Over 30,000 Tamil civilians massacred by Sri Lanka army

Thousands of shallow graves are visible from the air.

By Catherine Philp in Colombo

More than 20,000 Tamil civilians were killed in the final throes of the Sri Lankan civil war, most as a result of government shelling, an investigation by The Times has revealed.

The number of casualties is three times the official figure.

The Sri Lankan authorities have insisted that their forces stopped using heavy weapons on April 27 and observed the no-fire zone where 100,000 Tamil men, women and children were sheltering. They have blamed all civilian casualties on Tamil Tiger rebels concealed among the civilians.

Aerial photographs, official documents, witness accounts and expert testimony tell a different story. With the world’s media and aid organisations kept well away from the fighting, the army launched a fierce barrage that began at the end of April and lasted about three weeks. The offensive ended Sri Lanka’s 26-year civil war with the Tamil Tigers, but innocent civilians paid the price.

Confidential United Nations documents acquired by The Times record nearly 7,000 civilian deaths in the no-fire zone up to the end of April. UN sources said that the toll then surged, with an average of 1,000 civilians killed each day until May 19, the day after Velupillai Prabhakaran, the leader of the Tamil Tigers, was killed. That figure concurs with the estimate made to The Times by Father Amalraj, a Roman Catholic priest who fled the no-fire zone on May 16 and is now interned with 200,000 other survivors in Manik Farm refugee camp. It would take the final toll above 20,000. “Higher,” a UN source told The Times. “Keep going.”

Some of the victims can be seen in the photograph above, which shows the destruction of the flimsy refugee camp. In the bottom right-hand corner, sand mounds show makeshift burial grounds. Other pictures show a more orderly military cemetery, believed to be for hundreds of rebel fighters. One photograph shows rebel gun emplacements next to the refugee camp.

Independent defence experts who analysed dozens of aerial photographs taken by The Times said that the arrangement of the army and rebel firing positions and the narrowness of the no-fire zone made it unlikely that Tiger mortar fire or artillery caused a significant number of deaths. “It looks more likely that the firing position has been located by the Sri Lankan Army and it has then been targeted with air-burst and ground-impact mortars,” said Charles Heyman, editor of the magazine Armed Forces of the UK.

On Wednesday, Sri Lanka was cleared of any wrongdoing by the UN Human Rights Council after winning the backing of countries including China, Egypt, India and Cuba.

A spokesman for the Sri Lankan High Commission in London said: “We reject all these allegations. Civilians have not been killed by government shelling at all. If civilians have been killed, then that is because of the actions of the LTTE [rebels] who were shooting and killing people when they tried to escape.”

Bhairav,

"With three of my distant relatives in the same family who were killed in the war-zone on May 15th, one more of the same family also passed few days back in hospital. It tells what these people went through in the final days in war zone."

I am very sorry that the LTTE had brutalized your family. We should all be happy now that the LTTE is gone and cannot murder your other family members.

Another sellout tells us about what to do with our lives.

Re : I deeply feel that together, we can build the burnt bridges and pave a path to peace, happiness, equality and prosperity for us and for the future generations to come.

Sure we can build bridges after 30,000 of our innocent kids and women are massacred mercilessly by these animals. The so called moda Sinhala barbarians used Pakistani pilots on more than 200 sorties on their bombing campaign against innocent Tamils in the war zone while Indians did everything to save SLA from collapsing.

Every Tamil deep down their heart will feel certain hatred against these Sinhalese, one day it will explode like a volcano. I would like to see thee Tamils get their justice in my life span.

Tamil EELAM is the only solution go forward.

I don't think you hate Sinhalese, Bhairav. You like me, right? I am your Sinhala aNNA. :-)

"Whether the need for another armed struggle, more effective than ever, is going to be imposed upon the Tamils or not, lies very much on the responses of the International Community to the precarious situation created by it."

I can imagine Puthumatalan Pete getting a hard-on reading this...

A senior journalist and media rights activist was abducted and assaulted in Sri Lankan capital Colombo on Tuesday, in another attack on media workers in the country, police said. Journalist Poddalay Jayantha who is also the secretary of the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association (SLWJA), the biggest media rights groups in the country, was abducted by unidentified men in a van and later dumped in the outskirts of the capital. He has been admitted to hospital with injuries to his leg, a spokesman for the hospital said. "I was dragged into the van and beaten up and they cut part of my hair as well," he said.

Mohan what a fool you are, u think that we Tamils lost our family members in this war, do you think we are in mode to accept everything is our own fault ?

We all going see what happens in sri lanka, we see how racist country can ever change to accept Tamils rights.

Mohan might have sinaglese friends already, but i make every effort avoid them.

1st give justice to Tamils.
2nd stop demonizing Tigers they will always be the hero for tamils , same way SLA is to you singalese

then the hands friendship will extend otherwise shitlanka will again fall in to war.

Only a win- win situation can bring peace to your country. Now singalese have won the war so
let the Tamil win their freedom.

["Similarly the best way to learn about Hinduism is from Hindus not Buddhists."]

Spoken by a buddhist who just told all the Hindus they didn't know hinduism properly and that keeping signs at Hindu temples saying that Muruga is a slave of Buddha is the hindu norm throughout the world.

Such insults by sinhalese is why there will never be reconciliation.

In the Tamilnet article, does these paragraphs suggest something?

''The sentiments of the Eezham Tamils also show that Pirapaharan is not a mortal or physical entity, but a symbol for them. The symbol will be there and the 'file' cannot be closed as long as the issues are alive.''

''Whether the need for another armed struggle, more effective than ever, is going to be imposed upon the Tamils or not, lies very much on the responses of the International Community to the precarious situation created by it. ''

NEW DEVELOPMENT IN SRI LANKA

In the aftermath of LTTE military defeat, a new development is said to be taking place at a rapid pace in Tricomalee according to a report in today's Telegraph. Aid workers in Trincomalle have told the correspondent that "ethnic cleansing" at a fast pace is being carried out by the government in key areas of the town. The strategy is to abduct leading citizens in the area, torture and kill them, dump their bodies on the roadside. Twelve such murders have taken place in recent days. The people living in that area are petrified and are selling their houses at knock-down prices and are moving out to the hinterland or some other area they think it is safe for them to stay. The houses are bought mostly by the Sinhalese. Another development is that state unoccupied land is being allocated to government supporters in the South and are given loans to put up houses. New roads and lanes are being constructed by demolishing houses once the owners were told to vacate their houses. Out of fear for their lives, they are moving away to some other place. ( My guess is that though the Tamil media is in the know of these goings-on, they do not publish them for fear of reprisals. ) The Telegraph article suggests that the same strategy may be copied to the northern towns.

The Sinhalese from ancient times considered Sri Lanka as belonging to them and that Tamils were either interlopers or settlers who should enjoy no more rights than mere settlers being allowed on sufferance from the Sinhalese. This attitude of D.S.Senanayake took the form of Gal Oya colonization schemes, disenfranchisement of estate Tamils and encouragement of northern Tamils to set up kadais in the South. Gamini Dissanayake and Lalith Athulathmudali got the armed forces to chase away the residents of Manal Aru and settled Sinhalese in the now " Weli Oya". During the racial riots, Tamils who left areas with irrigable land were seized by Sinhalese. We have a few relatives who possessed irrigable paddy fields in Anuradhapura but are frightened to go there and claim them.

The new strategy is to use the armed forces to give security to new Sinhalese settlements in Tamil areas. So in a few years, there will be no M.Ps to represent the Tamils in the Parliament. So the dictum of Sarath Fonseka that Sri Lanka belongs to the Sinhalese and Tamils should be allowed to stay without calming any rights, is going to come true. During the next three years of Mahinda Rajapakse's presidency and through another likely term, the "ethnic cleansing" project will be achieved fully and successfully. This is the reason, I believe, that he does not want any international organisations to go north.

As said by the former Indian diplomat in an article I sent you earlier, Sinhalese are well versed in international diplomacy so much so they were able muster 18 members in the UN Human Rights Council as against 18 mustered by America and its allies. India, China and Russia walked out of the council meeting when a resolution was defeated for postponement of the meeting. No wonder Mahinda Rajapakse is crowing loudest at the top of his voice and a hero and champion to the Sinhalese !

If we live for another 10 t0 15 years, we will see a new and different Yappanaya in the north. So brush your spoken Sinhala well if you have any idea of going there in a few years time !

Nedumaran (dated June 1st):

In Sri Lanka 13,130 Missing IDPs Reported But Downplayed By UN, Journalist Beaten
[ Inner City Press ][ Jun 02 11:36 GMT ]

With the UN already under fire for withholding and downplaying the number of civilian casualties in Sri Lanka, another ongoing controversy has opened up concerning the number of internally displaced persons detained in the IDP camps in northern Sri Lanka. Between the May 27 and May 30 reports of the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, over 13,000 IDPs simply disappeared from the camps. OCHA's May 30 report states that "276,785 persons crossed to the Government controlled areas from the conflict zone. This represents a decrease of 13,130 IDPs since the last report (Sitrep No.18) on 27 May 2009. The decrease is associated with double counting. Additional verification is required."
