UN deplores civilian bloodbath in Sri Lanka; 3,200 civilians reported killed in single day

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — The United Nations called the killing of hundreds of ethnic Tamil civilians in a weekend artillery attack in northern Sri Lanka a "bloodbath" amid reports Monday that the war zone was heavily shelled for a second straight night.

The initial artillery attack — which lasted from Saturday evening into Sunday morning — killed at least 378 civilians and wounded more than a thousand more, according to a health official inside rebel-controlled territory.

A rebel-linked Web site blamed the attack on the government, while the military accused the beleaguered Tamil Tigers of briefly shelling their own territory to gain international sympathy and force a cease-fire.

About 6 p.m. Sunday, a new round of shelling pounded the area, according to a government health official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

The TamilNet Web site said many more civilians were killed in the second attack and that the death toll from the two days of violence was likely in the thousands.

Reports of the fighting are difficult to verify because the government bars journalists and aid workers from the war zone, but the U.N. confirmed a heavy toll from the first attack over the weekend.

That attack marked the bloodiest assault on ethnic Tamil civilians since the civil war flared again more than three years ago. Health officials said a hospital in the war zone was overwhelmed by casualties, and the death toll was expected to sharply rise.

"The U.N. has consistently warned against the bloodbath scenario as we've watched the steady increase in civilian deaths over the last few months," U.N. spokesman Gordon Weiss said Monday. "The large-scale killing of civilians over the weekend, including the deaths of more than 100 children, shows that that bloodbath has become a reality."

U.N. figures compiled last month showed that nearly 6,500 civilians had been killed in three months of fighting this year as the government drove the rebels out of their strongholds in the north and vowed to end the war.

About 50,000 civilians are crowded into the 2.4 mile- (4 kilometer) long strip of coast along with the separatists, who have been fighting for 25 years for a homeland for minority Tamils.

The government has brushed off international calls for a humanitarian truce, saying any pause in the fighting would give the rebels time to regroup.

The initial attack began Saturday evening soon after a Red Cross ship that had been evacuating wounded civilians left the war zone, health officials said.

Artillery pounded the area throughout the night, forcing thousands to huddle in makeshift bunkers, said Dr. V. Shanmugarajah, a health official in the region.

Hours after the attack, the dead and wounded continued to pour into the hospital, he said. As of Sunday afternoon, the bodies of 378 civilians had been brought in and were being buried by volunteers, but the death toll was likely far higher since many families buried their dead where they fell, he said.

TamilNet said rescue workers had counted 1,200 civilians killed in the attack. The Web site initially reported that the rebels' military spokesman, Rasiah Ilanthirayan, was among the dead, but later said only that he was seriously wounded.

Bodies were laid out in rows on the mud outside the hospital, some of their faces covered with mats and sheets, according to photos from the area. One small boy was stripped to the waist, his head covered in a bloody bandage and his mouth agape.

The hospital was struggling to cope with the 1,122 wounded civilians amid a shortage of physicians, nurses and aides made treatment difficult, Shanmugarajah said.

"We are doing the first aid and some surgeries as quickly as we can. We are doing what is possible. The situation is overwhelming; nothing is within our control," he said.

More than half the hospital staff did not turn up for work because their homes were attacked and many of the wounded went untreated for more than 24 hours, said the other health official, who declined to be named.

Suresh Premachandran, an ethnic Tamil lawmaker, said the assault was the deadliest attack on civilians since the 1983 anti-Tamil riots that killed as many as 2,000 people and helped trigger the civil war.

"In the name of eliminating terrorism, the Sri Lankan government massacres its own citizens. It is absolutely unacceptable," he said, calling for the international community to intervene.

TamilNet also blamed the attack on the Sri Lankan forces, which rights groups have accused of bombing and shelling the war zone despite its pledge to stop using heavy weapons.

The Sri Lankan military denied firing the artillery and said they witnessed the rebels firing mortar shells from one corner of the coastal strip into another section heavily populated with civilians for one hour Sunday morning.

"I think the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) is now trying to use these people as their last weapon to show the world that the army is firing indiscriminately and stop this offensive," military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara said.

Human rights groups have accused the rebels of holding the civilians as human shields and shooting some who tried to flee.

Human Rights Watch on Saturday accused the military of repeatedly shelling and bombing hospitals in the war zone.

Seven lessons on how to fight the globalized Tiger

by Dayan Jayatilleka

These closing climactic weeks of the conventional war have been accompanied by tremendous external pressure on the Sri Lankan state. This has its upside because it illuminates. It reveals to us the world as it is and how it might be. It tells us who our friends are. It tells us also who our enemy’s friends are. It educates us as to what we must and must not do, including in the coming weeks and days.

Here is the rude reality. There is a three pronged campaign to save the Tiger. One is mounted from within the overseas Tamil community, the dominant pro-Tiger/pro-Tamil Eelam stream having developed into a global movement. The second prong is the West, with some functioning as the spear-point of that prong, while others are less committed. Some Western quarters are clearly protectors and potential patrons of the Tigers and the Tamil Eelam cause. The third prong is located in neighboring Tamil Nadu, with some parties now committing themselves to the cause of Tamil Eelam in Sri Lanka.

Luckily, this external pressure comes at a time when it cannot really affect our conduct on the ground; cannot deflect our military action. Such is the resolve of public opinion, the national leadership and the armed forces. 2009 is not 1987. For the moment we can absorb this pressure while spotting and noting where it comes from and extrapolating future trend lines from these pressures and agitations.

What is the first and most basic lesson that the mounting wave of external pressure should teach us? It is this: we are seeing a number of sources, Western and sub-regional, which would easily afford patronage and succor to the surviving LTTE and the Tamil separatist project. Furthermore it cannot be ruled out that the anti-Sri Lanka /pro-Tamil Eelam elements in Tamil Nadu would have a stronger position in a ruling coalition in Delhi by early June. Therefore, it is imperative that we act decisively within the narrowing window of opportunity open to us, to eliminate the LTTE as a military force, destroying its leadership and hard core cadres who have been trapped in the Zone, after which we must wheel around and hunt down the residual terrorists who may have escaped into the jungles.

It is precisely because we are relatively weak and our enemy is relatively strong externally, while they are relatively weak and we are relatively strong domestically, that we must maximize that advantage. If we eliminate the LTTE as an army on Sri Lankan soil, we can minimize the effects upon us, of present and future patronage being offered by offshore sources. If on the other hand, we allow the Tigers to survive and escape, they will quickly regroup and be redeployed, with all the external spaces that they have access to. In short the Tigers must cease to function within Sri Lanka , and to cease to function they must cease to exist. The Tiger is a globalized creature but its head is still on Sri Lankan soil. That head must be cut off, now.

Thus the mounting external pressures on Sri Lanka must not only NOT lead to an easing of the final military campaign, but must result in its exact opposite, the determination to inflict the most complete and decisive defeat and destruction possible on the Tigers, while taking maximum precautions to safeguard the civilians.

The second lesson is that the Tamil Eelam movement is more globalized than ever; the struggle between Sri Lanka and the Tamil separatist project will continue in the global arena, on an international scale, and that the country’s future in the next stage will be greatly influenced if not decisively determined in the international theatre. This includes the preservation of the military gains on the ground.

The third lesson is that there must be a shift of national emphasis and priority, to the international front. Just as the country and state matured to the point where it shifted to the correct policy stance on the war, overhauled its military machine and placed the right personnel in the right places, the same or a similar task will have to be undertaken in the domain of Sri Lanka ’s external relations.

The fourth lesson is that we must clearly identify and build up our “natural” international defense lines. These are the Non Aligned Movement and the countries of the global South. Within and outside the developing world, Sri Lanka’s most reliable strategic friendships will have to be with those, mainly but not only Eurasian, who place high value on strong states, state sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, and within this group of states, those which have no significant Tamil populations. The ties with such states must be upgraded and solidified into a structure or system. We should for example, apply for observer status with the Shanghai Organization for Security Cooperation, a structure which includes Russia and China , and focuses on counter-terrorism.

The fifth lesson is no one, even among our friends, will countenance either an insensitive or slow alleviation of the problems of IDPs and related humanitarian questions or an absence of an immediately postwar political solution based on autonomy and equality, for the Tamil people. (We have until a new administration is sworn in, in New Delhi , to get our act together on both issues, simultaneously not sequentially).

The sixth lesson is that the Sri Lankan state has to catch up, get with the new calendar and new times, and learn to speak a new language. “Bush-speak” had no acceptance outside the USA even during his administration and now it is rejected within the USA itself and has no resonance anywhere in the world. Sri Lanka ’s dominant discourse has to change or it will lose the global struggle by simple default. Macho nationalism, religious majoritarianism, unilateralism and “anything goes in the struggle against terrorism” are out; the attempt to combine ethics and power, (“ethical realism”) is in.

The seventh lesson is that if we are to compete with and beat the globalized Tamil secessionist project with its western patrons -- better exemplified by MIA making TIME’s 100, rather than by Velupillai Prabhakaran the least articulate and most corpulent guerrilla leader in the world -- we have to rebuild our soft power and smart power, just as we did our hard power. This requires that we undergo a collective transformation, amounting to a revolution, in education, culture and mentality. If anyone wants to understand shifts in US policy towards Sri Lanka , they must factor in the 80-100 young US educated Tamils working on Capitol Hill as aides, researchers and staffers of Congressmen and Senators, and then contrast that with the output of our educational system as we have debased it.

It is not that Sri Lanka had no MIAs. We had better MIAs than MIA, way before MIA. Remember Yolande Bawan at the Newport jazz festival? Right now we’ve got DeLon who I think has a far better singing voice than MIA, but who is backing him in the USA to make a breakthrough?

When a collective mentality looks to the past rather than the future, it has lost the capacity to envision and produce future excellence or achievement. As Dr Martin Luther King said in 1967, minting a phrase picked up and popularized by Barack Obama, “we are now faced with the fact, my friends, that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now”.

Liberal Democrat Malcolm Bruce MP for Gordon and Liberal Democrat Chairman of the Commons International Affairs Select CommitteeMalcolm Bruce MP for Gordon and Liberal Democrat Chairman of the Commons International Affairs Select CommitteeChairman of the Commons International Affairs Select Committee and MP for Gordon, Malcolm Bruce accused Tamil Tigers as terrorists and said "unless you end terrorism you can’t actually build the united Sri Lanka". He made this eye opening statement on BBC Radio-4 interview after coming back to UK from a two day visit in Sri Lanka.

At the invitation of Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapaksa, a cross-party group of UK parliamentarians visited Sri Lanka for 'an independent fact finding mission' on 4th and 5th of May. It was focused on the ongoing humanitarian crisis largely exaggerated by pro- Tamil Tiger propaganda network, few British politicians and some NGOs and INGOs.

The group was headed by the special envoy of the British Prime Minister, Des Browne, Labour MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun. The delegation included John Bercow (Conservative MP for Buckingham); Malcolm Bruce (Liberal Democrat MP for Gordon); Eddie McGrady (Social Democratic and Labour Party MP for South Down) and Mohammad Sarwar (Labour MP for Glasgow Central).

British delegation held meetings with politicians, civil society figures and personally visited IDP camps in the North of Sri Lanka. In a different statement MP Macolm Bruce said "Horror stories in Britain about conditions in Sri Lanka camps housing hundreds of thousands of Tamil refugees are wrong. There may be shortages, but refugees I spoke to were happy to have escaped the fighting in the North".

He highly appreciated the way Sri Lankan government handle the situation with fewer resources and further said “They have done an extremely good job. Although it has to be said they are trying extremely hard, which quite impressive what they are doing”.
The full interview of the BBC Radio-4 as follows.
BBC Radio 4: A Group of MPs just returns from fact finding mission to Sri Lanka. We are joining one of them, Malcolm Bruce, the Liberal Democrat Chairs of International Affairs Select Committee. Good morning!

Malcolm Bruce, MP: Good morning!

BBC: What did you find?

Malcolm Bruce, MP: Well, we had the opportunity to visit camps in the North where people have recently managed to find shelter having escaped from the conflict zone. I think the Sri Lankan authorities are under extremely pressure 135,000 people escaped from the area held by the terrorists and of cause they have to provide camps for very short notice. In that sense they have done an extremely good job. They are under intense pressure..., and our concern was that they were not allowing international agencies and UN in fast enough to support the Government what they are doing and to meet the needs of the people both in terms of food, shelter and the water and sanitation. Although it has to be said they are trying extremely hard, which quite impressive what they are doing.

BBC: But there still lots of people caught in the fighting. Aren’t they?

Malcolm Bruce, MP: Well, there are unknown number of people figure between ten and hundred thousand (10,000 - 100,000) trapped inside the conflict zone and of course there is a concern if the Government were to finish off the terrorists and they would have to same time finishing off their own civilians. I think at the moment it appears there is an attempt to try and find a solution that will end the war without causing great colossal damage to local civilians. We did find quiet lot of people we spoke to, freely told us that they were unable to leave the conflict zone before they were given the assistance by the Sri Lankan Army because there were threatened with shooting by their own side. Many of them were with children not repaired to take that risk.

BBC: It actually you can say you think that there is a search on some kind of resolution which would avoid further difficulties for the civilians caught in the conflict zone because until now the Sri Lankan seems pretty determined to finish off the job they begun in military terms.

Malcolm Bruce, MP: You can’t really blame them. I mean the country….(interruption……)

BBC: I wasn’t. I asked a usual question. I just want to raise what you say

Malcolm Bruce, MP: I think the point is obviously it is determination trying to end the 30 years of conflict into deal with terrorists for ever. But I think partly because of the pressure from international community and also recognition these are Sri Lankan citizens, they want to find a way of doing it, does not kill more and indeed many have already died. And in that cause huge frustration for the military because they want to take out the terrorists but they can’t do it without these hostages getting in between. At the moment it is a deadlock.

BBC: You are just using the word, terrorists. It is a very loaded one. We are talking about the Tamil Tiger rebels here, Aren’t you?

Malcolm Bruce, MP: Well, I have to say these Tamil Tigers have assassinated many many Tamils including in and out of governments and the opposition parties and we had very credible evidence many of the people we met in camps to say they were threatened and shot at by their own side and told them if they try to leave the conflict zone their lives be at risk and in those circumstances, I think there is a clear indication that this is a divided community and the unless you end terrorism you can’t actually build the united Sri Lanka.

Not even deaths of Theepan, Durga, Gadaffi, Pallavan who were senior leaders were admitted and published by Tamilnet. What is the logic in admitting his injury when they haven't admitted any other death or casualty to LTTErs.

Doctor says up to 1,000 dead in Sri Lanka shelling
AP

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka – Two days of shelling across Sri Lanka's northern war zone killed at least 430 ethnic Tamil civilians _ and likely as many as 1,000 _ a government doctor in the area said Monday. The United Nations branded the attacks a "bloodbath."

With the civilian death toll skyrocketing in the civil war, a coalition of international human rights groups called for the U.N. Security Council to urgently hold talks on the conflict.

A rebel-linked Web site blamed the attacks on the government, while the military accused the beleaguered Tamil Tigers of shelling their own territory to gain international sympathy and force a cease-fire.

The first barrage struck the tiny sliver of northeast coast still held by the rebels Saturday evening and lasted through the night, health officials said.

About 6 p.m. Sunday, a new round of shelling _ less intense than the first _ pounded a newly demarcated "safe zone" where the government had urged civilians to gather, according to Dr. V. Shanmugarajah, who works at a makeshift hospital in the war zone.

A total of 393 people were either brought to the hospital for burial or died at the facility Sunday, while another 37 bodies were brought in Monday morning, he said. More than 1,300 wounded civilians came to the hospital as well, he said.

However, the death toll was likely far higher, he said. Many of the dead were buried in the bunkers where they had taken refuge and then were killed, and many of the wounded never made it to the hospital for treatment, he said.

"There were many who died without medical attention," Shanmugarajah said. "Seeing the number of wounded and from what the people tell me, I estimate the death toll to be around 1,000."

Amid Death in Sri Lanka, UN Wedding in New York, Ban's Visit Delay Questioned

The Korea Herald also quoted the anonymous aide that Mr. Ban “could also have been burdened by a frequent mentioning of him as one of South Korea's next presidential candidates." A Security Council diplomat, speaking Monday morning as the UN confirmed at least 400 civilians killed over the weekend including over 100 children, told Inner City Press that perhaps it would be good for the UN for Ban to move on.

When Inner City Press pointed out that weddings like this are planned months in advance and are hard to reschedule, the diplomat countered that Ban never should have claimed he would go if it would save a life.

UN's Ban beams in Malta earlier this year, Sri Lanka bloodbath not shown

“Had he gone this weekend, the government wouldn't have bombed so freely,” the diplomat said, going on to wonder aloud if the Sri Lankan government may have known of the Bans quiet wedding plans.

99 percent Norway Tamils aspire for Tamil Eelam
[TamilNet, Monday, 11 May 2009, 10:51 GMT]
In a secret ballot of universal suffrage, conducted by a Norwegian media simultaneously in 14 centres in the length and breath of the country among Eezham Tamils, 98.95 percent of the voters said that they aspire for the formation of an independent and sovereign Tamil Eelam in the North and East of the island of Sri Lanka. The voter turn out was a high 89.8 percent in the capital city of Oslo and an average 80 percent for the country, Utrop biweekly that conducted the ballot said. The ballot gains significance not only in democratically and concretely revealing what the Tamils want, but also in telling that the so-called Oslo Declaration that speaks about internal self-determination is not up to their expectations, Tamil circles said. A couple of days before the ballot, Norwegian Minister Erik Solheim advocated a federal solution to the crisis.

In France, the results were similar.Hope that this will happen soon in other countries to give strength to Amma JJ in TN :-)

The voter turn out was a high 89.8 percent in the capital city of Oslo and an average 80 percent for the country, Utrop biweekly that conducted the ballot said.

Latest update from inner city press. Am I reading it wrong here or does this 12:03 update says only the other 3 (France, Briton and US) permanent members attend the meeting today? The last time when these 3 came together it was banging on Serbia over Kosovo. We need to watch carefully what the UN and the 3 permanent members do in the next few days. Singala MFs should be slowed down until May 16th.

=================
Update of 12:03 p.m. -- a staffer of a Permanent Five member said the Sri Lanka meeting will not be in the basement -- "there was no room" -- but rather in a conference room upstairs. Apparently, the Press will not be able to stake the meeting out. NGOs, OCHA, but neither Russia nor China, says the staffer...

Update of 12:07 p.m. -- Miliband and entourage charge into an elevator and head upstairs. The Sri Lanka meeting was supposed to start at noon. Where is Kouchner? Who will attend for the U.S.? Will Ban Ki-moon attend? It's said that Kouchner's and Miliband's stakeout will be sometime after 1.

MR & GR had made a terrible mistake by killing thousands of civilian. The SL government wanted to overrun NFZ before the Tamil Nadu election. The SL knows that sonia's Indian government is going to be kicked out.

The IC has been pushing hard for ceasefire and SL doesn't want to listen ( it can’t , lost so many poor sinhala soldiers) , it is matter of time before UN invokes the R2P.

Bhairav, The only reason the singlecells can came this far is the full and unconditional support from Sonia government. I read an article in a tamil newsspaper once and the information it conveyed to me stuck with me for couple of years now. It said "Path to tamil eelam starts from Chennai". How so true in today's situation. If only KK was so strong in protecting the eelam tamils, we won't be going thro' this horrible phase.

How do you overcome a country like India? 1. go with a country that opposes it to create a counter balance 2. Work with them and try to convince it 3. Hope to get a neutral party which is not overly opposed to eelam tamils. At this moment #1 and #2 is not possible and everyone is hoping for #3. #1 is definitely no go since it will not go well with Indian tamils. The situation is too complicated to have a black and white solution for this stand off between India and Eelam tamils.

SL government always seems to claim that it is democratically elected government. A democratically elected government needs act democratically, not terrorize it's own population.

The present SL government treats TAMILS as no-srilankan. Every vilation by SL shows that the Eelam Tamils can’t co-exists with the racist Sinhala. The IC needs to come up with a time line to separate Eelam from SL.

Current Indian government is a road block for any IC/UN intervention. The US had discussion with S.Menon regarding the SL matter. I bet Menon would have mentioned that LTTE finished and need couple of days to clear up remaining LTTE, The SL has a solution to solve ethnic problem and US must have listens to it.

No one would have expected (Specially the SL ) the LTTE hold the NO-FIRE-ZONE for this long. Now the Indian election is coming to an end, I believe the IC has golden opportunity act.

Modi raises Tamil issue to lure AIADMK
11 May 2009, 0604 hrs IST, ET Bureau

NEW DELHI: Having succeeded in winning TRS over, BJP on Sunday intensified its efforts to lure AIADMK, which too is presently part of the third
front, into the NDA fold by lashing out at the Manmohan Singh government for its alleged indifference to the plight of the Sri Lankan Tamils.

It was Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi who took it upon himself to send a clear message to AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa and her alliance partners, with the exception of the Left parties, that BJP was concerned over the manner in which the prime minister Manmohan Singh was ‘cold-shouldering the Sri Lankan Tamils by refusing to take up their case with Colombo’.

Addressing the NDA rally held in Ludhiana on Sunday, Mr Modi also took a dig at Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi, who’s Ms Jayalalithaa’s arch-rival in state politics, for enacting the “shortest-ever fast-unto-death, which began after breakfast and ended before lunch.”

In the assessment of the BJP leadership, the AIADMK-led alliance had a clear edge over the rival DMK-Congress combine. The former Tamil Nadu chief minister had not only forged a formidable rainbow coalition comprising PMK, MDMK and the Left parties, besides the AIADMK, but was cleverly using the cause of the Sri Lankan Tamils to her advantage. The AIADMK-led alliance, in their estimates, was likely to win a large chunk of the 39 Lok Sabha seats in Tamil Nadu.

The Gujarat chief minister, who shares a very good rapport with Ms Jayalalithaa, brought the prime minister in his firing-line, criticising him for commiserating with the Italian middleman Quattrocchi, but remaining unmoved by the reports of Sri Lankan high-handedness against the Tamil civilians. “I want to ask the prime minister that why in the midst of elections, he was worried about Quattrocchi being harassed and cleared his file, but has opted to remain silent when lakhs of our Tamil brothers are going through tough time in Sri Lanka,” he said.

“External affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee was sent to Sri Lanka, but he spent just four hours there and came back without any concrete results. I want to ask the prime minister why you are silent when lakhs of Tamils are passing through a harrowing time?” Mr Modi sought to know.

The Gujarat chief minister also poked fun at Mr Karunanidhi, pointing that he had not seen a leader who went on am indefinite fast, “but started it after breakfast in the morning and ended it even before lunch time.” He tore into Congress, and its general secretary Rahul Gandhi, for ‘procrastinating on the decision to execute’ Afzal Guru, who has been convicted by the Supreme Court for masterminding the attack on Parliament.

“The Congress-led UPA is indulging in votebank politics and hanging Guru does not suit its interests,” Modi said, a day after Mr Gandhi defended his party saying Afzal will be hanged when his turn comes. “Out of 29 persons who are on death row, cases of 26 have been processed and only three cases, including that of Afzal Guru, are pending,” Mr Modi told the crowd at Ludhiana.

58 Division troops now operating South of Rektavaikkal have advanced further 800m and positioned at the outskirts of the newly declared 2km long civilian safety zone while destroying several LTTE gun installations today (May 11).

11SLLI, 9GW and 10GR infantrymen have forced into several LTTE strong positions overwhelming terrorists and seizing a cache of weaponry, heavy earth moving vehicles and explosive devices.

Meanwhile, 9VIR troops have captured an LTTE bunker positioned constructed with cement, which was said used as a command post cum artillery position to mount attacks at the advancing security forces. According to ground troops, terrorists have trapped the area with improvised explosive devices including phosphorous bombs and have also used USAID donated vegetable oil cans as improvised barrel bombs.

Also, 6GW infantrymen consolidating defences have uncovered an armour plated long vehicle used by LTTE to escort its high profile cadres, military sources said. Earlier, on Sunday (10) 6GW troops broke through a well fortified LTTE defence line at Irattavaikkal and seized a bulldozer which was used to construct an LTTE earth bund. Terrorists have put on stiff resistance before fleeing in total disarray, security sources said. The LTTE built earth bund at Irattavaikkal could be seen miles away the sources further said.

According to military, terrorists have concentrated activities in vicinity of the pirated Jordanian cargo vessel 'MV Farah -III', which is also used as a sea tiger launching pad to attack fleeing hostages from LTTE tyranny.

Indian election: Tamil leader calls for invasion of Sri Lanka
The leader of one of India's largest Tamil parties, Jayalalithaa, has called for Indian troops to invade Sri Lanka to stop the "atrocities" on the island and help create a Tamil state.

By Dean Nelson in Madras
Last Updated: 11:43PM BST 11 May 2009

Former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu state Jayaram Jayalalithaa
The former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, who is expected to win the state in the final stage of India's election campaign on Wednesday, told a mass rally: "Just as Indira Gandhi created Bangladesh, we will create a separate Eelam [state]."

Her comments in Madras, also known as Chennai, have caused alarm in India because she and her All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam party are regarded as almost certain to be a part of the next coalition government.

She is expected to sweep the state, with an alliance of more than 30 seats which will make her block of MPs crucial to the hopes of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the rival Congress Party in their bid to lead the next government.

The plight of civilians trapped between the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and advancing Sri Lankan troops has been a key issue in Tamil Nadu, where 60 million ethnic Tamils share the anger of their Sri Lankan Tamil "brethren". New Delhi has been so concerned about the domestic impact of the Sri Lankan crisis that it dispatched its national security adviser and foreign secretary to persuade the Sri Lankan government to promise an end to shelling in the civilian "no-fire zone".

But anger has risen among Indian Tamils as new reports of fresh shelling and aerial attacks have emerged from Sri Lanka.

At a rally attended by an estimated 30,000 supporters, Jayalalithaa promised she would not compromise on the issue and would demand a Tamil state on the island as a price of her support for any new Indian government.

She had earlier promised to back a separate state in Sri Lanka if Colombo refused to concede to a devolved Tamil entity within a federal state, but her stance hardened following discussions with the Hindu guru Ravi Shankar, who is a Tamil.

Surrounded by armed guards, and with her local candidate standing silently with his hands pressed together in supplication, Jayalalithaa appeared to threaten the prime minister, Manmohan Singh, with punishment for allegedly supplying arms to Colombo, a charge the government has denied.

"Every day atrocities are being committed on the Tamils by Sri Lanka. How can Sonia Gandhi [the Congress leader] say everything is okay there? We will punish those who supplied arms to Rajapaksa," she said.

Jayalalithaa is a uniquely Tamil phenomenon in Indian politics. She was a popular film star in the state who joined the All India party, which was then controlled by her former co-star M G Ramachandran. After his death she seized control of the party and has since served two terms as the state's chief minister.

When asked how India might force a determined Sri Lankan government, which believes the annihilation of the Tamil Tigers is imminent, to back down, one of her aides said: "We are big brother and we are militarily strong compared to Sri Lanka. If she comes to power or installs a government, it would be to see that the Sri Lankans are militarily defeated for a separate Tamil state."

Sri Lanka's defence secretary, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, told The Daily Telegraph he believed Jayalalithaa's comments were electioneering and that India would not dare risk another military operation in Sri Lanka.

"We're not worried about the rhetoric because the central government has to think – they know creating instability in Sri Lanka is always detrimental to a stable India," he said.

British MP says LTTE should be defeated for a United SL.

The full interview of the BBC Radio-4 as follows :

BBC Radio 4: A Group of MPs just returns from fact finding mission to Sri Lanka. We are joining one of them, Malcolm Bruce, the Liberal Democrat Chairs of International Affairs Select Committee. Good morning!

Malcolm Bruce, MP: Good morning!

BBC: What did you find?

MP: Well, we had the opportunity to visit camps in the North where people have recently managed to find shelter having escaped from the conflict zone.

Aren't they?

MP: Well, there are unknown number of people figure between ten and hundred thousands (10,000 - 100,000) trapped inside the conflict zone and of course there is a concern if the Government were to finish off the terrorists and they would have to same time finishing off their own civilians.

MP: You can't really blame them. I mean the country....(interruption...)

BBC: I wasn't. I asked a usual question.

I just want to raise what you say

MP: I think the point is obviously it is determination trying to end the 30 years of conflict into deal with terrorists for ever. But I think partly because of the pressure from international community and also recognition these are Sri Lankan citizens, they want to find a way of doing it, does not kill more and indeed many have already died. And in that cause huge frustration for the military because they want to take out the terrorists but they can't do it without these hostages getting in between. At the moment it is a deadlock.

BBC: You are just using the word, terrorists. It is a very loaded one. We are talking about the Tamil Tiger rebels here, Aren't you?

MP: Well, I have to say these Tamil Tigers have assassinated many Tamils including in and out of governments and the opposition parties and we had very credible evidence many of the people we met in camps to say they were threatened and shot at by their own side and told them if they try to leave the conflict zone their lives be at risk and in those circumstances, I think there is a clear indication that this is a divided community and the unless you end terrorism you can't actually build the united Sri Lanka.

Another 1000 civilians break out of captivity
As LTTE mortar fire kills many

Defense sources have reported in that over 1000 civilians broke out of the conflict zone at the Mullaittivu end over 24 hours, ending noon, May 11. The LTTE sentries, initially overwhelmed, recovered and opened fire on the fleeing civilians.

The sentries were then heard on intercepted radio communications calling the LTTE command centre for reinforcements. The LTTE responded with mortar fire which fell within the conflict zone. Around 250 were injured or killed due a combination of fire opened by LTTE sentries and mortar fire. However, more than 750 managed to make it out to safety. At least 250 others escaped through different passages.

The doctors in the conflict zone were heard on intercepted communications saying that they had no facilities to treat the badly wounded numbering about 250.

The incident was widely reported in the international news media quoting a website well known for Tiger disinformation, accusing the government forces of killing civilians. A health official who is reportedly in the Tiger controlled was quoted by the BBC as having said that so far 378 civilian have been killed by shelling from the Sri Lankan army. Sources in Colombo said that the health official is in no position to give an independent account as he is virtually another captive of the Tigers.

Pro-LTTE demonstration endangering children - Toronto
Pro LTTE demonstrators in Toronto, Canada have endangered the lives of children by putting them on the front line of a protest. They have closed down the important Gardiner Expressway in downtown, Toronto.

Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair said that it was an "unlawful" and "dangerous" situation, which mostly brought the danger for themselves, expressing particular concern for small children scattered throughout the crowd.

"It's an extremely dangerous situation to put children on front line of a protest in that way," he said. "There are 2,000 people on that ramp. If something were to happen that they try to get off that ramp very quickly, the likelihood of people being stampeded is quite significant. It's also unsafe up on the Gardiner, the rails are not that high" he added.

The National Post May 11 said, Chief Blair admitted police were caught off guard after demonstrators winding their way from University Avenue to Queen's Park, suddenly stormed up the ramp at Spadina Avenue shortly after 7 p.m., paralyzing traffic and inflicting gridlock on Toronto.

"The protesters must be moved for their own security, as well as for the sake of public order. Notwithstanding the fact they have created a very dangerous situation, we don't want to make it more dangerous by an escalation of force. Efforts to negotiate with the demonstrators were proving futile, calling them "uncooperative" and fractured," he further said.

Chief Blair also said that they have no right to endanger public safety by occupying the Gardiner or other public highways to make demonstrations.

He said police were trying to mobilize sufficient resources for the operation, keeping the day shift on duty, prolonging the afternoon shift, calling in the night shift and contacting neighbouring forces, including York, Peel and the Ontario Provincial Police.

Efforts to negotiate with the demonstrators were proving futile, Chief Blair added, calling them "uncooperative" and fractured.

He could not promise the highway would be open again for morning rush hour.

The SL government had only one plan , that is to militarily defeat the LTTE before Indian election. It failed miserably and now they don't have any other plan. The SL soldiers and racist sinhala are brainwashed to believe that:
1. LTTE will be whipped out before the US election.
2. LTTE is wiped out by Sinhala New year.
3. LTTE is gone to dust before the SL independents day.
4. LTTE is gone before the Indian election.

Now The SL is trying to finish the LTTE before Tamil Nadu election. The SL failed miserably. The MR&GR&SF killed so many poor sinhala soldiers for no-reason. The end of the day the Tamils will get what they have been fighting for the past 30 years.

It described the situation in northern Sri Lanka, where civilians are trapped inside a government-designated "safe area", as a "bloodbath".

Doctor says Sri Lanka civilian toll may be much worse
Associated Press 9:38 PM PDT, May 11, 2009

Colombo, Sri Lanka -- Volunteers dug mass graves Monday in the marshes of Sri Lanka's northern war zone as they buried hundreds of civilians killed in artillery attacks that the United Nations characterized as a "blood bath."

A doctor in the war zone said as many as 1,000 civilians may have been killed in two days of shelling that marked some of the worst violence since the civil war flared again more than three years ago on this Indian Ocean island.

With the civilian death toll skyrocketing, the Tamil Tiger rebels and a coalition of human rights groups separately called for the U.N. Security Council to urgently hold talks on the conflict.

Editor: "Badrinath" said...

All these calls for a "temporary" cease fire are pointless. What does it mean when they say "temporary" ceasefire? It means they want to extract the civilians from the no fire zone and put them into prisons, and then re commence the attack on the LTTE.

What is needed in Sri Lanka is a permanent ceasefire, and then a political settlement granting Tamils self rule.

CHENNAI, India, May 12 (Reuters) - In a key southern state just a few miles from war-torn Sri Lanka, a coalition led by India's ruling party may lose vital seats it needs to forge a winning alliance after the mammoth general election.

A Congress party-led front swept prosperous Tamil Nadu in a whitewash in 2004, earning a large seat windfall seen as crucial to the party's surprise victory at national level.

The state goes to the vote on Wednesday in the last stage of a month-long, staggered election. National results will be released on Saturday.

But this time Congress has lost allies in the state -- two local parties and its former communist partners walked out -- and faces the resurgence of a party that once ruled Tamil Nadu and could become a powerbroker after the April-May polls.

Boasting 39 out of India's 543 parliamentary seats, Tamil Nadu is one of the biggest prizes in a national battle between Congress and the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.

Both national parties rely on regional groups to win power, and Congress will probably need its main ally in Tamil Nadu, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), to help it gain a parliamentary majority. [ID:nDEL414063]

But a slew of grievances, including power cuts and high prices, may eat into the DMK, one of several signs across India that Congress's coalition allies may be struggling under the weight of economic problems. "Congress is worried about Tamil Nadu because they know the DMK front has become weak," Cho S. Ramaswamy, a political commentator, said in the capital Chennai.

Snapping at Congress' heels is the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), led by a former film star, which once ruled the state but won no seats in parliament five years ago.

A funny thing happened with the CNN poll. Bandas, as expected, went crazy over it. Under some Sinhala aliases, I also encouraged them at DW and elsewhere.

Net result is that CNN has had to close the comments section.

Clearly, now, CNN knows that the story has enough audience around the world for them to cover the issue on more programs.

CNN's line before then was that the Tamil issue does not have enough audience to make commercial sense.

A note of thanks to the Bandas who even used proxies to flood the CNN poll.

Ground situation is coming to a close. We are, obviously, within the final days now. Shall hope for a good result in TN tomorrow. Count down to the "rivers of blood" has, apparently, started (note to self: no rivers in the north).

For those thinking about attending protests, do so as soon as you can. Not many days left for the "victimised" pleadings for international community to impose "ceasefire" or "sanctions". As our forefathers realised in the '50s and '60s, verse yourself in the merits of "peaceful" protests and pleadings with the moral authoraities.

Bhairav, we could have had more than 90% but CNN would have then known it was because of a chain mail done by Tamils.

They wanted 'wide-ranging' interest for commercial justification.

Given the situation, any news coverage is good for us. CNN can now be added to BBC and Channel 4 in giving bandas a headache by asking for access.

Once again, bandas proved themselves: poor fools are too 'patriotic' to think.

Leaders and sensitive families have moved out of the zone, primarily to ensure that the SLA does not use them as an excuse to kill more civilians.

Small teams of Tigers remaining around the vicinity. The are doing their best to delay the SLA.

Someone, whoever, has to take responsibility for the people. Otherwise, SLA will have a freehand to kill as many as it wants.

The trouble with LTTE persisting is that the SLA is intent on shelling (and air raiding) non-stop, killing 1000s of people, as it has done for past few days.

South of no fire zone could have been defended with a hand full of men. The water is vast and the bridge can't be used, as snipers and booby traps would make it unusable. The fact that 59th advanced indicates the LTTE left the area.
