Tamils in concentration camps die of starvation as Sri Lanka leaders live luxuriously

The Sri Lankan government has recently released some old family pictures of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, and claimed they show Prabhakaran living a very luxurious life. I am sure everyone in the world has pictures of themselves celebrating some special occasion. There is nothing wrong with celebrating a special occasion with a feast. Defence.lk is trying to twist the photos to suggest every single day Prabhakaran is living a luxurious life, but the fact that he has refused to be bought out for years proves this is not the case - he is not interested in money or a luxurious lifestyle.

They say Prabhakaran gave special treatment to his own son, but sent other people's sons to fight. But Prabhakaran's son was leading from the front lines last month when he was injured in combat. Prabhakaran is willing to let his son fight and die on the front lines for the cause of the Tamil people.

The Sri Lankan government continuously tries to benefit from contradictory statements. They will simultaneously say Charles Anthony was injured on the front lines, but then they will say he is protected and living a luxurious life in a foreign country. They are unable to make up their mind which story to publicize, so they foolishly publish both versions which are mutually contradictory.

They show a picture taken during peace times of Prabhakaran's son celebrating his birthday. During peace time there was no shortage of food, or difficulties for the people. Do they expect Prabhakran's 6 year old son should be dressed in military dress during peace time on his birthday? Again they show a picture of Prabhakaran's son riding a bicycle during the peace times, claiming it is somehow wrong for a child to ride a bicycle.

They show a picture of an NGO worker eating on the beach during the peace time, and claim there is something wrong with that. Do NGO workers not eat food? Should NGO workers live off of air? Again, this picture was taken during peace time when there was plenty of food for everyone. It was not like it is now in the no fire zone, where the Sri Lankan government denies food to more than 150,000 civilians, while the government leaders enjoy sumptuous meals in Colombo.

There have already been a number of starvation deaths reported inside the government detention camps. While the Sri Lankan government lets imprisoned Tamil civilians die of starvation in their custody, the leaders like Rajapaksa enjoy sumptuous meals in Colombo and on international trips. Take for example the fact that during a short period of less than 2 years (2006 to 2007), Mahinda Rajapaksa spent around 473 million rupees on trips abroad. This same person wants to criticize Prabhakaran for giving a birthday cake to his son in 2002 during peace times.

Let anyone who wants to criticize old family photos first look at the house, car and food that Mahinda Rajapaksa uses today. Maybe Defence.lk can show us photos, side by side, of Prabhakaran's place of residence, fighting with his people in the no fire zone, compared to Mahinda Rajapaksa's luxurious house in Colombo.

btw, what do you really think?

1. Should Prabakaran be tried for war crimes? That is really unfair isn't it?
2. Should he be handed over to India to face trial for killing Rajive? No no way..

Everything done during peace time were good weren't they. Soon there will be peace and foreigners will be able to eat on the beach. Rescued children will be able to celebrate their birthdays not wearing tiger uniform and cyanide capsule. You haven't explained what Swarnam, a senior commander has been ordered to wait on Prabha's family.
If you like to know how to treat civilians, ask your beloved Hillary Clinton. They have just done in Afghanistan. They do it the way all the so called first world countries do it. Sri Lanka is different. At least appreciate it.

Pierre said...

The difference between Prabha's son and children of civilians is that the former doesn't or didn't look like he ever missed a meal while the latter looked like they never had a decent meal. Also CA had the best education money could buy while the ordinary children were not allowed to step into a school. That is what Tamil Eelam is about. VP didn't induct his son to the front line to die for their cause. He didn't expect to be cornered within such a short time. If he expected that he would never have acted so cocky at Mavil Aru. He brought his son straight away as 2nd in command bypassing the senior people. If he foresaw LTTE's fate, CA would have still been in UK or US.

http://enduringamerica.com/2009/05/06/tuesdays-mass-killing-in-afghanistan-us-military-begins-the-lying/

Tuesday’s Mass Killing in Afghanistan: US Military Begins The Lying All day we’ve been following reports of the mass killing in a US airstrike in western Afghanistan. The aerial assault was called in after fighting between Afghan forces, backed by coalition troops, and insurgents. Estimates of the dead have varied from a few dozen to 120 — an accurate count may not be possible because some of the dead have already been buried — but the provincial governor fears about 100 civilians have been killed.
US officials quickly took the official line that any civilian deaths were regrettable but were at the hands of the Taliban. A fine example of that deflection of blame can be heard in the BBC interview of the American ambassador to NATO this morning (about 1:50:00 into the podcast).

Leaving aside the consequence that relatives of dead civilians are just as likely to blame the Americans who killed them as they are the Taliban, what is already disconcerting is the US attempt to cover up the scale of the tragedy. The US military says that it has “preliminarily concluded that about 11 civilians were wounded and that 11 insurgents were killed”.
How do I know that is a blatant lie? Well, because International Committee of the Red Cross officials have seen “dozens of people, including women and children” dead at the scene. The ICRC head of delegation in Kabul confirmed, “Those killed included an Afghan Red Crescent volunteer and 13 members of his family who had been sheltering from fighting in a house that was bombed in an airstrike.”
None of this, of course, is to absolve the insurgents of responsibility, giving the proximity of civilians to the fighting. Still, as Afghan President Karzai is in Washington for talks, this is already a glaring example of how the Obama policy in Afghanistan will be undone not only by US military action, but by the attempts to cover up the consequences of those actions.

VP's photos on DefenceLK made interesting viewing.

I think LankaEnews also had some photos of his kids.

It seems like VP had the simplest wedding of any Tamil.

His kids had lived in children's homes and attended local school. This, despite years of rumours about their education in UK, Ireland and Norway. In 2006, when his daughter was repeating her A-Levels in Killinochchi, an Aussie MP told the parliament there that VP was preparing to fly to Ireland for a lavish 18th birthday party for his daughter in Ireland.

Looks like the family entertained guests with simple meals served on a table covered with plastic sheets.

The houses are simple part concrete huts. Mathy's home on Pungudu is much bigger than any in the photos.

All in all, it shows the humble life the leader led. At most, he probably spared US$100 a month for the up-keep of his family. Where else would you find someone who handles more than US$300 million a year, but only takes US$1, 200 a year for his family?

Peter said...

Now, need we make relative comparisons with the Sinhalese? Chandrika had her children attending the most expensive private schools in the UK, and then read medicine and veterinary science, both five year courses that cost around US$35, 000 per year in tuition fees alone.

Rajapaksa sent his eldest son to City University in London to read law at a cost of US$25, 000 per year. Cost of living in the City could also be around US$10, 000 a year. Let alone his personal body guard's fees. His second son was also sent to the UK, this time legally on navy money.

India tried its level best to bring Prabhakaran around using sama, dhana, beva, dhanda... But they could never succeed.

Money, power, threat nothing could work against him. Even Karuna had grudgingly admitted that Prabnakaran will fight till the end but will never surrender or give up.

Tamils do not require any certificate from srilanka regarding Prabhakaran's integrity.

LTTE's intent has been to hold-out at least minimal territory until the 13th; this they have done, unless remaining area is captured within a week.

Now, the more crucial issue is the outcome of the Indian elections.

Firstly, measure of public empathy for Eelam Tamils will be measured by all in the form of number of Congress wins there. DMK wins could also factor.

While, other parties could also form coalitions with Sonia-Congress in the post-poll horse trading, symbolic significance of the now pro-Eelam lobby's victory would play on the mind of international policy makers.

Secondly, the new coalition government of India, regardless of who leads it, will have an opportunity to reassess their involvement in the Eelam War.

If India's level of involvement is not reduced, LTTE will abandon conventional strategies. This would primarily mean a return to old-school guerrilla attacks with a lethal dose of terrorist strikes. Regrettably, should this scenario arise, I fear that attacks on Indian soil can not be discounted.

If India retreats then Tigers will try again at conventional methods.

---

p.s. Above is not a threat to India. It is merely my observation, based on ground reports and rhetoric, that many feel India is more to blame for current deaths than Sri Lanka. Western officials have been fairly open with Diaspora representatives in stating that India continues to be the stumbling block for sanctions or resolutions. Add to that the presence of Indian "technicians" on the ground and unlimited free supply of military ornaments, feelings are rightly sour.

Nadesan:

''For the past few days, the army has suffered severe losses like never before. Even its so called special forces had suffered heavily.

The top brass has realized its army's inability. Defeat for army in the near future is certain.

Because of the drastic losses suffered by the army, in desperation, they have started blocking food and medicine to the people and trying to use it a tool against us.

Even they are using banned weapons against our people more and more... as defeat is staring at them.''

Ashok Kumar said...

Peter,

Two things have become clear about the Indian elections:

- ADMK front will win majority of seats in Tamilnadu.

- It is going to be a 'photo finish' at the national level with each BJP and Congress fronts getting around 180- 190 seats each.

So, pro Eelam lobby will have its say, in whichever government is formed at New Delhi.

They will not allow Indian army to be used against Tamils any more, at the least.

If Jayalaitha sends Indian army to attain Eelam or not, this much she can do.

Can Tigers withstand till then, and bounce back? Nadesan is very confident.

Peter said...

ashokkumar2103,

Jaya's comment ought to be taken with a lorry load of salt. I expect the worst from her.

I think Eelam Tamils expectations are two-fold, although I do understand that we can not have it both ways.

Ideally we would like to see at least Congress be fully kicked out of TN. This would give the much needed symbolic message that Tamils are not happy about the Sonia-Congress led war.

More importantly, perhaps, we would like to see a change in Indian policy vis-a-vis the Eelam struggle.

I am in no doubt that Tigers can survive as a conventional force, if Indian support for SL is withdrawn. Not only on the military front, on the diplo-ecnomic front West will add some pressure if India would get-out of the way.

As with Sudan, West has no second thoughts about confronting China at small-failing state level. However, given India is their "strategic partner" in the region, countries like US, UK and France are weary.

What you morons don’t understand is None of Praba’s son or daughter was forced into fighting. When they were at age they got to choose their grave, same with SLA soldier.. they choose their fate. But for those who were forcefully conscripted to LTTE they were robbed of their choice and their Future.
THATS THE BITTER TRUTH.

IT’S A GREAT PRIDE TO FIGHT FOR WHAT YOU BEILIVE IN, BUT IT HAS TO COME WILLINGLY, BUT WHEN YOU FORCE SOMEONE TO DO IT, ITS CALL DICTORSHIP.

You may say SLA solider are doing it because it’s feeding their families. But never the less its their choice. You Tamil morons have no choice, just follow you leader and die. That’s your fate for choosing a leader like Praba

Peter,

I understand your reservations about Jayalalitha. What to do? We have to settle for the lesser evil at this juncture.

According to the trend available, Congress- DMK front will be wiped out in Tamilnadu.

People are going to vote in a big way to the ADMK front in the hope that they will interfere to save the Tamils.

Hope this election result produces some relief to Eelam Tamils.

MGK, Kanthas, good to see you all continuing to comment.

I was busy, but did make every effort to leave comments on 3rd party sites.

As for VP's photos, I think many people had expected him to be like all other 3rd world leaders: kids at private schools in West, regular bashes, gold taps, etc.

It turns out that his kids were living at children's homes, he gave one of the three a single birthday party, eldest is already in the LTTE, and "parties" were restricted to simple meals in small houses.

VP's private life, then, was no more than a lower middle class family anywhere in South Asia. Given that both VP and Mathy have siblings in the Diaspora, they could have led for more materialistic lives. In deed, the cost of all that is shown on DefenceLK photos was probably less than Mrs Rajapaksa's make-up cost, which was revealed by the Sunday Leader to be in the thousands of dollars.

Remember Sinhalese have been saying 48 hours left for Tigers for a fair few months now: before their independence day, before their new year and now before TN elections.

For us, for the time being, it makes better sense to milk the under-dog sympathy to its maximum.

As I have said before, there will be a conventional strike if India decides to pull out, during coalition negotiations or after a new government takes power.

Otherwise, Tigers appear to be all prepared for non-conventional activities. They have had plenty of time to prepare for it.

from Hindu Raam -:)
Will ensure creation of Eelam: Jayalalithaa

Chidambaram (TN) (PTI): With both AIADMK and DMK keen to score brownie points on the Eelam issue, Jayalalithaa on Thursday intensified her pitch saying she would ensure creation of separate homeland for Sri Lankan Tamils if a government which listens to her is formed at the Centre, hours after Karunanidhi too made a similar pledge.

Addressing an election meeting at this temple town, the AIADMK chief said a separate Eelam would be formed on the lines of Bangladesh.

"I will work for that if the people of Tamil Nadu give the AIADMK Front all the seats from the state," she said.

If the AIADMK front won all the seats, only a person pointed out by her could become Prime Minister, she claimed.

She accused Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of remaining a "mute spectator" on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue and said the "concern" shown for Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, accused in the Bofors payoff case, was not being shown for those suffering on the island.

"The UPA Government has not done anything to solve the crisis," he said. She slammed the UPA government for "maladministration" and alleged terrorism had increased during its five-year tenure and the economy was in a shambles.

Earlier, in an "appeal" to party workers on Wednesday night, DMK chief Karunanidhi said: "As a next step, they (Sri Lankan Tamils) should get Eelam and I assumed responsibilities of making all efforts to ensure that 'Eelam' is created."

His statement came days after the AIADMK chief expressed her most vocal support for the Eelam cause.

Tigers, Tamil Diaspora and the Tamil civilian plightby D.B.S. Jeyaraj

IN 1989, this writer attended a conference organised by the pro-Tiger publication Tamil Voice International in London. Among the participants were politicians, journalists and bureaucrats from India such as P. Upendra, S. Unnikrishnan, Aladi Aruna, N.V.N. Somu, K. Veeramani, A.P. Venkateswaran and Samantha Datta Ray.

Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leader Velupillai Prabakaran sent a felicitatory message to the conference. The delegates, consisting mainly of members of the worldwide Sri Lankan Tamil diaspora, were shocked by a reference in that message. Prabakaran described the diaspora as tholaintha santhathi or “lost generation”. The diaspora representatives were seething with anger but were unable or unwilling to challenge the Tiger supremo’s poor opinion of them.

Despite members of the diaspora playing an important role in the affairs of the LTTE, that organisation regarded those who had “left the homeland” (pulam peyarnthor) generally with contempt. The LTTE described them as people who had deserted “Tamil Eelam” at a critical juncture.
A former LTTE spokesperson told a German journalist that the expatriates were economic refugees. The LTTE “poet laureate” Puthuvai. Rathinadurai in a poem called them dogs. That opinion began to change as more and more Tamils left Sri Lanka as refugees to swell the numbers of a global diaspora. Even as contributions to the LTTE decreased at home, the funds from abroad increased. In recent times, the shrinkage of the LTTE sphere of control in the island has resulted in the reduction of the Tigers’ revenue base also.

Thus, the Tigers who had at one time ridiculed the diaspora were compelled to rely more and more on funds raised from it. The bizarre twist was yet to come.

With the LTTE getting gradually boxed into a tiny strip of coastal territory in the Assistant Government Agent division of Karaithuraipattu in Mullaithivu district, the endgame for the Tigers began. The fate of Prabakaran itself was a big question mark.

Desperate, the LTTE turned to the diaspora. The wheel had turned full circle. The LTTE claiming to liberate the Tamil people now started looking to the pulam peyarnthor to extricate itself from the morass it had sunk into.

Need for oxygen

It was felt that only high-level pressure exerted by the international community could compel Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to call off the offensive and enter into negotiations with the LTTE. The Tigers gasping for breath needed oxygen.

For this task, the LTTE hierarchy thought that the Tamil diaspora would be the trump card. Sections of the diaspora in Western countries would mount pressure on their respective governments and make them pressure Colombo. The Tiger lobby in Tamil Nadu was expected to do the same in India.

An international campaign focussing on the plight of Tamil civilians in Tiger-controlled territory was to be orchestrated. Charges of genocide were raised. The objective was to use the civilians’ plight to pressure the international community into fulfilling its responsibility to protect civilians.

The Tigers, who are known for grave political miscalculations, were way off the mark in this too. While being sympathetic to the tragedy, the international community had a different take on its causes and possible remedy. The unwritten consensus was that the LTTE was primarily responsible for the Tamils’ plight. The bulk of the Tamil people were being held against their will by the Tigers. As such the crisis amounted to a “hostage” situation. The best option, therefore, was for the LTTE to release the civilian hostages and discuss terms of surrender. But then the LTTE, which is known for its disconnect with political reality, opted to go along the doomed course. The Tigers, underestimating the collective intellect of the international community, resorted to stratagems that were patently obvious.

In Tamil folklore and everyday usage, there are many sayings and references about the tiger. Pasuthhol porthiya puli is one such descriptive phrase, which means the tiger covered in a cow’s skin or hide.

Metaphorically, this alludes to something fiercely dangerous portraying itself as harmlessly docile-an equivalent of the English idiom “wolf in sheep’s clothing”. An interesting phenomenon within the global Tamil diaspora was the carnivorous tiger attempting to portray itself as a herbivorous cow.

New pattern of protests

A new, different pattern was discernible. For the first time in many years, demonstrations and protests were being staged in Western capitals and important cities without two familiar items. One was the portrait of tiger supremo Prabhakaran and the other the flag with the image of a roaring tiger symbolising the LTTE. They were conspicuous by their absence.

A harsh reality in recent times was that no significant public demonstration or meeting of a political nature could be convened or conducted by anti-Tiger or non-Tiger sections within the diaspora.

Though low-key events with adequate security arrangements were held occasionally by persons independent of the LTTE, it was virtually impossible to organise something “political” on a large scale. Such was the LTTE’s grip on the Tamil diaspora.

With the Tigers enjoying a monopoly of large-scale “public politics”, most demonstrations and meetings organised by the Tiger and pro-Tiger elements usually saw an abundance of placards with Prabakaran’s picture and flags with the tiger emblem.

Against this backdrop, it was indeed a noteworthy deviation from the norm when large-scale political demonstrations and events began proliferating amidst the Tamil diaspora without these familiar objects. The reasons were not hard to seek. Fundamentally it was a change of tactics dictated by the politico-military circumstances in northern Sri Lanka. The situation “back home” for the LTTE was bleak.

Realising fully well that the writing on the wall was clear for the LTTE if this trend continued, its supporters and sympathisers began orchestrating a campaign to “save the Tiger”.

In what seemed a tactical yet puerile manoeuvre to hoodwink the world at large, the lead role in these efforts was delegated to students and youths who were not openly identified as LTTE supporters. Well-known LTTE elements adopted low profiles.

In a further bid to show that the demonstrations were not LTTE-oriented and that the concern displayed was altruistic in purpose, the tell-tale signs of Prabakaran placards and Tiger flags were dispensed with.A facade

The demonstrations were shown as being expressions of concern about the civilian plight. That this humanitarian concern was only a facade was exposed by four factors.

First, no such concern was shown when civilians in the Eastern province were in distress owing to the military campaign or even when civilians in the north-western regions of Wanni were affected. It was only when the LTTE-dominated north-eastern enclave was under threat that this cacophony for civilian concern increased in volume.

Secondly, these voices were stridently loud about the damage and destruction caused by artillery shelling and aerial bombardment by the armed forces but were conspicuously silent on the atrocities committed by the LTTE against its own people. There was no condemnation of the Tigers endangering civilian life, limb and property by locating their artillery and mortars in thickly populated places and engaging the enemy, thus bringing about inevitable retaliatory attacks.

Thirdly, there was no criticism of the LTTE for preventing sections of the people fleeing its territory for safety reasons. The LTTE has killed and injured several civilians for daring to escape its clutches and seek Army protection. Only the armed forces were blamed by these sections of the diaspora.

Fourthly, these sections wanted a permanent ceasefire. The United Nations has called for a temporary ceasefire to help facilitate the humanitarian exercise of evacuating entrapped civilians. But the pro-Tiger elements agitating for civilian protection are not responsive.
They want a permanent ceasefire to safeguard the LTTE. Their intention was to let the LTTE survive further by bringing about an end to the military campaign. They also wanted the entrapped civilians to remain as human shields in Tiger areas rather than obtain safety and relief in government-controlled areas.

While these frantic attempts were on, Colombo seemed to be firm that the military juggernaut should keep on rolling forward until the Tigers were firmly dislodged from their positions and the LTTE’s remnants were chased away. The only way the government’s resolve could have been weakened was through Indian or international intervention.

Despite the endeavours of pro-Tiger elements and the well-meaning concern shown by organisations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, there seemed very little hope that the military campaign would be called off.

At best, there could be a “humanitarian pause” to facilitate evacuation of civilians but a permanent ceasefire seemed unlikely. This was the real situation.

However much the Tiger elements protested and demonstrated about the civilian crisis, neither Colombo nor the international community was prepared to budge. Whenever the demonstrators evinced concern for civilians, they were informed directly and indirectly that the best option was for the LTTE to send civilians out and that arrangements could be made for that.

Tensions within

Meanwhile, tensions emerged within the Tiger ranks. The “old hands” were getting jittery that the “leadership” role was slipping away from their hands to new sections. They were becoming increasingly irrelevant in a “Tiger-free” environment. Resentment at their enforced “eclipse” grew.

The hard-core Tiger elements were also becoming unhappy. These emotion-driven sections are usually devoid of logic and reason. Their usual role is to generate heat and not to shed light. These people started protesting against the new decision to “blackout” the leader and the flag. They remonstrated that it was a betrayal of the struggle.

Aggravating this situation was the cold war between Veerakathy Manivannan alias “Castro”, the accredited head of the LTTE’s overseas branch administration and the newly appointed global Tiger chief Selvarasa Pathmanathan alias “KP”. While KP advocated the “soft” approach of focussing on the civilian predicament, Castro, unwilling to relinquish his power, fomented revolt against the diktat through his hard-line loyalists.

In this situation, the LTTE hawks within the diaspora began to gain the upper hand. The earlier, comparatively sensible, approach was jettisoned. Instead, a defiant but unwise decision to pursue a confrontational course was adopted.

With this change, the focus shifted. The crocodile tears shed for helpless civilians dried up. The demonstrators and protestors began singing a different tune. Instead of lamenting about innocent civilians, they began demanding that the Western nations lift the ban on the LTTE and formally recognise it as the sole representatives of the Tamil people.

The placards showing scenes of suffering civilians and slogans urging international intervention were replaced by ones supportive of the LTTE. Placards with Prabakaran’s portrait were displayed at demonstrations with the slogan “Our leader Prabakaran”. Tiger flags fluttered proudly as crowds chanted “LTTE sole representative”.

There was a cosmetic change in the flag. The two rifles at the bottom went missing in some. The glib explanation was that the flag with a roaring tiger sans the firearms was the “Tamil national flag”.

The official flag of the LTTE until then had the image of rifles on it. In one swift move, the LTTE exposed its true colours.

The diaspora demonstrations now openly identified themselves with the Tiger cause. The poor civilians were abandoned. The tiger had shed its cowskin and was on the prowl with its growl.

When demonstrations focusing on the civilian plight were held earlier there were signs of a been a slow but gradual growth of sympathy for the tragic Tamil civilian plight among the governments, people and the media in the West. An important reason for this was the absence of Tiger symbols and emblems in the public demonstrations. The problem was being viewed in humanitarian terms and a possible change of heart may have evolved.

The logical and humanitarian course to be adopted by the Tamil diaspora was to persist with its earlier role of focussing on the civilian predicament alone. Shifts in public opinion take time. Though not definite a possible change may have been on the cards.

Instead, the LTTE hierarchy blundered in a typical fashion by readopting its earlier hard-line stance. Complicating matters further were consistent media revelations that the LTTE was holding the bulk of civilians against their will and had even brutally punished those trying to escape.Since the pro-tiger demonstrators glossed over or denied the infamous conduct of the LTTE international public opinion could not be swayed. The “civilian plight card” by LTTE had outlived its usefulness. The confrontational course of affirming solidarity with an organisation banned in many Western countries and expressing loyalty to a man like Prabakaran as “national leader” was not going down well with the mainstream opinion in the West.

This trend in public opinion became more and more visible. Media coverage began dropping in quality and quantity. Mainstream Western politicians, except for a few, started avoiding demonstrations and meetings where Prabakaran placards and Tiger flags were displayed.

In spite of massive demonstrations , paralyzing traffic at times, most mainstream Western politicians particularly those holding political office avoided any public identification with demonstrators.

At one point demonstrators started playing childisg games like folding up tiger flags for periods of time to enable politicians to show up at demonstrations and raising them again when expected leaders did not turn up.Things took a turn for the worse as the LTTE declined further back home. A new “militancy” was displayed abroad.

Committing self-immolation, going on fasts unto death, stopping traffic on public roads, storming public departments and Ministry buildings, protesting outside embassies, high commissions and consulates, throwing rotten eggs and tomatoes, vandalising Sri Lankan and Indian diplomatic missions and other acts in similar vein started spreading.

A disturbing trend was the tendency on the part of young activists to confront the law-enforcement authorities. There were also incidents of friction with members of the Sinhala diaspora who had commenced counter-demonstrations.

A tactical blunder by the diaspora is its ethno-centric approach to what is essentially a humanitarian catastrophe. If it dispenses with its tiger-oriented agitation and alters the focus to that of a human rights perspective there are vast possibilities of attracting many human rights organizations also into joining the demonstrations. But the LTTE flavour prevents such a wider mobilisation.

Likewise another mistake is depicting all Sinhala people as the enemy. There are many liberal and/or left - leaning Sinhalese who would join in demonstrations to protest the killing of innocent civilians by both sides. But the tiger dimension naturally repels such people

Sadly, the younger generation of the Tamil diaspora is being politicised and radicalised for an unworthy and unwinnable cause. Moreover, the demonstrators’ open identification with the LTTE had rendered the campaign ineffective with no scope for success. It is indeed pathetic to see the passionate idealism of youth being diverted and sidetracked into a dead end.

This short-sighted conduct of the LTTE within the diaspora is just one more instance of the irreparable damage inflicted upon the Tamil people by the Tigers. After having brought Tamils to the precipice of disaster in Sri Lanka, the LTTE is now compelling the diaspora to embark upon a confrontational course with Western governments and law-enforcement authorities.Unless saner elements among the Tamil diaspora are willing and able to protest against the monstrous activities of the LTTE in their midst, this trend is likely to continue. Apart from being totally counterproductive to their own interests, this conduct of the LTTE will in the long run stigmatise the Tamil diaspora as being supporters of terrorism.

This certainly is not in the best interests of the global Tamil diaspora in the long run.

The Racist SL government things that they can change Tamils people mind by posing the Praba's family picture. From the pictures it is very clear that he is leading an ordinary life and dedicated his life for freedom of the TAMIL people.

He had lot of opportunity to quite the freedom struggle and leading a king’s life in a western country, instated he choose to fight for Tamil Struggle.

This is a another screw up from the racist Sl government’s propaganda machine.

THE RACE FOR EELAM

Well guys many people doubt Jayalalitha. You know she was never against the LTTE, i think she was the least bothered. Less the so called threats to her life. Peter I guess you and many people are sceptical of the Indian army bringing eelam etc.

Firstly if you guys including the Sri Lankans have seen my comments in defencewire before, I said that Jaya only was anti LTTE because she was in the opposition and to capitalise on the event she became anti LTTE. Else she could be least bothered. However as an inteligent person, she has understood the ground.

Many people thing that her descion was sudden. WRONG. Way before she shocked the DMK by all the AIADMK MLAs voting for eelam issue etc in the state assembly. The reason is simple. The dravidian movement as an effective vote bank is on a decline in tamilnadu. Generally the feeling is that the dravidian sentiment just like sinhala sentiment was used and is still used to loot the people. In all honesty just like the sinhalese the tamil nadu politicians do not descend from the pure backgrounds.

Sadly most sinhalese politicians are either tamil or malaylee with hindu or christian origin. Mahidha is a stauch malaylee hindu who went to kerela to give thanks while his wife is a stauch catholic. Yet they are so effective in their sinhala buddisht championing. Likewise Karunanidhi is of telegu origin while Jaya who claims to be of tamil iyegnar origin is likely to be the mysore maharaja's daughter.

Hence at the end of the day their sentiments to the race issue is elsewhere. However with new parties like dmdk getting 8% of the vote bank and for the first time DMK had to form a minority government with congress support foretold the things to come.

In fact an AIADMK MLA in a stalin rally few years back even proposed the merging of the dravidian parties and was reprimanded by Jayalalitha.

Now jaya will enact her promise of eelam as soon as possible after may16 because she would also go to coalition which will support the dismissing of the dmk government. Mulyam singh yadav has said that he would ally would any party that would dismiss the mayawathi government.

Hence for Jaya she needs to put the eelam issue on the forefront so that within 6 months she will sweep to power in tamilnadu. Remeber that even with a clean sweep of the parlimentry seats the dmk could not get a lion share of the seat sharing with congress and allies after that sweep. It ended in the minority government state only because it had to nearly win all the seats feilded. Jaya on her own had no change in support in the state legislator elections.

Hence this eelam promise and its delivery would play a crucial role in ensuring her victory in the state assembly.

You hear the BJP and Left distancing away from the eelam issue and even negating its possibility. Simple, as far as a marathi, telegu or punjabi, he does not want india to fight for eelam to get a seperate state. Why do they care. Hence supporting her stance now would mean a loss of votes. Congress through rahul's own admission is weak and likely to be lucky to rival the BJP or left.

I said several post ago, i am getting a creeping feeling that the left might surge. Anyway once the election is over and the horse trading starts the conclusion will be very much a eelam.

After rahul's comments karunadhi has told that he cannot campaign on the same platform as sonia. He has also jumped onto the eelam bandwagon. Simple should he be dumped, he will lose the state assembly and needs eelam to prevent a wipeout.

Hence my title, the race for eelam. As far as the Sri Lankans who come here and try their level best to dissuade the eelam people by posting the propaganda from washouts, you should realise one thing, Sri Lankan split the day one language policy was announced. The split was sealed when one religion policy was announced. You are fighting the inevitable.

Unknown said...

There is a lull in fighting as Sri lanka prays that things would turn out differently. However the debasing of the rupee is inevitable. Hence during the lull it is trying to divert attention to prabha photos etc. Even their people will realise why he lives and fights while their people drive aston martins and go round womanising and still get to loot their country with impunity.

Well well, it seems that Puthumatalan Peter did not self-immolate after all (yet...). We missed you, Pete. All the Eelamoid "dogs" have been pulling their hair out over the last week.

So let me guess- Chubby Charles Anthony received a degree in aeronautical engineering (or was it computers?) from Vanni Tech (the Harvard of Tamileelam)???

"All in all, it shows the humble life the leader led. At most, he probably spared US$100 a month for the up-keep of his family."

I don't think Thalaivar could've got that lavish birthday cake to feed Chubby Charles's chubby face on $100 a month. Nice try, Puthu Pete.

Global Crisis ‘Vastly Worse’ Than 1930s, Taleb Says (Update1)
Share | Email | Print | A A A

By Shiyin Chen and Liza Lin

May 7 (Bloomberg) -- The current global crisis is “vastly worse” than the 1930s because financial systems and economies worldwide have become more interdependent, “Black Swan” author Nassim Nicholas Taleb said.

“This is the most difficult period of humanity that we’re going through today because governments have no control,” Taleb, 49, told a conference in Singapore today. “Navigating the world is much harder than in the 1930s.”

The International Monetary Fund last month slashed its world economic growth forecasts and said the global recession will be deeper than previously predicted as financial markets take longer to stabilize. Nouriel Roubini, 51, the New York University professor who predicted the crisis, told Bloomberg News yesterday that analysts expecting the U.S. economy to rebound in the third and fourth quarter were “too optimistic.”

“Certainly the rate of economic contraction is slowing down from the freefall of the last two quarters,” Roubini said. “We are going to have negative growth to the end of the year and next year the recovery is going to be weak.”

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke told lawmakers May 5 that the central bank expects U.S. economic activity “to bottom out, then to turn up later this year.” Another shock to the financial system would undercut that forecast, he added.

‘Big Deflation’

The global economy is facing “big deflation,” though the risks of inflation are also increasing as governments print more money, Taleb told the conference organized by Bank of America- Merrill Lynch. Gold and copper may “rally massively” as a result, he added.

Taleb, a professor of risk engineering at New York University and adviser to Santa Monica, California-based Universa Investments LP, said the current global slump is the worst since the Great Depression that followed Wall Street’s 1929 crash.

The Great Depression saw an increase in global trade barriers and was only overcome after President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal policies helped revive the U.S. economy.

The world’s largest economy may need additional fiscal stimulus to emerge from its current recession, Kenneth Rogoff, former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund, told Bloomberg News yesterday.

“We’re going to get to the point where recovery is just not soaring and they’re going to do the same again,” he said. “We’re going to have a very slow recovery from here.”

Fiscal Stimulus

The U.S. economy plunged at a 6.1 percent annual pace in the first quarter, making this the worst recession in at least half a century. President Barack Obama signed a $787 billion stimulus plan into law in February that included increases in spending on infrastructure projects and a reduction in taxes.

Gold, copper and other assets “that China will like” are the best investment bets as currencies including the dollar and euro face pressures, Taleb said. The IMF expects the global economy to shrink 1.3 percent this year.

Gold, which jumped to a record $1,032.70 an ounce March 17, 2008, is up 3.6 percent this year. Copper for three-month delivery on the London Metal Exchange has surged 55 percent this year on speculation demand will rebound as the global economy recovers from its worst recession since World War II.

Commodity prices are also gaining amid signs that China’s 4 trillion yuan ($585 billion) stimulus package is beginning to work in Asia’s second-largest economy. Quarter-on-quarter growth improved significantly in the first three months of 2009, the Chinese central bank said yesterday, without giving figures.

Credit Derivatives

China will avoid a recession this year, though it will not be able to pull Asia out of its economic slump as the region still depends on U.S. demand, New York University’s Roubini said.

Equity investments are preferable to debt, a contributor to the current financial crisis, Taleb said. Deflation in an equity bubble will have smaller repercussions for the global financial system, he added.

“Debt pressurizes the system and it has to be replaced with equity,” he said. “Bonds appear stable but have a lot of hidden risks. Equity is volatile, but what you see is what you get.”

Currency and credit derivatives will cause additional losses for companies that hold more than $500 trillion of the securities worldwide, Templeton Asset Management Ltd.’s Mark Mobius told the same Singapore conference today.

“There are going to be more and more losses on the part of companies that have credit derivatives, those who have currency derivatives,” Mobius, who helps oversee $20 billion in emerging-market assets at Templeton, said at the conference. “This is something we’re going to have to watch very, very carefully.”

Taleb is best known for his book “The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable.” The book, named after rare and unforeseen events known as “black swans,” was published in 2007, just before the collapse of the subprime market roiled global financial institutions.

"As I have said before, there will be a conventional strike if India decides to pull out, during coalition negotiations or after a new government takes power."

But Nutty Navindran thinks the Indian Army will be deployed deliver Tamileelam!!

"Peter I guess you and many people are sceptical of the Indian army bringing eelam etc."

Which Eelamoid should we trust- the dimwitted or the halfwitted??

Weak Picture:

Sri Lanka budget deficit can expand to 9.0-pct of GDP: IMF report

May 07, 2009 (LBO) - An International Monetary Fund (IMF) report says low income Asian nations with dollar pegs and weak state finances have few options to 'stimulate' demand, and Sri Lanka's budget deficit could go over 9.0 percent of the economy.

Among five Asian low income countries featured in a report on the Asia Pacific region's economic outlook, Sri Lanka has had the worst deficits in the past three years, followed by Mongolia and Bangladesh.
"In Asia, the substantially weaker revenue outlook together with concerns about the quality of additional spending and about debt sustainability would indicate that there is little scope for further fiscal stimulus by governments," the IMF said in a regional economic outlook published this week.

"In most cases, a reprioritization of spending toward strengthening the social safety net is the most viable response."

IMF said Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and Laos had problems with debt sustainability.

In 2007 and 2008 Sri Lanka has had deficits of 7.7 percent of gross domestic product (GDP). IMF is projecting a deficit in excess 9.0 percent of GDP for 2009.

A 6.5 percent deficit target was projected in the original budget for 2009.

This year Sri Lanka's revenues have been hit by a collapse in imports. The government had responded by raising import duties. Corporate profitability is also low. CT Smith Stockbrokers said profits of 212 reporting companies listed in the Colombo Stock Exchange was down 68 percent in December quarter against the previous year.
Inflation Effect

Official projections for inflation are also low in 2009, which can increase the budget deficit number as a proportion of GDP, as nominal growth in the economy will be low.

When inflation is high, nominal economic growth is also high, dwarfing the budget deficit as a proportion of GDP. Last year Sri Lanka's economy expansion was 23 percent when inflation was included.

Deficit spending is only effective in 'stimulating' an economy if money can be printed or borrowed from abroad. Otherwise rising interest rates will land the country back in square one or worse by crowding out activities of non-state players.

Countries with exchange rate pegs will also have macro-economic instability in the form of high inflation, or a breaking exchange rate pegs.

"In Asia, the limited scope for countercyclical easing is also because of dollarization, weak financial institutions, and exchange rate pegs," the IMF report said.

"High vulnerability together with weak public expenditure management, ineffective monetary transmission mechanisms, and other policy constraints may reduce the scope and effectiveness of countercyclical policies."

In a country that runs a peg, only foreign borrowing can really push up economic growth.

Pegged countries that deficit spent and printed money also risked losing their foreign reserves.

"In the absence of additional sources of finance, domestically financed public investment programs are coming under pressure—in cases where adjustment is not being made, the pressure risks spilling over onto international reserves," IMF warned.

Sri Lanka is already in a balance of payments crisis with almost 200 billion rupees being printed in the seven months to March.

Coupled

The report said high income Asian countries had suffered growth reversals greater than the countries in which the crisis originated

"The spillovers from the global crisis have impacted Asia with unexpected speed and force," the IMF report said.

"The intensity of the downswing has outstripped what could have been anticipated based on the historical correlation between business cycles in the G-2 (the euro area and the United States) and Asia.

"Indeed, the downswing has been even larger than in other regions, and sharper than at the epicenter of the global crisis.

"In the fourth quarter of 2008, GDP in Asia excluding China and India plummeted by close to 15 percent on a seasonally adjusted annualized basis."

Low income Asian countries have been hit by collapsing export commodity prices, especially Laos, Mongolia and Papua New Guinea. Lower demand for garments and aggressive price cuts had hurt countries like Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Falling agricultural prices were also hurting rural incomes.

High income countries have suffered from a collapse in demand for advanced manufactured goods. Hong Kong and Taiwan which were exporting goods for final assembly in China have been hit by a double whammy.

Suppliers to Japan of products such as auto parts also suffered the same fate, resulting in a downturn in intra-regional trade as well.

Recovery

Analysts say the only way to de-couple is to break exchange rate pegs and boost domestic consumption, by floating exchange rates up. Appreciating exchange rates, backed by a domestic anchor allows domestic consumption to go up.

"Although exchange rate appreciation may not be a realistic strategy at present as most Asian currencies are under pressure to depreciate, it may become so over the longer term," the IMF report said.

IMF research has shown that recovering from a downturn in which the banking sector is hurt is protracted and more painful.

"Minimizing the depth and duration of the current recession means essentially two things for Asia: preserving the stability of core banking systems, and putting less emphasis on an export recovery," IMF said.

"History suggests that cracks in the banking sector could worsen an already painful recession."

Wijayapala now i understand why you goons come here and blabber. If you dont you will be considered LTTE supporters. Sri Lanka is Fucked.

The MP who cited an example alleged that that some teachers are forced to contribute a part of their salary and are been labelled as LTTE supporters if they fail to do it for a genuine reason.

From the Pro LTTE Daily mirror

People eternal debtors: JVP

By Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera
In a stunning disclosure, the Parliament was told yesterday that the country would be able to come out of public debt fully only in 2047.

JVP MP Sunil Handunnetti who spoke during the adjournment debate on the country’s economy said Sri Lanka’s total debt has reached a staggering Rs 3.400 billion over the last few years.

He said the annual interest had reached Rs 200 billion putting the nation into a precarious position economically. Mr. Handunetti said the government was facing a task of finding Rs 417 billion by the year 2010 to pay off the due debt instalments.

The JVP MP also informed the House that the proposed standout of the IMF would only be an adjustment loan which would be subjected to many conditions. He questioned as to whether the devaluation of the rupee had taken place in line with this condition. The JVP MP also informed that the Sri Lankan rupee has reached its lowest level against the US dollar in the history. He said a dollar was Rs 121 according to the exchange rates yesterday.

Referring to the Nation Building Tax he said its impact was invisible as the tax was imposed on imported goods when it reached the Port. He explained that the tax was computed according to the CIF value of the goods and several other taxes including Customs Duty, Surcharge, Cess, Port and Airport Development Levy Special Provisions Duty are also added up when the stocks come out from the Port.

He charged the government’s sincerity on collecting the Nation Building Tax is questionable as one cannot certify how it is spending the funds which are collected to build the nation. The MP who cited an example alleged that that some teachers are forced to contribute a part of their salary and are been labelled as LTTE supporters if they fail to do it for a genuine reason.

Minister Mahinda Amaraweera who responded denied the charges and said no one was forced to make such contributions.

On the photographs of VP released by the SL government, apart from causing heartburn to LTTE supporters, it ain't going to cause much of an impact. Jaded westerners are used to seeing third world leaders living in luxury; VP seems to be living a lower middle class life, bless his fat heart.

On the Indian army coming in to extricate the LTTE, not a chance in hell. Jayalalitha is making noises, which she will back off from five minutes after the election results. Even if she doesn't, the BJP will not let it happen. No central Indian government will.

MR is keep on saying that SL will get the IMF loan without any condition , but the reality is IMF will not grant the loan without a condtion. The IMF will drag on the loan processing as long as it can. Libya will not give loan without the approval from the US.

I belive we will see a firm action from the West and UN after May 16 ( one more week to go ).

I really believe before 11th May,6PM we will get some gripping news from Lanka. The Tiger's will definitely try to provide some fodder to noisemakers in TN to make a hue and cry before campaigning comes to an end.

TN poll results could ring in huge surprise this time around.People are frustrated and I have never seen before leader's being exposed like this.
1>Tamils in Karnataka were attacked and there was vicious violence during the Cauvery river dispute.Common man didnt see Poiko running helter skelter to Delhi, which he normaly does even when a rollcap goes off in Lanka.
2>We had Mullaiperiyaar dispute with Kerala. We didnt see anyone running to Delhi, including PoiKo,ex-glamour queen included. She was very busy taking rest in Ooty.
3>We had Hogenakkal power plant being stalled at initial stage itself as BJP Govt in Karnataka lays claim to the place itself.Still Poiko didnt see it as worthy enough to run to Delhi.
4>We are having acute power shortage in TN and noone talks about it.

Common man remember's all this. His problems will not be solved if Eelam is formed or if VP is roasted or if he absconds to another country, reminding everyone that cyanide capsules are only for lowlife's and not for him.But the issue's listed above affects him and if any party had the visibility to canvass on that, they would have had the upper hand.

People are frustrated with all parties, noone is spared. So this election results will be very very interesting.

["His problems will not be solved if Eelam is formed or if VP is roasted or if he absconds to another country, reminding everyone that cyanide capsules are only for lowlife's and not for him."]

Some Sinhalese and Hindians don't seem to understand the concept of cyanide. Cyanide is to be taken when you are about to be captured. That doesn't mean you sit and let them capture you. Everyone should try their best to fight or escape, and if they are left with no other option except capture, then they should take cyanide to avoid torture.

Without using intelligence or logic, you want to criticize Prabhakaran for escaping from the siege (even though he is present there right now fighting along side his people). You say that he shouldn't try to escape, he should take cyanide. You obviously are an idiot. Where has anyone ever said you should not try to escape from the enemy?

This lack of intelligence and logical thinking is why IPKF couldn't defeat the LTTE despite outnumbering them 50 to 1. Its the same reason the Sri Lankan government couldn't defeat the LTTE for 30 years despite being supported by virtually every country around, and outnumbering them 100 to 1. "Hey, you people are cheating, you didn't take cyanide and die like we expect you to."

- It is true that money is being paid to purchase the votes. At Thirumangalam byelections held recently, Azhagiri used it extensively to ensure DMK victory. But despite the currency onslaught, ADMK front will win in majority of the contituencies.

Mqk,

Karunanidhi's Eelam call has come too late. Already Jaya has made it as her primary election promise to the electorate with good impact. She is campaigning very hard, but Karunanudhi is hospitalized to the disadvantage of the DMK. As DMK is aligned with Sonia, Karunanidhi's late endorsement of Eelam has no takers.

Saul,

Thanks for the correction.

The Sri Lankan government’s absolute refusal Thursday for a ceasefire in its civil war with Tamil rebels to allow humanitarian aid to get to civilians trapped in the fighting and allow them to flee is troubling, Canada’s foreign affairs minister says.

“I’m extremely disappointed,” Lawrence Cannon said. “We have called for a ceasefire for months now. We want these people to receive basic needs and medical attention.”
Cannon’s remarks came hours after Sri Lanka’s President Mahinda Rajapaksa rejected renewed calls from several countries and the U.N. to halt military operations against the rebels, who are now pinned down on a small piece of land along with an estimated 50,000 civilians.

Navindran,

Your observation that Jayalaitha has to stick to her Eelam promise, if she has to win the forthcoming assembly elections is very accurate.

It will become a compulsion for her to deliver her promise.

As now Karunanihi has also started voicing his call for 'Eelam', there is going to be a competition between them to claim the credit for helping 'Eelam Tamils'.

This rivalry may push both of them to act in favour of the 'Eelam Tamil cause.'

Karunanidhi is not likely to give up so soon. He may come up with some new plot.

Because, if defeated in the elections, Congress will desert him. He will not be part of the new government at the centre and he will lose power in Tamilnadu also (as he is surviving with the congress support in the assembly).

At present, he is making appeals from the hospital bed, trying to get some sympathy.

This image Badrinath chose for this thread of Tamil families being held behind barbed wire in their own homeland by the SL armed forces will become one of the iconic images of this conflict and will be seared into the memory of Tamils forever.

This incarceration of entire Tamil communities does raise some important legal questions. What is the law that is being applied here? The anti-terrorism law, as draconian as it is does not permit the detention of entire families including babies for up to three years. So clearly, the Sri Lankan constitution and laws do not extend to the North-East region. Why is this? Isn’t this an open acknowledgement that the phenomenon occurring in the North-East is not a “war on terror”, but a blatant attempt by one state to annex another? The implication is that the rule of law and constitution of the invaders will only take affect in the annexed territories after an arbitrary period of time, during which the annexation will be consolidated through brute force which will include disappearances, torture, the denial medicine, rape and starvation. All made possible by preventing independent media and NGOs to enter the region.

So on the one hand the GOSL insists that this is an “internal matter” and that its sovereignty is not negotiable, and on the other hand it behaves in a manner that proves the opposite. Internment camps are not a novel concept and have been used by the British in South Africa, and by the US in Vietnam, but even in those cases the camps were created outside the countries of the invading armies. No one claims that the laws of the US should have applied in Vietnamese internment camps. The only instance that comes to mind where a government created concentration camps on its own sovereign territory is Germany under Hitler. We all know how that turned out.

I'm here to interact primarily with the Eelamoids, but your above statement does not slide. TN along with the other southern Indian states is actually doing relatively well with economic growth, education, and other indicators. The poor states are in the "Hindi belt" in the north.

I have been to TN a number of times and I've been amazed how much it would change since the last visit. The streets certainly don't stink, at least not any more or less than in SL (although there is a smell distinct from that in SL).

Congress lost power in 1967 and never returned again, true. It lost due to anti-Hindi agitations, well half true and half not.

In 1967,Rajaji split from the Congress and formed the Swatantra party. He split the Congress votes. He also engineered a 5 party alliance to ensure the anti congress votes didnt split.

Congress lost in 1967 and even leader's like Kamarajar \ Bhaktavatsalam(then CM) lost

But apart from all the alliance, split etc it was one guy who changed the fortunes forever. It was M R Radha. When he shot MGR,DMK's win was sealed. It was poster's of a MGR with banded neck in hospital bed which overwhelmingly pulled women and men alike. It was a combination of factors which led to Congress downfall in 1967.

Then Kamarajar split from Congress to establish Sthabana Congress and INC never regrouped again in TN

To my understanding, Rajaji did not have a strong following in TN even though he was a nationally-recognized leader. Swatantra was a national party and had little if any impact in TN, so I don't think that he split the Congress vote in TN (although he may have split the nationwide Congress vote). Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I was not aware of this- I had often wondered exactly what led to the fall of TN Congress in 1967, given Kamaraj's immense popularity and the fact that Hindi imposition had taken place over a decade ago.

I would like to hear your views about a potential Congress-ADMK alliance. They were allies in the past and I don't see a reason why JJ and Sonia can mend the fences if both their parties come to power in TN and India respectively.

I agree with Peter- JJ will never drag TN into the total failure that is Tamileelam. She is just trying to win the election. There might not even be an LTTE by the time the election is over. The Sri Lankan military announced Friday the re-demarcation of the northeastern no fire zone.

Military officials said the previously defined safe zone for civilians has now been redemarated to match current realities, and the new area is 2km x 1.5 kms.

The military announced in mid February that an NFZ for civilians in the Mullaithivu district's Puttumatalan coastal strip. The original area of extent was 12 sq kms.

Since then the troops advanced further into the NFZ and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were confined to an area of 4.5 sq kms.

Analysts said re-defining safe zone was to take account of military's ground advances.

The government said the objective of declaring a NFZ was to secure the release of Tamil civilians whom they allege the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) are holding as human shields.

Some 120,000 civilians fled the area with troops piercing a defense earth bund built by the rebels.

Around 50,000 people are still believed trapped in the area

Urgent international scrutiny needed in Sri Lanka, say UN rights experts

Civilians fleeing the no fire zone in Sri Lanka
8 May 2009 – A group of independent United Nations experts today called on the Human Rights Council to urgently set up an international inquiry to address the “critical” situation in Sri Lanka amid fighting between the army and Tamil rebels.

“There is an urgent need to establish an international commission of inquiry to document the events of recent months and to monitor ongoing developments,” the experts dealing with summary executions, right to health, right to food and water and sanitation said in a joint statement issued in Geneva.

Philip Alston, Anand Grover, Olivier De Schutter and Catarina de Albuquerque said the current humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka gives cause for deep concern, not only in terms of the number of civilians who have been and continue to be killed, but because of a dramatic lack of transparency and accountability.

“There is good reason to believe that thousands of civilians have been killed in the past three months alone, and yet the Sri Lankan Government has yet to account for the casualties, or to provide access to the war zone for journalists and humanitarian monitors of any type,” said Mr. Alston, the UN expert on summary executions.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) says over 196,000 people have fled the conflict zone, a shrinking pocket of land on the north-east coastline, where clashes continue between Government troops and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), while at least 50,000 people are still trapped there.

The experts stressed that “continuing catastrophic situation of civilians” in Sri Lanka trapped in the midst of the fighting, in an area measuring less than 10 square kilometres, must be immediately addressed.

“These civilians do not have sufficient access to food, essential medical supplies or services and safe water and sanitation. Even if they do escape death or injury at the hands of the hostile parties, their continued presence in this area without access to these basic rights is an effective death sentence,” declared the experts.

They said shipments of food and medicine to the so-called 'no-fire zone' have been “grossly insufficient” over the past month and the Government has reportedly delayed or denied timely shipment of life saving medicines as well as chlorine tablets.

The experts noted that as a result of the “blackout on independent information sources,” it is impossible to verify any of the Government's claims as to the number of casualties to date or as to the steps that it says it is taking in order to minimize the further killing of innocent civilians, and ensure aid delivery.

“When people manage to escape, they reportedly continue to face scant supplies, entirely insufficient access to adequate medical treatment and severely overcrowded hospitals, providing no relief to the horrors they had been living,” said Mr. Grover, the UN expert on the right to health.

Mr. De Schutter, the UN expert on the right to food, added that access to food has also been hampered by arduous and lengthy registration procedures for the internally displaced persons (IDPs).

Meanwhile, Ms. de Albuquerque, the UN expert on water and sanitation, voiced concern about “water shortages reported at Omanthai and at most of the transit sites as well as inadequate sanitation facilities, which put the health and lives of the population at further risk.”

The group called on the Sri Lankan Government to provide “convincing evidence” to the international community that it is respecting its obligations under human rights and international humanitarian law.

They added that it is clear that the LTTE, for its part, has acted in “flagrant violation” of the applicable norms by preventing civilians from leaving the conflict area and having reportedly shot and killed those trying to flee.

If anything, JJ will do a much greater job than Kalaignar in managing the emotions of the TN Tamils while keeping them out of SL. Note that despite openly calling for a Tamil homeland, she has not made a single statement in support of the LTTE. Kalaignar on the other hand foolishly blurted that Thalaivar is not a terrorist, and received no support in doing so. In fact, JJ quite cleverly ridiculed Sonia Gandhi for remaining silent over MK's idiotic pro-LTTE remarks.

Dear Indian,

What do you think??? No Indians are here in the blog? or Indians do not know the history????

MGRs shot was a different thing. First of all in 1962, Rajaji was in alliance with DMK but both the parties could not win the Assembly. In fact DMK could only 13 seats. The major factor was the Anti Hindi agitation. In fact, the DMK used it as its political ladder.
Annadurai, a intelligent leader used the entire Hindi agitation in 1965 against the Congress and came to power.
In fact every house has got its own stories during that period. My father himself was in jail for more than 3 months for the anti hindi agitation.
MGRs shooting is one factor which would have got 1% extra votes. Please read the following lines.

In January 1967, he was shot in the neck by fellow actor M.R. Radha. The bullet was permanently lodged in his neck and his voice damaged. Within hours of the shooting, some 50,000-odd fans had gathered at the hospital where MGR had been taken. People cried in the streets; shops closed. For six weeks, he lay in the hospital as fans awaited each report of his health. He was visited by a steady stream of commoners and luminaries of film industry, polity and bureaucracy. At the time of the shooting incident, MGR's popularity had been in gradual decline. The shooting however helped his popularity surge to hitherto unprecedented heights.

This is the reality. After that, Congress could not come to power. In fact in 1972, the margins in the elections were much higher. In fact, its Periyar who has played a vital role in the entire transformation. Please do not tweak teh history. In 1977, MK has lost power to another Dravidaian party ADMK - and could not come to power again.

Its the anti-Hindi which has got the congress out of the power and not anything else. And as a staunch supporter of DMK, i can see its going to be the Ealam issue which is going to seal congress in TN and at the same time its the same issue which has got the potential to dislodge DMK from power like congress.

The most important thing that civilized leaders can and should do is to not listen to the rantings of ignorant Eelamoids like yourself.

The Lion Flag was originally the standard of the last king of Kandy (the last sovereign leader of Sri Lanka), Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe- who was a Telugu-speaking Madurai Nayakkar not an ethnic Sinhala ruler. The lion's sword has absolutely nothing to do with the Dutugemunu-Elara story.

The Lion Flag itself was proposed by a Muslim MP to be the national flag. To the flag was added the green and orange of the Indian tricolor representing communal harmony (or the Tamil/Hindu and Muslim minorities, however you want to see it).

On the concept of flags, MGK, what do you think about the "Tamil National Flag" which is nothing more than the LTTE flag with or without the rifles??? Since when was the Tiger a historical symbol of the SL Tamils (compared to the Jaffna Nandhi, or the Batticaloa Singing Fish)????

Thank you for acknowledging that the LTTE is militarily washed up. I hope Peter's feelings won't get hurt.

If I were you I'd go for the politically more savvy outfit. Mahatma Gandhi won independence for all of India without firing a single shot. Thalaivar on the other hand fought a losing war for over 25 years that won nothing except for the "genocide" of Tamils.

"Also how can JJ support LTTE, when Kalaignar and the Congress mafia are over enthusiasm to imprison LTTE supporters."

Why hasn't the mafia imprisoned Vaiko, Ramdoss, Nedumaran, Veeramani and other assorted TN political jokers??

"DW is getting ridiculous "but" if its true then this must be the outcome of torching of a few Hindian "dummy" army trucks !!!"

Not really- more likely the outcome of the Menon and Narayanan visits, as DW suggested. It makes little difference whether Thalaivar is whacked right before or right after the Indian election, and that is why it won't hurt to wait. Interesting that both the Sinhala "patriots" on DW and the Eelamoids haven't grasped that.

Only a fool would say MGR's shooting had only 1% to contribute. If MGR was 1%,care to explain why no one was able to hoist the flat at St.George fort until he died?Heck he won elections without even going for campaigning.I dont think any leader in the world over can claim to have done that.

That itself tells a lot of story isnt it?Anna knew this and thats why he once famously said to MGR " I dont need anything from you;Just show your face alone;we will sweep the polls".Thats the MGR charisma - the charisma that keeps pulling votes even now. There are still people who vote for the 2 leaves symbol and not for JJ or anything else. Its the fact.

But one thing we all agree I think. That JJ+Ramadoss will very well swing sides. All that Congress has to do is to emerge as the largest party and the rest of the pieces will fall in place automatically.

Okie guys,enough of predictions.

May I add that the Lion flag was not the original flag of SL, it was the "ira-handa" (Sun & Moon) flag that was used from the earliest of days. The lion is the symbol of the royal lineage of SL kings. As wijayapala also says, the symbol of the lion was used by the SL kings, be they Sinha, Kalinga, Nayakkar clans. The sword of the lion stands to say that we will bravely protect our mother nation, all its peoples and the great values we uphold. We have withstood against all odds for 3000+ years and we would be there till the end of eternity. So, it's goodbye to poor old parapaharan.....

There is no question that he is beeing groomed to take over from Sonia as leader of Congress. However, if Congress is reelected this time it's almost certain to lose in 2014 because of the anti-incumbancy factor after 10 years unders the same party.

Your calculations that DMK should get around 10 seats as counter weight is interesting.

But if the Tamil lobby has more numbers, it can influence centre better. Because we need strong pressure to move things our way.

Best scenario would be Congress getting less than 130 seats and ADMK front getting 30- 40 seats in Tamilnadu.

Then BJP will be the single largest party with a chance to form the government.

Rahul Gandhi will be 44 years old in 2014. That's the age JFK was when he took office, He will be 3 years younger than Barack Obama was when he was campaigning and 4 years olders than his own father was when he became PM. Typically young charismatic candidates are able to galvanize the youth vote and do well in elections when they run as agents of change (Think Barack Obama and JFK). Rahul Gandhi will not be able to do this in 2014 if Congress forms the government this year, instead he will be the face of a 10 year incumbency.

Rights group: Sri Lanka shelling hospitals
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Human Rights Watch on Saturday accused Sri Lankan forces of repeatedly striking hospitals in the northern war zone with indiscriminate artillery and aerial attacks that have killed scores of people, a charge the military denied.

The New York-based group claimed military commanders responsible for ordering or conducting such attacks "may be prosecuted for war crimes."

The accusation came amid growing international concern for an estimated 50,000 civilians caught in the fighting between government forces and the separatist Tamil Tigers.

In the latest clashes, naval vessels destroyed two rebel boats after a sea battle off the northeast coast Saturday, killing at least 14 rebels, a military statement said.

On Friday, troops pushed further into the rebel territory, capturing an earthen fortification. The military said soldiers found 35 bodies of rebel fighters killed in the fighting.

There was no comment from rebels and it is difficult to verify the military's claims because reporters and independent observers are barred from the war zone.

Government troops in recent months have ousted the rebels from their strongholds across the north and say they have cornered the Tigers in a sliver of land just 2.4 miles- (four kilometers-) long on the northeast coast.

Human Rights Watch said Saturday it has information "about at least 30 attacks on permanent and makeshift hospitals in the combat area since December 2008" and blamed government forces.

"Hospitals are supposed to be sanctuaries from shelling, not targets," Brad Adams, the group's Asia director, said in a statement.

One of deadliest attacks took place on May 2, when artillery shells struck Mullaivaikal hospital killing 68 people wounding 87, the statement said.

"While doctors and nurses struggle to save lives in overcrowded and underequipped facilities, Sri Lankan army attacks have hit one hospital after another," Adams said.

Military spokesman Brig. Udaya Nanayakkara denied the accusation, saying the forces never targeted hospitals in their military operations.

"We have never attacked hospitals," he said.

The government has also vowed to stop using heavy weapons in the fight out of concern for the civilians, but health officials and rights groups say the war zone is still being shelled.

A government health official in the war zone said the area came under intense shelling Friday. The official declined to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

But Nanayakkara said soldiers were only using small weapons to capture the remaining rebel territory.

The government and rights groups, meanwhile, accuse the rebels of holding civilians as human shields, a charge the rebels deny.

On Saturday, the rebels opened fire at a group of fleeing civilians, killing one and wounding 16, said Nanayakkara. Rebels could not be reached to respond to that allegation.

More than 116,000 civilians have fled the rebel territory since April 20, according to the military.

International pressure has grown for a humanitarian truce to protect the civilians still in the war zone. The government has rejected such calls, saying they are on the verge of ending the island nation's quarter-century of civil war.

The rebels have been fighting since 1983 for a separate state for minority Tamils, who have suffered decades of marginalization at the hands of governments controlled by the Sinhalese majority.

The results of this TN election, I believe therefore, will have some impact on the IC and UN.

As to the war front, I don’t know much. What I know is that the “imminent” defeat of Tigers prophesized by MR and the call to Tigers for surrender by the Co-chairs on the 4th of Feb. have not yet occurred. Three months have passed by, but we have only seen 8000 Vanni Tamils killed and 30 000 injured. Even Yesterday.

Please observe two points in Manmohan Singh's interview:

1) LTTE is 'so far' regarded as terrorist organization by India.

2) We are living in uncertain times. Our soveriegn neighbours have other options than India.

I heard him live on NDTV and reproduced his exact words.

- What that 'so far' means? Is there a possibility to change the status later?

- Doesn't he sound awkward, apolegetic and weak when he says that since Srilanka has other options, India cannot protest strongly over the civilian deaths? Please note that he did not deny the fact that so many civilians were killed.

Thanks Ashok for the information.

Manmohan Singh plays the same music tuned to the some different tone. Elections ?

At least, he openly admits that the Tamils lives are not that important before some national interest.

However, this is some serious insult to the TN Tamils, because 800 TN fishermen, who are also Indians, have been killed by the SLN during the last ten years, but no stern action has ever been taken by the Indian government.

For a democratically elected government, there is no national interest superior to the safeguarding of the lives of its own people. Unless otherwise, those very people are considered as sub-humanes.

I hope that TN Tamils will give a stern message on the election day..

News from home: during the past 48 hours SLA has pursued the offensive with extra vigor. There was another beach landing attempt by the SLN on Saturday morning. Number of shells fired into the area has also rocketed above the 1000s/hour mark.

Their new deadline, it appears, is the May 11th UN meeting, where France and UK might force a Security Council meeting.

Added benefit is that they will not have to deal with any new coalition in India in the post-May 13th scenario.

Indication from Tigers is that they can hold-on for the next five days.

Peter said...

As for the TN elections outcome, I don't think a win for either side would guarantee an end to Sonia-Congress or India's direct assistance to the Sinhalese.

Having said that, I would like to see is a thumping victory for the pro-Eelam coalition.

Most importantly, it will indicate, clearly, to the international players that there is widespread support for Tamils in TN.

Centre, however little it may care about Tamil lives, can not afford to ignore the democratically expressed sentiments of a majority of people across one of India's most advanced states.

While Indian troops may not immediately be pulled out of Eelam, an outcome in favour of Tamils will certainly have some influence over the attitudes of the echelons of power.

khanthas said...

“Doesn't he sound awkward, apolegetic and weak when he says that since Srilanka has other options, India cannot protest strongly over the civilian deaths?”

True, his awkwardness is clear when he says that India cannot do anything. But, I should consider this as an utter lie. It is difficult to believe that India cannot even drop some food parcels to Vanni Tamils. Besides, we hear reports that even the weaker efforts of US, GB even UN to bring about a cease-fire are hindered by India.

No, what I see is that his apparent awkwardness comes out of trying to cover Sonia’s agenda under some national interest (involvement of China, Pakistan in Srilanka ).

Will there be some other point to safeguard sea Tigers and their assets?

We do not expect Prabhakaran and other top leaders to remain there and get caught.

Tigers must have planned for all eventualities.

But what, do you expect, will happen?

DBS Jeyaraj's response to an "angry" diaspora Tamil youth:

I realise how angry you are because I’ve been through that phase. When the SLFP -LSSP - CP govt of Mrs. Bandaranaike brought standardisation (1972) I was a 1st year AL student in Jaffna. We were angry. So we marched in protest. 15,000 students marched. It was the largest student demonstration ever seen in Jaffna.

We burnt effigies but it was non - violent. But nothing happened. So we were angry. We thought the world would have taken note if we had engaged in violence.

We also looked at our history. At that time I like many of my generation ( By the way I am only six months elder to Prabhakaran. He and I were born in 1954) looked at our history.

Sadly the history we learnt of post - independence politics was through the Federal Party and Tamil Congress politicians. The FP paper “Suthanthiran” was our bible. Fiery poets like Kasi Anandan were our heroes.

The history we learnt through Tamil oriented politics was one - sided. But we didn’t realise it then. What we thought then was that the non - violent protests by our moderate leaders had not worked. The Sinhala govts will never recognize our rights. This is what we thought then

So we thought that a separate state - Tamil Eelam - was the solution. We felt that only an armed struggle will achieve it.

We were contemptuous of the older generation. We thought they had failed miserably. We ridiculed them.

I think of the arguments I had with my father, uncles and schoolmasters now and I cry. How harsh I was. How cocksure I was that we the youth had the solution for our troubles. We thought the older generation was a cowardly one. We were the brave ones.

I dont want to go on and on. But the armed struggle developed and took its own course.

And where are we now?

Our homeland is ravaged. You will not know of what Jaffna meant to us and other North - Eastern regions meant to others from those places. But today we are internally displaced in our own land. We cannot go to our own homes. Another component including you and I are now part of the global Tamil diaspora. How I yearn to tread barefoot on that sandy soil. To listen to the koel cooing in the mango tree. To see those red and black “kundumani”. to see the lagoon and those waterbirds. To feel the monsoon breeze. To smell the fragrance of the jasmine. to see the well - sweep go up and down. to eat stringhoppers on a fresh banana or lotus leaf. to cycle and cycle and cycle through those fields and plains. To sit in a sweat - smelling theatre and whistle and clap at a Tamil movie there. To buy6 freshly caught fish at the beach itself and cook and eat it. To see the parrots flocking and chirping. To bathe in Keerimalai tank. To sit on top of the Ther mandapam at the Nunuvil Pillaiyar kovil in my mothers village and gaze serenely on the Thamaraikulam. To buy titbits at the Kovitsanthai one of two evening markets in the Vadamaratchi area. BUT——————

What have we done? we fought for a homeland and lost our home. We wanted a silk verti and lost our loin cloth also.

Our economy is destroyed. Our social fabric is torn apart. our culture is eroded. our values (tamils had great values those days) are distorted. we have become a nation of refugees and displaced. Those days our politicians called us second class citizens but now we are third class .
The armed struggle reached its zenith and we were within reach of a solution. Not separation but a federal or confederal set up provided the LTTE transformed itself and used its military strength as bargaining power at the negotiationg table.

It was missed and in the process we antagonized the international community. The LTTE helped elect this racist Rajapakse regime. Instead of reading the international situation correctly the LTTE mishandled it. Thus the struggle is now confined to a tiny littoral in Mullaitheevu and the world just ignores us except for token gestures and words. That is where we are now. Rockbottom.

But I see you guys the youths and students being emotionally manipulated without even realising what’s happening. You personally may be acting on your own or thinking that you are acting on your own but I know for a fact that there are “people” behind the scenes. May be one of these days I may write more in detail about this if I feel that it will be of any use.

But in your anger and courage and passion to help our beleaguered people and the sacrificial spirit with which you are ready to adopt reckless confrontation to achieve your goal I see the past and recognize the ghost of my generation decades ago.

Sadly I see this diaspora generation also going on the wrong path to achieve the objective and in the process doing irredeemable harm to itself as we did to ourselves.

With the wisdom of hindsight and an awareness gained only through painful, bitter experience I see these diaspora youths who are the future of our people embarking on a suicidal course with what they think is a noble cause and following a path which they are sure will lead them to their destination.

Such is the energy and arrogance of youth and suddenly I feel old.Really old.

I would like to wish you well and stand shoulder to shoulder with you but I cannot do that because I dont want to encourage the youth to follow a wrong course of action. Besides I know these measures will not yield expected results in the west.

So that is why I write and risk being the target of your wrath. But whatever the risk I believe in speaking truth to power even student and youth and diaspora power.

Let me end by recalling a Tamil proverb repeated by my father to me those days.

“Sirupillai Velanmai Vilainthaalum Veedu Vanthu Searathu” (The farming done by little children will not reach home even if the paddy ripens to growth)

The key word here is “Vilainthaalum”.

Wijayapala,

Regardless of the historic origins of the lion standard in the SL flag, it is clear that today it is perceived as representing the Sinhala race, and largely resented by minorities as such.

Even the government acknowledges this, on its own website: "The lion in the flag represents the Sinhala race." (http://www.gov.lk/info/index.asp?mi=19&xp=52&xi=54&xl=3&o=0&t=)

In my opinion, a much better flag would be one without any ethnic undertones at all, though I'm pretty sure I'll not live to see anything of the kind.

wijayapala said...

A Sinhala perspective:

DBS,

I just read your response to Karan Murugavel (#70) and felt that I had to write this. This is not anything about wars, refugees, genocide, humanitarian operations, and separate states but just a young Singhalese boy’s experiences of a first visit to Jaffna many years ago. From what I gathered, you and I (and VP) are of the same age, 54 years. So you and I have lived through the same events in our unfortunate country’s history. I was 10 years old at the time that I am writing about. My father was working in the government in a job that took him to all corners of the country. So this time he had to go to Jaffna on business and he took the whole family with him. We went there on the night mail train from Colombo and stayed at a one of his many friend’s house in Chunnakam. That gentleman, a Tamil school principal in that area took us all over Jaffna. I don’t remember too much about his house, only that there were two boys my age and we played cricket on the road in front of the house. They could not speak a word of Singhala. I could not speak a word of Tamil. No one spoke English. But when we went out to play, absolutely no problem in communicating. I remember that we went to Keerimalai hot springs one night. The place was full of people, all of them having great fun, and talking like express trains in rapid fire Tamil. I remember that I was kind of scared, being surrounded by all these people talking in a strange language. One day we went to Thollakatti farm, where the Christian Brothers who had taken a vow of silence were selling nelli crush. I still remember after all these years the Palmyra trees, Artisan wells, and eating Iddili for the first time in my life. I also remember visiting Nagadeepa Buddhist temple by boat, a very long boat ride that was. It sure was a different world those days.

Then, just as you were, I was in my A-level classes when the University Standardization scheme went into force. Just as you were upset, we were too, because being from a Colombo school we knew that we would be at a disadvantage. We did not hear about the student demonstrations that took place in Jaffna. At the A-levels I managed to enter the university, to Katubedde Campus with and A, 2Bs and a C for the four subjects. A lot of my friends with slightly worse results did not enter. Then when we stated university, there were students from so called disadvantaged areas who had entered Engineering faculty with just 4 simple passes or just slightly better. What is also interesting is that these were not all Singhalese students. There were a few Tamil students from Mannar district and one Tamil student from upcountry who had entered with just the minimum required marks.

The next time I had a chance to go to Jaffna was in 1977, just before the elections. We were in 3rd year university and one of my very good Tamil friends invited me to go with him to Jaffna few weeks before the elections. This is the time that TULF was riding high. They were campaigning on a platform of separation and drawing huge crowds everywhere for election meetings. I was at one meeting with my Tamil friend who was translating for me what the speakers were saying suddenly stopped translating what was being said and looked very upset. He did not tell me what was said at that time, but a few months later, after the 1977 riots, we were discussing all this stuff, he told me what was said. It seems that the speaker was talking about how they were going to chase the Singhalese out of the North after the elections. Apparently there were some statements about “making drums out of Singhala skins”. So I figured then that pandering to the electorate was not an exclusively Singhalese trait.

I could go on and on about the events in the last 30 years. I could tell you that my late Father had tears in his eyes when he heard that Jaffna Library was burnt by then government because he knew that what was lost was not just paper and a building. I could also tell you about stores of unbelievable courage and kindness by some Singhalese during the madness of 1983. In the end I don’t think it matters. As we have demonstrated during the last thirty years we (both Singhalese and Tamil) are all capable of unbelievable brutality to one another. I wonder why that is. We, who have been given the gift of Buddhism and Hinduism, two of the most pacifist religions one could think of, can act this way. My only wish is that we as two communities would learn to respect each other and learn to live with each other. In the end we are not that much different, are we?

I don’t know what made me write all this, but after I read what you wrote, I thought I should put down some of my experiences. After all, a huge part of what we are the result our experiences. May be telling these to one another will help us to understand each other better.

m.g.k,

Hmm. Perhaps the urgency is to finish off before 13th then. Anyhow, tough fighting is said to be ongoing.

ashokkumar2103,

Time bought over recent weeks have been enough to move 'sensitive families' elsewhere. Of course, much of the leadership, along with CASIR, JSIR and most of the other units are out.

Last conventional strike will materialize if there is a change in Indian approach, i.e. Indian troops, or as they prefer to be called 'technicians', are withdrawn. Otherwise, it will be a combination of intense guerrilla-terrorist activities for about six months.

The way SLA killed 1000s of innocent Tamil civilians in NFZ, anyone expects the the reconciliation?

Alcoholic da journey man, DBSJ, should tell us what solutions are on the table for Tamils, lets say, LTTE is out of picture? He should pay his attention to cut down his two dozen beer consumption a day instead of giving us a color commentary, at least, it will help him to have a baby that obviously put him in domestic struggles.

SHIT LANKA GONE MAD!!!!!!!

Sri Lanka arrests 3 UK television journalists
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lanka police say three journalists for London-based Channel-4 television news have been arrested on charges of tarnishing the image of the government security forces.

Police spokesman Ranjith Gunasekera says the trio were arrested in the eastern city of Trincomalee on Saturday and investigations are continuing.

Nick Paton Walsh, the channel's Asian correspondent told the Associated Press that he had been arrested along with producer Bessie Du and cameraman Matt Jasper.

Speaking by telephone, Walsh said they were being driven to capital Colombo with police escort.

He said their arrest was connected to a report filed by them on the condition of camps for war refugees and some alleged sexual abuse in those camps earlier this week.

Bhairav,

Yes, out of the coastal area. Extra time, earned largely by heavy fighting at the borders, has proved useful for evacuation of sensitive families from the region.

But, the final conventional assault depends largely on what India decides to do.

On the topic of David 'BS' Jeyraj, I thought, being a JHC old-boy, you would know of his history vis-a-vis LTTE and RAW. His latest frustration at the Diaspora is most heartening; shows that we have manged to prick RAW in some nasty places.

There were plenty of rumours about Marshall a few month ago when he went to Batticaloa. Obviously, because we couldn't get photos or interviews out, the stories persisted.

Good to see him back in the zone, because it shows that there is relatively easy access between Mulai and Batti. He may have done the interview during final trip back.

Note what he says at 8min: still retain ability for conventional offensive, but timing will be decided by leadership and is dictated by world events out of our control. Although he doesn't say it explicitly, it depends on if and when Indian troops pull out.

Latest update on TN elections:
Hope you would have read the latest Nakkheeeran and also the half-baked Indian.
Nakkheeeran is very sympathetic towards Ealam issue but at the same time Gopal is a staunch supporter of DMK. So, half of the articles can be discarded.
But DMK is pumping money like anything.
The latest tally would be like this:

ADMK and alliances - 30 -32
DMK & congress - 7 -8
Others - 0 -2

Indian, Please wait upto 16th and we can debate about the past. How DMK came to power in 1967? Why MGR won 1977 and 1980 elections. How ADMK and congress used the wave of Indiara's killing in 1984 etc.
I am not a MGR's fan and you would have realised from my last post. But this time my vote is for ADMK.

Dear Roy,

"Gandhi was dealing with civilised British whereas Tamils had to deal with tribal sinhaloids. LTTE was the right outfit for these tribal Sinhaloids."

The problem though is that the LTTE has been smashed to pieces and now you're crying about genocide. I am worried that you might start another war only to end with more weepings and self-immolations regarding genocide. That is why I advocate political approach for Eelamoids.

"they (excluding Veeramani) have been imprisoned umpteen times."

That was long ago- I'm talking about NOW. If Kalaignar had JJ arrested she will win even more votes and both of them know that. So why doesn't JJ take that extra step and identify with the LTTE???

guys, news on the street says KK is putting plan B in case Cong decided to pull their support in TN after the election. He is planning to revive TMC and break the TN congress party if they decided to break the alliance. Vasan is said to be not happy with the seats his team got from the center and he is close to KK. KK is expert in trying to break the parties. So, chances are high that TN Cong might break after the election and put the death nail to the TN congress coffin (Ironic, same thing happened when Cong decided to ally with JJ in 96.)

With the current standing, ADMK + cong + PMK + commies = 128. You need 117 to get majority and if KK can break 20 MLAs from the party, game over. So, if you look from any direction, congress is screwed. BJP said to be emerging as a single largest party with 165+ seats and NDA said to be getting about 210+. TRS is the recent entrant to NDA now. To form the government in the center, NDA need another 60 and that is where TDP and ADMK come into picture.

More than 2,000 civilians slaughtered in a single night in 'safety zone'

[TamilNet, Sunday, 10 May 2009, 02:55 GMT]
Indiscriminate barrage of shelling by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) on the 'safety zone' starting from Saturday night to Sunday morning slaughtered between 2,000 to 3,000 civilians including large number of women and children, medical sources in Vanni said quoting the injured who managed to reach the makeshift hospital. Dead bodies are scattered everywhere and around 400 wounded managed to reach the makeshift hospital, the sources said. Every kind of lethal weapon such as the internationally banned cluster shells and shells fired from Multi Barrel Rocket Launchers and Cannons were used turning the so-called safety zone into a killing field. The SLA usually chooses weekends for its massacres to minimise international attention.

VHP attacks Rahul on Lankan issue

Singhal told media on Saturday that: “What has he done so far for Lankan Tamils? Why was he sitting idle for so long? Now suddenly he is expressing concern for Lankan Tamils.”
“The Tamils who are being killed there are Hindus. Nearly 1500 Hindu temples have been destroyed there. As such, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi have no heart for Hindus,” he added.

He stated that the Sri Lankan issue was not a Tamil problem alone but a Hindu problem, “It is a Hindu problem not a Tamil problem alone. The entire country should have been behind Lankan Tamils.”
On the question of a separate Eelam though he said, “We are not for a separate Eelam but believe that the Tamil refugees in Sri Lanka and abroad should be resettled in Sri Lanka and be given equal rights with the Sinhalese.”

He also negated the need for military action by India in Sri Lanka saying, “Diplomatic action alone will be enough. I don’t think military action is needed.”

The Dalai Lama, he said, could be used for a peaceful settlement as Sri Lanka is a Buddhist nation, “We can use the Dalai Lama for this purpose”, he said.

Stressing the need for a strong leadership to achieve these ends he said, “The BJP is the only party that can provide a strong leadership and protect Hindus so Hindus must vote for the BJP.”

Manjula was among the 546 injured people on the shore of the NFZ waiting for the ICRC ship to rescue them. Many were starved and dehydrated — the government had stopped food supplies from the World Food Programme entering the zone for a month. That day, Manjula saw the ICRC ship

arrive at 7 am, but that wasn’t the end of the agony. “The ship was surrounded by 40 navy boats — they were trying to come along with the ship and attack the coast. The ICRC refused to move until they abandoned the attempt. This went on till 2.30 pm when the ship was finally allowed passage by the navy. “Two people died while waiting. One died as soon as we got on board,” she recalls.

Media Bytes – LTTE Activity in Tamil Nadu
by Col R. Hariharan

The STRATFOR, the US strategic security organisation, has assessed that the support in Tamil Nadu for the LTTE means they can exploit the international border to their advantage. Logistic-wise and infrastructure-wise India is best place for them. It said, I quote “The Tigers use India in much the same way that the Taliban and al Qaeda use Pakistan. The Tigers' logistical and training infrastructure in India is especially important during times (like the present) when the Sri Lankan government is hammering them.” It says the LTTE is more dangerous than al Qaeda. What are your comments?

For a long time India knows that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is a very dangerous terrorist group. It is for this reason that it has been repeatedly banned for over a decade and a half whenever the issue came up for review. So it is nothing new. However, there are some disturbing indications; three things have taken place all over the world that indicates possible LTTE moves.

The Tamil Diaspora was originally agitating for ceasefire to save the civilians trapped in the no war zone. However, lately this agitation has been taken over by the LTTE. Now these protests are sporting LTTE flags [suitably modified to avoid confronting local laws], displaying Prabhakaran’s pictures and shouting slogans like ‘Prabhakaran is our leader’.This is an important indication. After their take over, the agitations have turned violent directed particularly against the embassies and high commission offices of Sri Lanka, India and China in UK and France. These are not stray incidents; LTTE organises these protests.

Secondly, there had been agitation against army [building up] in India. [On May 5, 2009, a large group of pro-LTTE Tamil political activists blocked a convoy of Indian army trucks near Coimbatore because they believed the trucks were carrying supplies destined for the Sri Lankan military]. A lot of disinformation is being spread about Indian army’s involvement in Sri Lanka. Fake CDs [to support such allegations] are being circulated. For some mysterious reason Government of India has not refuted these allegations. Nobody knows why it is so.

Thirdly, all political parties in India, including the ruling coalition, are soft pedalling the LTTE related issues [apparently not wanting to take on the issue during the election time]. So a lot of things are required to be done in India because the LTTE has large reserve overseas assets in many countries. All these assets will be activated now. Such assets exist in India also. So the danger is very much there. Government of India is well aware of this. Our intelligence agencies are perhaps the best equipped in the world to know what is happening in the LTTE. But the question is what action the Government of India has taken on such information? It remains a mystery because the government is very reluctant to share such information with the public

yes Ashok, that point you mention is what most LTTE people are saying, they are saying the teams from the major leage are palying in the minor leage games. If we try to play with them in convetinal way, we will have havey losses.
So thats is the true situation.

We are all counting on our tamil brothers to show their will in the comming ellection. This will not only help eelam tamils but also the establishment of tamil state accrost the sea will give lot of bargaining power to Tamil Nadue.

After Karunanihi's hospitalization drama over Rahul's remarks, 6th meeting of Sonia was cancelled.

But the platform for the meeting erected at Theevu thidal grounds was kept without dismantling. Thangabalu did not know what to do next. (Rental for the ground per day is Rs. 8 lakhs.)

Manmohan Singh's meeting was also cancelled as both DMK and Congress could not patch up.

Manmohan Singh then decided to meet Karunanidhi personally as a damage control measure.

Then it was decided to have the meeting on 10th, to avoid further controversy.

As protest demonstrations are being organized against Sonia's visit, she has been advised to use a helicopter from the airport directly to the meeting grounds and avoid travelling by road.

Now their plan is to show unity till the elections are over, so that they do not loose whatever chances exist of winning a few seats.
