Tamils in concentration camps die of starvation as Sri Lanka leaders live luxuriously

The Sri Lankan government has recently released some old family pictures of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, and claimed they show Prabhakaran living a very luxurious life. I am sure everyone in the world has pictures of themselves celebrating some special occasion. There is nothing wrong with celebrating a special occasion with a feast. Defence.lk is trying to twist the photos to suggest every single day Prabhakaran is living a luxurious life, but the fact that he has refused to be bought out for years proves this is not the case - he is not interested in money or a luxurious lifestyle.

They say Prabhakaran gave special treatment to his own son, but sent other people's sons to fight. But Prabhakaran's son was leading from the front lines last month when he was injured in combat. Prabhakaran is willing to let his son fight and die on the front lines for the cause of the Tamil people.

The Sri Lankan government continuously tries to benefit from contradictory statements. They will simultaneously say Charles Anthony was injured on the front lines, but then they will say he is protected and living a luxurious life in a foreign country. They are unable to make up their mind which story to publicize, so they foolishly publish both versions which are mutually contradictory.

They show a picture taken during peace times of Prabhakaran's son celebrating his birthday. During peace time there was no shortage of food, or difficulties for the people. Do they expect Prabhakran's 6 year old son should be dressed in military dress during peace time on his birthday? Again they show a picture of Prabhakaran's son riding a bicycle during the peace times, claiming it is somehow wrong for a child to ride a bicycle.

They show a picture of an NGO worker eating on the beach during the peace time, and claim there is something wrong with that. Do NGO workers not eat food? Should NGO workers live off of air? Again, this picture was taken during peace time when there was plenty of food for everyone. It was not like it is now in the no fire zone, where the Sri Lankan government denies food to more than 150,000 civilians, while the government leaders enjoy sumptuous meals in Colombo.

There have already been a number of starvation deaths reported inside the government detention camps. While the Sri Lankan government lets imprisoned Tamil civilians die of starvation in their custody, the leaders like Rajapaksa enjoy sumptuous meals in Colombo and on international trips. Take for example the fact that during a short period of less than 2 years (2006 to 2007), Mahinda Rajapaksa spent around 473 million rupees on trips abroad. This same person wants to criticize Prabhakaran for giving a birthday cake to his son in 2002 during peace times.

Let anyone who wants to criticize old family photos first look at the house, car and food that Mahinda Rajapaksa uses today. Maybe Defence.lk can show us photos, side by side, of Prabhakaran's place of residence, fighting with his people in the no fire zone, compared to Mahinda Rajapaksa's luxurious house in Colombo.

Mahatma Gandhi’s India allowed today the massacre of more than 2000 Eelam Tamils. Many thousands injured. No medicine available. Only one word to describe the horror: Holocaust

While, India’s agenda is going on smooth. What is the “score” demanded by India in that agenda to GOSL terrorists? 10000 may be 50000, perhaps all ?

Thileepan,

Good idea, but it would be better if something could be done in the Google system.

Benefits are that the Google site can't be hacked, no one can see any of our private details, and we don't have to do multiple log-ins. I usually post here while checking email and Reader. Although, I think privacy is the main concern for most people.

Blogger isn't the best, but it is the most practical for accessing via phone as well.

TamilNet news item does not mention the fighting from Saturday.

As I wrote yesterday, past 48-hours witnessed the most intense fighting yet. Shells in their 1000s were fired in the 5km2 area.

SLA really was pushing for it.

I thought the reason was the May 11th UN meeting. Could have been something to do with the TN elections as well.

Sinhalese are apprehensive about the kind of coalition may emerge after the elections. I wouldn't be surprised even if they kill thousands more today.

m.g.k,

Just saw it. The trouble is that it is something they -the other side- have plenty of. They can easily steal the idea from us and do ten times more. Our advantage is the number of people we have in capitals. Since this is late stage, most are in favor of continuing with practical initiatives, as are happening now. Good idea, but may prove to be too little too late is most people's first reaction. We'll see how things evolve and incorporate it in to the summer strategy, primarily targeting M&S.

Ashokkumar,

I'll give more specific answers to the questions you had for Puthumatalan Peter:

"Is it possible for the remanining Tigers in the NFZ to escape, in case if they decide to do it?"

It would be extremely difficult for individual Tigers to escape and impossible to conduct a mass retreat- and where would the Tigers escape to????

"What will happen to the injured Tigers?"

I wouldn't be surprised if injured Tigers were being mixed with the civilian population and getting evacuated by the Red Cross.

"What will happen to their heavy weapons and other arms?"

The LTTE has already lost most of its heavy weapons after the SLA overran facilities. That is the problem with guerilla war- you simply can't inflict a lot of casualties with hit and run attacks.

"Will there be some other point to safeguard sea Tigers and their assets?"

The Sea Tigers are mostly finished. Their boat warehouses were located inland to avoid attacks by the SLN, but the SLA has since taken control of the territory where they were located. The LTTE's control over coastline is shrinking, and there aren't really any safe points where to bring in supplies.

"We do not expect Prabhakaran and other top leaders to remain there and get caught."

That's what I thought too- Thalaivar would run away to fight another day (or perhaps just simply run away and become another useless Eelamoid living abroad). At this point, however, escape would be too difficult. The fact that Thalaivar has already sent his wife, daughter, and youngest son Balachandran abroad earlier suggests that he won't be leaving.

Thalaivar may have decided that he doesn't want to live in exile with virtually no hope of rebuilding his shattered army.

Puthumatalan Peter writes,

"As I have said before, there will be a conventional strike if India decides to pull out, during coalition negotiations or after a new government takes power.

Otherwise, Tigers appear to be all prepared for non-conventional activities.
"

What sophisticated Eelamoid analysis: "Either the Tigers will use conventional tactics, or they will use unconventional tactics." Sivaram must be turning in his shallow grave.

The LTTE won't be able to conduct a conventional attack because it lacks the resources and necessary maneuver space. The LTTE had far more and better opportunities to strike conventionally in earlier fighting. The fact that it could not do so demonstrates that something has gone awry.

As for guerilla warfare- Puthu Pete has made the error of assuming that the LTTE switches between conventional and unconventional tactics, when the history shows that the LTTE has used both tactics *simultaneously* to achieve its objectives. Generally the pattern had been: guerilla war in the East to tie down SLA forces, conventional war in the north to achieve decisive victories against the SLA's massed forces.

The LTTE's recent showing in guerilla warfare has been pitiful, and probably reflects the loss of Karuna who had led guerilla missions in the East in the past. The LTTE could really have disrupted the govt's war effort by blowing things up in the South and the East, forcing the SLA to divert resources to those areas. Why wait for the govt to overrun the LTTE's territory and demolish its conventional fighting ability????

wijayapala said...

FreedomFighter,

"If we try to play with them in convetinal way, we will have havey losses."

You've forgotten that the LTTE has fought conventionally for the last two years and already has suffered heavy losses as a result. Clearly Thalaivar had not taken into account that he would be losing this "iruthi por."

Upul,

"Ranil openly admits extensive help provided by India to shit lanka by military means:"

Did Ranil specify what support India offered? Military hardware- tanks, APCs, artillery munitions etc?? Or combat troops as Puthu Peter thinks? The Daily Mirror only mentions intelligence cooperation and training.

wijayapala said...

Bhairav,

"DBSJ, should tell us what solutions are on the table for Tamils, lets say, LTTE is out of picture?"

Why don't you first tell us what is the solution on the table for Tamils with the LTTE still in the picture????

More battlefield defeats, humiliations, and watching the int'l community and New Delhi ignore your whining?

"On the topic of David 'BS' Jeyraj, I thought, being a JHC old-boy, you would know of his history vis-a-vis LTTE and RAW. His latest frustration at the Diaspora is most heartening; shows that we have manged to prick RAW in some nasty places."

Puthu Pete might not have noticed that there were many diaspora Tamils writing supportive comments to DBSJ. Therefore we can conclude either that 1) RAW is manipulating a sizable chunk of the diaspora or 2) there are plenty of non-Eelamoid diaspora Tamils who have something constructive to contribute.

Canadian newsflash: only 5,000 Eelamoids showed up for a protest in Toronto- out of a 200,000 diaspora Tamil community. Good thing that they have no intention of going to SL to save the LTTE- the LTTE could use the extra dumbasses in its current state.

Of course you animals would love us to follow DBSJ's advice so its easier for you to herd Tamils into the 'gas chambers' more peacefuly. After all that is what we did for decades, followed the advice of losers like DBSJ, the democratic and peaceful path. Meanwhile you animals happily went about killing our people and stealing our homes.

Haha fat chance that will be repeated, you will bleed untill we are free...and we WILL be free of you animals, there is no doubt about it, YOU have ensured it.

(a) No sinhala govt will ever ( agree/ capable of arriving at ) for meaning full devolution through negotiation.
(b) general mind set of the sinhalese is that tamils cannot be acomodated within sri lanka on an equal footing.
(c) It is ltte’s past and present startegy is the main factor that sri lanka tamil issue is internationalised.
(d) Without it being internationalised. it cannot be resolved.

Upul and others, a note about David 'BS' J.

This guy, a journalist, was recruited by The Hindu in the 80s. During the IPKF days he used to attempt to meet with senior LTTE commanders for "interviews". His persistence to get close with Pottu Amman, and members of that wing, arose suspicions amongst LTTE cadres. Thumpan, who was acting as a liaison, told DBS int he nicest way that he could not meet seniors because there are suspicions about him, because he worked for The Hindu.

In those days, RAW guys assigned to Tamil affairs were juveniles. Weeks later, The Hindu fired DBS on charges of him writing articles against the IPKF.

So, a few days later, DBS returned to the LTTE, seeking meetings with senior cadres. He was no longer with The Hindu, so we were supposed to trust him. Anyways, story went, he was arranged to meet a Sea Tiger (in those they weren't known as Sea Tigers) commander where he was also supposed to meet his maker.

Somehow, news leaked, possibly via RAW moles, and DBS escaped.

Later, he began writing for The Hindu's Front Line magazine, almost as the chief correspondent on Tamil affairs. Yes, the same guy who was apparently fired by The Hindu started writing for its flagship magazine.

There can be little doubt about DBSJ's employees. Also, he is rightly furious with the LTTE for trying to send him off.

Upul said...

Peter, I am not quite sure what you mentioned The sea tiger commander was killed somehow with d 'bs' jeyaraj passing info ?

Is there a way for us to exchange email using our gmail accounts, without me or you passing out email addresses ?

Please let me know how.

Peter said...

Upul,

Sea Tiger commander wasn't killed. DBS was supposed to be taken to meet him, but the plan was for something to happen on the way. But DBS fled the area, instead of turning up for the meeting. Suspicion then was that the plan had been leaked by a RAW mole.

What I meant was why do you think we haven't been culling you fcuking animals in the south? Did you think the reach is not there to pay you back for all the attrocities unleashed on our people? THAT is what I am talking about you will get the payback, but not yet, we don't want to distract the world with howls of bleeding animals now do we, let them see what the animals truly are a little longer, then Tamil animals like me can start culling you fcukers in the south. I really appreciate your educating me (an ignorant moda banda) about the Indian Army's combat presence in Sri Lanka. I could not find any evidence for this anywhere except for Badrinath's article about 200 Indian soldiers getting killed in action. Clearly this is a very hush hush operation and the Eelamoids have really outdone themselves getting this top secret classified information (we moda bandas are so gullible we probably just blabbed this story to one of you for free).

This leads to me to wonder why the Eelamoids have not made this secret public knowledge. After all, the moda bandas will go berserk if they found out that Indian soldiers again are on Sri Lankan soil. Wimal Weerawamsa and his followers made a lot of noise about having the Indians simply setting up a field hospital for the relocated Tamils. Makes me wonder why Tamilnet does not publish an expose that will drive the Sinhalese against the Rajapaksas while also getting TN mobilized against New Delhi.

But then again I'm just a moda banda totally lacking the Eelamoid intellect. I wish us Sinhalese were living so happily and well as those 200,000 Tamils still in LTTE territory.

PS- I wasn't aware that we killed Ilanthiraiyan. I thought we moda bandas were so incompetent we could never kill even a single Tiger. Well thanks for that info.

Journalist who reported on internment camps in Sri Lanka tells his story

* Nick Paton Walsh
* The Guardian, Sunday 10 May 2009
* Article history

A Channel 4 News team was deported from Sri Lanka yesterday . Here its Asia correspondent, Nick Paton Walsh, tells what happened:

When Sri Lanka's defence secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, rang he got quickly to the point.

"Is this Channel 4? You have been accusing my soldiers of raping civilians? Your visa is cancelled, you will be deported. You can report what you like about this country, but from your own country, not from here."

Our 'crime' had been to broadcast a report from internment camps at the northern town of Vavuniya, which can only be reached with the permission of the Sri Lankan army. The army orchestrates the visits and escorts you wherever you go. But someone working for us had managed independently to get a camera into the camps and record a series of interviews. The allegations were startling: bodies left for days, children crushed in the rush for food, the sexual abuse of women, disappearances.

We went out of our way to get a government response: the army spokesman, Brigadier Nanayakkara, eventually agreed to appear on camera saying any wrongdoing would be punished.

The day after the broadcast I went to the media centre for national security. There [military censor] Lakshman Hulugalle explained that I had damaged the country's image and would later hear of their 'measures' against me. Three days later came the call from the defence secretary.

What followed was 10 hours in police custody, searches of our vehicle and a barrage of questions, asked to sign statements which we had not given. We were finally driven to the capital, Colombo, and deported.

Now that we're out of the country Mr Hulugalle claims we have admitted we had 'done something wrong'. That is nonsense. The government is intolerant of a critical press. Journalists get killed, most notoriously Lasantha Wickrematunge, an editor assassinated in January. The line we at Channel 4 crossed was at passport control.

But you realise what crossing the line for Sri Lankan journalists means.

Japan needs to “play a more active role” in confronting the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka, four international organizations said in a letter today to Prime Minister Taro Aso of Japan. Ahead of today’s ministerial-level meeting at the United Nations Security Council, the groups urged Japan, as a council member, to support urgent formal action on the situation.

In the letter, Human Rights Watch, the International Crisis Group, Amnesty International, and the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, all of which work closely on Sri Lanka, said:

“We believe that Japan, a powerful player on the humanitarian stage and the largest international donor to Sri Lanka, has an important role to play in saving countless civilian lives, as well as to implement aid policies that ensure sustainable peace, human rights and development in Sri Lanka. It is time for Japan to show that it is prepared to shoulder its responsibilities.”

The organizations said that both the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Sri Lankan government “have shown wanton disregard for human life in violation of international humanitarian law.” They said that the Security Council’s informal consideration of the situation in Sri Lanka was not sufficient and that “formal meetings of the Security Council must be held urgently so that the Council can take the necessary measures to address the humanitarian and human rights crisis.”

The organizations called on Japan “to take a more robust stance on the continuing suffering of the civilian population in Sri Lanka” and “to support action at the Security Council in New York, and to support prompt consideration of the situation in Sri Lanka by the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.”

SLA barrage claims the life of Ilanthirayan
TamilNet, Sunday, 10 May 2009, 15:38 GMT

Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) Military Spokesman Irasiah Punitharooban alias Ilanthirayan (Marshall) sustained heavy injuries in the latest artillery barrage by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in the early hours of Sunday and succumbed to his injuries Sunday noon, sources close to LTTE in Vanni told TamilNet.

abc said...

I agree with Veeran. Tamilnet acted recklessly by revealing the Ilanthiraiyan's state. When you do not publicize the the deaths of Theepan,Amithap, and Durka, what's the need for Ilanthiraiyan? Since GoSL counterclaims that LTTE is the one responsible for carnage in the Safe Zone, Tamilnet may have tempted to reveal Ilanthiraiyan's saga to show the world that, in fact, SLA is the culprit of this carnage- see our Marshall also severely wounded.

Anyways, regardless of the LTTE ranks, we should respect all the "maveerars" equally.

I do not know much about the issue, I am a mere graphic designer--- but would like to share my opinion on the photograph of the NGO worker. I think the picture was definitely photoshopped. If you observe it closely, the lighting on the face of the worker definitely suggests that he is indoors. This is not to say that it is impossible for an aid worker to have chicken on the beach, but the fact that the governement is resorting to phony photos is quite a thing! Let me specify here, again, that I am pretty ignorant of the conflict issue and do not have a stand. But that one photograph stood out like a sore thumb to me.
