Chemical weapons used by Sri Lanka against Tamil civilians in no fire zone

( A civilian victim of Sri Lankan chemical weapons in the no fire zone.)

Recent reports indicate the Sri Lankan army has begun using chemical weapons against highly congested civilian areas within the no fire zone. With just 11 days left before the Indian elections conclude, Sri Lanka is under intense pressure to finish off the war or face a possible Indian intervention after the elections. In response, Sri Lanka has been transporting large numbers of gas masks to the front lines, and has begun deploying chemical weapons through artillery.

Chemical weapons were extensively used around April 1st, during a siege on Anandapuram, but after that attack, the government returned to using standard explosive munitions. This week's return to using chemical weapons appears to be in response to a failed amphibious assault carried out by the Sri Lankan navy in which there are rumors that LTTE submarines may have intercepted troop transport vehicles attempting to land in the no fire zone.

Sri Lanka: 'We had to throw the bodies into the sea'

tn thamilz said...

Guys, take the pre-poll, exit-poll numbers with pinch of salt. In 2004, everyone predicted a massive win for NDA and you know what happened. If any news paper or tv channels throw the numbers around, check whether they give state wise break up and check with the other websites who have ears on the ground to see whether the tally match up. Most of the "ears on the ground" predicts Cong graps >= 120 only and BJP takes up 165+. Let us see who is right.. 10 more days for the result.

tn thamilz said...

"Cong grabs <= 120"

th thamilz,
I agree on opinion polls. But your "ears on the ground" seem way off target.Care to explain the prediction statewise?

This is statewise numbers I predict through various media.Number inside brackets indicate the tally they had in 2004.

Delhi - Nothing has changed in ground;Sheila dikshit has amazing acceptability and will pull it through for INC

Cong - 6 (6)
BJP - 1(1)

Andhra - Congress along with TRS last time bagged arouund 34 seats out of 42.This time around their tally comes down, but not by much.Chiru has eaten into TDP's traditional rural and women vote base which has benifited the Congress ofcourse.TRS is a spent force which was showcased by the by-election results a while back

Cong - 25(29)
BJP - 0(0) ; 0 as they have no alliance there and Naidu is now out of NDA as well

Kerala - Congress returned a naught last time; This time they will gain which is tradition with Kerala; They always provide alternate chances and this is aided by the infighting between Achudanandan and Pinari Vijayan

Cong - 14(0)
BJP - 0(0)

Gujarat - BJP seems to have bucked the trend here and seems to be improving on its tally

Cong - 8(12)
BJP - 18(14)

MP - This state went overwhelmingly with BJP last time around and this time Congress will do well when compared to last time

Cong - 11(4)
BJP - 18(25)

WB - Congress with TMC have formed a good alliance;Last time both of them lost as they battled separately;Even last time with their votes combined together they would have had much improved performance.

Cong - 14-16 With TMC(6 alone)
BJP - 0 (0)

Orrisa - Here Patnaik gave a gift to the Congress by ditching the BJP;It will aid the Congress

Cong - 9(2)
BJP - 3(7)

Rajasthan - State elections are over just and its honeymoon period as they call it.Results will be reversed

Cong - 17 or 18(4)
BJP - 8 or 7(21)

Punjab - Rahul's lab as I read today; He has tried so many things and the results will indicate if we will see more such actions by Congress elsewhere in the country;Anti-incumbency will hit Akali's hard

Cong - 7(2)
BJP with SAD - 6(11)

Thats more than 110 seats out of total 184.Ofcourse they cant continue the same elsewhere. But states like Maharashtra \ J&K \ UP \ TN and in NE together they will definitely muster another 50 minimum. That itself takes Cong tally alone well past 160.

Ofcourse this is a very conservative estimate.BJP on other hand have 70 odd seats in this 184 and might get another 50 seats in states I mentioned above. That takes them close to 120.

Indian said...

Well, you can take another +-10 to those numbers and still INC will emerge as the single largest.

tn thamilz said...

every one has their own opinion on the election results and you have your own. Let us wait for 10 days to see who is correct.

It seems there is an unofficial ceasefire on the ground. Could be the pressure from Congress to go slow until the election is over.

Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) dropped several cluster bombs Tuesday, killing scores in the so-called safety zone, in Mu'l'li-vaaykkaal and Iraddai-vaaykkaal area. There were also Multi Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) rockets that caused immediate fire to shelters killing and maiming families throughout the night. Exact casualty details were not available as the dead were not brought to the hospital and the hospital was not in a state to report exact details of the wounded. The ICRC ship which was expected on Tuesday didn't arrive, the doctors said.

Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi's recent comment about the party keeping all post-poll options open, including an alliance with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam chief J Jayalalitha, has angered its ally in Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

The DMK, a key constituent of the United Progressive Alliance, has refused to canvass for Congress candidates in the state. The party is apprehensive that the Congress might be quietly wooing its arch-rival the AIADMK.

"The Congress has shown its real colours," said a senior DMK minister in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's cabinet.

The decision to postpone Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's election rallies seems timely, as senior Congress leaders in the state have been fuming at the Gandhi scion's comments.

After Gandhi's press conference on Tuesday, many DMK parliamentarians and leaders have slowed down their speeches and public rallies in the state.

"He hasn't visited the state and hasn't read local newspapers. How can a senior general secretary make such sweeping comments," a senior Tamil Nadu Congress Committee secretary told this correspondent.

"It would have been better if Rahul baba had remained silent. The Tamil Nadu Congress is now sandwiched between Karunanidhi and Jayalalitha," say local Congress leaders.

DMK cadres in Tamil Nadu have reportedly refused to campaign for Congress candidates, including high-profile candidates like Union Home Minister Chidambaram, who is contesting from Sivaganga and Union minister Mani Shankar Iyer, who is contesting from Mayiladuthurai.

"Doesn't Gandhi know that Jayalalithaa, in her public addresses, claims that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh himself intervened to save Sonia Gandhi's Italian friend Ottavio Quttarochi. She also alleges that Gandhi has not shed a single tear for the hundreds of Tamilians who are being massacred in Sri Lanka. With these kind of nasty comments, how can Rahul Gandhi expect the AIADMK to support the UPA," said a local Congress leader.

Dear TN Thamizh,
What Indian claiming may be correct to an extent. The congress party may be a single largest party after the elections but with fewer seats compared to last time. They may get around 180 to 190. (This may come down to 160 -170 if congress does not do well in andhra, tn)
But again we need to consider the follwong also.
Their allies RJD in Bihar is in shambles. If they are able to get around 10 seats in Bihar its great.
Like wise, the TN has gone for them where they have got 40 seats last time. Please see my previious post, they will get a maximum of around 8 to 10 seats with BJP has a possibility of taking one or two - Nagerkoil and Ramnad.

So, in these two states itself they are losing around 65 to 70 seats. Coming back to Andhra, last time again they have got a huge majority. This time they can win around 12 seats. Not more than that.
Maharashtra is also not very favourable to cong this time. And let us take the reality that this may be the last election for Sharad Pawar and he may jump into third front or BJP if necessary after the elections.
One more area i totally differ with Indian is Punjab. There was anti-incumbancy factor earlier, but the way congress handled the Tytlor issue, it has taken a new dimension and congress will draw a flak in this state too.
There is more bad news coming from US which may affect the TN by way of Outsourcing. TN is the top state in terms of Software exports in terms of actuals. (Infosys and wipro bills the clients from their Bangalore address -thats why bangalore tops the bill - but actually the total man power is higher in chennai)
Karnataka is gone for them this time. BJP will take atleast around 20 - 23 seats there.

The gains for congress would be in Kerala (gain of around 8 -9 ), Orissa(7-9), W. bengal(4-7), Rajastan(4 to 5). Even in the north east, its very difficult for cong this time. Only assam has got 13 seats and all the other states are with single digits and they will go against congress. But the gains are small whereas the losses are very big.
So, congress coming to power is going to be a dream for them. Please think what happened in 1989. VP singh was the PM and both BJP and left were supporting from outside. Even that may happen this time if BJP is not able to form the Govt. But people are very sure that they will not allow Congress to form the Govt.
Why left will not support the congress?
1. Chandrababu naidu who is their partner in AP is doing politics against congress and he will stall the move.
2. Left is fed up with congress. Their agenda last time was to make the BJP to bite the bullet and this time its make the congress get out of power. Like others, they also nowadays do lot of political games and they may support BJP from outside.
This is the ground rreality. Hope Indian also agrees on that even though he is a staunch congress supporter.

tn thamilz said...

Vivek, you are right on the dot on your assessment on the states.. The link I provided goes in detail on the number of sheets. Congress is lossing in may places where they got good numbers earlier.

Kerala - Cong. gaining at the cost of Left. Left will never support BJP. so, cong. gain in Kerala is nullified.

Andra - losing big now with the 'maga kootani'. TDP won't support cong in center because, in the state, the competition is between Cong and TDP only. It would be political suicide for TDP if they align with cong.

MP - BJP will totally destroy Cong here.

MH - Sarad pawar put a same side goal. Due to that, BJP and sena aliance is gaining..

The only place where Cong will have real gain is Orissa (due to BJD's stupidity).

"Canadians plead guilty in terror trial
The trial of three Canadians accused of travelling to New York in 2006 to buy anti-aircraft missiles and assault rifles for the Tigers ended on Tuesday following two more guilty pleas.

Sahilal Sabaratnam, 29 and Thiruthanikan Thanigasalam, 41, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to support a foreign terrorist group and conspiracy to buy missiles.

Their co-accused, Sathajhan Sarachandran, 29, had already pleaded guilty on Monday. They each face a minimum sentence of 25 years with a maximum of life imprisonment after admitting they were part of a Canadian-based arms procurement cell of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, also known as the LTTE.

"With these convictions we have sent a clear message that the LTTE and its supporters cannot use the United States as a source of supply for deadly weapons and technology, and that all terrorists who attempt to do so will be met with the full resources of law enforcement," US Attorney Benton Campbell said.

The case was the product of an undercover investigation, called Project O-Needle, conducted jointly by the FBI and the RCMP.

The investigation began when the suspects made contact with a man they thought was a US arms dealer but who was actually a confidential police informant.

The FBI launched an undercover sting operation that caught the defendants on tape negotiating to purchase 10 Russian SA-18 missiles and 500 AK-47 assault rifles for US$900,000.

The cell was working under the direction of Pottu Aman, the intelligence and procurement chief of the Tigers and right-hand man to LTTE leader guerrilla boss Velupillai Prabhakaran, the US Attorney's office said in a statement.

US officials said each of the men had distinct roles in the procurement group. National Post "

Regarding the pictures of Prabhakaran on the defence.lk website, I am sure everyone in the world has pictures of themselves celebrating some special occassion. There is nothing wrong with celebrating a special occasion with a feast. Defence.lk is trying to twist the photo to suggest every single day Prabhakaran is living a luxurious life, but the fact that he has refused to be bought out for years proves this is not the case - he is not interested in money or a luxurious lifestyle.

They say Prabhakaran gave special treatment to his own son, but sent other people's sons to fight. But Prabhakaran's son was leading form the front lines last month when he was injured in combat. Prabhakaran is willing to let his son fight and die on the front lines for the cause of the Tamil people.

The Sri Lankan government continuously tries to benefit from contradictory statements. They will simultaneously say Charles Anthony was injured on the front lines, but then they will say he is protected and living a luxurious life in a foreign country. They are unable to make up their mind which story to publicize, so they foolishly publish both versions which are mutually contradictory.

Nilambare u are so shortsighted...

the indian election has a influence in our struggle for eelam...

Bharathiraja had planned to protest against Sonia Gandhi's [Images] rally in Chennai, but the Congress president called off her rally, citing Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam [Images] supremo Karunanidhi's [Images] ill health.

In an interview with rediff.com's A Ganesh Nadar, the director claims that the Congress is an "enemy of Tamils."

Why did you organise a black flag demonstration against Sonia Gandhi?

We have been highlighting the plight of Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka [Images] for the past six months. The central government has not taken any action. Tamils continue to die in Sri Lanka, from bullets and from starvation.

Foreign Secretary Shiv Shankar Menon has visited Colombo twice. External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee [Images] and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh [Images] have spoken to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa and asked him to protect the Tamil civilians.

That is useless. Every time someone visits Sri Lanka or speaks to them on the phone, the Sri Lankan president makes a press statement: 'India is with us in the war against terrorism'. And they continue killing helpless, unarmed civilians.

Are you blaming the Congress for the war in Lanka?

Yes. They are responsible. They can stop the war, but they are not doing anything.

In what way is the Congress responsible?

They are supplying arms and ammunition, training Lankan soldiers and giving money to the Lankan government to sustain the war.

Why would they do that?

They are taking revenge on behalf of Sonia Gandhi. Thousands of Tamils are getting killed for the sake of one lady.

The Congress has filed a complaint with the Election Commission, claiming you are asking people not to vote?

They are behaving like children. Let them fight us democratically. If they have a right to ask people to vote for them, we have a right to tell people not to vote for them. We never told people not to vote.

Who are you supporting in this election? Do you think that another political party will do more for the cause of Lankan Tamils?

We are not supporting any political party. We are canvassing against the Congress, not for any party. The people can vote for any party except the Congress.

Do you think demonstrating with black flags is democratic?

Of course! It is a democracy. This is a sign of protest. They are welcome to try and stop us.

What are you planning to do next?

Till the last day of canvassing, that is May 11, we are going to tour every Lok Sabha constituency that the Congress is contesting from and ask people not to vote for the Congress, which is the enemy of Tamils. After that, we will decide our next step.
