First pictures of the devastated war zone in Sri Lanka

The following are photographs taken by reporters as they flew over the final war zone in Sri Lanka in a helicopter. No one has been allowed into this area since the final battle. There are reports that tens of thousands of wounded civilians were killed on the final three days of fighting. The Sri Lankan government has since cremated all bodies, and dumped the ashes into the sea.

Dear Bhairav,

"If you call him, he won't hang up the phone...he will listen to you, and, if you stay 5 minutes on the line, he will brainwash you."

Karuna clearly understands that you cannot convince fanatics (in this case, Eelamoids). You can only convert them.

Peter says,

"I think TamilNet is playing the psychological game to keep IC interested."

It's not going to work- in fact it's going to be worse than useless after everyone finds out that Tamilnet was lying about Thalaivar's fate.

wijayapala said...

"Has news source such as Tamilnet ever lied ? If so please provide the evidence."

Tamilnet has lied by omission- it gave no impression at all that the LTTE was losing the war right up until Thalaivar was killed. Even then it is circulating rubbish that he is not dead.

No mention of Theepan, Vithusha, Thurga, Jeyam, Charles Anthony, etc. etc. all the LTTE leaders who were killed. Officially they are alive so you cannot properly mourn their deaths while the SLA cremates their stinking corpses. Very sad.

You are all in a state of shock because Tamilnet didn't do its job. Tamilnet was started in late 1990s to fill in wide information gaps on the war left by Sri Lankan media. D. Sivaram more or less predicted that the SLA would lose Eelam War III and he was correct. Since the CFA was signed, though, Tamil media has had to work overtime to cover up all the mistakes being made in the iyakkam.

This burst into the open with Karuna rebellion in 2004. Absolutely no warning from the Tamil media- all the Eelamoids wet their pants and ran around like scared chickens. Sivaram, who was Karuna's greatest cheerleader later claimed that he "knew all along" that Karuna had gotten in trouble. If Sivaram had known then why didn't he speak up and warn the diaspora what was going on????

Was Sivaram afraid that Eelamoids are too stupid/immature to handle the truth???
After Mavil Aru in 2006 things went further downhill. Tamilnet and other Tamil media then went silent and left defence.lk and new Sinhala media sites like DN, DW and Long Ranger to fill in the gaps. That is why all of you spend your time on those sites poking for holes in the military's story- without having a story of your own.

Thanks to this silence the Eelamoids are once again like headless chickens. Badri has finally grown a testicle and is acknowleging these failures but the rest of you are too ignorant to understand.

UN's Nambiar had guaranteed Nadesan and others safety if they surrendered:

UN, Norway and others all tricked them and double crossed them. But anyway they would have been dead even if they hadn't surrendered.

From the same article:

"Once more, the UN 24-hour control centre in New York patched me through to Nambiar in Colombo, where it was 5.30am on Monday. I woke him up.

I told him the Tigers had laid down their arms. He said he had been assured by Mahinda Rajapaksa, the Sri Lankan president, that Nadesan and Puleedevan would be safe in surrendering. All they had to do was “hoist a white flag high”, he said.

I asked Nambiar if he should not go north to witness the surrender. He said no, that would not be necessary: the president’s assurances were enough."

Guys... There is a some info coming out through very reliable sources that VP is going to release a new video within 3-4 days. After all, my hopes were revived this morning. I believe I know the reason, but I'm not getting into it because it will offend a lot of people.

I think we need to look into the real reason Karuna broke off from LTTE. We may hate Karuna for betraying the cause, but it wasn't just the cause he was tired of. He most likely left because of things he was perceiving in the leadership, lack of rationality.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

Killing of disabled people would be looked down as an extreme war crime. If there really were 3,000 disabled cadres that were killed, then Tamilnet needs to get itself together and mention it.

From what I can hear, Nadesan was bargaining for 300 leaders, family members and injured cadres. The numbers kept changing depending who they spoke to. KP said 2,000, then Nadesan said 1,000 to the public. But in his final conversations with Marie Colven the number was given as 300. The Sri Lankan government claims to have recovered 300 to 400 bodies. that day. So to me it looks like that may be the real number. If there really were 3,000 handicapped cadres (and I pray there weren't) then Tamilnet needs to stop sitting around and start mentioning them. They haven't been mentioned even once.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

I agree he is a traitor, but what I am trying to say is he became a traitor for a reason. Something made him lose the inspiration he had for 20 years. The story line is he was greedy for money. It may be true. But being someone in the upper leadership who interacted with the other leaders, he became too familiar with them. As the saying goes familiarity breeds contempt. He obviously didn't have the respect for Prabhakaran that the regular members had. The regular cadre and public don't get to see Prabhakaran. They never get to know Prabhakaran as a person. So to them, Prabhakaran is the image presented and taught to them throughout their lives as an infallible person beyond the human realm. Karuna on the other hand interacted with these leaders on the human level, and as such he probably became angry seeing the gap between the human Prabhakaran he saw and the super-human Prabhakaran the public saw. Envy, jealousy, and other things may have also played their part in his decision, but to me it is clear he had lost respect for Prabhakaran, and that was due to seeing the human side of him. There is nothing wrong with a human side, because everyone is a human. But Karuna would naturally be offended when his opinions or advice were over ruled based on the fact that Prabhakarans position was super-human, something he would not agree with from over-familiarity.

Again these are just my opinions, but I am trying to understand what has happened as much possible through reason rather than emotion or the official acceptable stories. It is clear Karuna was a traitor, but why did he become a traitor? The reason is he lost faith in the infallibility of Prabhakaran. Why would he lose faith? Because he interacted with and saw him as a regular ordinary fallible human, which led to familiarity and contempt. How much was he justified in this? That no one can know, but certainly Prabhakaran needed to heed the advice of senior advisors. Lack of this resulted in destruction. There is no way all of the senior advisors came up with this plan to trap everyone in 1 square kilometer of beach and get wiped out. This plan is only possible when everyone becomes "yes men" and there is no independent thinking.

["lack of rationality. such as ??"]

I don't want to speculate too much on this, but in the most general sense, military plans, possibly more. For example, you say:

"No one can understand the stupidity of VP to stay until the last days in the war zone."

And that is the exact irrationality I am referring to. We don't know the extent of it, but to some degree we can see there were very irrational decisions made. As people who didn't get to see the leaders up close, none of us can know how much they were affected by this. But from the results it is easy to judge. Someone like Karuna would have been in close circles with them, and he would have seen it in much more detail.

I have seen this in the case of a famous relative before who was totally normal and eventually became a completely irrational person - but the public who saw him from a distance still thought he was normal and superhuman. It's not insanity, it's something completely different. The fame had made his world view distorted. I am sure there is a psychological term for it, but not having studied that field I can't say what it is. Having experienced that with a relative, when I see this situation and the results I immediately see them matching closely. Again this is just my opinion so don't take it to be anything but that. Basically when you create a persona for someone as semi divine or amazing, those who are distant believe it, but those who are close, such as relatives see the huge gap between the person and the persona. It creates a dislike for the person or a lack of respect for the person. I am suggesting that this is what led Karuna to loose respect for Prabhakaran, and from there his lower qualities such as greed and envy took over and forged his path.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

["No one can understand the stupidity of VP to stay until the last days in the war zone."]

Just to highlight this point, I would even make the statement that this war was completely unwinnable for the Sri Lankan army. There is no way they could have won this war unless every single bad decision was made from the beginning, which is what happened.

All the LTTE had to do to drag on the war for 20 years was to disperse the forces and leaders throughout the island and revert to guerrilla warfare. Everyone with any amount of common sense knew that. It was a completely idiotic idea to back everyone into a tiny beach front, and try to defend an army 50 times your size in conventional warfare. This decision wasn't fair for our brave heroes who fought and gave their lives in this war. We could have won this war easily by dragging it on for 20 years.

Further, the idea to make our own civilian population suffer along with our soldiers was again an unfair decision. In fact this is the exact opportunity the Sri Lankan army was dreaming for. They could now bomb Tamil civilians, and the LTTE would be blamed by all sides.

Virtually every single decision made was the exact opposite of what any intelligent person would do. Everyone said the LTTE would fight in the forests. The first thing the LTTE did was vacate the forests and set up positions in the cities! Its reported the LTTE even cleared out the underbrush in the forests so it would be easier to see the incoming army. Every single thing they did was the exact opposite of what should have been done.

Bhairav said...

When he was shown to the material world ( Thai women, money, foreign trips, dining with key political figures etc) in the peace time, he put freedom struggles into back seat and opted materialistic world. Same thing happened to Mathaiya who was bought by RAW as well as Karuna.

There is no way all of the senior advisors came up with this plan to trap everyone in 1 square kilometer of beach and get wiped out. This plan is only possible when everyone becomes "yes men" and there is no independent thinking.

Many things said about VP are myth. Tamils were in the need of role model that where VP came in. But if he is selfish, why he would allow his children and wife in that horrible environment? VP has gone from "Hero" to "Zero" by the accounts of what happened in the last days of battle.

Tamils will hide the short-comings of VP as much as they can, since they are clearly the losers here.

GoSL's barbarism on our people surely find 100 times better leader than VP. Time will answer.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

["But if he is selfish, why he would allow his children and wife in that horrible environment?"]

He is not selfish or greedy, but irrational. My contention is that when you isolate someone with no peers (equals), they become irrational in decision making. Karuna, Soosai, Anton Balasingham, Thiruchelvam and Pottu were the only "equals" to balance Prabhakarans decisions, but over time some died and others lost their right to question and advise. That resulted in irrational decision making with no checks and balances.

As an example, if you took this plan and presented it to 20 intelligent commanders around the world and asked their opinions, all 20 would have come up with a better plan. The fact that the LTTE couldn't come up with a better plan means no one was allowed to come up with a better plan. It's not that no one was smart enough, but no one was allowed. Over confidence in a persons ideas led to failure. If that person is a genious, then you win. If that person is irrational, then you are in complete failure.

Stalingrad was a huge capital city. The city is 80 kilometers wide. PTK is a tiny village with mostly thatched or tiled roofs. I don't see any comparison between the two. I think everyone would agree it was an obvious mistake to try and hold onto physical land when 50,000 soldiers are coming with heavy fire power against their 2,000 to 3,000 cadre. This isn't a case of hindsight.

If we see the satellite photos of PTK, it isn't an urban area. Real urban warfare involves built up cities, like in the west. PTK is still mostly farmland interspersed with some buildings. Any city that has basically two or three main roads can't be called urban in this context. Urban refers to those cities with hundreds and thousands of cross roads, heavily built up with buildings, and no farm land. Even though people kept saying it was going to be urban warfare, there is no urban setting in PTK.

You have to understand the level of war crimes against humanity by SLA increased with the silent of IC - so we can't put all the blame on LTTE but they should have plan B for any worst case scenario. If they have made the exit on the "Anandapuram debacle", they would have save many lives and their leadership. Instead of making the exit on the Anandapuram debacle to save remaining value of your stock, you held onto your stock on market speculations( IC,Indian elections, diaspora uprising etc) that you can recover it. You had become penny stock in the last day that point you lost the leverage for any exit clause.

If they were going to stop, they should have backed down at Kilinochi itself. At that point the civilian population still hadn't suffered severely. By then the military leaders already knew their status as far as cadres left and casualties, etc. There was no way they were going to win with just 3,000 cadres left. Most of those were probably lost in the February 1st PTK counter attack. If the Sri Lankan army lost 1000+ in that attack, then most likely the LTTE also lost 1000+. The Sri Lankan army had over 150,000 soldiers to replenish their army with. The LTTE had no chance in conventional warfare with dwindling cadres.

The LTTE cadres were heroes and should be worshiped for their sacrifices. All mistakes were from the leadership. It is sad because Balraj even mentioned in 2008 that he knew the Sri Lankan army was trying attrition warfare (slowly reducing your cadre numbers by killing some everyday). He said "we already know they are doing this, but we will not fall for it, we have other plans." He knew exactly what they were doing, but after he died there was no one willing to act intelligently. If they are doing attrition warfare, then the solution is to disperse and spread out to stop them from being able to keep killing your cadres.

Then, they must have cleverly made decisions. All know thug rajapukse was contesting election with the support of JHU, JVP etc. That means War. So, LTTE must have well prepared for War. But, they were not prepared. During ceasefire period, they were busy only in marriages. If any LTTE leaders or members left, their first objective must be to settle down the account with rajapukse family even years passed. Tamil diaspora must concentrate on the civilians in the Nazi-concentration camps and should work hard to bring war crime charges against shit lanka. That is the ungent need of tamil diaspora now.

Honestly I've never seen a guy who is more fitter and strong in any Tamil guys. If LTTE had 1000 guys like him, it will be equivalent of 10,000 of their cadre strength.

Lack of training and unnecessary operations such as attack on the navy outpost last year, and one too many sea battles, made them to lose the cadres needlessly.

In my opinion, 20,000 well trained LTTE cadres would have hold the SLA easily.

Bhairav,

You brought up a very important point. This is something I noticed from a long time which I never mentioned because I didn't want to point out faults. The fact is the LTTE cadres have insufficient training and insufficient equipment. If you watch the videos of LTTE cadres fighting, and if you watch videos of US commandos fighting, you will understand what I am talking about. The LTTE cadres have not been provided the training they need.

Some simple examples, just watch how the LTTE cadres walk standing up firing their rifles towards enemy lines. No commando in the world will stand and fire while walking toward enemy lines. I have seen LTTE cadres do this in so many videos. There are many other things that show they have not received commando training as in western countries.

The other thing is they have very insufficient equipment. The US soldiers all have teflon body armor, helmets, etc. LTTE fighters sometimes go into combat in slippers and lungis. When you don't provide the proper equipment to your cadres you are handicapping them. In the past the Sri Lankan army also had under-equiped soldiers, but in the last year I have seen them all equipped with bulletproof vests, helmets, and good equipment.

Let's hope we learn from the many mistakes, but it is probably too late.

Possible strategy is to get 10,000 Tamils to enlist in armies around the world. Will have to get citizenship and then choose armies not at war.

But I really think the fighting is over. It would take 10 or 20 years to get back in a position to fight, and by then people will have forgotten and want to avoid disturbing the status quo. Better option right now is a peaceful, nonviolent, political movement mobilizing international support for better rights for Tamils.

"I think we need to look into the real reason Karuna broke off from LTTE. We may hate Karuna for betraying the cause, but it wasn't just the cause he was tired of. He most likely left because of things he was perceiving in the leadership, lack of rationality."

Interesting that you are asking this question over 5 years after the fact. A little late on the draw, eh?

Next to Balraj, Karuna was probably the greatest field commander in the LTTE. He led the 1st phase of Oyatha Alaigal III which drove the SLA all the way from Oddusuddan to Omanthai in one week, totally reversing all the SLA's 2.5 year gains from Jayasikurui. He had raised the Jeyanthan Brigade which participated in many battles since 1993. Thalaivar had selected him as the only field commander to participate in the peace process (Jeyam later filled his role, by which point there was no more peace process).

Eelamoids/LTTE bootlickers explain Karuna's defection as the result of a materialistic lifestyle. If this was true, Karuna would have left the organization much earlier, and at a time when things were going poorly (like 1995). In 2004, the LTTE was at the height of its power, coming very close to imposing the ISGA with international backing. Eelamoids have missed this simple disincentive for Karuna to split at such a crucial stage.

If Karuna had remained in the LTTE, it is very likely that a separate or near-separate Tamileelam would've been established by today. The LTTE could've launched Eelam War IV with a conventional war in the north and guerrilla war in the east, totally tying down the SLA and preventing victories from taking place. Today you would have been the ones laughing at us, not the other way around.

The key would have been to remove the air advantage. Rather than investing in air tigers, they should have invested in modern anti air craft systems. Once the Sri Lankan army upgraded their planes and helicopters, the heat seaking anti aircraft missiles no longer worked. This resulted in complete air superiority of the Sri Lankan army. Notice that no aircraft has been shot down since 2002, with the possible exception of one over the no fire zone.

Congress wanted hawkish and determined Sinhala regime to go after LTTE. When they found it on MR, they clearly jumped on him. You think they would have supported Ranil if he came to power? I seriously doubt it. Congress wouldn't like to expose themselves by supporting to a weakling as Ranil.

I totally agree here. Prematurely bringing the TAF into forces was one of the biggest mistakes LTTE made. It helped the SLAF dramatically. What was the necessary of sending the two planes on the suicide mission to Colombo? It was totally unnecessary operation. It helped the SLAF dramatically.

Bhairav,
I agree with you. Had Ranil come to power, he must have spent his time with the so called 'international safety net'. This situation must definitely not have come to Vanni civilians. Anyway, past is past. Now world has changed. We have to move our struggle diplomatically. It all depends on unified tamil diaspora. What happened to Vanni civilians will ever be in the hearts and minds of tamil people. It is impossible for tamil people to live with sinhala people forever after the massacre of Vanni civilians.

wijayapala said...

Karuna left the LTTE primarily because of a dispute he had with the central Vanni administration headed by Pottu Amman, Thamilenthi, and Nadesan among others (i.e. non-military cadre)- but not Prabakaran. Eelamoids now completely deny this, but the truth is that Thalaivar had highly admired Karuna and considered Karuna to represent the future of the Tamil race as a warrior people. It was a very special relationship with Karuna that led Thalaivar to allow a high level of autonomy to the Batticaloa/Amparai district command. Karuna was able to collect his own taxes and run his own operation quite independently from the Vanni. He had merited this treatment because he had produced results.

Thalaivar allowed this autonomous status for an important reason- Karuna and the Eastern cadre were Thalaivar's insurance policy in case there was a coup against him in the Vanni.

The Vanni establishment represented by Pottu & Friends did not like 1) Batticaloa having such an autonomous status from them and probably 2) were resentful of Karuna's special relationship with Thalaivar. In their view, the LTTE was supposed to be a highly centralized movement with de facto state structures. Karuna represented a deviation from this. It is probably true that Karuna was corrupt and pocketing the $$ for his own benefit. What the Eelamoids have forgotten is that Karuna using his own means- by hook or by crook- had kept the East under the LTTE. That should have been sufficient for the Vanni bunch to look the other way.

**Almost exactly the same thing happened to KP**. KP much like Karuna was fairly crooked and pocketed a great deal of diaspora funds while purchasing arms and other things. This corruption did not change the fact that KP was extremely good at what he did and delivered the goods on a reliable basis. KP also ran the overseas operation and was careful not to get into confrontations with foreign governments. It was under KP's relatively decentralized, mafia-like watch that the LTTE held control over the Tamil diaspora.

All this ended during the early CFA when Thamilchelvan went abroad and witnessed the utterly criminal nature of the LTTE international operation first-hand. He went back and reported to Thalaivar. KP was stripped of his arms procurement duties, and Castro's influence soared. It was under Castro's watch that the LTTE began doing very dumb things in foreign countries, like the Jeyadevan episode. Castro in the Vanni thought that he could run the international operation the same way that the Vanni operation was run!

Coming back to Karuna, Thalaivar respected him but the reality was that Pottu & Friends were much closer in proximity than Karuna. Thalaivar had to make a decision and he decided against Karuna. Near the end of the Good Friday Offensive in April 2004, Karuna made an agreement with Thalaivar to retire from politics/militancy and to be exiled to another country. The battle ended so quickly not because of Karuna's military incompetence, but because Karuna was not eager to get involved in a long drawn-out battle that would've ruined the iyakkam.

The LTTE failed to honor its agreement with Karuna. The Tigers gunned down Karuna's brother Reggie in Sept 2004 and murdered many other Karuna loyalists. From that point onward, it was war. Karuna had no choice but to ally with with the SLA for his survival. He launched a guerrilla campaign against the LTTE from Polonnaruwa, and by early 2005 the LTTE again lost control over most of the East.

Mahinda was later elected President, thanks to the LTTE, and the rest is history.

Saul said...

Obviously in retrospect, the mistake that LTTE made was to become a conventional army. They did not have the resources or time to do it.

A conventional army has staff, logistics, time for training, a developed officer cadre. LTTE had too few of these.

To stand up and trade blow for blow in set piece battles seems, again in hindsight, to be utter foolishness. Especially against the SLA that had clearly upped the ante in terms of manpower, training and resources.

That aside, in my opinion, the reason that LTTE did not go back to hit and run fighting was that Prabhakaran had 'gone soft'. Perhaps, he wasn't the fighter any more, he was a leader, used to a more sedate lifestyle, simply a more regular existence?

To go back to the old days, living in small groups and constantly on the move in the jungles with the accompanying physical and mental burnout would have been brutal.

But that still does not explain why he never made any moves to get out with his cadres intact, as it was becoming obvious in 2009, even to laymen that the end was coming.

Hatred is all time high now against Sinhalese after what they did in Wanni.

My uncle and his wife, who are Peradeniya educated, now live in Canada, said one time that 90% of Sinhalese are good people from his experience living through Sinhala neighborhood, now he changed that opinion...he said he never thought Sinhalese are this much barbarians. I met him on the funeral of 3 of my distant relatives killed on May 15 in the war zone by SLA.

While fighting only along the diplomatic channels for 5-6 months, there is also a need to build the army secretively and immediately. If the diplomatic channels fail (as happened within Ceylon from 1948 to 1972) after 5-6 months, the armed struggle will have to re-commence. do we have any other choice? The other choice would be to allow the colonization of all Tamils' land by the singhalas without any resistance at all!

My understanding is that the heat seeking missiles are not effective against the modern planes. In addition, it is cheaper to acquire light planes than to attempt to purchase missiles which are hard to get hold of, i.e. light planes are more easily acquired than the state-of-the-art missiles to shoot down kfir, mig, etc.

So, their direction is well justified. Whn they realized that they'd not have land to hold the planes and to take-off, the only choice is to use them for a suicide mission!

Hello People,
I really have to admit that quite sensible introspection going on now.But for sure its coming way too late.

Bhairav, the talk here is synonymous with what you heard. The end was similar to what Ogre posted in DW albeit less the spice he had added.

I was very sarcastically told that its better for the deceased that the truth never came out,for not only the truth is explosive it's very well capable of shattering the myth that VP was.Only point which is holding the SLDF back from publishing the truth is then their role too would come under scrutiny. But that's it.

I read a lot of how there's lot of hatred and there will be a backlash.Even during this crucial juncture you people are still not realising one thing.SLDF is not what it was when the Tiger's began and had a uprising.SLDF has improved leaps and bounds and the Tiger's were completely caught unawares.

VP,we have to agree is a Dictator in the sense that, what he told was the final LAW and no one had the power or authority to air a difference of opinion. The only person who had some sort of stance to do it was Anton who's demise hit VP hard.

He was already rattled by Karuna and when Tamilselvam and Balraj expired, the game was all over.VP was never going to hold so much land with the limited resources he had.But that period from 2002 - 2006 had given him false hope that the status quo would be maintained and he seemed to strongly believe he was invincible.

He firmly believed at the last moment, when push came to shove, the Big brother will forget everything and come to his aid just like how they saved his arse in Vadamaradchi, but that was not the case. Then he pinned too much hopes on the noise emanating from TN - I think he was lured into believing it as TN had given them a cold shoulder since May,1991.

Also the diaspora creating huge ruckus too lured him into thinking that it was a matter of time before GoSL halted the offensive. But he for once met his match in MR \ GR \ SF.The latter 2 having survived miraculously from his trademark attack. It was almost as if fate, they survived and he didnt have that luck.

Lets understand one thing first.Contrary to what you all think VP was a killer. He knew only that and that was the problem.Karuna I would say defected because,he has far more rationale thinking than VP.He knew separate country IS NOT possible at all.He read the writing on the wall very well.Other material liking's were only supplementaries.

Apart from that I dont see any worthy happenings on the war crimes front.Remember it's the US which can pursue it,that's what we have seen before. Its really phunny that US commits much more crimes elsewhere, but they are also the upholder's of justice. But they WILL NOT do anything that will affect their ally in the region,India. We all know what India's stance is.So dont have any hopes on that front as well

[But they WILL NOT do anything that will affect their ally in the region,India. We all know what India's stance is.So dont have any hopes on that front as well ]

Recently USA told India that there is no problem for China to have bases in SL. And it was done by US-PA-Commander Keating in India itself. Was this done to please India?

Now, the USA realizes that the USA/NATO gets nothing from the GOSL. Perhaps, the USA will use these to trade with the GOSL. Anyway, the chances of Eelam Tamils benefiting from these trades are low!

No, the use of the word "and" indicates the vermin are someone different from the LTTE leadership. It could grammatically refer to non-leadership LTTE or civilians. To me the use of the word squatters (those who come from another area and occupy anothers land) clearly indicates Tamils coming from Tamil Nadu. You may interpret it differently.

Whlie the purpose of the meeting was for the international community to work on a resolution to hold Sri Lanka accountable for its actions, Switzerland and its co-sponsors, evidently fearful of upsetting the alliance of repressive regimes that dominates the council, went so far as to grant the ambassador of Sri Lanka the right to participate in the meeting - and even to join the podium and speak first following their brief introduction.

This he did with much drama. Ambassador Dayan Jayatilleka walked in late, delivered a 30-minute harangue against Western "colonizers", and then walked out.

NGOs were also allowed to speak. A representative of the International Commission of Jurists said that Sri lanka’s position was "not only unfortunate", but also "inhuman", and he decried Sri Lanka's "indiscriminate and disproportionate use of force". He said that the Swiss-EU proposal was beneath the level of acceptability, but better than the Sri Lankan text, which he called a "joke". He complained that neither text addresses the violation of international humanitarian law or "the gross and systemic violations of human rights".

The meeting revealed the disturbing dynamics that govern the council. The European and Latin American states clearly thought themselves courageous in daring to criticize a country that belongs to the bloc of Non-Aligned states, and a country that is not Israel, Myanmar, or North Korea. On the other hand, their apologetic tone, followed by the vehement push-back by Egypt and numerous other states, highlighted the extent to which Western democracies are intimidated from applying minimum scrutiny to the world's worst abusers. Will U.S. membership, beginning late June, bring democracies some needed backbone?

So this is where Eelamtards are hanging out plotting their re-launch?I don't think the enormity of what's happened to Project Eelam has still hit you lot, yet.

The entire top three layers of LTTE command & control have been killed. Dead. Permanently. Even I'm shocked by the cold, calculated, ruthless efficiency of the SLA and GOSL in seeing this through to the end.

I know its still early days for your psyches to fully appreciate what's happened to your beloved cause. If only more of you Eelamtards had stopped wasting time protesting in London, Toronto, Germany and got down to Sri Lanka to fight for what you allegedly believed in. At least it would've shown the world that there was some commitment left in the Eelamist cause.

Instead we see Eelamtards rolling around the Parliament Square doing street theater with faked bloody bandages. Utterly pathetic and frankly an insult to your military leaders like Bhanu & the rest of the Charles Anthony Regiment annihilated in that encirclement.

Even that idiot hunger striker didn't starve himself to death. I guess you just can't get the committed cadres like they used to get in the old days.

Insurgencies can't be sustained via remote control (i.e. Eelamtard Diaspora) without boots on the ground. Most of those boots are now thankfully fertilising the Vanni soil.

A special gift to all Eelamtards, especially 'Peter'. I hate to say 'I told you so', but I did and none of you listened. With the inevitable consequences for Eelam.

This is just superb. It's like watching a pack of starving scorpions in pit consume each other.

Now, where's KP going to go with the money?
Will you guys let him escape with the money? Or will Eelamish Justice pursue him?
What happens to the monthly contributions you collect in London and other Eelam-in-Exile cities?
How do you show results for the contributions demanded by your tax collectors?

Did KP betray VP and the rest for immunity from death?

I mean, they had to be betrayed by someone else in the LTTE leadership. How else would they have all been caught and killed?

In theatrical terms, the end of the Eelam Project is a combination of Hamlet, The Godfather, Scarface (the Al Pacino version) and Reservoir Dogs.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hollywood and Bollywood aren't already planning a blockbuster version of this failed struggle.

Good that KP has finally cleared up all confusions; thereby, finally, putting an end to all the conspiracy theories.

As KP said, VP, his eldest two children, Pottu, Soosai and all senior leaders are dead.

LTTE no longer stands for violence. It has renounced terrorism and entered the political mainstream, as requested by the West to consider lifting the organization from the list of designated foreign terrorist groups.

As KP said, there are some cadres who are living amongst the public. If they decide to engage in random acts of violence, LTTE can not be held responsible. For the moment, LTTE is attempting to convince all cadres, civilians and Diaspora to adopt peaceful initiatives.

Diaspora no longer has excuses to engage in meaningless 'chit chat' about the fate of LTTE leadership.

Given that out people are at their most vulnerable at this point in time, and given the lack of Tamil organizations independent of the GoSL (EPDP, Karuna, etc., are are in GoSL), Diaspora must act as an independent, forceful body to fulfill immediate requirements:

1. Free all civilians from internment camps. As the screening process progresses, some have obviously been rated 'negative'; there is no reason to continue to detain these people.

2. Demilitarize our homeland. Given that the war is over, there is no reason to keep peoples's private property as 'high security zone'.

3. Devolve power to our people, allowing for a UN sponsored referendum to elect leadership.

Here, we do not clash head on with the IC. Rather, we are giving practical guidelines to implement the theoretical"reconciliation" process being promoted by the IC.

Any Tamil with genuine concern for our people should herewith limit emotional loose motion about the fate of the LTTE leadership.

Realize the need of the hour, see the bigger picture and act wisely.

Bhairav,

Your Sun God may have once been a reasonable warrior and tactician. But his (understandable) paranoia, isolation, lack of political acumen and ever-expanding waistline has destroyed your LTTE. Apart from the waistline, this reminds me of another failed tyrant from history.. I just can't seem to remember his name. Achim? Adlib? Perhaps you'll be able to help me out?

It shows again, the foolishness of relying on one person who does not allow for free debate and argument. His early successes were the assisted by a truly stupid GOSL that underestimated the LTTE. Just like your infallible VP underestimated the current GOSL. But that's for the historians to discover.

My fervent hope is that Eelamtards keep looking for a 'strong man' figure; one who does not accept advice and kills his rivals.

Thanks in advance. I know you Eelamtards won't let us down.

Peter,

You still don't get it do you? This 'homeland' you speak of belongs to all Sri Lankan citizens, irrespective of their so-called ethnicity.

As for the your demands, they're beyond farcical. Your organisation is not in a position to make any demands for UN or IC-sponsored anything other than immediate improvements in conditions in internment/holding camps.

Here's the latest from Gordon Brown, your Great White Protector.

Gordon Brown yesterday backed Pakistan’s military drive against Taliban extremists in the Swat Valley.

He also urged other countries to step up humanitarian assistance for refugees fleeing the violence.

Mr Brown called the offensive ‘a vital drive’ by the government to assert its authority over militants who have rejected Pakistan’s constitution and judiciary.

However, he acknowledged that the fighting came at a ‘high price’ in terms of innocent civilians ‘tragically displaced’

The Real Story

Certain leaders of the LTTE contacted the army and wanted to surrender. Namingly Nadesan, pulidevcan and Ilango, As a gesture of their surrender they released POW's and came with white flags. But this was just a diversionery tactic.
The LTTE began a massive operation after that with 500 black tigers when the army was expecting prabha to surrender like Nadesan etc... Initially the LTTE took over the 3 bunkers of the 53rd division for around 3 hours and and stole an ambulance. Then the army counter attacked using thermobaric weapons reducing around 300 tigers into ashes. Around 40 SLA gave their lives to the motherland. After this they found a body which resembled the body of prabha in the ambulance and out of euphoria told the president who was in jordan and he declared victory. On his arrival on sunday however the DNA test came out negative and bascially the govt was “you know what” in their pants and thats why the victory speech wasn’t made on sunday.
Hence the army started to look for prabhas body like mad dogs and found prabha hiding in the kadolana with his youngest son Balachandran. According to reports Prabha was in shock that no black tigers were around. Also after the failed attempt all the top LTTE leaders surrendered to the army and prabha was brought to colombo.
Prabha was borught to col, interogated and executed under the orders of GR. Even the president had no idea until he was killed, because GR felt that HE would feel sympathetic towards Prabha.. After he was executed prabha was air droped to pudumathalan to be found by soldiers. Wife and Daughter surrendered as well after the failure of the attack and they were executed along with the other leaders and the younger son. The executions were done by SF and commando teams

KP is a master of illusions. First he said VP is alive, now dead. Wait until he releases the video within days. Our leader is alive and all this is to humiliate GOSL. They will go to elaborate celebrations only to find out our leader is still alive. The video is ready for release, but KP wants to hold it for few more days to monitor the response to his latest statement. Friends, just wait and see what would happen. This is a stroke of a genius. Cant wait until the video is released to the general public. I have seen it already. Gotta go. Too many things to do and no time to spend time on this blog. Badri, peter keep the flame going. What do you mean his two oldest children are dead? Is there a third somewhere?

What is 'our homeland' and what are its physical boundaries?

What do you mean by 'devolve power' and who are 'our people'?

You eelam supporters are stupid, well actually not stupid, some of you are quite smart, just losing the plot. You stupid b@stards.

You idiots, right now the biggest card you can play are the IDPs.

I made my plea on Defence Wire with folded hands, I told them that instead of military posturing they should be concerned with the IDPs because this was the new war which they could lose. So far, not one has responded to my post.

Listen. As an Indian, I support the SL government 100%. Always have always will. F*ck the LTTE.

F*ck Prabhakaran.

I said that on DefenceWire a long time ago, I am saying it on Puligal now.

F*ck the LTTE.

F*ck Prabhakaran.

However, I supported the SL government because of MOTHER INDIA. I will continue to do so. I WILL NEVER FORGET RAJIV GANDHI.

But you guys are also part of my BLOOD. Do you understand that? Tamils in SL are part of my genes, my BLOOD and what happens to them concerns me.

An example: You Tamils on Puligal are like my cousins, retard cousins, but cousins all the same. BLOOD.

If the IDPs suffer, I suffer. MOST Indians are like me; we don;t give a f*ck for the LTTE but we CARE for Tamils in SL.

If you can prove that the IDPs are suffering, keep saying that, there will be a lot of concern in India and the rest of the world. we will be forced to act - if not now, in a year or two. Morally, spiritually, politically this makes sense. The SL government - I will ALWAYS support them - will not find it so easy.

But some of you guys do not understand and keeping talking of an armed struggle; oh well.

Tamilnet has failed again. Last week they were quoting KP that Prabhakaran is alive, yesterday they were quoting a never before heard thalapati that Prabhakaran was alive. Today KP says Prabhakaran is dead, and what does Tamilnet say?

"It isn't important to talk about whether he is alive or dead."

But wait, why then did you keep saying he was alive? As soon as it is confirmed he is dead, now you say it isn't important to talk about? You quoted the exact same person (KP) 3 or 4 days ago! But today you don't feel he needs to be quoted?

So once again, up till the very last second, Tamilnet deceives the Tamils and still refuses to announce even the deaths of Theepan, what to speak of Prabhakaran. I understand the emotions all people feel, but this is undisputable denial. When some sketchy unheard of source that has been "identified by a senior reporter in Sri Lanka" says Prabhakaran is alive, you publish it right away. When KP, the last person in the world to speak to Prabhakaran, says he is dead - complete silence followed by an editorial saying "it's not important to discuss who is dead or alive".

The Tamil people are looking for answers to put their doubts and sadness to rest. You are torturing them by doing things like this. Let them know the truth and mourn for their heroes so they can move on with their lives.

If the plan is to continue the LTTE as a political movement to bring about change in Sri Lanka, then its destined to fail. What is needed is a completely new, democratic organization created by the Tamil diaspora around the world.

Do you think any country is going to want to discuss with an organization that fought a war for 30 years using suicide bombings? There is nothing to be gained by holding on to the shell of the LTTE and trying to start a political dialogue.

Countries are ready to listen to "Tamils", not to the "LTTE". As far as they are concerned, LTTE is still the same LTTE. They won't understand that the military wing has been destroyed and now its a nonviolent saint. If we want success in a political process, then we need to start fresh, cutting all ties to violence. Keeping an international arms smuggler wanted by Interpol as the spokesman for the Tamil civilians is just shooting ourselves in the foot. Find some mother Teressa type people in the diaspora and put them up on the pedestal. That's the only way the world will listen.

Badri,

Forget Tamilnet or Pathmanathan. When we see the video of Prabhakaran, we can clearly see that it's Prabhakaran. Some media try to confuse us in this manner but we all can tell that Prabhakaran is dead as normal human being. As I said earlier, Tamil diaspora is in over confidence and they don't want to come to the reality. We , Tamils, have more responsibily than this propaganda to acheive our nation. We have to raise our voice to the Tamils to be resettled down to their own land. We have to focus on that issue. Political games and other intelligence background seem to confuse us but we have to be confident to acheive our eelam in any price. Let us talk about that.

its standard, if head of the country /arm group dead. there have to re-build internal structure then they have to inform the public. also they have to be 200% sure before saying he is no more. nothing wrong with it.

at this stage Tamils have more advantage if vp dead than alive,so SP admitted he is no more.

To add to what I said, I know by now that the SL 'press' and 'non press' source are also full of $hit.

Plans within plans, circles within circles :)

anyway what I can tell you from a high level meeting is that indeed the democratic path is to be tried - the need of the day is for co-ordination between all segments of Tamil diaspora residing in western nations. This co-ordination will enable unified and simultaneous political attack on the terror state of Sinhala Lanka.

By this what is hoped for is say tomorrow the terror animal state does 'ABC' against the Tamil people, then there will be a co-ordinated effort by diaspora activists and lobyists to bring the ABC to the attention of the respective governments where they reside. Tamil political power in the west needs to be harnessed and focused to magnify its effect. So my friends like Peter and Badri, your talents would certainly be helpful in these times, make sure you are heard, our people need people like you who can think logically and with a clear head.

Once when I had the opportunity to attend a lecture by Dr. Seneviratne, he made an excellent point, he refused to deal with anyone but Tamil youth in the future - he found older Tamils were too concerned with their own prestige than doing anything constructive - so the youth are the future and must be involved.

They were represented at this meeting but don't let the chance pass you guys by either, I am sure you can figure out who to talk to in your areas to get involved.

So right now it doesn't matter whether VP is alive or dead, I will not discuss the military aspects of what was said, but time will tell if they are needed and if they will come to be reality - for the now lets play politics we don't need VP for that.

Claims and scepticism sans evidence
[TamilNet, Monday, 25 May 2009, 00:53 GMT]

The head of the LTTE’s Department of International Relations on Sunday announced that the LTTE Leader Velupillai Pirapaharan attained martyrdom fighting the military oppression of the Sri Lankan state on 17 May. However, the LTTE’s Department for Diaspora Affairs (DDA) told TamilNet that it would not comment without explicit authorisation from the LTTE leadership. In the meantime, the Intelligence Department of the Tigers reiterated on Sunday that the LTTE leadership is safe and it will re-emerge when the right time comes.

Tamil Nadu leaders, Mr. Vaiko and Mr. Pazha Nedumaran have expressed scepticism Sunday on the reports of Mr. Pirapaharan's demise.

Meanwhile, the general opinion prevails is that Colombo has failed in conclusively establishing the evidence for Pirapaharan's demise. It has not taken any credible efforts to verify evidence either.

Failure in the responsibility of coming out with the truth also falls on the Indian Establishment. The Indian Intelligence has recorded all the details of LTTE leader's physiognomy when it has taken him into custody in mid-80's in India. It should have verified his death with evidence at least for its legal purposes. But observers think that India maybe having its own reasons for its silence.

Even 'omnipotent' powers of the information age have not come out with any authentic statement.

As TamilNet is being heavily pressed by its readership to know the truth, it has become a necessity to state that TamilNet doesn't take any responsibility for any of the stands taken, as these are beyond its independent verification.

Badri, I repeat, chill. You can critique all your traditional sources all you want but perhaps they too are under some constraints.

Do not be so immature; as I said the SL sources are also full of $hit.

Remember Kennedy - victory has a thousand fathers, defeat is an orphan..etc.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

That last article by Tamilnet is just sad. I don't know what to say. The Sri Lankan army showed the body, hundreds of people went and saw it. They showed it the next day too so you can see the natural decay. What more evidence does anyone want as proof? Do you want to have the body delivered to everyone's house to inspect? They showed the body of his son, they showed the body of Soosai, they showed the bodys of a dozen other mid rank leaders.

What Tamilnet has done here is they could not avoid publishing KP's statement, because they quoted him last week that Prabhakaran was alive. So rather than just post KP's letter in full (which is what any news source should have done), they instead make an article about there being no conclusive evidence, and mention KP's statement in passing. Now they can not be blamed for not posting KP's statement.

But look at it closely. For the first time, KP's statements came out on all the other Tamil sites first. Tamilnet did not publish his statement until much later. As soon as the other websites came out with his letter, Tamilnet posted an "editorial" saying "it isn't important to discuss if Prabhakaran is alive or dead". None of this is coincidence.

There is obviously chaos in the international wings now that basically everything has been wiped out over night. When a great person leaves, there is bound to be chaos.

We can't really blame tamilnet, i see them as the media who probably do not have a clue what has happened.

Personally i have some doubts about the appearance of VP's body. Also quick cremation without proper autopsy etc is highly suspicious.

Its very hard to bring back pople who are dead back to live i.e soosai, potu , vp. If they claim they all alive. But its easy to say they are dead then bring the back latter on if they are still alive.

What is puzzling me none of the known leaders of LTTE are making much statement at the moment.
Except SP.

He seems to be doing the right thing. Accepting important things. Setting cause of the next stage of the strugle.

Viiko and Nadumaran, are unlikely to know anything about VP. They find it difficult accept the loss. Also this has bigger impact in Tamil Nadu. The eelam struggle is a manifestation of their won desire of tamil nationalism etc.

We have to do what ever needed to prevent the destruction our identity as Tamil people.

Obviously we are going to try and go for Quebe type power sharing.

But there also another option just want to get an idea why its not considered.

That is reunification of North - East Of Sri Lanka with Tamil Nadu i.e India. Would that put cat among pigeons ? would not that at least protect Tamils against genocide ?

Indian government will never agree with that. It would be best for us, but there is no way India will just cut another country in half and take it. It could never get away with that, since Kashmir, Assam, Manipur, etc., are all waiting. Imagine if China or Pakistan decide to follow suit.

Sadly could it be that most of the LTTE leadership is not alive now, except SP? It appears that there are some leaders in Jaffna (Vetrikumaran), Trino, Bati and Amparai.Only they can issue statements?

Even thuogh the Indians killed 1000s of tamils, it'd be safer for Eelam Tamils to become another state of India instead of unifying with TN. Good thing about India is that every state is free to have its identify whether it is Kashmir or Punjab!

If we hodl a referendum among Eelam Tamils and if we were to give choices like 1) total independence, 2) federal within Shit lanka, 3) another state of India, I feel that the choice #3 would be preferred.

without the LTTE's armed strength, independent eelam is hard to achieve/maintain.

After India has destroyed the LTTE, becopming another state of India is the best choice for eelam tamils!

Considering the fate of Tamils in GOSL/SLA custody. Thats good option, perhaps KA has got that plan up his sleeves.

I think holding a referendum in the North East is not possible unless a miracle. Sri Lanka will never let the voice of the people be recorded through a vote. People can't even speak their mind without fearing death.

It will be a long process of convincing Sri Lanka to allow freedom of expression and belief. Until freedom of expression exists, no one can openly say we want an independent state even by peaceful means such as parliamentary vote.

UP to 30,000 civilians trapped in the last days of Sri Lanka's civil war have been left seriously disabled with lost limbs or paralysis, The Australian has learned.

Sri Lanka's Government insists no civilian casualties were sustained in the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, but French-based aid organisation Handicap International said yesterday that it was preparing a "huge" number of prosthetic limbs for traumatised survivors.

HI Sri Lanka chief Satish Mishra said the group had delivered more than 1000 sets of crutches, wheelchairs and other devices to civilians in refugee camps in the country's north and east.

"The consignment is huge," Mr Mishra said. "In total, around 9 per cent of people within the IDP camps will require prosthetic or orthetic support such as calipers. It's an extraordinary figure. If there were 250,000 to 300,000 people there (in the conflict zone) then we're talking about 25,000 to 30,000 people who require these."

UN Head Ban Urges Sri Lanka To Probe Human Rights Abuses

COLOMBO (AFP)--United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon asked Sri Lanka to probe alleged human rights violations committed during the government's defeat of the Tamil Tiger rebels, a joint statement said Sunday.

now that LTTE is out of teh picture there are 3 options
1) being part of SL
2) independent state
3) merging with India

1) be prepared for more genocide and colonialisation of Tamil land
2) Not feasible,
3) Feasible, Indian nationalists will support a merger due to cultural (Tamilnadu and Eelam) and strategic military lonks.

History has proven that Sinhalese and Tamils can never co-exit.

Forgive me for asking, Isn't the opinion of the government of Sri Lanka have any relevance in the matter? You know with the north&east being a part of sovereign Sri Lanka and all? Does 'international law' ring a bell?

You Tamils still don't GET IT, do you?

The whole of Sri Lanka belongs to all Sri Lankans. If there is to be any change to that ALL Sri Lankans should vote in favor of it.Not just the Tamils.Just as Tamils can't decide that Toronto should be made a a state of India just because it's in THEIR interests.Of course it's a forgone conclusion how Tamils would vote in case of such a referendum.Thats why such a referendum isn't necessary in the first place. But the question is, is it fair by other Sri lankans to hold a referendum excluding 85% of the population?

What about the Muslims?

I think the last thing that the already shattered diaspora want at this time is a gang war between various factions of LTTE international division.

But seems, that's exactly what is going to happen.Nedumaran's pressnote on Pathivu was too harsh on KP.Seems these people are pressing the self-destruch button.

This is the problem you have to face when you are a one-person centric organization - Like in goold old ancient times, when the Kind days,we have bloody days later to decide whoz the next king.

With a Billion$ to play with, everyone including Nedu \ Poiko all will want their share of flesh.

All this should be music to the ear's of GoSL.They can conveniently pass down their own solution saying that there is no group to discuss with

Dear Badri,

"Countries are ready to listen to "Tamils", not to the "LTTE". As far as they are concerned, LTTE is still the same LTTE. They won't understand that the military wing has been destroyed and now its a nonviolent saint. If we want success in a political process, then we need to start fresh, cutting all ties to violence."

That is a great idea. Why don't you take the first step by removing the LTTE flag from this website, and inserting a new symbol?
