recession. Now, with the war and related security issues, tourism, another big sector in terms of foreign exhange, has also been hit hard.

According to Dushni Weerakoon, Deputy Director of the Institute of Policy Studies, export growth has fallen from 12.2 per cent in 2007 to 6.8 per cent in 2008. Trade deficit had been growing and stood at $ 5.8 billion. The fiscal deficit stood at 7 percent of the GDP. Inflation, which was 15.8 percent in 2007, rose to 22.6 per cent in 2008, though it is likely to come down to 13 percent in 2009 due to various factors like the fall in domestic demand.

Government economists say that the overall growth will be 5.5 per cent in 2009. But others contend that, going by the trend in the last quarter of 2008 when the growth rate had come down to 4.3 percent, it will be difficult to touch even 5 per cent.

While countries like Malaysia have gained in tourist arrivals, Sri Lanka has been unable to attract a significant number of tourists despite a marked improvement in the security situation in the country, especially in Colombo and others tourist destinations in the southern part of the country.

The global recession has led to the closure of many garment factories in Sri Lanka and the laying off of thousands of workers. Wasantha Samarasinghe, President of the Inter Company Employees Union told The New Indian Express on Monday that 50,000 workers have lost their jobs in the last three months. Palitha Athukorala of the Progressive Union notes that out of the 832 factories set up in 2004, only 403 survive now.

Realising the gravity of the situation, the Sri Lankan government had given up borrowing from other countries at high interest, and had approached the IMF for a loan. The IMF has pledged $ 1.9 billion.

Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said last week that with the situation becoming grave, the government had decided to seek $3.2 billion from the IMF. He also announced that the government had ordered state institutions to cut expenditure and prune developmental and welfare schemes.

UN urged to use the R2P doctrine against Sri Lanka. Case soon to be filed

Sangeetha NeerajaFirst Published : 01 Apr 2009 02:32:00 AM ISTLast Updated : 01 Apr 2009 10:52:32 AM ISTCHENNAI PUCL (People’s Union for Civil Liberties) urged on Tuesday the UN Human Rights Commission to intervene immediately in the Lankan Tamil issue by invoking the UN clause of ‘Responsibility to Protect’ (R2P) doctrine to stop the annihilation of Tamils and prevent the death of democracy in Sri Lanka.

Dr.V.Suresh President PUCL Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry said, “ Indian government can no longer escape, by saying we cannot interfere in the affairs of a sovereign country. Under the R2P doctrine, which came into force, post Rwanda crisis in December 2001 as per the recommendations of the International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty, when a state fails in its responsibility to protect its citizens, the responsibility falls on the international community to intervene and protect the citizens from harm.”

PUCL under this doctrine proposes to file a case in the International Criminal Court to prosecute the Sri Lankan President, army chief and other top officals for crimes against humanity. In a recently concluded PUCL special national convention held in New Delhi (on March 21and 22 ), they passed a few resolutions to this effect.

Dr.V.Suresh, said “One of our demands to the Indian government is to stop aiding and abetting the war in Sri Lanka. Without the support of Indian government, the Sri Lankan army would not be in a position to wage the war successfully. We urge the Indian government to stop this kind of logistics support to the Sri Lankan government.”

He said, “It was shocking to know how this Sri Lankan issue is not known to the world outside Tamil Nadu. At this juncture it is important to internationalize this issue.”

The complete lack of media access to the war zone was one of the causes for lack of awarenesss about the extend of the sufferings of the Tamils. “We hope the international community prevail upon the Sri Lankan government to allow the media entry into the war zone to report the truth,” Dr.Suresh added.

PUCL also urged the Union Government to prevail upon on Sri Lankan government to go for a ‘Humanitarian Pause’ to create a conducive atmosphere for a political settlement. The UN on March 26 had also urged the Lankan government for a ‘Humanitarian Pause’.

SRI LANKA NEWSPAPER ARE TURNING TO BE JOKER

Pillayan to support UNP?

Eastern Province Chief Minister and TMVP leader Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan is expected to switch his support to the UNP due to continuing differences with his former ally and Minister Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman.

A top official of the TMVP told Daily Mirror the Chief Minister had reportedly met a top official of the UNP and discussed several proposals and conditions under which both

parties could work together.Mr. Pillayan had been openly criticizing Mr. Amman both at public rallies and in the media for having said there was no need for police powers for the East. Mr. Pillayan had responded by saying Mr. Amman had no right to make such comments on the East.

Mr. Amman recently left the TMVP and joined the SLFP leading to him being sworn in as a Minister after which he said TMVP offices in the East loyal to him would change over to SLFP offices.

Daily Mirror learns that the Eastern Province Chief Minister is outraged by the government’s silence over Mr. Amman’s negative comments despite the TMVP being associated with the government and had finally led to Pillayan exploring the possibility of extending support to the UNP.

Gotcha!!

Those of you who believed our above page one story, have been fooled so all we can say to you is – April Fool!!!

It seems several of our readers including those in the government and opposition had believed the story and had even contacted Mr. Pillayan to seek a clarification.

Our apologies to Mr. Pillayan, if our harmless joke caused any pain of mind to him or his party.

Have a great April Fools’ day.
